About the Book

Jonah doesn’t want to run–he has to. There’s only so much pain one man can cause before he needs to start over. Unstuck from his tainted past, he craves the anonymity he can only achieve by vanishing like a specter in the night.

Before his new life is even underway, a chance encounter leaves him in possession of a curious object–something the mysterious Keepers of The Oracle will kill to obtain, but there’s more to the Keepers than Jonah could possibly imagine. They have the ability to do much worse than kill, and now he’s in their sights.

The Keepers wield power unlike anything Jonah has ever seen, and they’re closing in fast. He’s placed a new group of innocents in danger this time, and he can’t run away again.

The pain came on slowly, but everywhere at once. Kat’s skin tingled and burned, waves of it passing over her. She fought against the panic as flashes of light clouded her vision. Kat’s senses told her with certainty it was fire that crept across her body. She could feel the cruel flames washing over her, kissing her pale skin with burning lips. Gordon was right, the fire consumed her.

Then the heat dissipated and her skin was taken over by a stiff, harsh chill—like the pain of an ice cube pressed to the skin until it sticks. She felt it over every inch of her. It wasn’t just cold, a numbness permeated her being, reaching to her core. It separated her from everything she knew. Kat writhed and pulled at the bonds as the numbness spread.

Kat’s vision shimmered and blurred, getting progressively darker with each blink. She had the vague sense of her limbs moving, but they did so without her consent. She could no longer make out the shape of Gordon standing in front of her. He was merely a dark, unimportant blob in a field of slightly lighter blobs.  Everything faded from gray to black, then to the color of nothingness. The pain faded along with everything else, and she was at least thankful for that.

It was very dark in the place Kat went next, save for a point of light far in the distance. She looked up and struggled forward, straining against unseen forces that threatened to drag her down. It felt like she was swimming through molasses. A powerful, unyielding presence swept around her, wrapping her in its embrace. She was not alone, not even in her mind. The sickening apparition was everywhere, forcing into the Dark.

She stood in the emptiness for a very long time. At least it felt that way. The hazy indistinctness of the place made it hard to tell. Interminable millennia ticked by as she waited in the Dark for something of note to happen.

Finally, when opportunity failed to present itself, she sat down. Rather, she imagined sitting down. Kat had no legs to fold under her, and no hands to place calmly in her lap. She had no corporeal form at all. All that remained of Kat was a wispy sense of self, stuffed down in the darkest corner of the brain’s microcosm.

Just when he was about to rip the damn door off the hinges, it swung open. “Took you long enough.” Not an ounce of amusement resonated in his voice.

Alessandra stared at him for a beat, her face registering disbelief and bewilderment. “I was in the shower.”

Hudson stood framed in the doorway. Right now he wasn’t feeling like the billionaire mogul the rest of the world knew, but a man past the limits of control. His eyes raked over her from head to toe and she pulled the lapels of her robe tighter against his searing gaze. “Why did you come to my place?” he demanded.

Her spine straightened. “Shouldn’t you be out with a leggy brunette about now?”

“Canceled. Now answer the question.”

“I . . .” She hesitated.

“Tell me.”

“I don’t know.” Her grip tightened on the silk robe, wrinkling the fabric.

“Bullshit. You do know. You can’t stop thinking about me.” He jutted forward, bracing one hand on the doorjamb. “I know this because I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“Every time I close my eyes I see you, feel your mouth sliding against mine, and it drives me f*cking crazy—”

She held up her hand. “Hudson, please stop.”

“Then you show up at my penthouse. And now, knowing you’re naked underneath that robe . . .”

“You can’t keep saying these things to me.”

“You don’t mean that. In fact,” his eyes flicked down briefly to her nipples straining against the thin fabric, begging for his attention, “I think it turns you on.”

“You’ve got a lot of nerve.”

“Do I? I bet if I rip open that robe and feel between your legs, you’re soaking wet.” His gaze darkened and his voice lowered to an intimate challenge. “Want me to prove it?”

Her jaw dropped. “You need to leave.”

When she made a move to close the door, Hudson’s palm smacked flat against the wood. “Not until you admit I’m right.”

“Is that what this is about, you being right?”

“No, though I am.” His voice took on a decisive edge. “The road is paved in hard truths, Alessandra, not denials.”

“And you think I’m the one in denial?”

His gaze was rock steady. “I know you are. But f*ck if I’ll let you push me away again.”

“It doesn’t matter how I feel.” Her voice thinned. “It’s too late for us, Hudson.”

“The hell it is.” His chest expanded and he blew out an exasperated breath. He needed to connect with the girl she used to be, the girl he knew was still there, beneath the layers of socialite status. “Damnit, Allie. Just admit you feel the same.”

“Admit what? That I haven’t stopped thinking about you since the moment I turned around and saw you at the gala? That I can’t stop picturing what could have happened in your office? Or about how part of me was disappointed you didn’t f*ck me on that barstool? Is that what you want me to admit, Hudson, that no matter how many years have passed, I still want you as much as I did back then?”

“Yes, I need to hear you say it.”

About the Book - Copy

I cry for the man I used to know, the man I used to love…until his love killed mine.

My name is Haley Macknight, and I’m dying inside. From the outside my life is every woman’s dream. I’m married to Jude Macknight, a handsome billionaire who loves me…too much.

Once upon a time, I loved him. But that love is dead. Unwilling to let me go, I’ve become his obsession. He will stop at nothing to make sure I remain in a marriage I no longer want, inside my gilded cage.

Each day I pull away from Jude, I watch him transform into a monster. Before my eyes, he becomes a man I don’t recognize, a dangerous man. He makes it clear that I belong to him, that my life is no longer my own. If I leave, he’ll kill me. But if I stay, I’ll die a slow death.

I stood inside the walk-in closet and studied the clothes Jude had asked his assistant to buy me, expensive clothes I wouldn’t have a chance to wear again.

Last night I arrived at a decision. I was leaving. And I wouldn’t take anything more than the money he had given me—most of which I still had—and the clothes on my back. Waiting for something to happen and not being able to do anything unnerved me. The feeling of helplessness was getting to me.

Madison was no more than two hours away from Serendipity, but Serendipity was the last place I wanted to go back to. At least not yet. Even if I saw nothing in the news, the small town would possibly be crawling with police. I wasn’t about to walk willingly into my jail cell.

The money I had would be more than enough to get me as far as away from both Madison and Serendipity as possible. I’d find a small town to hide, where I could get a chance to glue the pieces of my shattered life back together. And hope the past never caught up with me.

But it was only midday. I’d wait until dinner, when Lin left to go home. I wouldn’t want her alerting Jude about my departure.

I crawled under the fresh bed sheets. The magnolia-scented fabric softener clinging to them made me think of my mother, of happier times, before Elizabeth left our lives.

Book Review - Copy

It is a great pleasure to read and review Veiled Obsession by Dori Lavelle.

Veiled Obsession  by Dori Lavelle carries a very strong warning and should be heeded! This is not your regular hearts and flowers, happily ever after offering!

Veiled Obsession is written as though Ms. Lavelle has immersed herself in researching the subject of domestic abuse or lived through the terror herself. I am amazed at the emotions that I experienced while reading it. As a survivor myself, it resonated very deeply in me. I experienced the joy, the disbelief, the shame, the anguish, the terror and the hopelessness Ms. Lavelle wrote into Haley, and I still feel a deep and abiding hatred for Jude Macknight that will carry me through this series, His Agenda.

Well done, Dori. Your range and writing abilities continue to amaze me with every subsequent novel.

I highly recommend Veiled Obsession by Dori Lavelle and give it five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

About “Torn”

If not for Sadie Keaton, Joe Dawson’s best friend since childhood and the woman he’s been in love with for as long as he can remember, he can’t imagine where he’d be. For the past year, Joe’s been struggling with PTSD after returning home from Afghanistan with the wounds that have left him scarred—both inside and out, and Sadie’s unwavering faith and support has been all that’s kept him going. But when they finally share an unexpected moment of passion, Joe has a hard time believing that Sadie could have feelings for the damaged man he has become and worries that her heart is being ruled by pity and not love. And those doubts are only compounded now that he’s set to resume his duty as a deputy sheriff. But when Sadie starts receiving messages from a secret admirer, messages that grow increasingly frightening and threatening, Joe has to put aside his self-doubt in order to save Sadie from her stalker and put an end to the bastard’s dangerous game before it’s too late to confess the truth of his heart.

Kate SeRine’s “Torn”

from Way of the Warrior

There’d been a few times over the years that they’d come close to kissing again. When Joe had held her in his arms while Sadie cried from a recent broken heart after some idiot had dumped her, when she’d comforted him after his mother’s death, before he’d left for Afghanistan, and they’d clung to each other, the thought of being parted again too difficult to even put into words. But they’d always held back, afraid that giving in would ruin their friendship.

But this time… Something had changed. There was something more, a longing that was impossible to deny.

He slowly slid his hand around to the small of her back, pressing ever so slightly, bringing her just a little closer. He could feel her breath quicken, saw her eyes dilate, growing darker. And to his astonishment, her lids drifted shut.

For a split second he hesitated, their mouths so close the heat of their breath intermingled. But only for an instant. When his lips brushed hers in a tender, lingering kiss, it sent a shot of electricity through every nerve ending in his body. Had he not been drenched in sweat from his run, he would’ve dragged her against him and finally explored the mystery of those full lips in the way he’d longed to, but knowing she was on her way to work, he had to content himself with gently grasping the nape of her neck, sliding his fingers into the length of the silky chestnut brown hair that fell below her shoulders, and kissing her slowly, languidly, savoring the warmth of her lips as they sought his.

A tiny moan escaped her, buzzing against his lips. Encouraged, he deepened the kiss, his tongue sweeping across the seam of her mouth. It was all he could do not to whoop for joy when her lips parted, inviting him in.

Sadie’s hands rested lightly against his chest, her palms a welcome warmth against his already heated skin. He took a half step closer but quickly stepped back when his raging erection threatened to give away just how badly he wanted her. “Ah, God, Sadie,” he murmured when her hands began to roam.

“I know,” she replied, her voice strained, breathless as she pressed kisses to the corner of his mouth, jaw, chin. “I know.”

The Unexpected Consequences of Love

by Jill Mansell

“Waaah, stop it,” shrieked Tula as Riley scooped her up into the air. “Put me down! I’m too heavy…

“Don’t give me that. You’re light as a feather. Okay, hang on tight…”

You hang on tight,” Tula retorted, before letting out another yelp as he expertly threw her over his shoulder in a fireman’s lift.

In front of them in the parking lot of the Mermaid Inn, CJ called out, “Everybody ready? Down to the beach, around the rocks at the end, and back again.” He raised two ominously murky pint glasses like trophies. “Losers have to drink these.”

There were six couples taking part. Tula was just glad she wasn’t wearing a short skirt. But the party was brilliant, everyone was incredibly friendly, and the drinking games had been hilarious. So long as they didn’t lose this one; God only knew what had gone into making that muddy–looking brew.

“Three…two…one…GO,” bellowed CJ, and they were off.

Urgh, being carried in a fireman’s lift was a bumpy experience. Clinging on for dear life, Tula admired Riley’s physique; his shoulders were broad and his biceps rocklike as he ran out of the parking lot and down onto the beach.

“Don’t be sick down my back,” he warned as they headed for the outcrop of three rocks exposed by the low tide at the far end of the beach.

“I’m never sick.” Raising her head and seeing the rest of the party cheering them on, her heart clenched with joy at the sight of Josh’s instantly recognizable figure among them. He was here; at last he’d turned up. Hooray!

It was dark, but the full moon and the strings of lights looped between each of the street lamps along the esplanade went some way toward illuminating the beach. She could see and hear the white, foamy waves breaking along the shoreline. The whoops and shrieks of the other contestants mingled in the warm night air with the yells of encouragement from the pub behind them. Just as they reached the rocks, Riley tripped, lost his footing, and stumbled…

And then they were lying on the sand, tangled up in each other, and he was saying, “Sorry, that was the seaweed. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” He’d been the one who’d broken her fall; she’d managed to land inelegantly on top of him. “How about you?”

“Never better.” He was grinning up at her, his long, blond hair spread out on the sand beneath his head. His eyes glinted with mischief as he slid his hand around the back of her neck. “Well, now we’re here, seems like an opportunity too good to waste…”

“Losers!” bawled one of the other couples, racing past them.

“That’s what they think,” Riley murmured. “Sometimes losers win.”

“Ooh no, no no no.” Before he could guide her mouth down to meet his, Tula vigorously shook her head and wriggled away.

No.” Glancing over in the direction of the Mermaid’s parking lot, she could still see the others outside, watching the racers. And if she could see Josh from here, the chances were that he could see her.

“Oh dear. Someone else you’ve got your eye on?” Riley’s tone was playful.

Ignoring her protest, he raised his eyebrows. “Josh?”

“Come on. I saw the way you were looking at him this afternoon. It was pretty obvious.”

“Oh God. Really?” Tula’s heart sank; just for once in her life why couldn’t she be the cool, enigmatic type?

“To be fair, I’m pretty much an expert.” Rising to his feet and brushing the sand off his jeans, Riley added, “Although I’m usually the one on the receiving end.”

“Sorry.” She smiled at his wounded expression.

“And I really liked you too. This is crushing.” Holding out his hands, he hauled her upright. “I’ve lost all my confidence now.”

“I’m sure you have.”

“I’m not that ugly, am I?”

“You’re beautiful,” Tula assured him as her phone beeped.

It was a text from Sophie:

What are you two DOING out there??

Leaning in to read it, Riley said, “Nothing, sadly.” Then he took the phone from her, switched it to camera mode, and held it at arm’s length, capturing both their faces on the screen. “There you go, a little something to remind you of the time we met, that romantic fireman’s lift you were given on the beach. In years to come, you’ll look at this photo and think, damn, what an idiot I was to turn him down, the one who got away.”

“I had my chance and I blew it.” Tula nodded sympathetically.

“You’ll probably regret it for the rest of your life. Your friends will see this picture of us and go, ‘Wow, who’s that? He’s gorgeous!’”

“They will say that.” If she’d thought for one second he meant any of this, Tula wouldn’t have been able to joke about it. “I’ll probably have this photo blown up to poster size and hung on my bedroom wall. I expect I’ll cry myself to sleep every night in my lonely single bed.”

Riley slung a companionable arm around her shoulders as they made their way back up the beach to the Mermaid. “I really hope that happens. It’s no more than you deserve.”

“I’m not sure why we’re having this conversation. Hannah’s your employee.” James tapped a golf ball into a practice cup. The door to his office was closed or he’d never have indulged, though in Trent’s experience, when the putter came out, James was working through some maze of subrogation or indemnity language.

“We’re having this conversation because I very nearly kissed an employee. You’re pulling to the left.”

James nodded, ever serious about his play. “Because I’m the office Lothario, you’re coming to me for what? Pointers? Absolution? Both?”

“How about moral support?”

He missed again, by a whisker. “Is this serious?”

“I don’t know.” Trent sat back in James’s ergonomically ingenious chair and propped his feet on the corner of the desk. “It’s something.”

“You’ve known the woman two days, and you’re hitting on her? Mac won’t approve.”

“Mac doesn’t approve of anything except thin mints in moderation and regularly annihilating the state’s attorney’s case.”

“He’s getting worse.” James moved back a couple of feet and squinted down the handle of his putter. “Needs to get his wick trimmed.”

“Your answer to everything.”

“When has a good old-fashioned bout of sweaty sex ever hurt a guy’s outlook on life?”

“It ain’t world peace, James.”

“A little not-quite kiss on the cheek in public is hardly World War III. Did she slap you?”

“She’s the quiet type.”

“Did she quietly ask you to desist? Threaten legal action?” He wiggled swooping golden brows.

“She did not.” Not yet.

“What did she do?”

This was what Trent had sought from his brother, analysis and reflection rather than interrogation. “She blushed.”

James straightened, expression puzzled. “A grown woman admitted to the bar in the great State of Maryland, practitioner of family law, wearer of sensible shoes – all you did was not kiss her on the cheek and she blushed? Blushed?”

“Very becomingly, and gave me a Mona Lisa smile.”
