EXCERPT:

Chance’s eyes opened, full of the sleepy wonder and then he smiled at her and held out his arms. A smile tugged at her heart as she picked him up and hugged him. The feeling was so right and so intense, she would be more than happy to stay like that for the rest of her life.

Right now though, it was time to get moving.

“Okay bud. We’ve got a big, fun day ahead of us. I need you to help me get you dressed and then we’re going on an adventure.”

As only children can, he went from barely being awake to being fired up and ready to play. She swung him up in the air. He giggled. The sound was so refreshing and filled her with so much joy. It reminded her of what was really important. His coming into this world might not have been under the best circumstances but she wouldn’t give him up for anything. She would protect him with her life, which ironically, was what it felt like. She didn’t know if keeping Stephen out of his life was going to be an issue or not. She couldn’t see why it would be, he’d never shown an ounce of love or compassion for Chance. In fact he’d barely even acknowledged him. There was no way she was going to let him have any kind of influence on her son. The thought of him turning out like Stephen made her shudder.

What she was doing wouldn’t go over well but she hoped he’d just be a little pissed off and move on, quickly. He never seemed to be bothered with anything that didn’t bring him money or power. It made her wonder again, why had he married her? Something told her that although he had claimed not to want to know about her or her background or meet her family that somehow he knew. Had he known she was the daughter of a hotel magnate? If he had why hadn’t he used it? Or had he? She’d have guessed love but he dispelled that idea not too long after they were married and let her know she was to be at his beck and call. She just couldn’t seem to get rid of the thought that he was using her. She just couldn’t figure out for what.

Chance wiggled, bringing her back to what she was supposed to be doing. She got him cleaned up and was walking to the kitchen with him when her cell phone chimed. She stopped so suddenly she actually jolted her whole body. Fear crawled up her spine and wrapped around her neck, making swallowing almost impossible.

INTERVIEW:

It is my pleasure to feature Maggie Thom, author of Deceitful Truths, on Room With Books. Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions, Maggie. I know how crazy life can get for you during a tour!

Please tell me about Deceitful Truths, and what inspired you to write it?

Deceitful Truths is about a woman, Tarin, who has lost a week of her life. She doesn’t know who kept her drugged for that long or why but she does know the consequences of it. After trying to come to terms with it, she realizes she has to find answers because at some point she is sure someone is going to want to find her again… if they don’t already know where she is.

After I had finished writing Captured Lies, Book one in the Caspian Wine Series, I knew I had to write a sequel. Well actually the idea or push really came from one of my beta readers. I had been thinking about changing up the story and when she made a suggestion for a change, my mind immediately leapt to how I could make a sequel, if I made a few small changes. So that’s what I did. The actual idea for Deceitful Truths came from a combination of things. Geoff in Caspian Wine is a really evil man and so I started to think about what someone like him, very rich, very controlling, living a dual life, could do to another person to screw with their life but that would benefit him. I happened at the time to be watching a program on date-rape and how prevalent it really is. So an idea started forming that if someone used Rohypnol on someone else, why would they and what would be the result? This story explores what happens when someone has lost a week of their life and there are some consequences how would they go about finding answers. And I can’t tell you anymore or it would ruin the plot for you. J

When you start writing a new novel, do you outline the story or do your characters dictate what will happen?
Each book I write is a little bit different but to be honest the characters ultimately do dictate a good part of where the story goes. I do write an outline and information on each character, so I know who they are but once I get writing the story often the character will direct the story based on who they are.

With Deceitful Truths I have to say at one point too many were deciding that they were going to decide where the story was going. I had to rein in several of the characters as they wanted to take over the story and make it theirs. J When things like this happen I back up and look at whose story this is and what needs to happen to make it that character’s story.

Do you ever have arguments with your characters and who usually wins?

Interesting question. Do I ever argue with my characters? Hmmm. I don’t know that we argue but I guess as I mentioned in the above question I did have to take control of several of them as they were walking away with the story and I didn’t want that. J So in that case I guess I won or really my main heroine and hero won.

What is something about you your readers would be surprised to know?
I really don’t know. I really try to be an open book J about who I am and the things I do right and the mistakes I make. I guess if I were to offer something, it would be that I am a very different person than I was about five + years ago. I love where my life is at and where I’m at as a person. It took me a very long time to figure out who I was and to believe that I was good enough to be an author, it really wasn’t just for other people.

If you could write with any other author who would it be any why?

Oh my god there are so many. I guess my first choice would be Sandra Brown. I love all of her books and we tend to write similar types of stories – suspense, strong women heroines, a bit of a romance but it doesn’t drive the story. Hers are more based around murders and solving them where mine are more about family secrets, lies and deceit and some of the tougher situations that happen to people. I think it would be very cool to write with her and blend our styles to see what would be the result. If you can make this happen, I’d be thrilled. J

When you were little what did you dream of becoming when you grew up and why?

You know, I really didn’t know. When I was really young, 6ish, I wanted to be a nurse (there really weren’t a lot of women role models out there, choices were few, at least to me). Later I wanted to run a zoo. I loved animals and having grown up on a farm, I figured how different could it be to work with wild animals? Yeah right. J I didn’t go that route either. I have loved to write since I was little but honestly never saw it as a career.

When did you decide to write and what prompted you to start?
I’ve been writing since I was young, I have no idea how old. I do know that my first attempt at a book was when I was nine. I was always fascinated by words and I think on some long, winter days, where I couldn’t be outside and I’d have enough of playing games with my siblings, it was a way to fill in the time and pretend that I was out exploring the world.

What music inspires your writing?

I love soft rock, pop, the old time rock and roll, some country. I really listen to almost all music, if it has a good beat or a good message. I love to listen to music when I write but honestly it fades into the background when I write so most of the time I’m not even aware of what I’m listening too. When I don’t have the music playing though, I notice that right away.

FUN FACTS:

What is your favorite color? Jade – I love that it is such a vibrant green with a touch of blue to it.
What is your favorite movie? Notebook is definitely one of them. It is such a beautiful story that really encompasses all the good and bad in life. It’s a tear jerker for sure.
What is your dream car? There are so many ‘wow’ cars out there right now. Hmmmm, the Pontiac Solstice looks like a fun, two-seater car. I’d love a burnt orange, convertible. It’s small, compact and would be great fun to do some touring and traveling in on sunny days.
