REVIEW:

I must first admit, I am not entirely fond of preternatural books.  There was just something about Bohemian that drew my attention from the moment I became aware of it. I, however, thought I could read Bohemian as a stand-alone novel, doing nothing more than reading other blogger’s and readers’ reviews of the first three novels prior to diving into Bohemian. Imagine my surprise when I started reading and found I couldn’t put this book down! I’m most certain it was the dark, dangerous draw of the magnificent vampires that wouldn’t turn me loose!

The characters, both alive and not living, in Bohemian had such life (please pardon the pun) and strength of character that I found myself, more than once, totally enamored of the story and wishing I could trade places, for just one night with the beautiful Ingrid, to be held and cherished as only Jadeon could.

The writing in this series is filled with a depth that I have only ever experienced once before in a paranormal series. I feel the influence of Laurel K. Hamilton and The Anita Blake Series of novels as I wrap myself totally in Bohemian and now, I find that I can’t wait for a spare weekend to bury myself alive in the other books of this series.

If you are a lover of paranormal writing, or a novice to the genre, I would highly recommend you buy this series and learn to love these characters as I have.

Love in Unknown Series

by Taylor M. Lunsford

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
MEDIA KIT Need You Now book 1My first three novels will be released through Naked Reader Press in 2013, along with a short story, as part of the Love In Unknown series. I’m excited to introduce readers to the small (fictional) town in Texas called Unknown. Located in the Texas Hill Country, Unknown was founded by the Maddox Family in the 1800s.
My Love In Unknown series starts off with the story of sexy mayor Caine Maddox and the new town doctor – and Caine’s college sweetheart- Melody Carr. Sparks fly between these two as Caine fights to convince Mel he’s no longer the selfish playboy he was in college while Mel struggles to convince the people of her hometown that she’s there to stay.
Next up, we meet Mel’s yummy brother Micah, the town baker and newcomer Cady Saunders, a runaway bride who steals Micah’s heart.
Finally, we get to know Caine’s brother Gage, the big bad police chief of Unknown who finds himself falling for fashion designer Tessa Styles and the cute little baggage she brings along with her.
EXCERPT:
NEED YOU NOW
By the time Caine lifted him out of the truck in front of the hospital, Teddy’s face was pasty white and drenched with sweat. Even though Caine knew from experience the poor kid had to be in a lot of pain, he was impressed at how stoic Teddy remained. No crying, no moaning. The only sound he made came when he got out of the truck.
Leading the boy into the Emergency entrance, Caine looked around for a doctor. The county hospital was small. Doctors from the four small towns in the area took turns staffing the emergency room while three full-time doctors took care of the long-term patients. Eyes lighting on a white coat, Caine started to usher Teddy forward.
“Excuse me? My friend here had a bit of an accident and I—” Caine stopped in his tracks as the doctor turned around. He hadn’t registered the long, chestnut-colored ponytail before, and the coat concealed the body he used to know better than his own. Big hazel eyes blinked up at him, looking just as surprised as he felt. Melody Carr.
Here.
Now.
Hell.
This was not how he’d pictured their reunion.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is my pleasure to interview Taylor M. Lunsford, author of Need You Now, Book One of the Love in Unknown Series. Welcome to Room With Books. First let me give you a little background on Taylor.

MEDIA KIT Taylor-9Taylor is a hopeless romantic who spends her days working for a great company and her nights/weekends doing the job of her heart. A devout follower of the Jane Austen school of thought, she’ll put her characters through a little trouble, but they’ll eventually have their happily ever after. She’s still searching for her prince charming, but she knows he’s out there, so she’ll content herself with fictional ones for now.

1.  Tell me a little about your Love In Unknown Series and what inspired you to write it? Love in Unknown is a series about three friends who need some strong women to capture their hearts. It’s set in a small town in the Texas Hill Country loosely based on where I went to college. I’ve been living with these characters so long it’s hard to pinpoint the exact inspiration. My mentor challenged me to write a romantic suspense novel and these three grew from that.

2.  When you start writing do you have the story outlined or do your characters dictate what will happen? I start with an outline, but how extensive it is varies from book to book. For books one and three of this series, I had every scene mapped out before I began. Book two (which was written first) would only reveal itself in small chunks.

3.  Have you ever had arguments with your characters and who usually wins? I often have arguments with characters although I think Gage and Tessa from the short story and book three in the series are the most vocal and argumentative characters I’ve dealt with. It’s probably because they were stuck in my head the longest. Six months of them screaming at me to be written led to a lot of arguments.

4.  What is one thing about you your readers would be surprised to know? Hmm…well, anyone who follows me on Twitter knows I’m a huge nerd. History—British history in particular—is one of my major passions. I also love superheroes and sci-fi. I especially love fairy tales (Once Upon a Time and it’s spin-off are some of my favorite shows on TV right now).

5.  If you could write with any other author who would it be any why? Write with? Eek, that’s hard. Writers are such independent creatures. We don’t necessarily play well with others. That said, I’ve always loved Eloisa James (she’s a sweetheart in person). Writing with her would be fun and a fabulous learning opportunity.

6.  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was really little I wanted to be an ice skater like Nancy Kerrigan or a trapeze artist like Holly in The Greatest Show on Earth (the worst movie to ever when an Oscar for Best Picture). Then I wanted to be a lawyer like my aunt.

7.  When did you decide to write and what prompted you to start? To write professionally? It was between my freshman and sophomore year in college. I’m not sure what clicked the switch, but I started to write would eventually become my first novel that summer.

8.  What music inspires your writing? That all depends on the book. For this series, anything country was a trigger, but especially Lady Antebellum and Gloriana. My current work-in-progress demands Maroon 5 or Josh Groban (weird, I know).

Fun Facts:

What is your favorite breakfast? I’m not big on breakfast but I love eggs benedict.

What is your favorite color? Probably blue.

What is your favorite movie? Mean question. If I have to pick, I’d say Love Actually.

What is your dream car (details please)? While I love my car now, I’d die if I could have Caine’s car from Need You Now. It’s James Bond’s car (Aston Martin DB5).

How can our readers find you?

Excerpt:

I’d been warned about this pack. Growing larger by the day, it was led by an aggressive alpha male the color of dirty water. This must be him, I thought, as the largest of the three, his head wide, fur the muddy brown of an engorged river, growled at Blue. The compactness of his body spoke of strength and survival. When he barked the saliva that shot from his mouth caught a ray of sunlight streaming through the thick foliage around us.

Muddy Water stepped forward, revving his growl like a teenager on a motorbike. The bitch in the brush flanked our left side and when I turned right, two young dogs, their ears still soft from puppyhood, glowered at me.

The owner of the guest house where I lived warned me to take a stick if I planned on running. “Just in case,” she’d said with a dip of her head and a flip of her hand. Because of her advice I carried a light but solid piece of bamboo about twice the thickness of my thumb. I tapped it on the ground in front of me as I backed toward Blue, keeping my eyes forward, focused on the alpha but paying close attention to my peripheral vision, watching the dogs to my sides.

When I reached Blue he moved backwards with me, slowly and deliberately. But the dogs started to follow with us. We stopped, and raising the stick over my head, I brought it down hard onto a rock. The loud sound and sudden movement spooked the pups to my right but the alpha male just growled louder.

The two dogs flanking Muddy Waters went crazy barking, the force of their calls lifting their front paws off the ground. The mother and the young ones joined in raising a ruckus that certainly beat mine. Blue, his front paws planted on the road, exposed his teeth and growled, his pitch wavering up and down. He wanted me to tell him it was OK to attack. I could feel his energy bundling up inside him, roiling around, soon I’d have no control.

In 1970 Judi began working for the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, working with families at risk, children in foster care and, finally, in the Court Unit where she wrote petitions to free children for adoption.  During this time she was writing articles for Glamour, The New York Times, Newsday, Cosmopolitan, Woman’s Day, Working Mother, and others and travel stories for major newspapers.

In 1986, after a trip to Paris, Judi and her husband, Tom Randall, wrote a travel story that developed into PERMANENT PARISIANS,An Illustrated Biographical Guide to the Cemeteries of Paris, published in 1987 by Chelsea Green Press.  This was followed by four more: PERMANENT NEW YORKERS; LONDONERS; CALIFORNIANS; and ITALIANS

EXCERPT:

The dead man smiled up at me.

I stared back sadly. Then I read the newspaper clipping on my worktable one more time.

llustrator, Granddaughter Drown in Family Pool

Tragedy struck an artistic dynasty in Springs yesterday morning when Nate Erikson, 67, and Morgan Marshall, 4, drowned in a swimming pool on the grounds of the family’s estate. The victims were rushed to Southampton Hospital, where efforts at resuscitation failed. A police spokesman stated that Mr. Erikson had been attempting to rescue his granddaughter, but succumbed himself.

Because I make my living selling used and rare books over the Internet, I spend a lot of time in the ancient barn behind my house, cataloging new finds and shipping them around the world. The story about Nate Erikson had lain next to my computer for the past three months. Whenever I read it I felt the same emptiness I’d had when John Updike and Robert Parker died. But my connection to Nate Erikson went back even further, to my childhood and Bible Stories for Good Children.

I was not a good child, but my Methodist parents took the title at face value, never noticing the wry twists Nate gave to the illustrations. Instead of the cliché image of Noah leading pairs of docile animals onto the ark, the patriarch was shown about to lose his temper with two recalcitrant lion cubs. Isaac was pictured after the sacrifice attempt, looking at the knife in his father’s hand with disbelief.

Care for another walk up the mountain, son?

You’re kidding, right, Dad?.

My parents suspected nothing until they found my twin sister, Patience, and me trying to raise our little brother from the dead.

“Don’t breathe,” Patience commanded. “Don’t breathe until I say, ‘Lazarus, come forth!’ ”

“Jon, I can see your stomach moving,” I accused.

Bible Stories for Good Children disappeared from the room we shared.

Learning to Live Book Blitz Banner

Synopsis

image

Being alive and living are not always the same.

Trudy Love is used to being on her own and has rarely been shown affection. Between growing up in foster care and her abusive boyfriend she has no idea what life can be. At 19 she goes through something no one should ever experience and is left alone once again. Six months later she moves to Mobile, Alabama where she meets someone whose eyes bring back memories of the one person she misses everyday. Too late she finds herself caught in a storm of emotions that are unwanted, but she’s determined to fight them off.

Jaxon Coleman has a good life, and for him to attend one of the finest Med schools in the country and follow in his dad’s foot steps is a dream come true. However, dreams can change in life and when he meets Trudy he knows his will never be the same. Jax knows she has secrets she is unwilling to share, but he’s never given up on something he wants and he wants Tru.

Can Trudy stop resisting her feelings and welcome the chance to live a different life than she pictured or will her defiance and haunted past eventually take her out of Jax’s reach?

After tragedy living is not easy, but with the right person it can be learned.

Exclusive

I finally pull my gaze away and remember that I never thanked him for what he did. Geez, he must think I am a real bitch. “Um…” I hesitate. “About what you did today…I never said thank you.” I pause and glance back up in his dark coffee colored eyes. “Thank you,” I say in a whisper.

“You’re welcome,” he whispers back, and I feel like I’m drowning in the deep brown pools.

All the noise and chaos around me is forgotten as we have another moment like the one from earlier. I feel the flutter in my stomach return and my breathing begins to alter. What is going on?

“Here you go, Tru.” A red cup is pushed into my hands, and I grab hold right before it spills and I make a complete fool out of myself. After taking a small sip, I remember why I don’t drink beer. My face twists into a grimace, and Jaxon gives me a cocky grin. There’s no reason to complain because I like his smile. Relief washes over me since I don’t need to feel guilty for liking it either.

Meet the Author

author imageMy name is Robin and I live in Alabama. I grew up an army brat and traveled a lot until we finally settled down along the Gulf Coast when I was 4. My husband is 9 years younger so I guess that makes me a COUGAR. I have a little girl who is 9 and is blind as well as autistic. My life is not boring with them two in it. Believe me.

I have always loved creating and I would constantly draw on my walls. I love painting and reading. Writing is something I wanted to do but didn’t think I could, until I woke up at three a.m. a few months back and started writing. Life has a way of throwing rocks at you and putting cracks in your soul. Either you can duck and cover or you can make something beautiful from the cracks.

After that, the story took over. Even though some pieces of my life experience are within it, it is Tru and Jax’s story now. I truly fell in love with this story and hope you all do too.

ditz_spln72

UNLEASHED (A Sydney Rye Novel, #1)

When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller’s dog-walking business on Manhattan’s exclusive upper east side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.

But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim–and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.

When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit–cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan’s elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

DEATH IN THE DARK (A Sydney Rye Novella, #2)

At the beginning of Death in the Dark we find Joy Humbolt hiding, not only from the law, but also from her past and the mistakes she’s made. Living this isolated life doesn’t last long though when a visit from Mulberry brings Joy to accept her new identity as the Private Detective, Sydney Rye. To complete the transformation, Joy must learn to control her emotions as well as her giant aggressive dog, Blue. With the help of an expert trainer, Joy learns to fight with her mind as well as her body. However, when the daughter of a close friend is brutally murdered in the desert, Rye turns away from her mentor to seek revenge. Sydney’s quick temper and deadly intentions lead her into a trap that she will need all of her new skills to survive.

INSATIABLE (A Sydney Rye Novel, #3)

The third book in the series begins with private detective Sydney Rye living a simple, disciplined life in London, but when a dangerous man from her past calls, Rye finds she cannot turn him away. Robert Maxim explains that the daughter of a powerful friend has gone missing and he wants Rye to find her. In exchange he offers her something she had given up hope of ever having; freedom from her past.

With her dog, Blue, at her side, Rye meets up with her new partner, a handsome man she’s not sure she can trust. Heading for Mexico City, they go undercover, posing as husband and wife. After meeting with the bereaved parents, Rye starts to sense that there is more going on than just a missing girl. But it isn’t until they arrive in the Yucatan Peninsula, hot on the girl’s trail in Paradise, that all hell breaks loose. Sydney has to reach out for help from old friends and deal with the consequences of her past, if she’s going to find the girl and keep them all alive.

New release!  STRINGS OF GLASS (A Sydney Rye Novel, #4)

STRINGS OF GLASS is the fourth novel in Emily Kimelman’s Sydney Rye Series of dark murder mystery novels. This series features a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don’t mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!

From UNLEASHED (A Sydney Rye Novel, #1)

EXCERPT:

The sun was slipping behind the brownstones across the street and turning the sky pink when I left for Nancy’s. “Hey,” said the guy on the corner who always said hey. I ignored him. “Hey, pretty lady, you got a beautiful ass,” he tried again. I watched the concrete and power-walked away.

Ten minutes later I was at Nancy’s, a low-key lesbian bar with a nice backyard. If you wanted to talk to a stranger you could, but there was no pressure. If you wanted to take someone home you could, but again there was no pressure.

“Tequila gimlet, straight up,” I said. The bartender, whose name I was pretty sure was Diane, nodded and moved off to make my drink. My face, reflected in the mirror behind the bar, peered from between a bottle of Blue Curacao and Midori. I needed a haircut. My fashionable bangs had grown out, and now I just pushed them behind my ears. Last night’s fight with Marcus and my early-morning journey to the pound had left puffy, blue-tinted circles under my eyes. All those tears had left the white around my gray irises streaked with red and—I leaned forward a little to make sure—my upper eyelids a bizarre orange.

Diane placed a martini glass brimming with sheer red liquid on the bar, and I handed her a ten. I moved toward the backyard, trying not to spill my drink all over my hand while spilling my drink all over my hand.

From DEATH IN THE DARK (A Sydney Rye Novel, #2)

EXCERPT:

After leaving the city I drove parallel to the ocean in what looked like a desert. That’s the thing about Puerto Penasco, it’s ocean front but you’d never know it unless you were looking right at the sea. The sand stretches back to the U.S border and beyond. I could see how a person wandering in those never-ending dunes could stumble onto the shores of the Sea of Cortez and think it was a mirage. The sparkling turquoise water does not belong in the middle of a land so parched.

The sign for my oyster farm was hand painted and featured a topless mermaid pointing with a mollusk down a sand road into the dunes. The next sign was for condos named Sparkles. There was something about the oyster farm’s sign that was utterly appealing when compared to Sparkles’ grand dream of a tall building with Jacuzzi tubs and granite countertops. All the ostiones farm was offering was oysters and topless mermaids. And if you don’t like those two things than we are probably not going to get along.

I turned down the road and hit the gas to keep the Javelina from sinking. Soon the paved road was gone from my mirrors. All I saw was the beige sand rising and falling where the wind last left it. I didn’t see the small piece of wood with the word ‘Ostiones’ and an arrow painted on it until I was almost past it. It was a tight turn and I had to back up a dune to make it. I hit her into reverse and sped up the side of the sand mound and then knocked it quickly into drive. I could feel the back wheels sinking and I saw sand spitting up behind me as we rolled down the dune and onto the path leading to oysters.

Thunder clapped and my lips trembled at the intense sound. My lips give me away. I’ve learned to lie with my eyes: to smile with them when I feel disgust; to make them sparkle when I feel dread. My lips though, they curl at those I distrust and sneer at those who repulse me. They cling to an older version of me. They still think they belong to Joy Humbolt.

The rest of me is entirely Sydney Rye. Sydney’s arms are strengthened from endless hours of pushups and tricep presses, her stomach is hard from crunches and side bends. And my legs, I use my legs to run. I don’t know who Sydney Rye would be if she didn’t run.

I tested the water in the tub, and finding it almost unbearably hot, eased into it. Water lapped at my clavicles. I let my eyelids close til my lashes kissed.

They started as a buzzing, like the sound of bugs against a window screen at night. The noise grew louder and I could make out individual words in the din. Joy, joy, joy, joy, joy, joy it seemed to be twerping.

I sat up with a start in the cold bath. Water sloshed over the edge and I looked around wildly for a moment trying to recollect where I was. The honey and cream colored marble, the gold faucet, and my toenails painted sweet salmon pink. Mexico City, pretending to be Sydney Rye, pretending to be Melanie Franks.

From STRINGS OF GLASS (A Sydney Rye Novel, #4)

Excerpt:

At the end of the grove of trees the beach opened up. Inland was a garbage- strewn parking lot used during the day by beach-goers. The sounds were coming from there. I peeked around a tree and saw a van and several scooters. The headlights of the van backlit a group of maybe 6 or 7 guys. A figure broke free and stumbled toward the sea.

The men laughed and one ran after her. Hidden in the trees I held my breath. Their laughter reached me sounding like the cackles of a pack of hyenas feasting on carrion.

The woman struggled through the sand, her body jerking violently as she ran desperately away. Long black hair flowed out behind her, a thigh-length kurta hung in tatters off her shoulders, one breast exposed, swinging in the moonlight. When the man, young, slight and gangly, caught her she fell forward onto her hands and knees. He kicked her and as she flew onto her back I saw her bare ass.

I licked my lips. Glancing up again at the group that laughed and cheered, I pulled my lead pipe out of the folds of my jacket. I had surprise on my side but I had a feeling those jackasses would be on me quick. She was a fighter, though. The woman was pushing herself through the sand away from the man as he unbuttoned his pants. I waited until he grabbed her and was down on his knees, trying to control the woman who was sobbing and fighting him off with all her strength before sprinting out onto the beach.
