Kyle Pierce used to know what she wanted. At the top of her list was the perfect boyfriend. She found him in Lance Makin her senior year in high school. She was the head cheerleader and he was the new star quarterback. Even going to separate colleges was no problem for them.
It was perfect until the weekend it all changed for Kyle. She has new priorities that include her own education, making new friends and most importantly NO DATING!
That is until Nicholas Richards moves into her world. He’s not taking no for an answer. He’s her friend and he wants her to date him.
Kyle isn’t going to date Nick. She doesn’t mind hanging out or running errands. She tells him and everyone else they are friends.
Can they really be just friends?
I’m typing a response when my phone signals I have a new message. I stop what I’m doing and open the message.
It’s another picture. This time it’s a selfie of Nick. He is holding the camera above his head and he’s leaning back against my door.
The irony is not lost on me that we are sitting with our backs almost against one another. He’s sitting in the hallway and I’m in my bedroom, behind a closed door. A fresh wave of tears drops along my face.
Nick: I can hear you
I pull my knees closer to my chest and just rest my cheek there. I’m still crying but his words give me something.
Me: I’m not talking
Nick: you don’t have to speak for me to hear you
I don’t think I expected to read those words. I might be stunned but I just don’t have a response for him.
My phone signals again and I look to see a small picture of piano keys.
Nick: If I would have listened to my mother I could play you a song on the piano but I never took piano lessons. L I wish I had just for you.
