Hello! I am Rinku Bhattacharya the blogger at Spice Chronicles,on my quest to make Indian cooking manageable. It all about Spices and Season, Simple, Sustainable, Indian flavors today. One of the key things I try to do with my cooking is to keep the essence of authenticity, without losing my mind. I have been teaching Indian cooking for over 10 years to all kinds of audiences and Spices and Seasons, was developed to be a cookbook that offered a combination of classic and creative recipes giving readers a selection of their favorites along with ideas for something new.  So, right along with your Chicken Tikka Masala, Pork Vindaloo, Saag Paneer (Creamed Spinach with Indian white cheese), you have recipes for spice and herb roasted Chicken and a spiced golden cornbread, that I have fancifully labelled Masala Sunshine Cornbread.

I have also tackled a lot of the pet peeves in this book – I have simplified the basics to a group of 7 spices, that I am calling the essential spice pantry. This is a great start and works for several of the recipes in this book. People also like to see what a finished dish looks like, so there is a photograph for every recipe in the book. Other common points that I have encountered and addressed demystifying the myth of curry powder (yes, it is indeed a myth), addressing the flexibility of using spices and detailed sections on how to build and enhance your spice arsenal.

The seasons part of the book comes from the fact that at heart like most ancient cuisines, Indian cuisine is very eco-friendly and espouses eating and living with the seasons. There is an excitement about welcoming the seasons and the signature produce that is associated with each of the seasons. Now, here I have taken this excitement and translated it into the local offerings. Indians love their vegetables and we take a very Spartan approach to using the vegetables. To that end, you will find recipes for turnips, radishes and broccoli just to name a few overlooked vegetables and lots of ideas on how to use the greens that come with these vegetables. Speaking of vegetables – the book has several vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free recipes. To make it easier for everyone, I have made sure that the recipes are all carefully tagged with the dietary restrictions and are perfectly indexed with separate vegan and vegetarian indexes. What can I say, I really want everyone to feel comfortable working with this book.

Overall, this is a fun time of the year to reach out for a copy of Spices and Seasons, it is May just when the markets are beginning to start full swing. It is that time of the year, you want to try new grilling ideas, such as my Pineapple Chicken Wings. A colorful and sturdy hard cover, the book certainly makes a great gift as well.

From “Money Eyes” a story in the “Obedience Training” collection:

Bad boys never change… Do they?

Cassandra Levant:
He was the best man at my best friend’s wedding and he had a hell of a reputation. Tall, handsome, full-of-himself, how could I resist? The cocky bad boy drew me in, and no amount of logic could convince me to let him go.

The first time we met, I didn’t exactly make a good first impression. Mistaking someone for a stripper doesn’t really land you in their good books, does it?

I mean, what are the chances that he arrives at the exact time the stripper is supposed to turn up? Give a girl a break!

Then again, what are the chances that three weeks later he’d end up being my hot new boss?

He thinks he has the edge over me. It’s about time this play boy was brought back down to Earth.

Aaron Maxfield:
After an embarrassing first meeting with Cassandra, payback was the only thing on my mind. I wanted her, and I knew she wouldn’t dare resist me, but first, I was going to thoroughly enjoy pushing all her buttons.

Funnily enough, it turns out that this stunning blonde is in need of a new job, and I happen to be hiring. Am I the luckiest guy alive or what?

I think I’ll make her my very own personal assistant. Let’s have some fun, shall we?

Read an excerpt from Rosalie’s story

“Oh!  I’m so sorry!  I wasn’t looking!”  She immediately apologized before she even got a chance to see who it was that she’d jolted.  It was the boy with the blue eyes!  At first, she didn’t recognize him because he had on jeans without rips, and a plain t-shirt instead of a leather jacket.  His face was freshly shaven, and she could still smell the sweet shaving gel he’d used.
“It’s fine.”  He kept staring at her, and she blushed.  Turning back towards the front of the aisle that she’d come from, she decided that she was just going to grab a random box and get the hell out of there.  “I think you might find this one to your liking.”  He reached up and grabbed a box from the top shelf that she hadn’t even looked at yet, and held it out to her.  Rosalie’s hand shot out of its own accord to take the box and put it in her little shopping basket.

“Thank you.  And thank you for bringing back my book.  I hadn’t even realized that I’d forgotten it.”  Oh no!  The word vomit had come out.  She’d meant to say two words to him, then beat a hasty retreat, but her mouth had a mind of his own.  He smiled at her, and she froze.  His smile was utterly dazzling.  It was like a moth being reeled in to the flame.  She had to tell herself not to move any closer to him.

“It’s no problem.  Enjoy your coffee.”  He turned away from her, and it took her a second to realize that he was stocking the shelves.  Did he work there?  Something told her to just turn around and leave, but there went her mouth again.

“I’m Rosalie, by the way.”  She blushed furiously.”

Do first impressions always last?

When veterinarian Brett Coulson and stable owner Samantha Hanson-Bishop meet, it’s hate at first sight. He thinks she’s a snobby, stuck-up bitch who wouldn’t know nice if it bit her on the arse. She thinks he’s a blundering, inexperienced little boy who shouldn’t be within fifty miles of her prized horses. But it doesn’t matter much—they’ll never have to see each other again. Or will they?

When fate throws them into the same room together at a charity fundraiser, the resentment between them quickly resurfaces. But mixed in with that resentment is something they both tried to deny… attraction. Will the chemistry between them cancel out the animosity, or were their first impressions just too powerful to change?

Hello—thank you so much for stopping by!

I’m so excited to share a little bit about myself and my story in the Coming In Hot boxed set!

Tell us about your title featured in this set.

My story is called On Her High Horse, and is set in the Yorkshire Dales, in England. It’s an enemies-to-lovers story about a young vet and one of his clients.

Once I got going, it probably only took me a couple of weeks to write (I don’t write full time, so I have to squeeze my writing in around everything else I do to earn a living!).

The title was actually a complete nightmare to come up with! Sometimes titles come to me before I even write a story, and other times they pop up while I’m writing. This one eluded me for a long time. I was Googling horsey phrases and veterinary phrases for ages, until I finally came up with this—and it fits the story really well, I think. So it was worth waiting for!

Tell us something about yourself.

I’m from Derbyshire, in England, where I still live with my dog, Scamp. As I mentioned before, I don’t write full time—I actually do lots of little jobs which make up a full time job; writing, marketing, editing, PR, web design, formatting, etc… basically, I eat, sleep and breathe books in one way or another, so it’s pretty awesome. I love being my own boss. I love spending time out in the countryside with my other half and my dog, reading (of course), films, and travelling.

Tell us about your writing process.

It varies massively depending on what I’m writing. For novel length work, I do tend to have some kind of plan, or at the very least an outline, in place. But for short stories and novellas, I tend to just write and see where the characters take me. I write as and when I can, juggling it around everything else I do. The benefit of being my own boss is I can move projects around if I need to—as long as I meet all the deadlines, it’s all good! 😉

What is your favourite genre to read?

I don’t have one, really. I like reading different kinds of books—as long as there’s a gripping story, I’m happy.
What would you say is the one thing you are most passionate about?

The people I care about.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?

Read, relax, go walking in the countryside, watch movies, visit stately homes and ancient sites, travel.

If someone who hasn’t read any of your books and asked you to describe your story in this set (the elevator pitch!) what would you say?

Hunky young vet and sexy older woman go from enemies to lovers with lots of drama in between!

Where can readers connect with you?

Thank you so much for stopping by!

I hope you’ll check out the Coming In Hot set. Please do check me out on social media and my website to find out more about me and my books.

There was a knock at the door. Brett looked up from where he was transferring hand-written notes onto the practice’s computer system—he hadn’t yet gotten comfortable with taking the iPad out on calls. He was paranoid he’d drop it in a cow pat, or worse. “Yes, come in!”

One of the veterinary surgery’s receptionists—an efficient blonde called Natasha—sidled in, a wry expression on her face. “Hi, Brett. I’m really sorry to bother you, but there’s a woman on the phone, and she’s being, um, rather rude.”

Frowning, Brett replied, “Who is it? And why is she being rude?”

Natasha blew out a breath and shrugged. “She won’t tell me what the issue is. Won’t even tell me what animal she has. She just keeps saying she’ll only speak to a ‘trained professional.’ I don’t know who it is, either, not really. All I know is her first name is—”

“Samantha?” Brett supplied, his shoulders slumping and eyebrows raising.

“Uh, yeah. How did you know? Oh God, I haven’t gone and insulted one of your friends or something, have I? I didn’t mean to, honestly. It’s just she’s being a bit difficult…”

“Natasha, don’t panic. She’s no friend of mine. I’ve never even met the woman. Besides, if she was one of my friends, I’d be giving her a bollocking for being rude to one my staff, wouldn’t I? Anyway, if it’s the Samantha I think it is, then she’s being very difficult, and you’re being overly polite. Andrew warned me about her.”

“He did?”

“Yeah. Bloody typical that she’d phone while he’s away. The man barely ever takes a holiday, and now he finally has, his most awkward client is on the blower. He damn well owes me one after this.”

“If she’s a regular client, how come I’ve never spoken to her before?”

Shrugging, Brett replied, “Dunno. Maybe she’s got Andrew’s mobile number, or something?”

Natasha gasped. “But he never gives out his mobile number to clients. He’s very strict about that—always asks us to take a message and if it’s urgent, pass it on to him directly.”

“Yeah…” Brett scratched his head. “He didn’t say much about her, beyond that she can be difficult. Honestly, I was a bit distracted when he mentioned it so I wasn’t paying a great deal of attention. I wish I’d asked more questions now, but I never actually thought I’d have the misfortune of having to deal with her.”

“You haven’t, yet.” Natasha raised her eyebrows and pointed with her chin towards the phone on his desk.

“Good point.” He gave a wan smile. “Suppose I’d better find out what she wants, hadn’t I? If she’s special enough to have Andrew’s precious mobile phone number, then I probably ought to keep her sweet.”

“Probably wise.” Natasha left the room, closing the door behind her, but not before Brett spotted the slight smile on her face. Relieved to pass on the bitchy customer to him, no doubt.

Taking a deep breath, he picked up the phone. “Hello, Brett Coulson speaking, how can I help?”

“Oh,” came the reply, “Brett. Ah yes, you’re the other vet, aren’t you? Jolly good. Know what you’re talking about, do you?” The woman’s accent was posh, southern. Like she’d been to a finishing school or something.

Gritting his teeth, Brett then pasted a smile on his face, hoping it would be apparent in his tone, despite the daggers he was actually staring at her through the handset. “Yes, I most certainly do.” Should fucking do, after five years of training and the same again working in the profession. I’m not on bloody work experience here.

“But you sound so young.”

Glad she couldn’t see him, Brett rolled his eyes. Her problem obviously wasn’t an emergency, the way she was waffling on, time-wasting. “I’m almost twenty-nine, Mrs…”

“It’s Ms, actually. Samantha Hanson-Bishop here. So you’re still a baby then, really.”

“Is there something I can help you with, Ms Hanson-Bishop? Only I’ve a call to go out on in a few minutes.” He couldn’t help the emphasis he’d put on the Ms. It could be construed as sarcastic, but it was still a damn sight more polite than anything he really wanted to say. Would she just get to the point already?

ROOM WITH BOOKS encourages you to follow the tour and please leave comments!

GENRE: Historical Fiction

About the Book

This story is based around the life of one of the most fascinating and enigmatic sportsmen of his era, Achille Varzi: multiple race winner, twice Racing Champion of Italy and a hero to his many followers.  Told partly through the eyes of Varzi and partly by fictional Italian-Australian racing journalist Paul Bassi, we follow the many triumphs and tragedies of Varzi’s life: his passionate love affair with Ilse, his tragic morphine addiction, his recovery from his addictions, his marriage to Norma and his re-signing to race for Alfa Romeo.

Only war intervenes, and Paul and his wife Pia leave Achille to spy for the British at the naval base in Naples.  Paul and Pia endure hundreds of Allied air-raids, they join the partisans who fought off the German army until the Allies could rescue them, and then they survive in a near-ruined city as best they can.

By 1946 Italy is still shattered but life is returning to normal, and no more normal is Achille Varzi winning the Grand Prix of Italy that year.  Over the next two seasons Achille Varzi scores more successes, until he makes his only ever driving mistake and is killed in Switzerland in 1948.  Even though he died too young, Paul and Pia know that Achille Varzi would never have lived in his life in any other way.

The porter nodded slowly.  “My name is Ludwig Broder and I was a journalist once.”

“What happened?”

“It’s the way of things.”

Paul wondered the way of what things, until he realised.  He looked around and nobody was close.  “Persecution?” Paul asked quietly.

Herr Broder nodded slowly.

“I’m sorry to hear about your misfortune, Herr Broder.”

“It was only a newspaper in Koblenz, but….”

Paul was sure that persecution would get worse.  “Should you leave?” Paul asked quietly.

“To where?  My family has lived in this region for more than four generations.”

“If you leave, one day you can come back when it’s better.”  Paul thought about options.  “You speak good English.  Go now, while you can.”

Herr Broder demurred.

“I was born and raised in Australia and I moved to Italy two years ago,” Paul said.  “Because I spoke Italian, Italy became my home.”

“Where are you staying Herr Bassi?”

“Hotel Ringhaus.  We can take our luggage; it’s not far.”

Her Broder nodded and Paul opened his wallet and took out a twenty mark note.  “Thank you for your trouble, Herr Broder.”

“Thank you,” Herr Broder said before placing the note in his pocket.

Paul picked up his case and bag and Pia, looking baffled, grabbed hers.

“One day it may be too late,” Paul said.  “Goodbye and good luck.”

“Enjoy your racing Herr Bassi.”

Paul headed towards the hotel with Pia alongside.

“Che cosa?” Pia asked.

“He’s Jewish,” Paul said in Italian.  “I told him to leave now, while he can.”

“People shouldn’t have to leave their country just because they’re Jewish.”

“If you were Jewish; what would you do?”

“I would leave.”

“He used to work for a newspaper, but as you know….”

“No public servants, no teachers, no writers, no academics, no journalists.”

“I’m sure it will get worse.”

Pia shrugged her shoulders and Paul wondered how much worse it could get.  But he was sure it would get worse.

Author Q&A

It is my pleasure to welcome Mark Morey, author of The Last Great Race,  to Room With Books!

Hello, Mark! Please tell us about yourself.

I am in my fifties and I have been writing for about 10 years now.  In real life I am an information technology analyst and have been now for many, many years.  My hobbies include writing of course, travel and motorcycle riding.  My philosophy for life is to do it now because you never know what the future may bring.

Did you always want to be a writer?

Writing came later in life, and remains beyond my career of information technology analyst.  I actually fell into information technology by accident when the industry was young, and it suited me at the time and I was good at it.  A lot of what I do in my job is writing, and writing for pleasure came from that.

How long have you been writing and who or what inspired you to write?

I wrote my first novel 11 years ago and it was published 4 years ago.  I have always liked reading good books, and one day I went to the local library to borrow a book, but I couldn’t find one. Particularly the books by male authors had stereotyped, cliche characters, the loner who eventually rights all wrongs but never finds love or companionship.  I thought I could do better than that, which became the inspiration for that novel, The Red Sun Will Come.

Do you do a job in addition to writing and would you tell us more about it?

I am an information technology analyst, which means liaising between system users and technologists to design the best and most cost-effective solutions for business problems.  It’s a job dealing with people in a variety of scenarios: workshops, focus groups and one-on-one, and then documenting and agreeing outcomes.  It also involves writing specifications, reference manuals and training materials.

How would you summarize this book in less than 20 words?

This is a fictionalised account of a real-life story that seems too incredible to be true, only it is.

Now, let’s talk about writing and how you came to be a published author.

I decided to start with genre fiction and write a crime novel, but to make it different I set it in Moscow, Russia.  That was a particularly good setting with government corruption and the Russian Mafia, and with many re-drafts I got it to a state where it was suitable for publication.  In 2012 Club Lighthouse picked up The Red Sun Will Come and the sequel, Souls In Darkness.  The latter is a dark mystery set in Siberia and is a great story.  I find the more I write the easier it is to produce a polished, complete story.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

I considered myself a writer when The Red Sun Will Come was published in 2012.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I finished the first draft of The Red Sun Will Come in 2006, and revised it over the next 18 months including getting it professionally edited.  It was published in 2012.  This shows that patience is an essential attribute for new authors.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to “The End”?

I researched and completed the first draft of my latest novel, The Adulterous Bride, in four months.  It needs a beta reader or two, a revision from there, and then it may be ready.  In the meantime I am concentrating on publicity for The Last Great Race, which really prevents me from writing.

What can we expect from you in the future? More of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

The Adulterous Bride remains in the realm of historical fiction being set in Venice in 1428.  After that I don’t know, but I will do something that’s not historical fiction.

Who is your favorite character from your books and why are they your favorite?

The fictional journalist Paul Bassi who’s able to turn his obsession into his career, and who completely and totally adores the gorgeous Pia Donati.  He’s a good man who has it all.

What is your routine for writing?

If I’m going well I will write for three or four hours a day for a number of days in a row, and then when I feel stale I will take a break for a day or two.  When I’m writing historical fiction I have to pause and do additional research like the clothes they may have worn, the price of goods and a myriad of other details.  I don’t believe in writing every day because what may come out of that is often unusable.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

I always write the story and then struggle to find a title for it!

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books?

I always choose a theme and write to that, and the theme will be embedded in the story.  In the case of The Last Great Race the theme is ‘pride comes before the fall’, which summarises what really happened.  There are other messages like the ability to romantically love two people at the same time, something many don’t believe is possible but I know it is.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

With the advent of eBooks and print on demand, the traditional publishing model of offset printing an initial run, flooding retail stores and then pulping them after a few months has become obsolete.  Instead these stories are now always available, either by download or in hard-copy, and can be sold months and even years after first publication.  Print on demand is for those who want a traditional hard copy in their hands, doing away with the need for offset printing.  High-quality, low cost and readily available on-line.

What is your favorite book and why is it your favorite? How many times would you estimate you’ve read it?

My favourite author is Paolo Coelho and I have everything he has written.  All of them are my favourites.

Do you read all the reviews of your books?

I always read all the reviews of my books.  I take on board any positive criticisms, but I also appreciate that every reader has their preferences and my stories may not be what they prefer.

That’s enough of the serious business. How about a handful of fun questions?

What is your favorite food? I have too many favourites to name!  I always eat healthy food and I never eat so-called junk food.

Who is your favorite singer or group? The Italian singer Laura Pausini

What is your favorite color? My favourite colour is blue.

What is your ideal getaway dream vacation? We always visit places we haven’t been to before, staying in apartments and living like locals while we’re there.  It may be Paris or it may be Moscow, but we keep away from tourist hotels and do it the hard way, and come home with great memories as a result of that.

What final words would you offer to our readers?

I hope you buy and read my story because I’m sure you will enjoy it.  It’s set mostly in fascist Italy but it also travels to Germany just as the Nazis have taken power, while over-arching that is one of the most tragic love stories that has ever, ever happened.

Thank you for spending time with us at Room With Books, Mark. I appreciate your time and wish you the best with The Last Great Race. I hope you will come back again!

Meet the Author

Writing technical documentation and advertising material formed a large part of my career for many decades.  Writing a novel didn’t cross my mind until relatively recently, where the combination of too many years writing dry, technical documents and a visit to the local library where I couldn’t find a book that interested me led me consider a new pastime. Write a book. That book may never be published, but I felt my follow-up cross-cultural crime with romance hybrid set in Russia had more potential. So much so that I wrote a sequel that took those characters on a journey to a very dark place.

Once those books were published by Club Lighthouse and garnered good reviews I wrote in a very different place and time.  My two novels set in Victorian Britain were published by Wings ePress in July and August of 2014. These have been followed by a story set against the background of Australia’s involvement on the Western Front, published in August 2015. Australia’s contribution to the battles on the Western Front and to ultimate victory is a story not well known, but should be better known.

Staying within the realm of historical fiction, one of the most successful sportsmen of the 1930s, Achille Varzi, lived a dramatic and tumultuous life.  It is a wonder his story hasn’t been told before, beyond non fiction written in Italian.  The Last Great Race follows the highs and lows of Varzi’s motor racing career, and stays in fascist Italy during the dark days of World War Two.

Author Lizzie Chantree?

LC Author Photo

An inventive author!

Lizzie is a wife and mum, who is also an accomplished inventor, businesswoman and artist. She founded her first company at the age of 17 and has been creating products ever since!

She went to a design and advertising college, called The School of Communication Arts, which was based in London. They took only a handful of students each year from all over the world, so she made the most of the opportunity by learning everything she could about how to create products, advertise and package them.

After college she started her own business opening her first retail venture. She designed and sold her own brand of products to customers all over the world. This business grew to two shops and a wholesale business, including a retail gift catalogue, which Lizzie ran for over 20 years.

During this time she also invented a product called Runaway Spray, which is a lipstick size spray, perfect for a ladies handbag, that prevents further ‘ladders’ or ‘runs’ in stockings or tights. She became one of Fair Play London’s Female Inventors of the Year. She also won business awards and the ‘Livewire’ competition, run by Shell UK in association with The Prince’s Trust. She was asked to return the following year as a ‘Livewire’ competition judge.

Lizzie’s daughter had been unwell for two years and to keep herself awake at night, she wrote her first novel, Babe Driven. Five years later, when her daughter’s health improved, she had it professionally edited and happened to read a magazine article about a well known author who was self-publishing his novels. She discovered a brilliant book club called RRBC, (you should join!) and this helped her along her way as an author.

Currently Lizzie has written three books;

A sizzling beach read-Babe Driven:

A medical romance story-Love’s Child:

LC Book CoverHer latest book, which has just been released on Amazon:

A mystical romance-Finding Gina:

All of Lizzie’s books have strong central characters and a sprinkling of humour.

The characters are really fun, engaging and believable.

I am really looking forward to the authors next Novel… Give it a go!!!!’

Excerpt of chapter two from Finding Gina:

‘There’s something strange about that girl,’ hissed Rachel to Tom, her aunt’s resident baker, who was hands deep in flour as he stretched a batch of dough for the next day’s quota of cakes.

‘What do you mean?’ he asked quizzically, shaking flour dust from his nose and almost making himself sneeze. He looked at Gina through the glass door to the tearoom and thought she looked kind of cute!

‘I mean that she is always smiling and I’ve never seen her here with the same person, other than my aunt a few times. It’s a bit like she picks up waifs and strays, but she’s also a stray herself. Do you know what I mean?’

Tom raised his eyebrows at Rachel’s views on their customer. She was always offering an opinion on everyone that girl; from the delivery boy, to that unfortunate young mother with the face full of spots!

Rachel waited for Tom to reply, then raised her hands into the air in surrender and grabbed the next order that was sitting ready to be delivered to table three, slapping the plates together and almost covering a pretty cupcake in coffee as it sloshed onto the saucer.

Kim Kash Author Spotlight @kash_kim @BPICPromos

Author Spotlight on

Kim Kash

Kim Kash is the author of two novels in the Jamie August series: Ocean City Cover-up (2015) and Ocean City Lowdown (2013). She also wrote the bestselling Ocean City: A Guide to Maryland’s Seaside Resort (2009), and is currently working on the next installment in the Jamie August series. Kim divides her time between Maryland and the Middle East, which can be weird.

What inspired you to write your first book?

As a freelance writer back in 2008, I wrote a travel guide to Ocean City, Maryland for the Tourist Town series (Ocean City: A Guide to Maryland’s Seaside Resort). While I was researching that book, I wanted to read some good mysteries set in the region—and I found that there aren’t very many. Ocean City is a gold mine of funny characters and kitschy, fun scenery, and it holds plenty of memories from my own life. I was surprised that the OC-inspired fiction choices were so thin, so I decided to chime in with my own series.

Have you ever disliked something you wrote?

I dislike everything I write, the first time around! I have done a lot of work as a professional editor, and it’s very difficult for me to just shut up and write, you know? My first drafts are always a mess, and I hate them. But I’m finally getting into the rhythm of it and learning to get out of my own way and just get the draft done. Then I edit, edit, and edit again. In terms of disliking any finished pieces? I’m pretty happy with my creative writing. I try not to get my ego too caught up in any of it, though. I write campy genre fiction, with glee! I love it that readers enjoy my stuff, but when I get a cranky Amazon review, it doesn’t cause much existential angst.

How has your writing career changed in the past year?

My writing career just changed in the last month, because I have taken a full-time job. I’m coordinating logistics for the expatriate school in my community, which definitely scratches my organizational itch. I’m really happy about this change. And yet…. I haven’t had to report to work wearing real clothes and makeup in almost ten years. No more days of working in my pajamas on the couch with only my cat Eddie for company. I am still adjusting to the time crunch, trying to figure out put in a full day’s work and still eat healthy, exercise and get enough sleep–plus finish the third novel. Good Lord! Other people do this, I keep telling myself. And it is getting better: I’m getting more efficient, and I have every intention of finishing the next book in my series.

What are you reading now or what do you have in your TBR pile?

Next up is Bad Citizen Corporation, the debut crime novel of fellow UCSB grad S.W. Lauden. It came out last month with some wildly enthusiastic reviews, so I’m pretty excited to read it—and not just because we cut our teeth at the same college newspaper. Lauden is a big supporter of indie fiction, interviewing fellow authors and organizing readings and events in Southern California. We need somebody like Lauden on the East Coast—or maybe we have one, but I haven’t been invited to the party yet. Living in Saudi Arabia but writing about Ocean City, Maryland does leave me rather disconnected with what’s going on with my community of authors.

What are you working on now?

I’m well into Ocean City Getaway, the third in the Jamie August series. In this installment, Jamie faces such daunting challenges as infiltrating a ring of con artists working the eastern seaboard; fighting against her vegetarian boyfriend’s campaign to make her stop eating crabcakes (this may involve a breakup); and smiling through her best friend’s beach wedding while wearing an off-the-shoulder lavender bridesmaid’s dress.

Ocean City Lowdown: A Jamie August Novel (Book 1)

Ocean City Lowdown introduces Eastern Shore Maryland reporter Jamie August, who has a talent for unearthing more than her editor wants and a weakness for Ravens jerseys and sparkly underwear. She is assigned to cover the grand opening of a big new housing development in Ocean City, Maryland. But instead of writing about wrap-around porches and rattan furnishings, she uncovers kickbacks and payoffs, blackmail and murder. Jamie’s tenacity, smarts, and sheer recklessness—plus some smokin’ striptease dance moves—can get her out of some tight spots, but are they enough to save her from a psychopathic arsonist and two generations of corrupt real estate tycoons?

Ocean City Cover-up: A Jamie August Novel (Book 2)

Euro-trash collides with American gangsta in Maryland’s gleefully cheesy beach resort. Reporter Jamie August befriends a spoiled heiress who is being pursued by Russian mobsters—and a chart-topping rap star. Meanwhile, a raging crime spree is keeping Jamie busy—and so is a hot new boyfriend and a strict jogging and frozen custard fitness plan. Action careens from OC to Dubai, from the wild shores of Assateague to a wild-west campground. Will Jamie survive to debut her fringed leopard-print bikini?

Annabel Fanning Spotlight @annabelfanning

Author 3

Author 1Annabel Fanning is a British-born, Australian-based writer and full-time cat enthusiast. When she’s not indulging in her love of writing, she likes to paint her nails, shop and wander off into nature — not necessarily in that order.

She began writing songs as a child, the most memorable of which was entitled: “Tropical Night in Switzerland”. Throughout her teens, songwriting was the most rebellious form of expression that she was willing to partake in (no tattoos, drugs, or biker boys) and her love for storytelling developed. There was just one problem: music wasn’t her passion. A month before her 20th birthday whilst sitting under the Californian sun a few deck chairs down from Robert Pattinson, inspiration struck, and Annabel began writing her first novel. The years flew by and now at 26, Annabel has written a handful of novels, which she plans on releasing throughout 2015/16. She’d really like it if you read them.

About the Series

Freya Nissan grew up knowing that she was different. A free spirit, an outsider, a maverick who sees beyond the confines of her human world. She’s the soulful, idle daydreamer of her sleepy English village, who no one believes will ever amount to much…until the day she does.

Her visionary beliefs spark in her a passion to bring to life the dreams she has at night — dreams of journeying to other realms (entire worlds that exist alongside and even intertwine with the Earth we live on now). And as this story embarks, Freya disappears from her village in search of a discovery that will change her forever.

Christian Delaney died a long time ago. From that day to this he has been waiting for a love that seems determined to elude him…until the day Freya appears.

The inter-dimensional love story that unfolds between them proves to be as unique as it is troublesome, for not all are enchanted by Freya’s capabilities and for daring to be different she and Christian might just pay the ultimate price.

This series debut from bestselling author Annabel Fanning delivers a thrilling and compelling tale of adventure, love, and believing in your dreams.

“So, where am I?” I ask nervously, walking forward and hoping that this awkward feeling will disappear very soon.

But before I can get an answer, I stumble over my own feet and fall forwards. He catches me in his arms without moving backwards. My hands are splayed on his chest. I remove my left one immediately, but the right one stays where it is. Over his heart.

We stare at each other. There’s a moment’s silence, which feels like hours. Then understanding comes pouring into me.

Oh my God!

I look into his eyes, my own now flooded with a mixture of panic and accusation. He stares sadly back, obviously I’ve reacted the way he feared I would.

I feel nothing under my hand. There is no heartbeat.

“Am I dead?” I whisper.

Images flash through my mind — my parents, Felix, my home…can this place really be where I am safest?

He looks down, then back into my eyes. The back of his hand brushes softly over my bruised cheek, but I pull it away. This is no time for him to be seducing me.

“Am I dead?” I ask again, a little more firmly.

He gently takes my hand off of his chest and places it over my own heart. I feel its quickened pace and sigh in relief.

“No, Freya, you’re not dead,” he says, seriously. “But I am.”

‎Story Time

This is The Portal Opener’s brush with someone famous (Robert Pattinson).

In 2008 I lived in LA, writing and recording music. I was staying in a huge apartment complex and when I first arrived I took the bus everywhere.

I was just outside the complex coming back from the bus stop when an old beat-up black BMW coupe (I remember it because it was SO cool) drove past and I did a double take at the driver. Being a HUGE Harry Potter fan I immediately recognised Cedric Diggory was driving. I thought that was cool, then forgot all about it.

In July(ish) I went to the cinema and one of the trailers before the film was this darkly-lit indie-looking thing which didn’t make a very good first impression on me. Twas the trailer for Twilight.

By mid-September I had began writing The Portal Opener. I was 19 and didn’t have a fake ID, so had to spend every night in the small apartment I shared. And because I was cooped up all night, I spent everyday sitting on a lounger by the pool, in the beautiful Californian late-summer sun, my computer on my lap, writing, writing, writing.

Everyday Mr. Edward Cullen himself showed up and sat by the pool too. This went on for about six weeks. Me writing, him reading scripts/books or doing I don’t know what. Sometimes we were on opposite sides, sometimes right next to each other.

Over those weeks, I saw his anonymity disappear. There used to be no one at the pool during the day, but quietly more and more girls appeared the closer Twilight came to being released.

At the end of October, on the same day, I flew home to Perth and he started the press junket for Twilight. I finished writing The Portal Opener two weeks later. A month later still I was sat in the cinema watching Twilight, thinking…if only I’d said hello!

“LOVE and SEX at once, is a powerful combination.”

She Part 1 Cover

Escape into Annabel Fanning’s feel-good bestselling erotic debut. She Part 1 is a contemporary and humorous look into the lives of two people who are on the precipice of true love. The novel uniquely crosses several genres, mixing first-grade erotica seamlessly with women’s lit and breathtaking romance.

The story unfolds over sixteen thrilling and erotically-charged days, during which the reader is thrust into the heart of Paris, the novel’s backdrop, and into the daily lives of the construction world’s elite.

Logan Leary is a reformed bad-boy who moved to the city of love fifteen years ago to start his life over. Now he owns one of Paris’s most successful companies and leads as seemingly charmed life. There’s just one thing missing: Gemima Samuels.

Gemima Samuels moved to Paris with her down-on-his-luck boyfriend eight years ago. She coasted through life (in that annoying way we sometimes do) until her boyfriend cheated on her and life dealt her a wake up call. Choosing to start afresh, Gemima ends her relationship and quits her job before being hired by the most prestigious interior design firm in the city.

A supposedly inconsequential lunch date turns out to be the start of something phenomenal that will change both of their lives forever.

Set in picturesque Paris, She Part 1 is an erotic tale about falling madly in love. Combining sex, passion, and romance, these two high-flying professionals will leave you saying, “Oh, la la!”

She Part 2 Wrap

“LOVE and SEX at once, is a powerful combination. LOVE and SEX in Paris, is better.”

She Part 2 Cover

In this sequel Annabel continues to effortlessly marry several genres. From laugh-out-loud comedy to steaming erotica to heart pounding romance, She Part 2 has it all.

Picking up where Part 1 left off, Gemima and Logan escape Paris for the weekend to indulge in all manner of pleasurable things on the French Riviera. Relaxation, sightseeing and sex — it’s a perfect combination!

Once back in Paris, life hands out a few surprises, from troublesome ex-boyfriends, to changes at work, to a heartwarming best friends confession. But the lead up to Logan’s birthday brings one event that Gemima must conquer (and try her best not to say anything inappropriate which, you know, is hard for her!) She must meet Logan’s parents, and his bastard of a brother…

Taking place over thirteen electric days, She Part 2 continues to explore love, sex and a relationship unlike any other you’ve ever read. This smart-talking duo will leave you saying, “Oh mon dieu!”

Part 1 is 115,000 words and Part 2 is 150,000 of “oh, la la” goodness. For readers 18+ over only. Guest Post

I incorporated a lot of music in these series (each chapter is named after a song, as is the entire series). The chapter playlists can be found here: http://www.annabelfanning.com/music-playlist.html

I LOVE music! It’s a huge part of my life. I spent all of my teen years writing songs and coming up with melodies and putting them to tracks in various recording studios around the city where I live. Music features heavily in the two book series that I wrote before She Part 1 & 2, however with these books I went a little further and decided to name each chapter in the books after a song that I feel best resonates with the contents of the corresponding chapter. Here’s what I came up with…

She Part 1 soundtrack:

1. Begin Again by Taylor Swift

(the lyrics “on a Wednesday in a cafe, I watched it begin again” could not have been more perfect, because the book starts on Wednesday and (you guessed) the first scene is in a cafe, and the entire chapter is about the excitement of a new beginning)

2. My Funny Valentine by Alice Fredenham (an Ella Fitzgerald cover)

3. Searchlight by Jamie Catto, Kelli Ali, Duncan Bridgeman, Paul Herman, Lévon Min

(I found this song whilst cruising the Chillout Lounge music channel like my characters in the book do. It’s become of my favourite songs ever!)

4. Domino by Jesse J

5. Tell Me by Mia Dyson

6. Ready For Love by India Arie

7. Nothing At All by Santana feat. Musiq

(This choice was purely about the music rather than the lyrics. The smooth and funky Santana beat was perfect for the sexy dancing scenes, oh lala!)

8. You Shook Me All Night Long by ACDC

9. Mirrors by Boyce Avenue (a Justin Timberlake cover)

10. Happy by Pharrell Williams

(Although perfect for the story, this is also a bit of an homage to my friend, who I was staying with when I wrote She Part 1. Happy was her ringtone, and her phone used to ring off the hook.)

11. Replay by Zendaya

12. Burn by Ellie Goulding

13. You Got It by Roy Orbison

She Part 2 soundtrack:

1. Kill Of The night by Gin Wigmore

(I went back and forth on whether or not to use this one. It’s just so damn cool, that I had to go for it.)

2. I’ll Be Your Lover, Too by Van Morrison

3. Ex’s And Oh’s by Elle King

(A late edition which fits perfectly with this chapter. This is the only song in the series that I didn’t find myself. Logan’s number 1 fan, Jennifer, found this one for me.)

4. Empire by Shakira

5. What A Man by Jessica Mauboy (a Linda Lyndell cover)

(Dedicated from Gemima to Mr. Logan Leary.)

6. Dancing In The Dark by Bruce Springsteen

7. Inside Out by Bryan Adams

8. The Best by Tuna Turner

9. Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson

10. Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon

(Eighteen months I had this song in mind for these particular scenes. My patience paid off, this is a great part of the story, even if I do say so myself!)

11. It’s My Party by Lesley Gore

12. Jungle by Emma Louise

13. Everything Has Changed by Taylor Swift, ft. Ed Sheeran

(It seems fitting that the penultimate chapter links back to the very first one.)

14. She by Charles Aznavour

(Ah, the namesake of the entire series! This is such a beautiful, striking and romantic song, and so utterly perfect for Logan to dedicate to Gemima. I couldn’t have finished it in any other way.)

If you’d like to have a little jam session, all the songs are available to listen to on my website: www.annabelfanning.com

Author Bio

Melody Dawn is a contemporary romance author residing in Texas. She started reading romance novels when she was a teenager and became addicted to Happily Ever After’s. She got her own HEA when she met her soulmate 20 years ago and they have been together ever since.  They have two furbabies who think they are Kings of the Castle and require a ton of attention. When she is not reading or writing, she loves to refurbish old furniture into new pieces, scrapbook, and most of all spend time with her main guy.

Bonus Scene

To Live Again
by Melody Dawn
Getting back from Chipotle’s with Jayson, I go into my room and lie down on the bed. I’m not sure what to think of him. Of course, he’s gorgeous and seems interested in me, but for how long and why? I think it’s probably best that we just stay study partners. This way when his attention moves elsewhere, I’m not the even more broken girl in the corner. With my mind made up, I drift off to sleep.
I’m dreaming a really awesome dream about Jayson without a shirt until I’m rudely awakened by my dear best friend jumping on my bed. “Hey chick, wake up! So, what happened with you and that beautiful hunk of man after you left?” I roll my eyes and say, “Uh, nothing! He took me back to campus; we both had more classes. Why? Where did you go with his twin?”
She blushes and I lean towards her. “Why do you smell like him?” She has this look in her eye and I have a feeling I know what happened. But, all she says is he gave her a hug. Yeah, I bet he did…like an after sex hug that says “Let’s do this again.” I saw the two of them eye-** each other while we were all having lunch. I almost say something about him being a player, but I just keep my mouth shut. Madison and I do not have the same ideas towards casual sex so it wouldn’t do me any good to say anything. If that is what she wants with Connor Reece, then who am I to say anything; I just hope he doesn’t hurt her. Wow, first Jayson and now Connor; I evidently do not have a huge respect for the male gender.
Lying down next to me, she insists I tell her everything about how Jayson and I met. When I get to the part about him being in my desk, she starts laughing like a crazy person. “Oh my god, did you really go up and tell him to move,” she gasps out. I give her a punch in the shoulder and say, “Yes! You know how I like to sit in the same seat in every class.” Laughing even harder, she says, “If he still wanted to take you to lunch after learning about your insane tendencies, you need to grab him and hold on!”
“Oh what the hell ever,” I say heatedly! But, not really meaning it. We love to tease each other and she thinks my somewhat OCD brain is hilarious. I tell her that I think he is interested, but I’m not going to let it go anywhere. Her mouth drops open and with big eyes, she says, “Why? That guy is really into you. Even Connor says so.” I feel a little glimmer of hope in my stomach, but I bury it and say, “Because I just know how it will be and I don’t need to be heartbroken on top of everything else.”
Madison is quiet for a few moments and she finally says, “You are going to wish that you didn’t let this opportunity pass you by. You don’t have to marry him, but what is wrong with being with someone who obviously likes you for however long it lasts?” I can’t explain it to her, I just know that he will break me. And I’m already broken beyond repair. Besides, a guy like him, needs someone who is living and not just existing.
Seeing that she isn’t going to get anything else out of me, Madison sits up and hugs me; then says she has to go and study. I tease her and say she is going to be daydreaming about Connor instead of studying, and she just blushes with no answer. As she walks out the door without saying her usual sexual insinuations, I wonder if maybe she really likes this guy. I lie there a little while longer thinking about Jayson. I may not let things go anywhere with him, but here in my room, he is mine. I can think about him and what we could have been. It might sound sad, but in my mind, it gives me hope that maybe one day, I will have what I am imagining. Of course, it won’t be with him, but maybe someone else who isn’t quite so dangerous to my heart and soul.

Author Interview with Melody Dawn

Can you tell us your latest news?
The latest news is that this is going to turn into a series. I always only intended to write one book, but Jayson, the H in my story, has a twin brother; and he is getting his own book. His character developed in a much bigger way than I expected.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I never intended to actually become a writer. I had a story in my head for several years that I thought might make a good book, but I never really believed it would happen. As far as considering myself a writer, I’m still not sure that I do.
Now I love music just as much as reading, I normally listen to music while I am reading. Do you think that you characters have theme songs? What would they be?
Definitely! For Chloe, the main female character, it would be Invincible by Kelly Clarkson, Jayson, the main male character, it would be All of Me by John Legend, Connor (Jayson’s twin)-Forever Night Stand by Rayen Belchere, and Madison (Chloe’s best friend) would be Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson
Are the experiences fact based or from your imagination?
Possibly some things in the story may be true…obviously, Chloe’s tragedy isn’t real, but some other things yes, just not saying which J
Which comes first? The character’s story, or, the idea for the novel?
I think each writing project varies. For To Live Again, it was the story that came first, but for the second book, it was definitely the character. There is possibly a third book and the character and the story both kind of hit me at the same time.
