EXCERPT:

The sound of a snapping twig turned her attention, and the object of her thoughts stood a few feet from her, leaning against a huge tree with gnarled roots as if he had all the time in the world.

“I thought I managed to escape without anyone seeing me,” she said in lieu of formal greeting.

“I saw you leave just as my carriage was pulling into your driveway,” he explained. “Why are you here alone?”

“Mr. Fletcher is giving a grand tour of our home to strangers, in hopes that they buy it.” Her tone was acerbic.

His gaze softened, but she thrust out her chin, daring him to offer her sympathy. She changed the subject, unable to dwell on the idea that her childhood home, one that had been in the family for generations, would be sold. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?”

“So proper?” Gray asked, moving away from the tree and coming toward her.

“I feel out of sorts today.”

Gray reached out to touch her cheek. “I came to hand deliver an invitation to the masquerade.”

“Oh.” Her brown eyes dropped to his lips. Moving closer, he wrapped his arms around her. “Is this your way of trying to distract me from my woes?” she asked with a smile.

“Is it working?”

“Too soon to tell,” she replied wickedly.

GUEST Post:

As an author, I’m terrified of never being discovered. I’m terrified that my work won’t make it through the noise while I compete with other more marketable authors. I look at some of the authors that became a viral sensation and I wonder, “How do I do that?!” Was it a fluke? How did they get people to talk about their book? How did they get so many Facebook likes and does that translate into sales and people talking about their books?  My mind is an endless loop. I’m terrified that at one point I’ll compromise my “artistic integrity” (I hate that phrase, yet it applies here) and I’ll want to become a sell out because ultimately, my dream, is to write from home full time. I worry that I’ll have to write what appeals to the masses when I don’t want to. I worry that I’ll have to make concessions and compromises, but then what will success mean? Can’t I have both? Can I still be true to myself and write what I want? I never did well in school when I was told what I had to write about. I balked and moaned, lamenting the fact that I never wanted to be penned in (by my pen?) by someone else’s idea of what to write. We are bombarded all the time with a lot of stuff. On Facebook alone, I follow blog pages and get constant updates about books. After a while, I stop seeing the recommendations because there are so many of them. If I glaze out, I know others glaze out too. I guess all I can do is keep going and hope that everything falls into place.
