GENRE: Inspirational Romance (Amish)

About the Book

Housed in a rustic red barn, the Simple Gifts crafts shop celebrates the talents of the Amish of Willow Ridge—and the faith that inspires them. For the acceptance of simplicity opens the path to love.

As far as Edith Riehl is concerned, the baby twins thrust suddenly into her arms are a heaven-sent gift. Unable to conceive, she longs to be a mother with a home of her own. She’s going to abide by her promise to handsome Asa Detweiler to take care of them while he looks for their real father. And even if her domineering dat Cornelius refuses to countenance Asa’s suit, she can only pray the bachelor’s honesty and persistence will uncover the truth—even as he’s kindled an impossible hope for a love of her own…

Asa can’t understand why anyone would think he would be so dishonorable as to father babies and then abandon them. He’s determined to clear his name—but Edith’s caring ways also inspire him to help heal her wounded spirit and earn her trust. In the face of heartbreaking deception, he and Edith must find the strength to understand, forgive…and claim their own hearts’ joy.

Turning quickly to hide her tears, Edith swayed faster as she clasped the twins to her shoulders. Dat made a valid point, but his harshness made her heart shrivel in sympathy for the twins. Her head was starting to pound with their strident cries. She could barely think, much less refute her father’s claims.

“I know how you always side with the underdog—how your heart opens wide any time you’re around little children,” Dat murmured as he approached her. “But I’m watching out for your best interests, Daughter. You entered into this agreement without considering the long-term consequences. What man will marry you if you’re saddled with twins who aren’t even yours? You’ll be stuck at home forever, doomed to be a maidel—a single mother—while all your friends find happy lives with suitable husbands.”

Who would marry me anyway? Edith thought sorrowfully. I’d be a liar if I didn’t tell a potential husband that I’m unable to bear his children . . . because Dat didn’t take me to the doctor soon enough. If only my appendix hadn’t burst. If only the infection hadn’t attacked my female organs . . .

Edith bit her lip against a sob. It wasn’t right to dredge up her past resentment—not after she’d forgiven her father years ago, at Mamm’s insistence. Dat was standing close enough behind her that she could feel the disapproval radiating from his body as he awaited her compliance. She dared not mention the vow she’d made to that strikingly handsome stranger.

Promise me that you’ll mother these kids—and that you’ll hear me out when I return, all right? His voice still echoed in her mind, mysterious and compelling.

Asa Detweiler had no idea how desperately she longed to be a mother—how she’d agreed to care for these twins to satisfy her own selfish desires. She’d believed him to be sincere and compassionate, but she dared not mention that to her father, either. Cornelius Riehl had lost a large part of his heart and soul when Mamm passed away, but that didn’t mean he’d lowered his expectations for his three daughters. If anything, he held them to higher standards now that Mamm wasn’t around to buffer his gruffness, his moods.

“So, when do you wanna meet up next Saturday?” Charlie asks, breaking into my thoughts.

I stare at him blankly. “Next Saturday?”

“My show?” Charlie looks at me with a mix of confusion and hurt.

Of course—Charlie’s photography show! It’s only the biggest thing that’s ever happened to him. Charlie takes these amazing photographs of the insides of vacant buildings. He’s already gotten into one of the best art schools in the country, starting this fall. In New York.

I turn to him, suddenly noticing how the air is packed tight with the smell of eucalyptus. “Starts at six?” I ask quickly, hoping he didn’t notice that I’d forgotten.

Charlie nods. He’s chewing on his bottom lip, something he does only when he’s extremely nervous, and I know that he needs me there. “Can you meet me at two at our favorite noodle place?” he asks. “And then we can hang the photos for the show.”

“Two o’clock sharp,” I promise.

A look of relief spreads over his face. “Thanks, Cal. Because the other photographer backed out at the last minute, so it’s just me. My first solo show.”

“Congratulations,” I exclaim, tears popping into my eyes. I blink them back and look up at the trees raising their thick trunks into the sky, their thick waxy leaves tinted buttery yellow by the sunset. Be happy for Charlie, I tell myself, but he’s moving on is what I hear instead.

“There are sunsets in New York,” Charlie reminds me. “You could get a nannying job there. Or take some college classes.”

“I’m going to San Francisco State, remember?”

“But you could—”

“No. It would break Mom’s heart,” I respond.

“But your mom’s got Richard now. It’s not like she’s dating some jerk academic, or wasting away at home, waiting for the man who will never return,” Charlie says.

GENRE: Crime fiction, psychological thriller

About the Book

Frederick Starks has it all—a gorgeous wife who was his high school sweetheart, three beautiful children, a mansion and cars others envy, millions in the bank, respected in his community, admired by his employees, loved and respected by loyal friends. He revels in the hard-earned power and control he’s acquired. As the saying goes, “All that glitters is not gold,” which Starks discovers when gut-wrenching betrayal by his wife sends him over the edge and into a maximum security prison. There, Starks is a new “fish,” stripped of nearly everything he’s always relied on. In that place, where inmates and guards have their own rules and codes of conduct, Starks is forced to face the darker side of life, and his own darker side, especially when the betrayals, both inside and outside the prison, don’t stop. He must choose which path to follow when the line between right and wrong becomes blurred: one that leads to getting out of the physical and emotional hellhole he finds himself in or one that keeps him alive.

Exclusive Excerpt

Starks stared at his hands. He looked up when he heard Spencer confer in whispers with the other men at the table.

“You leave us no choice, since you admit to starting the assault. Thirty days in the SHU might make a difference. I hope for your sake it does.” Spencer explained in response to Starks’s puzzled expression, “Secure Housing Unit. Not a place you’ll care to return to, I promise you.”

The same two guards escorted Starks down more corridors than he could follow, to a windowless six by eight cell constructed out of concrete. The bed was a concrete slab with no mattress and no pillow, just a thin, scratchy blanket with holes and stains he didn’t want to think about. At least, he thought, the toilet and washbasin will stay clean.

One guard stood watch with his charged taser in his hand. The other guard shoved Starks forward, chuckling when he tripped on the restraints around his ankles.

“Get on in there, asshole. It’s not like we got all day.” He laughed. “Oops. I forgot—you do got all day. Every day for a month!”

The guard was rough as he started to remove the restraints which had abraded skin on Starks’s wrists and ankles.

Starks squinted up at the single blinking fluorescent light buzzing overhead. “Ballast needs to be changed.”

The first guard yanked hard on the chain. “Showing off, prick?”

“You’re going to fix it, right?” Starks asked.

“You may’ve been a big-time mucky-muck out there,” the other guard said, “but you’re nothing in here. Here’s what you can count on, puke. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner shoved through that slot in that door. Maybe your food’ll even stay on the tray.” The other guard snickered. “One hour a day you’ll be taken out to walk around. We might even let you shower so you don’t stink up the place any more than you do now. The rest of the time, you can stare at the fucking walls, for all we care.”

“What about the light?”

“Pretend you’re in a fancy nightclub.”

“What about my stuff?”

“Maybe some of it’ll be waiting for you. Maybe not.”

Just before the door slammed shut, Starks yelled, “There’s no toilet paper.”

His only response was a nightstick rapped against the opposite side of the door.

The cold wind blew as I crossed my arms to block out the chill. I took the long way to the mall, hoping that I could bore J0 somehow if she was actually monitoring my movements. After about an hour of being lost in my daydreams, I found myself in the mall parking lot.

I couldn’t believe that it still looked almost exactly the same as it did in 1981. Well, almost anyway. This version of the mall had a parking lot bustling with futuristic flying cars and trucks. Every vehicle levitated around the rows of parked vehicles. I laughed to myself as I thought about how there was no such thing as parallel parking anymore. It was all so surreal.

Julie and I had taken a trip to this very mall the day before I woke up here in 2095. We had spent the day shopping and just holding hands. It seemed that all the grime from Susan’s death fell away that day, for just a couple of hours. However, Julie eventually became distant and nasty toward me, like so many other days had recently ended. We wound up screaming at each other right in front of Jordan Marsh. She demanded the keys to the Thunderbird. She sat in the car and waited for me while I sat in the food pavilion and sulked over what had become of our marriage. I supposed I should have at least been grateful that she didn’t take off and leave me stranded.

Days just seemed to slowly line up outside the door, waiting to consume me. I then realized that maybe I had always been living in a lonely world. Maybe I didn’t even know it until I came here to 2095.

Then I noticed it wasn’t called Isabella Creek Mall anymore. It had been renamed to Kuiama’s Shopping Center. Its new name was brightly displayed in neon lights. The sign seemed to keep watch over the glass mouth-shaped portal that welcomed shoppers and mallrats to enter its brick-and-mortar belly.

I took a deep breath and entered the shopping monstrosity through its main entrance. The outside may have looked like it did over a hundred years ago, but the inside was very different. Everything was so slick and shiny, and appeared almost aerodynamic. I smiled when I saw the architecture. At least the malls of the future looked just like I had always imagined them.

I noticed stores that I had never even heard of, most of them selling merchandise that I was ignorant of as well. While I wanted to see my old home, I couldn’t help but keep wandering the mall first. As I was about to pass by a flower shop on the second floor, I found myself drawn in by a large display of Gerbera daisies. I stopped and looked at the sign over the flower shop’s door.

April Showers. What a clever name.

The force of the water battered Kevin around like a toy but the ropes kept him on course. The anchormen on shore tightened and gave more slack in the lines as needed to direct Kevin to his precious targets. Stumbling repeatedly, the slippery rocky bottom hampered his progress and he went under again and again. The dunkings slowed him and Kevin cursed out loud, trying to regain his balance. Time was his enemy since he was already numb from the icy water. He had to get them out. An eternity passed before he finally made it to the pair.

Tommy was out of the water, lying motionless on his belly on the rock as Jamie held on to the life jacket.

“Jamie, are you okay?” he had to shout. She looked pale but nodded.

“Take Tommy!” she yelled back to him.
“I’ll take both of you together!”
Jamie shook her head. “No, the water’s too strong. Take

Tommy first.”

Kevin knew she was right, but she didn’t look good. He feared she couldn’t hold on but he also knew he did not have time to hesitate if he wanted to save both of them.

“Tommy!” Kevin shouted to be heard above the water. “Tommy, it’s Uncle Kevin. I want you to move slowly but I want you to come into my arms, like you’re giving me a big hug. I’m going to take you back to your dad. He’s worried about you.”

At the mention of his dad, Tommy’s head perked up. He began to move and reached for Kevin who grabbed him in a bear hug. Turning to look at Jamie, he yelled, “I’ll be back for you. Don’t you let go! Do you hear me? Don’t let go!” he repeated.

“Okay.” She nodded but she did not convince him. “Promise?”
“Promise,” she answered with a weak smile. He did not

want to leave but he had no choice, he turned to go. She was right. He couldn’t have held on to both of them in this rough water. Tommy hugged Kevin as he tried to soothe him with words of encouragement.

“It’s okay, buddy, I’ve got you. You’re gonna be okay. Your dad’s waiting for you. You’re gonna be okay.” As Kevin began to walk back, he could feel the sheer power of his friends pulling on the ropes, leading him back to safety. He could not have made it back on his own. His strength was drained from the glacial waters.

As he neared safe water, Rick handed off his rope to another man and ran into the water toward his son. He embraced Kevin and Tommy, then lifted Tommy out of Kevin’s arms and hugged his son like he would never let go. But Rick did let go and handed his son to Mike on shore. “Go warm him up,” he ordered. “We need to get Jamie!”

Father continued, “They received a distress call from another ship. Their thrusters had blown. Shiray made the decision to aid them with only four members of her team. And she didn’t notify anyone.”

“Bryan, I’m sorry. I didn’t know anything about it before it was too late. I was taking care of things in Giza,” Nile blurted out.

“Why isn’t anyone looking for her?”

“We just came from searching,” Nile said.

“We were out since daybreak,” I added.

Nile continued, “We also looked until it got dark last night. Her cousin, Symone, is missing, too. We think they may be together.”

Bryan ran his hand through his chestnut hair. “But you can’t be sure. How long has she been missing?”

“Eighteen hours,” I whispered. Bryan’s jaw muscles flexed. Then he began to tremble. I glanced at his hands and blue flames arose from them. They grew several feet high. What the fudge! Bryan’s fire was normally shades of yellow and orange.

“Holy shit!” Nile shrieked.

The blue flames formed a shimmering sphere. Then they ricocheted at hyper-drive speed across the room and crashed into the fireplace. Kadeem was in the sphere’s direct line of fire, he teleported. There was a thunderous bang as debris flew everywhere. Everyone scattered. I dove to the floor. Cessar and Juda, who were closest to the fireplace, dashed out of the explosion’s path. Nile bolted from the room and was now peeking from the hall. The wall where the flames hit had an enormous ragged hole. You could see into the other room and the edges of the hole were burning azure. The wall was also singed and shards of debris were diffused all over the room. My heart beat rapidly as I gaped at my older brother from behind the couch. His eyes were wild as he examined his hands, twisting them from side to side. He appeared as shocked as I felt.

“Bryan, calm down!” Father demanded.

The others got up from the ground but kept their distance. Kadeem teleported back into the room. Everyone’s eyes were huge. I stood up and took a deep breath. I knew Bryan wouldn’t hurt us intentionally. But I didn’t know how much control he had over this new enhancement of his power. Bryan immediately put his hands down. “I’m sorry guys. Is anyone hurt?” We all shook our heads no.

“Bryan, have you ever done that before?” the king asked.

“No, I haven’t. I lost my temper, but I didn’t mean for that to happen. And I don’t know how it did.”

“It’s okay, Bryan,” I told him.

“I apologize for my actions and I’m relieved no one was injured. But we’re wasting time. I’m going to find my wife. Anyone who wants to help, meet me in the basement in fifteen minutes,” he said, and spun from the room.

Nile came back in. “I think that went rather well.”

I smacked my lips and rolled my eyes. Always a smart ass. “Yeah, Nile, it could have been worse,” I countered.

“You’re right, someone could have gotten hurt.” He did have a point. Thank goodness no one did. “I’m going to round up my team and whoever else wants to help.”

“I will get some of my entourage together,” August said.

“I’ll also gather my team,” John stated. They left and I turned to Kadeem.

“My brother has to be going through hell. Obviously his emotions are so out of whack, they screwed with his powers.”

“I know how he feels. I didn’t know for months if you were dead or alive. I wouldn’t wish that feeling on my worst enemy.”

I’d also gone through that torture, but tried my best not to think about it. Kadeem pulled me into his embrace. “Come on. Let’s go and find your sister.”

“Is Fred’s way… live to close too nuclear plant.  What Bob going to do?” he said, holding up both hands in defeat.

I had no idea what to say to that.

Bob, following Fred’s lead, pulled a black ski mask over his face, before handing me a baseball cap.

“What’s this?” I asked totally expecting a ski mask, turning the cap over in my hands.

“Beginner’s hat.  Maybe, next time, for you,” he smirked.

I’d been ribbed before, and I can take it almost as good as I can give it but this… from Bob?  Damn aggravating.

I tripped along in the dark, getting my feet tangled on every stick, every root, every obstacle that stuck up out of the ground as I trailed behind him.

He, unlike Fred, seemed to be more than comfortable in the woods as well as the dark.  Fred walked slightly ahead, darting from tree to tree as if hiding himself from some unseen observer.

Bob and I simply stood in place, waiting for him to wave us on as he dashed to the next tree or rock outcropping.

After what seemed like forever and more scratches and bruises than I had acquired in a lifetime, we found the house.

Fred, his back pressed against a sizable rock as if he were keeping it in place, held his position a dozen yards ahead of us.  He waved frantically, signaling for us to get down and we obeyed.

A moment later headlights swept over where we had stood.  The sound of tires grinding through the dirt filled the air.

About the Author

I was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends I could conjure. Not that I wasn’t friendly, I just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe I lived in my head way more than I should have, maybe not. I liked machines more than people, at least I did until I met my wife.

The first thing I can remember writing was for her. For the life of me I can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married me shortly after that. I spent a good number of years after inventing games and prototypes for a variety of ideas before I got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. My wife and I had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

I was thrilled. If there is one thing I enjoy it’s making people believe me and I like to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mine you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not.  When I write, I always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, I guarantee you, nothing, makes me happier.

Franklin had worked all night in lab stasis. He had meticulously separated and adapted the quantity of dry mist he had gathered back on the ridge weeks earlier, which now rested in a vial in the fiber alloy case. He lowered the lid.

Marnie’s innocent comment had triggered the memory, and a potential solution to the strangely afflicted lightspheres had slipped neatly into place. He could scarcely believe he had missed it.

He had also stored the CTT vaccine in their compartment in the lab, ready for subdermal injection if the need arose. He was tired, but set off for the bridge to watch the dawn. He was surprised how relieved he felt to be out from under the sheet.

He was mildly shocked by what he saw in the bridge holofield. Grey Lady was making her way, on the surface still, up a narrow isthmus towards a complex of low buildings on a ridge.

“Where are we?”

Thomas glanced at him. “It’s listed on the maps as some sort of military base.”

“A Kalaal base, must be,” Franklin said.

“It’s only about ten miles to the north pole from here. Is that close enough?”

“Close enough?”

“To deploy your satellite.” Thomas looked up. “Are you okay, professor?”

“The satellite, of course,” Franklin laughed softly. “Yes, I’m feeling better than I have in weeks.”

Thomas was quietly amazed that their oldest crewmember had brought them so far, had accomplished so much.

“Where will you dock?” Franklin asked.

“There’s a submersible entrance nearby. I was just about to dive, in fact.”

“Don’t let me distract you. The others?”

“Down in the forward hatch ready room.”

“Thomas, any idea where on Polarica this other base might be?”

Thomas nodded. “We talked about that last night.” He tapped the screen that filled much of the surface of his station. “There’s another base, much larger, on the far side of Polarica. We figure he’s set up shop there.”

“Good. I didn’t really plan ahead on this,” Franklin said with a smile. “Levrok completely slipped my mind.”

“He thinks he destroyed us – back in Oceangate.”

About the Author

MediaKit_AuthorPhoto_NewSiqdorStephen J. Carter is a Canadian writer living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He completed a PhD in Social and Political Thought at York University in Toronto in 1997. This led to an 8-year period of teaching at universities in South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. In 2006 he settled in northern Thailand, and began writing fiction full-time in 2007.

In his early years he made several short-term forays into film and video production while involved full-time in academia. Along the way he tried his hand at writing non-fiction in and out of academia, and 8 years ago finally committed full-time to writing fiction.

For Stephen there is something about this northern Thai city that makes it a perfect place to write. His preferred genres to date have been horror and science fiction. On the one hand, he sets his horror novels in Thailand because Thais have such vivid customs that touch the supernatural. On the other hand, disheartened by the cultural Marxism that dominates social discourse now in the West, he feels drawn to writing science fiction for the rational optimism over possible futures it affords. Approaching SF formerly as pure escapism, he finds in it now a source of hope and forward thinking that can be very inspiring.

Stephen looks forward to writing several more novels in his two current series, Zero Point Light and Z Inferno.

In the two weeks he’d prepped to go undercover as a tournament poker player at the Hendrix, Ryan had studied the case file more thoroughly than he’d ever studied anything in college. This was his chance to prove he was really back. That he wasn’t just the screw-up who’d gotten Jack shot.

More importantly, it was his chance to take another crack at Vic Morelli. There’d been enough stolen property in the warehouse to send Vic upriver for five to thirty—depending on the judge—but the Feds were still working to build racketeering and corruption charges. Ryan wasn’t about to let that stand. He wanted the mobster in jail for life or—better—parked on death row for conspiracy to commit murder.

Forget the drug dens in Manhattan or the warehouse in the Bronx; he was going to hit the man where it hurt.

His wallet.

Edgar Blethins was Vic’s best friend and personal accountant. The FBI had frozen all of the accounts he managed, but there was still a chunk of money unaccounted for.

Ten million, seven hundred and twenty-six thousand dollars to be exact.

Almost eleven million dollars hadn’t just gotten up and walked away. So when Blethins signed up for the Hendrix’s inaugural poker tournament in Las Vegas, it only made sense to send an agent in undercover to keep an eye out for him.

Ryan had demanded to be put on the case. He’d fucking begged, and when he’d finally gotten the go-ahead for the assignment? He’d started doing his homework.

He knew every employee, every longtime guest, and every big winner currently checked into the hotel. He for damn sure knew every player registered to play in the tournament, but he didn’t know “Adams, Daisy Adams” from Eve.

The woman had to be a last minute entry.

But how? And why?

In the world of professional gambling, the women who played were tough, domineering, and sexy as hell. Men wore TT-shirts, shorts, and lucky charms, anything to stay comfortable. Women wore low-cut shirts and too much makeup, working their own special charm to gain the slightest advantage.

Daisy Adams wasn’t sexy. She was cute.

Wearing a pair of cotton-candy pajamas with fluffy white sheep embroidered on them, she was adorable. The pajamas were a size too big, hanging loose on her already petite frame, but they didn’t completely hide her curved hips and firm, high breasts. Her hair was inky black, loose waves flowing around her heart-shaped face like a dark and twisted halo. Her features were delicate, like the rest of her. Her eyes were royal blue, so deep they were almost purple.

“Is there any other reason I’d be in Las Vegas?” she snapped, answering his earlier question. Her tone was harsh, coming from soft pink lips that curved generously on top and were full on the bottom. At five in the morning, she probably wasn’t wearing any makeup, so the apple red color of her cheeks had to be all natural. Fresh from bed, she smelled like the orange trees his grandparents kept in their dining room in Coney Island in winter, then dragged outside for the summer months.

Fresh faced and innocent, what the hell was she doing in the casino?

“You play poker?” Ryan asked, just in case he was missing something.

“Sure, want some pointers?”

Cute wasn’t his type. He liked leggy law-enforcement professionals who knew the score—he’d been engaged to three of them—but Daisy had spunk.

Ryan liked spunk.

It kept things interesting.

He wondered if the blush that was coloring her skin went all the way down, underneath those absurd pajamas. The way she was glaring at him, she’d probably cut his throat if he tried to find out, but it might be worth it. His gaze moved back to those warm, full, lips. It would definitely be worth it.

“I’m always up for improving my technique.” He ran his fingers through his hair, wishing he’d had time to brush it before he opened the door. “Give me a second to throw on a shirt, and I’ll take you out to breakfast.”

“What?” Daisy’s hands went to her hips—all spunky and defiant—and those threadbare pajamas pulled tight against her petite curves.

Ryan lost the ability to think.

Damn. Daisy might be small, but she was very well proportioned, with luscious breasts and full hips. What was she wearing under those things anyway? A gentleman would step back and close the door, but—fuck it—he definitely wasn’t a gentleman.

He moved closer for a better view.

Reid's Deliverance 4

Exclusive Excerpt

Laughter came from the stage.

The members of the band were breaking down their equipment and talking with fans. A group of women surrounded the keyboardist. One of them wore a tiara and a “Finally 21!” sash over a form-fitting, pink minidress. He draped an arm around her and posed for pictures. The redhead practically swooned. Who could blame her? Six years ago, at that age, she would have done the same. His wide shoulders were made for holding onto, and the way he filled out those jeans screamed hot body. Not to mention that orgasm-inducing grin. He turned up the wattage on said grin and chatted with his admirers. At least a ten-year age difference existed between him and the birthday girl. The way he flirted with her and her friends, maybe he preferred to date younger.

His eyes locked on Lauren. Even from a distance, she could see his gaze roaming over her from head to toe and back up again. He smiled and her short, white dress grew as warm as a parka. Caught staring, could she look more pathetic?

Steps from the exit, a drunken guy staggered into her path. An abrupt halt left her teetering in her stilettos. A strong, masculine arm wrapped around her waist. Lauren’s heart jumped.

“Careful.” His breath ruffled the hair near her cheek. “I’ve got you.”

People squeezed by to get to the door. She didn’t budge. The keyboardist’s clean, woodsy scent surrounded her as she leaned against hard chest muscle.

“Time to move. We’re about to get trampled.” He rested his hand on her back. Confidence and his long stride sliced through the crowd. They walked out and moved to the side of the door.

Too much space allowed cool night air to steal his warmth. Exhaust fumes from departing cars snatched away his appealing scent.

More people piled out of the club.

He turned his back to the door. Lights near the awning illuminated the clean-shaven lines of his face. “I’m Reid, by the way.”

Intense hazel eyes robbed her of speech. Her, lost for words? That never happened. “I’m Lauren.”

“Nice to meet you, Lauren. So, are you coming to the after-party?”

Across the parking lot, Ari begged and stamped her feet. Inches shorter than Celine, she resembled a child throwing a tantrum.

“My friend Celine is tired. She wants to go home.”

Reid stepped into her space. Close enough for warmth and deliciousness to return and kick up her heart rate. “What do you want?”

To stay out of trouble.

After three failed relationships in five months, she was taking a break from men, dating, the whole shebang. “It isn’t about what I want.”

“It should be.”

“When we’re out together, if one of us doesn’t want to do something, we all take a pass.”

He flattened her hand to his chest. “You’re breaking my heart. I can’t believe fate brought you to me tonight just to take you away.”
