Why I love a cowboy hero by Molly Ann Wishlade

I think that a childhood spent with my amazing little Granny and her own fascination with the Wild West probably started it all. We’d sit and eat hot strawberry jam toasties on a Saturday afternoon, whilst watching the likes of John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Clint Eastwood swagger across the screen of a tiny portable television. Their arrogance and pride, their chaps and Stetsons and their love of the land all hooked me right there and then. They were respectful towards women (usually and if they weren’t, it was part of the exciting romantic conflict to be resolved) and they would bare knuckle fight anyone who insulted their own woman or family.

Even as a child, I knew that these men were acting but it opened a whole new world to me, one where men were chivalrous and masculine with integrity and a thirst for justice. Growing up in the Welsh valleys, the Wild West was a complete contrast and I became fascinated by the wild and rugged landscape and the men who sought to tame it.

My western novels are set in the 1800s. I’m addicted to historical romances and historical novels and I love reading about different times. I’m always thinking ‘what if…’ when I read and write and I like to consider how my characters would have coped with the challenges of day to day life back then, as well as how they’d behave when faced with love and loss. Romance novels require a strong, honourable and sexy hero and cowboys epitomise this. These heroes are brave, deep and honest. They don’t want any trouble but if it finds them, they face it with courage and they stick to their principles – and their guns! They also have deep dark eyes, broad toned shoulders, thick muscular thighs and abs to die for… but I have to give the heroine (and my lovely reader) a bit of what she fancies!

Add to these qualities an air of mystery and independence, and what more could you wish for? The cowboy often has a past that would make many lesser men break down but he bears it admirably and he doesn’t harp on about how hard he’s had it. It might mean that he has a secret vulnerability that only the heroine can soothe and when he does ‘open up’, it’s a beautiful and sensitive moment. His desire for independence means that he works his land and he cares for his animals, he has the means to support himself and his family and he doesn’t need anyone or anything else. Except for the one he loves, of course. In fact, he doesn’t give a damn what others think. In modern society, where we deal constantly with job insecurities, rising living costs and are relentlessly bombarded by the message that we need to be better in all areas of our lives, it’s no wonder that the cowboy hero is so appealing.

He IS raw masculinity in its purest form. *swoon*

And just in case that’s not enough…

He’ll gallop in on his horse, scoop you up in his arms and seat you on the saddle in front of him, then carry you back to his homestead where he’ll make love to you in his rough and ready, yet extremely sensual way, and offer you your Happy Ever After (in more ways than one) as only a cowboy can.

That is why I love a cowboy hero.

My cowboy series The Duggans of Montana with Totally Bound features a family of cowboys. The first novel Harlot at the Homestead is the story of Kenan and Catherine. The second to be released in June 2015 is A Rancher for Rosie, the story of Kenan’s twin sister Rosie and her rancher Joshua. I’m currently writing the third in the series about Matthew Duggan and his Sioux lover. (The title of this one is TBC.) So there are plenty of cowboys coming your way soon!

Blurb for Harlot at the Homestead:

This is book one in the The Duggans of Montana series, see the full series listing here

Sometimes retribution finds its own way but sometimes it needs a helping hand.

When Catherine Montgomery shows up at Kenan Duggan’s homestead, she expects him to be surprised. She’s been gone two years and she’s devastated to hear that her former fiancé was forced to give her up for dead.

Catherine never stopped thinking about Kenan and hoped that they’d be reunited one day. She has suffered at the hands of another but nothing tortured her as much as being apart from the man she loves. She doubts, however, that Kenan will be able to forgive her when she reveals her secrets.

As Kenan battles his desire for revenge, their mutual desire reawakens like a creek bed in the rain, and soon they are swept up in rediscovering their all-consuming passion.

Retribution often finds its own way in the Wild West and the men to blame for Catherine’s disappearance may well find themselves paying for their crimes in unexpected ways.

That’s if Kenan doesn’t get to them first!

About Molly Ann Wishlade:

Molly Ann Wishlade has always been an avid reader and writer of stories. Her lifetime of reading has taken her from the magical worlds of The Faraway Tree and The Borrowers, to the Greek myths and legends, to Sweet Valley High and Judy Blume’s Forever, to Asimov’s science fiction, Jane Eyre’s torment and Stephen King’s masterpieces. More recently she has wandered through the vivid historicals of Philippa Gregory; the bubbly, gritty delights of Adele Parks and the fast paced thrillers of James Patterson. She loves getting lost in a novel and often regrets finishing one as the characters are usually missed like old friends. She regularly indulges her insatiable hunger for romance and passion in the delicious worlds created by romantic novelists and is working on several of her own!

Excerpt from Harlot at the Homestead:

His experience led him straight to the apex of her thighs where he rubbed and teased the soft rounded flesh of her legs. He brushed the back of his hands softly against the red curls at her groin and the gentle pressure made her bud swell in anticipation. She shivered as a knuckle grazed her clitoris making it tingle.

“Do you like that, sweetheart?” He leant forward and kissed her navel, poking his tongue into the shallow hole. His hot breath fired her lust and she grabbed him by the hair then pushed her hips towards him to urge him to caress her fully. When his fingers parted the damp curls and met her silken folds, the sensation made her gasp. It had been so long since she had felt such tender cherishing. The summit of pleasure rose before her and she flung her head back and rode the waves that his delicate circling and massaging encouraged. Stars appeared then burst before her eyes and she was catapulted through darkness then flung gasping into the light.

As her shuddering slowed, she loosened her grip on his hair. She had come so quickly under his knowing caress. It seemed that her longing for him had heightened her arousal, quickened her climax.

“You ready to ride a cowboy?” he asked. He slid a finger inside her, causing her to tremble with an aftershock of her climax then he added another, stretching her slightly and she opened her legs to encourage him.

“Oh yes, Kenan…Yes!” She gasped. The image of his thick hard cock filling her almost pushed her over the edge again.

When he withdrew his fingers she groaned with disappointment.

“Don’t fret, Catherine.” He chuckled. “I’ll fill you up in due time.”

He stripped off his clothing and she eyed his lean, male body. His torso was golden from his time outdoors and his arms and shoulders rippled with his movements, displaying the well-honed muscles beneath the skin. His chest was broad, his stomach flat and his thighs large and muscular. And attracting her attention more than any other part of him, teasing her in the lamp light, was his thick, hard cock.

What a great article. This looks like a must-read for any lover of erotic romance. Cowboys are always swoon-worthy, but Molly Ann makes them sound irresistible.
