Excerpt from All Things Returned

“Jacob Lowell has taken from me what is mine. I shall have it back.”

“You stubborn, stubborn man. Jacob Lowell is not worth your spit. He is a drunkard and a gambler. Did I tell you how he came to be indebted? He spent part of his family’s considerable fortune on

whores and the rest he gambled at cards.”

Rupert turned to me, looking shocked at my words. Anton knew me well enough not to be so affected.

I stepped close enough that I could touch him. “I am sorry for what I have done. More because you are right, I should have waited until you came home and I should have trusted you. If you see it as betrayal that cannot be redeemed, then I’ll away from you. I’ll be grieved for all of my days, but I will trouble you no more. But if you throw away your life for someone so unworthy, I shall die with you.”

Fresh tears punctured my eyes. We stood for an eternity in silence, his back to me and nary a sound but the chirp of birds and the snort of the horses. My tears, too, were silent as they rolled down my face.

Anton turned and I saw my pained reflection in his eyes. He put his hand to my arm then swept me to his breast. “I will never let you go, though you tear my soul in two.”
