Meet the Author

An avid reader since her childhood years and being an only child, Roberta always enjoyed the company of her fictional friends from the children’s books she loved reading, while she dreamed of writing her own stories one day.

It was when she discovered novels by authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy in her teenage years that she realized it was time she put down in words the stories she had kept well hidden in her mind until then.

What started as a hobby, soon turned into a real passion and a way of life, until she could no longer keep the stories to herself, and decided to get over her fears and share them with the world.

Roberta lives in Italy, but her dream is to move out of her country and live either in a thatched cottage in the Irish countryside or in a country house with a swing on the back porch, somewhere in the United States, where she would love to spend her days writing novels as a full-time job, and maybe one day even get as far as writing a screenplay for a movie.

Ryan had just picked up his coat when his phone started ringing. He smiled when he saw ‘Val’ flash on the display.

“Hey, you’re awake! I thought I’d have to break down your door to wake you up.”

Valerie giggled, although it didn’t sound as happy as it normally did. Maybe it was just because she’d slept all day and after her double shift and was still a little groggy.

“I got a phone call from the hospital. I have to work tonight.” she said in a sad tone. Ryan snorted. “The doctor on duty had an emergency at home and called to say he wouldn’t be able to go to work. I was on call, so they asked me to fill in for him. I’m sorry, Ryan.”

“Couldn’t you say you had a prior engagement or something? Call in sick, maybe?”

“Ryan, you know I can’t do that. I told you I’d be on call tonight.”

“But I haven’t seen you in over two months and I was really looking forward to telling you everything about the tour.”

“I know; I really wanted to spend some time with you too.”

Ryan let out a sigh and slumped down on his bed. Why couldn’t she have a normal nine-to-five office job that wouldn’t interfere with their dinner plans?

“Right, okay. I’ll cancel the reservation at the restaurant and have a microwave dinner all by myself.” Ryan said in a huff. Valerie chuckled. “I hope you feel guilty for ditching me like this, Doc.”

“I do. I feel awful but I’ll make it up to you, buddy.”

They said goodbye and after he hung up, he let out an annoyed sigh. He opened the freezer and took out microwave cheese macaroni, stared at the plastic box and put it back in; eating on his couch by himself sounded quite depressing right now.

He put on his coat and decided to surprise his girlfriend; he’d been looking forward to spending the evening chatting with Valerie after being away on tour for over two months, but since she wasn’t available, his girlfriend would do.

He stopped with his hand on the door handle when he realized the thought that had just crossed his mind. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Shouldn’t his girlfriend come first and his best friend immediately after? He shrugged. Jennifer had spent time with him during the tour; they’d met in Paris and she’d gone to London with him, too. It was only fair that Valerie would be his priority now.

While he was in the car, he thought about stopping at the hospital before going home to bring Valerie a cup of White Mocha and a muffin; he was sure it’d cheer her up and, if she wasn’t busy, maybe they’d manage to chat for a while. He’d missed her so much and he’d found himself wishing more than once that she could tour with him.

A weird sense of guilt hit him as soon as the thought formed. He had a girlfriend and he was supposed to wish she was the one following him on tour, not his best friend. But then again, what he felt for Valerie was totally innocent and different from what he felt for Jennifer; with Valerie he could be himself, the real Ryan from Dublin and he could talk about anything with her without ever being afraid of speaking his mind. When he was with Jennifer he was Ryan Wyler, the jazz star from Boston; it was all about his career and his name. He couldn’t deny that he and Jennifer had some great fun time together, but he’d started to doubt there was much more to their relationship outside the bed.

It was lame but if he had to be honest with himself, he’d stuck with her because her job took her away as often as his did, so he had a lot of free time to spend with Valerie. Jennifer had never really liked the idea of his best friend being a woman, but she’d never forbid him from seeing her; he wasn’t sure another girlfriend would’ve been so open-minded. Besides, he didn’t really need a girlfriend he could talk to; he had Valerie for that, so it was fine with him if all Jennifer wanted was some fun between the sheets. He was still young and not ready to settle down anyway.

He parked the car close to Jennifer’s apartment and ran in the rain toward the front door of the building. An elderly couple was walking out and held the door open for him, so he didn’t need to buzz. As he stood in front of her door, waiting for her to open up, he wondered whether he should’ve called first. He usually did, but this time he’d decided to surprise her. He ended up being the surprised one when she opened the door in a silk dressing gown, her face flushed and her hair disheveled.

“Ryan? I thought you said you’d be out with your friend tonight?” she asked in a surprised tone. Okay, that wasn’t exactly the kind of welcome he’d expected. He shifted his weight to his right foot and tucked his hands in the pockets of his coat.

“She had to work so I thought we could go out somewhere, have dinner together.”

Had her face just turned pale or was he imagining things? She fidgeted with the belt of her dressing gown, one he was sure he’d never seen before, and he wondered if that was a subtle way of telling him she wanted to stay at home. Not that he would mind, especially since it was pouring outside. He took a step forward and put his hands on her waist.

“Unless you have other plans that don’t include going out.”

She stiffened at his touch and he wondered what was going on. She’d never been the one to shy away from his touch; it was actually she who always started it all. He moved in to kiss her neck and froze when he smelled cologne on her skin.

Cologne?

He pulled back and stared questioningly at her; she didn’t meet his eyes and he suddenly understood the reason why she was so flushed and disheveled.

“Are you alone?” he asked straight out, knowing that beating around the bush would be useless. He’d suspected something in the past but this time he was damn sure she was hiding something.

“Ryan, listen. I can… I can explain.”

“You can explain why your skin smells like cologne? Go ahead, I’m all ears.”

He took another step forward but she didn’t move aside to let him in, so he was standing only inches away from her. Somehow this annoyed him even further.

“You said you wouldn’t be around tonight so I… um… I had a meeting. For work. The cologne… it must have lingered when we kissed goodbye. On the cheeks, of course.”

Ryan arched an eyebrow. “Seriously, Jen; do you think I’m that stupid?” She swallowed hard and looked at her hands, still fidgeting with her belt. “Is he still here? Where is he? Your bedroom, maybe?”

He pushed her aside and stepped into the apartment. She grabbed his arm to stop him but he pushed her away, taking big strides toward her bedroom. When he yanked the door open, he froze when he saw her manager, her fifty-year-old manager, flinch in her bed. What a cliché.

Jennifer reached him and tugged on his arm, making him turn around to look at her.

“Ryan, please. Let me explain.”

“How long has this been going on?” he asked through gritted teeth. “Have you been sleeping with that man and with me?”

“It’s not like that. It’s…”

“Not like that? Try and find a good excuse now to explain why your manager is naked in your bed and you’re wearing nothing underneath that dressing gown.”

He felt sick to his stomach at the thought of having shared her with that disgusting old pervert. This was the very last straw. He’d turned a blind eye before, he’d forgiven her and believed her stupid excuses but this was it.

“Actually, don’t even bother. Go back to your buddy; we’re through.”

He spun and walked back toward the front door; she stopped him again, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the skin of his arm.

“I’m done with your lies. It’s over. You’re officially free to sleep with whomever you want; I don’t care.”

He yanked his arm free and ran down the flight of stairs, knowing she wouldn’t follow him. God, he’d been so stupid he wanted to kick himself. How had he ever let it get this far.

By the time he got back into his car his hair was soaked but he didn’t care. All he wanted to do was see Valerie. He knew she was the only one who’d manage to put his mind at ease. Kevin was in New York for a seminar and he didn’t want to talk about it over the phone. Valerie would help him make sense of this once and for all.

He should’ve known all Jennifer had ever wanted was to be seen with America’s jazz star, just so her chances of being seen by a TV producer would improve and maybe she’d manage to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. That was what their relationship had always been about; he’d even come to suspect their chance meeting at that party in Las Vegas hadn’t been by chance at all. He wouldn’t be surprised to find out his manager was behind it; he’d always done his best to make sure Ryan was constantly on the front cover of magazines.

The rain had started falling harder and it was now coming down in sheets; even with the windscreen wipers of his BMW at full speed he could barely make out the road. He stopped at a red traffic light and smacked his hand hard on the steering wheel, cursing himself for being such a fool. Why should it bother him so much, though? After all, he’d never really loved Jennifer; he found her attractive but that was all there was. He’d never considered spending the rest of his life with her, so he should be happy it was over now. It was knowing she’d cheated on him that stung, though.

The light changed to green and he pressed down on the accelerator, feeling the need of seeing Valerie grow more intense. He was sure there was a Starbucks somewhere around here so he looked around trying to spot it. He needed a strong coffee now and he was sure Valerie would love a cup of White Mocha while he told her what an idiot he’d been. He squinted through the rain, cursing because he couldn’t see a thing. Where the hell was the damn coffee shop?

He turned his eyes back to the road and saw the road work signs a second too late. He swerved swiftly and pushed hard on the brake, trying to avoid the hurdles and bring the car back on the track. The wheels lost grip on the wet asphalt and when the left one hit a pothole, he lost control and the car started spinning until it stopped, crashing against a wall.

His last thought before the world went black was of Valerie.

McCoy, SJ: Love Like You’ve Never Been Hurt

LLYNBH Banner

About this book:

LoveLikeYouveNeverBeenHurt CoverThe Summer Lake contemporary romance series follows a group of friends from a small lakeside town in the California hills. They have kept in touch over the years and now, in their early thirties, their lives are drawing them back to Summer Lake and to each other.

Love Like You’ve Never Been Hurt (Summer Lake # 1)

Emma Douglas came to Summer Lake as an orphan twenty three years ago. After losing her parents so young and later suffering a disastrous marriage, she believes that love only ever leads to pain and loss.

When she meets Jack Benson, the business partner of her childhood friend Pete, she sees everything she used to long for in a man; tall, dark, and drop dead gorgeous! Despite their undeniable attraction, Emma is too scared to risk her heart, especially on a man so much like her ex – sexy, smart, funny, successful and no doubt the same kind of cheat!

When events lead them both to Summer Lake for the summer, will Jack be able to persuade her that he’s nothing like her ex in all the ways that really matter? That the love she used to dream of isn’t a little girl’s fantasy, but a reality they can share if she can get past her fear and learn to trust?

About the Author:

Perfect DayI’m SJ. A coffee addict, lover of chocolate and drinker of good wines. I’m a lost soul and a hopeless romantic. Reading and writing are necessary parts of who I am. Though perhaps not as necessary as coffee! I can drink coffee without writing, but I can’t write without drinking coffee.

I grew up loving romance novels, my first boyfriends were book boyfriends, but life intervened, as it tends to do, and I wandered the paths of non fiction for a couple of decades. My life changed completely a couple of years ago and I returned to Romance to find my escape.

I write ‘Sweet N Steamy’ stories because to me the ‘feel-good-factor’, both emotional and physical, is what makes Romance so appealing.

Excerpt:

“Don’t push me away, Emma, please?” She looked up, surprised by his tone. He was llooking at her with longing in his eyes.

“I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t have kissed you, but I couldn’t resist you.” She stared at him. “Please say something?”

“I didn’t stop you,” she stammered.

“See!” he smiled, his confidence returning. “You didn’t stop me because you wanted to kiss me too, and don’t say you didn’t enjoy it.”

Emma was quickly regaining her senses. She shook her head. “But we’re just friends,” she insisted.

Jack’s hands fell to his sides. “You kiss me like that and then say we’re only going to be friends?” His victorious smile was fading fast.

“Jack, I already told you, you can keep trying all you like, but… we’re just friends.”

“OK, how about friends with kisses?” He was trying to make her laugh again. Despite herself she had to smile at him. She began walking again to her apartment which wasn’t far now. He walked backwards in front of her.

“Friends who kiss sometimes?” he held his hands out hopefully. She couldn’t help but laugh.

“Friends who kissed once.”

“And who enjoyed it?” he raised his eyebrows.

She shook her head, amused by his playful determination.

“Is that a shake of the head for no?” he asked, stopping dead in front of her so that she walked right into him. His arms closed around her once more. She stepped back, not daring to stay that close to him.

“I was shaking my head at you, not in disagreement with you.” She kept on walking.

“OK, then,” he smiled. “Friends who kissed once and enjoyed it. Do I have it right now?”

She gave a small nod, grateful that they were almost to her building. She needed to escape from him now, because she badly wanted to kiss him again and that wasn’t how this was supposed to be working.

“How about friends who kissed once and enjoyed it so much they will kiss each other again, deeply and often?”

He was nothing if not persistent and he certainly knew how to make her laugh. She stopped abruptly in front of her building and looked up at him.

“Friends who must say goodnight now and who will see each other with their other friends out at the lake,” she smiled.

“Friends who are going to have coffee before they say good night?” he asked.

She shook her head. “I’ll see you at Pete’s this weekend.”

He gave her a rueful smile. “Thanks for tonight, Emma. This was good.”

“It was good. I enjoyed it so much, Jack. But, it really is best for us to be friends.”

He nodded and wrapped her in a hug.  He tipped her chin with his thumb and, holding her eyes, slowly placed a chaste kiss on her lips. He stepped back and smiled.

“Friends who kiss goodnight.” With that he turned and was gone.

Davis, Cheryl: Cora’s Kismet

Life was bad enough for twins, Cora and Viola Daniels, when suddenly their world was turned upside down.

When Liam Anderson shows up to save Cora and Viola from their situation, and to bring them back into their true family fold, Cora knows that there’s something special about him.

As she and her twin are being chased down by their, now former, guardians, Cora is finding out more and more about herself that she knew nothing about. Suddenly, they have loving parents, bound powers and a prophecy to fulfill, but first they have to find their soul mates that will help them through it all. All of this has to take place before their 18th birthday, which is only six months away.

Racing against time and deadly enemies, will Cora find her mate in Liam, or will all be lost? Will she be able to find herself in this new world and make it to the ceremony that will restore her powers, or will their enemies win, putting the world’s future at stake?

“Who are you?” Cora asked after they’d been sitting there for a few minutes.

“My name is Liam,” he replied.

“Liam,  I’m Cora and that’s my sister, Viola.”

“I  know,” Liam told her.

“How  do you know who we are and where we live?” Cora asked. She knew that she should  have known he would know who they were, since he’d been in their room looking for them, and had known who Patrick and Anna were, but adrenaline was making her thoughts scattered.

“You will get answers to your questions Cora, just not now. Right now we have to focus on getting where we’re going, without Patrick catching us. I need you to
trust me for now, so I can concentrate on protecting you and Viola,” Liam bit out, a little impatient. He wanted to explain things but knew that if he did, he’d be in deep trouble. It was not his place. He had his orders. Oh, but for her, he wanted to defy his orders and answer her questions. He wanted to soothe away the stress lines that had formed on her beautiful face.

“You keep saying that. It’s getting on my nerves. I have no reason to trust or believe you. Why should I?” Cora responded. Her nerves were wound tight and it
was evident in her voice.

“I know you don’t, yet, but you’re going to have to,” Liam responded, with a calmness that he wasn’t feeling. She was beginning to irritate him and the urge to tranq her, like they’d done with Viola, was getting stronger by the minute, but the attraction that he felt for her kept him from harming her in any way.

“Don’t even think about it!” Cora exclaimed a bit louder than she’d wanted to.

Liam’s head snapped around to look at her. His eyes narrowed while he studied her. There was no way that she was in his head. “Think about what?”

“Doing to me what you did to Viola,” Cora responded with an angry glare in his direction. “I could see it written all over your face that you were considering
it and I won’t let you.”

“Care to tell me how you are going to stop me if I decide that I’m going to?” Liam asked with slight amusement, that he didn’t feel, lacing his voice. How did she
do that? He knew that he’d kept his face blank.
“Trust me, you don’t want to know. Now, since there’s no sign of Patrick, can we go?” Cora asked getting impatient. All of a sudden she felt the need to move before
something bad happened.

Author Bio:

L Kendal Author photoI have lived in Droylsden, Manchester, all my life. I live with my parents, my younger sister, Cheryl, and her little girl, Faith.

I never knew what I wanted to do with my life until I began writing. This is my dream. I get most of my inspiration from music, I’ll sit listening to it and suddenly I’m no longer in the room. My stories play like videos in my mind, then I go and write them down.

I’m a very dark person, I love anything spooky, supernatural, or unexplainable, and so that’s the genre I want to write in for the rest of my life.

I work as a freelance graphic artist. I help my own publisher from time to time (World Castle Publications), I’m down as an available illustrator for Crooked Cat Publishing, and have recently been working with Empire Voices, creating the paperback and audio covers for their “Classics” line. I also create promo art and even book trailers. You can find out more about my art by clicking here.

Scary films are a true love of mine, although I find it very hard to find one these days that actually frightens me. My favourite story of all time is Bram Stoker’s, Dracula. The movie is equally as amazing. I also love, The Crow, Constantine and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Excerpt from Revelations:

Eligos lowered his head, and a moment later his swords appeared. I looked quickly at Keira. I could have sworn that for a brief second I saw a rush of panic cross her eyes.

“Your mind is set then?” he asked her.

“It is.”

“You said you would stay with me, that you would love me forever; I didn’t realize forever came with an expiration date.”

“I gave you the chance to come with me, to stay by my side, but you refused. You let me go alone.”

“Keira, please don’t do this,” Lucian and Tyler begged.

“I’m not doing anything; I’m simply standing here.”

“This is the way it has to be,” Eligos said in a bitterly cold tone, stepping closer to Keira and raising his swords.

“No, no please…please Keira! Eligos, please no,” Lily cried, attempting to run towards them. Danny and Hecate took hold of her and she fought to no avail to get free.

Eligos was only a few feet away from Keira now, and she stepped forward from the car. Her eyes were glowing the brightest of blue. Just when I thought nothing else could surprise me, Keira spoke.

“Eligos, I’ve already torn your heart apart; don’t let your body and soul suffer the same fate,” she taunted.

I heard some of the others gasp in shock. How could she be so cold towards someone she was supposed to have loved? This was not the person we had grown to love…this was not the Keira we all adored.

Excerpt:

The crowd thins, eventually leaving Annemarie and me alone in the hallway. She gathers her books and turns, quicker than I expect. I can’t maneuver out of her way. Our collision is mild, but jarring enough to dislodge the books from her hands.

“I’m so sorry,” she says as she kneels to pick up her scattered books.

I should be helping her, but my eyes are fixed on her graceful movements. Her long brown hair has fallen to the side, exposing the back of her softly curved neck, and every reach for a stray book lengthens her back and shoulders, inviting my touch. From the lowest point, just above the waist of her jeans, the tip of my finger would snake upward, navigating the gentle ridge of her spine until my hand laces through the richness of her flowing hair.

She tilts her head upward and grins at me. “Are you okay?”

Her voice snaps me from my fantasy. “Me? Yeah, I’m…fine. Oh, god. I’m so sorry. I should be picking up your books. You’re…you know.” I point feeble-mindedly at her extended stomach.

“Pregnant,” she says as she stands and straightens her blouse. “It’s all right to say it. I already know.”

The tip of her tongue unknowingly caresses her lower lip and the gentle arc of her full upper lip stretches, the smallest amount, as a smile slowly radiates across her flushed cheeks. These emotions, human, raw and…hormonal, forgotten for so long, now my only hope for clear thought is to suppress them. This has to be one of Satan’s sadistic jokes.

I laugh from embarrassment, but it’s the first time, in too long, that the sound of untempered, unrestrained joy bubbles from my heart. How can she have this warming effect on me? I want to say something cute and funny, but my mind is a hornet’s nest of scrambled thoughts.

“You look familiar,” she says. “Do we have a class together?”

I gaze into her hazel eyes. I must appear flustered because she tilts her head and grins.

“No. I mean, I don’t know. Today is my first day at this school.”

“Great. Welcome to RooseveltHigh School. My name is Annemarie.”

“I’m Wake.”

“Wake? That’s an interesting name.”

“Yeah, I know. It sounds like a funeral.”

“I like it. But I have to go. My little guy keeps pushing on my bladder. Lately, I have to use the restroom between every class.” She covers her mouth as if she gave too much information to someone she just met, but her joyful eyes can’t hide the smile hidden behind her hand.

“I can’t believe I just told you that.” She starts to hurry away, but looks over her shoulder. “See you later, Wake.”

I wave like an embarrassed adolescent. What a lousy first impression. I sounded like a bumbling, immature little boy.

I watch as she continues down the hall. I’ve seen other pregnant women before. They were clumsy, out of balance from carrying extra weight in front. But not Annemarie. Her steps are graceful and refined, like she’s gliding on a frozen pond. The gentle curves of her hips have remained slender, and sway hypnotically side-to-side in a rhythm that matches the drumming of my heart.

What am I thinking? Mooning about like a lovesick teenager. I can’t let my physical attraction for Annemarie erode the resolve I’ll need to complete this assignment. Yet, she’s the most beautiful… Does she even know how she makes me feel…how human? I’m stuck in a moment reserved for young love. There’s nothing merciful about denying the uninhibited excitement coursing through every inch of my body, but my plan is already in motion. The fate of my mother’s soul is in my hands. As much as I hate myself for thinking it, Annemarie’s beauty has to be extinguished. I have to collect her. I know Satan is convinced these human emotions will help, but right now, I wish I was a stone-cold demon. It would make it a lot easier to incinerate her goodness from the earth.

My heart stopped again if that was even possible. “You can’t leave,” he whispered. “I need you.” His warm breath kissed my lips as he bit his bottom lip and placed both of his hands around my face. I took a deep breath, leaning against the back of the shower. Was it really that obvious? “I’m fine. I’m just tired and-“

“You’re not fine,” he cut in. “And I can’t promise that everything will work out for you, but I can promise you that I will be there to pick up the pieces if they don’t.” He stepped up to the shower and ran his hand over the curtain, his eyes glued to mine. “I keep my promises.”

My heart sped up, listening to his heavy breathing from outside of the thin curtain.

Suddenly, thoughts of Jace naked and sharing a shower with me clouded my mind and it was the only thing that mattered at the moment. I not only needed him, but I wanted him. I couldn’t deny that fact anymore. The only thing that had been stopping me before was that I was scared. Scared of hurting Jace or possibly even myself.

“I care about?”

Jace’s words trailed off as I slowly opened the curtain and gazed into his beautiful eyes.

He stood there looking shocked and confused as I reached out and grabbed his hand. I slowly trailed my fingertips over his hand, as I looked him in the eye. He was so beautiful. Inside and out.

Not a word was spoken as he stepped into the shower, still wearing his briefs and placed his hands on my face. His hands trembled as he slowly ran a finger down to my lip and bit his own. “You’re so fucking beautiful,” he breathed. “I want you to be happy. I want to make you happy.”

My heartbeat skyrocketed and my legs became weak as he leaned in and pressed his tender lips against mine. His touch was so sensual and the taste of his mouth was sweeter than sugar, causing me to run my tongue over his lips to get a better taste.

I watched, holding my breath, as the water dripped over his perfect body, soaking the briefs that he still wore. It turned me on.

The whole room suddenly spun around us as my hands trailed over his bare chest, rubbing his smooth flesh, before resting on the outside of his wet briefs. The feel of his hardness made me moan.

I felt my body start to shake uncontrollably as he gripped my wet hips and swung me toward the back wall with passion in his eyes.

We both let out a low moan as he pressed me into the shower wall and roughly bit my bottom lip. “Are you sure that you’re ready for this?” he questioned running his hands up my face. “Because once I start, I won’t be able to stop.”
