EXCERPT:

Sophie was the last one awake. She lay tensely in the queen-size bed next to her mother’s until she heard Marie’s soft, even breathing. Certain that her mother was deeply asleep, she slipped out of bed, tiptoed to her suitcase, and took out the little pink and red bag. Inside nestled a print scarf and a multi-colored beaded bracelet. Both items still bore their price tags. She’d snipped the tag off only the tortoiseshell hair comb so she could wear it today. She took it from the nightstand, looked at all three items, shook out and stroked the glossy material of the scarf, then quietly tucked all of them back in the bag, which she pushed deep into her suitcase. She wouldn’t take them out again until she left Dallas. She’d never wear that stupid hair comb again. She told herself it wasn’t as pretty as she’d thought when she first saw it in the store. The stern little voice inside her head told her that wasn’t the reason.

Sophie refused to allow herself to know what the real reason was.

She hadn’t left Colorado with those items in her suitcase. Her mother didn’t know she had them. She couldn’t explain where she’d gotten them.

But taking them had made her feel better. Everybody did it, at least once or twice. No big deal. She took a deep relaxing breath, thinking about how the act of lifting them from the counter made her feel, and realized she was finally getting drowsy. She crawled into bed, turned over, and was deeply asleep in three minutes.

New DitzelIt is my pleasure to interview Ron Doades, author of Realizing You. Welcome to Room With Books, Mr Doades!

1. If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?

Fish and lots of veggies, if you didn’t tell me otherwise. With some many people having special eating habits these days, I find it’s always best to ask—than guess—what they like and dislike, and try my best to accommodate them. If you don’t express any preferences, you will get some delicious fish—maybe lemon sole—and a variety of vegetables—spinach, carrots, beans, brussel sprouts. I try to eat healthily, and would like my quests to do the same. It’s up to you.

2. Are you a romantic?

Yes, at least by some standards. I like a lot of candlelight, soft and sensuous music, and inviting fragrances. I’m really a soft touch at weddings, birthday parties, ballets, and, most of all, movies. My eyes are continually cleansed from the teardrops. I take a few tissues with me to every movie. I even shed tears at various points of The Little Mermaid. But, I perceive myself as not a “hopeless” romantic, but a “hopeful” romantic. Gotta get a little bit of reality in there somewhere.

3. Do you listen to music when you’re writing?

No. I’m not very good at multi-tasking. I have to work hard to focus on the task at hand, free of distractions that may cause my mind to wonder. Writing is very serious business for me, and music would be a needless distraction. Both my business office and my home office have very little outside noise; so, I don’t need music to blot out distractions.

4. Do you ever read your stories out loud?

No, hearing my voice is another needless distraction from really engaging in what I am writing. I need to inhale my writing, allowing it to penetrate the depths of my psychic. I hang a mental “do not disturb” sign when I’m writing, which means, in this context, do not disturb yourself.

5. What are your future ambitions?

As a senior citizen, my future ambitions need to be clearly defined and achievable in just a few years. This comes from a person activity involved in his business and avocations. Under these circumstances, my ambitions are: continue my consulting practices into the foreseeable future, create new self-improvement fiction books, travel to a lot to new places, contribute time to a non-profit organization, and, lastly, to spend a preponderance of time with my family and dear friends. My greatest ambition is to leave this world knowing that I helped to make it a better place.
