The battered bodies of two young girls are discovered in North London, one shortly after the other. Desperate to avoid hysteria in the community, the police struggle to make a quick arrest before the deranged killer can strike again. Not having any luck, Detective Geraldine Steel, recently transferred to London, is called in to make sense of the grisly murders and the killer’s unusual signature: he extracts two teeth from each of his victims. With the death toll mounting, Geraldine is running out of time as she hunts for the elusive killer the papers have dubbed “The Dentist.”
Inspiration behind the Book
After the success of my debut, Cut Short, I wanted to write a murder story that did not revolve around a serial killer. In Road Closed I explore the idea of a person who might have lived a normal life, under normal circumstances, but who is driven to kill. Of course that isn’t a sane reaction to life events. Many of us sadly experience terrible trauma and loss without reacting in such an extreme way, so this character in Road Closed is clearly not completely sane from the start. I can’t say any more without giving away too much. This story becomes intertwined with the actions of a psychopath. So the book features two killers whose methods and motives form a stark contrast.
And through it all my detectives, Geraldine Steel and Ian Peterson, are trying to discover the killer’s identity before another victim dies.
