One of the things I love best about December is the fragrance of Christmas. Of course, you can buy all sorts of Christmas sprays, but I make my own in several ways.  Our Christmas dessert is fresh lemon icebox pie. All of the the lemon husks go into a big pot of simmering water on the back of my stove.

Add cinnamon, nutmeg, whole cloves, apple peelings and cores and orange slices and peels. If you happen to have on hand an essential oil of mint or lavender, toss in a few drops. Don’t turn on the stove’s vent fan, or you will send that lovely fragrance into your yard. Just keep adding water as the pot simmers down—you can use the mixture for the Twelve Days of Christmas.

If you are like me, you are gonna need that back burner for cooking Christmas dinner. The mixture can freshen your  disposal or go into a compost bin, or just sit in a jar under a counter or the kitchen sink. For instant Christmas Fragrance, I “perk” cinnamon, nutmeg and whole cloves in an old-fashioned percolator just before guests arrive.

Here is something I noticed over the years: When that lovely fragrance was permeating the house, my kids stopped bickering, my teenagers were more open and less sassy and the man in the house was less stressed and actually volunteered to help wash dishes. Cinnamon makes Christmas magic.

Need Help? Hire a Ghost. She Cooks.  Lottie Roberts has been sitting on her bones since the Civil War, waiting for her ticket to heaven until Justine Hale moves into Lottie’s two-hundred-year-old house with three generations of emotional baggage: Her mother, her ex mother-in-law and two pesky children. Lottie senses in Justine a kindred spirit, one filled with heartache and in reduced circumstances, which mirrors Lottie’s situation exactly. Justine needs help. Lottie is of a mind to provide it, but before she can say squat, Tucker Highsmith arrives. His dark eyes, lazy grin, and sexy Alabama drawl coupled with the dern braggart’s Mr. Fix-it talents just might be the answer to all of Justine’s problems–or,  maybe not… Because Lottie has her own agenda, one she has been waiting, hoping and praying for since she discovered her bones on a hidden staircase.

The Reluctant Hero
by Jackie Weger

Five Stars

“This was a clean, well written novel and caught me quite by surprise. I found the characters adorable, well developed and sometimes hysterical with their antics. I laughed out loud. It was really a great read. Excitement, survival, a horde of kids and fighting the elements equalled a very engaging, well written book and one I will totally cherish. Well worth the read.” ~ avp

“Beautifully written, I was up until 3:30 a.m.  finishing this story. The interview [with Capt Stillman] at the end was a perfect wrap-up.” ~ avp

Parnell Stillman is an ace pilot and man to the bone. The kind of man who keeps every motorized piece of equipment he owns in pristine condition–but his socks don’t match. Flying is his high road until one sleet-filled morning–it isn’t. Mischance forces his plane down in a frozen wilderness. He can survive, but his live cargo is another matter–an annoying social worker and five orphans–the most irksome freight he has ever hauled in his career. Rebecca Hollis is determined to force the disagreeable, lackadaisical pilot to do whatever is necessary to insure the survival and rescue of the orphans… Even if it means making the noble gesture of keeping her mouth shut. But the pilot isn’t having it. Heroics is not his thing. No way. No how. No time. He’d rather dance with a grizzly or wrestle a puma than succumb to a wily do-gooder’s shenanigans. Rebecca Hollis has other ideas to ensure the rescue of the orphans—lots of them, all artful and disingenuous—one of which is bound to work… Or  maybe not.

About the book

B&N Fly HouseThe Earth’s atmosphere is swiss cheese.  To avoid the oncoming oxygen crisis, black-sheep heiress, Maeve Aypotu, has been chemically suspended in one of the Archive’s plush, multi-million dollar chambers, located underground.  Scientists claim they can patch everything up in about 15 years, so, just to be safe, the Archive programmed the chambers to open in 17 years.

And then, everything on Earth went wrong.

Up on the surface, Pluto has taken control of the planet, scorching away all signs of human civilization and reconstructing the environment to suit the Plutian’s lucrative dragon trade.  Humans that survived weree forced to be laborers, divided into five Houses, each handling a different stage of the dragon harvest.  Survival and repopulation have become a currency among the Houses.  To make matters worse, Rha Diem, the rugged leader of the Fly House, has gotten word that the cost of existence just rose to a price that no human should have to pay.  And now there is a whole Archive of survivors that will be expected to pay too.

Learning to trust one another may need to start small—with the fusion of one powerful Rha and one bad ass black sheep—before a damaged race can even hope to regain control of their alien Earth.

FAVORITE EXCERPT

Maeve laid her head on his chest, feeling the lazy drag of his fingers through her hair.  His heart beat strong and steady below her ear.  She was so suddenly lost in this man, it was frightening.  The grip on her own independence slipped.  She knew she would give him whatever he wanted of her.  Everything.  Anything.  All of it.  It meant that he could destroy her, if he desired; she would give him that ability too.   It overwhelmed her.  His presence rendered her muscles incapable of moving away from him.

“This is what weakness is like,” she whispered, more to herself than to him, but his fingers paused.

“No,” his tone was soft, but disapproving.  “This is what trust is like.”

 EntangledMoments-SmCover

Synopsis:

A deadly accident can take a life in more than one way.

Four years ago, Carlene Adams made a deadly mistake. A tragic accident derailed the future she’d hoped for, taking the life of the man she’d planned to spend forever with.

As a self-imposed penance for her solitary sin, Carlene has given up on every dream she ever had. She has committed to spend every remaining moment trying to make up for that one instance when everything changed.

Then she gets a second chance.

When Carlene meets Nick Johnson, the single kiss they share awakens the desires she shoved aside for so long. Suddenly she wants more than what she believe she deserves. Will she ever see him again? And if she does, what will that mean for her?

A thing of fate.

Leaving the life she built on regret, Carlene waits for fate to intervene. But just as she begins to believe in a fresh start, she’s forced to realize a horrible truth—one with the power to send her second chance crashing before it even takes off.

Nick isn’t who she thought he was. She isn’t the girl he believed her to be, either. Their lives were intertwined even before they met, and if Carlene tells him the truth, she’ll risk tearing them apart—for good.

REVIEW:

How long is one expected to hold on to the feeling that a better life is undeserved? A month? A year? A decade? A lifetime?

Carlene has spent the last four years filled with contrition for her part in a life-altering tragedy. She stops at the Chapel to pray.

“The tears . . . spilled out, unhindered, warming my cheeks and dripping onto my hands. With every drop that fell, guilt and regret shredded my insides.

. . . After all this time, I still found it difficult to put into words what I’d done.”

Then . . . A stranger. A chance meeting. A kiss and hope begins to flourish.

Carlene takes one step forward, then another. Enter Nick and watch love ignite. Carlene’s life changes for the better and she succeeds beyond her imagination.

But secrets exist between them, devastating secrets that could destroy their love so fragile.

This novella by Dori Lavelle took hold of me and I couldn’t put it down until I found out what the secrets were. Intriguing. Captivating. Mezmerizing. Fascinating characters. I can’t wait for the next installment of the Moments in Time Novella Series, Rekindled Moments, due to be released in February 2014.

It is my pleasure to interview J.H. Cardwell, author of Atonement. Welcome to Room With Books, Julie!

First let me give you a bit of Julie’s background.

I have spent years in the medical field; the first few as a Cardiac Specialty Nurse, and over the last decade as a Pharmaceutical and Medical Sales Representative. I have gathered mounds of experience both personally and professionally to pour into my long-time passion…writing. After years of power points in the corporate world, I am enjoying working on stories in romance fiction with my first novel, Attainment, and the newly released sequel, Atonement. I live in a small town in NC with my husband and four children. While continuing to work in sales, I am also exploring my writing late at night and in the wee hours of the morning when my children are tucked safely in bed.

Julie, tell me about Atonement and what inspired you to write it?
I’ve written many short stories over the years, but I contemplated for a while over a story for my first novel. It turns out, the story hit me as the one from a local newspaper article about a college date rape where the victim didn’t realize she knew the attacker until a year later when he started talking about the incident. I am a sucker for a good love story, and a triumph over a dark past. This series encompasses it all along with a great love triangle. Choices…choices.

When you start writing do you have the story outlined or do your characters dictate what will happen?
A little of both I suppose. I do have a focused outline of the story and characters with bios. I also, however, let the characters unfold on the paper; therefore, the story changes gears occasionally, veering off the original planned course.

Have you ever had arguments with your characters and who usually wins?
Yes! Of course, I usually win, after all a few strokes of the delete key and I could erase them and they know it! Lol. Sometimes, they have yielded a good argument if in fact their character has dictated how the story ended up changing. When you read Attainment, take a look at John’s character and you will know what I mean. I had the hardest decision on how to end it. John’s character was determined to be remembered and be back for book two! In that case, he definitely won out!

What is one thing about you your readers would be surprised to know?
I would say the fact that I have four kids. However, if you read any write-up about me you would have figured that out right away. So, a surprise I haven’t mentioned might would be my love of animals. While we currently only have a cat for a pet (since we recently moved to the city), I have had at least twenty dogs in my lifetime (and ten cats, birds, geese, a rescued squirrel, fish, crab, hamsters…I could add more, but I see how crazy I sound already).

If you could write with any other author who would it be any why?
I LOVE fiction, and romance at that. But one day in the future, I hope to write a book about parenting and how it’s okay to fail and prevail. Both are acceptable qualities, thankfully. I would probably use a therapist/pastor of sorts who is also a parent. I haven’t made it that far in my non-fiction adventures, but I certainly have that as a lofty goal, and I would choose someone with more credentials than I to be a guidance to other parents.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
My ambitions were forever changing. One dream that lasted several years was to become an actress like Aileen Quinn in the original Annie. I would run around singing her ‘Maybe’ song and ‘Tomorrow’ all the while pretending to act out different scenes in the mirror.

When did you decide to write and what prompted you to start?
I was part of the Newspaper and Yearbook staff in High school, as well as college. I loved grabbing the attention of the reader then, but I would have to say I started writing poetry at an early, early age. When my first grandparent passed away, I wrote a poem on his behalf. It was both therapeutic for me, and comforting to others. Over the years, that has blossomed into short stories and now novels.

What music inspires your writing?
It truly depends on my mood and the story-line as for what type of music I listen to. There isn’t a genre that I can’t be happy finding a song in. However, many times I just want silence to feed my thoughts.

Fun Facts:

What is your favorite breakfast?
When I actually take time to eat breakfast, I would say I love eggs and coffee. Otherwise, I grab a double dark chocolate Zone bar as I’m flying out the door.

What is your favorite color?
My favorite color is turquoise. It reminds me of the sea and tranquility and my favorite place is the beach!

What is your favorite movie?
I have SO many favorites. I love a good chick flick and I love comedies. My all-time favorite is probably Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze or Steele Magnolia’s with Julia Roberts and Sally Field. I have probably watched them both an excess of thirty times!

What is your dream car?
Oh my! Well, if you read Attainment, you’ll recognize my dream car as Reese’s vintage white jeep with tan leather interior. I may reward myself with one, one of these days. My luxury dream car is a white, convertible, antique Mercedes!

Bramer, Julia: Side Effects

Side Effects Blog Tour

Julia Bramer

Book Description

 September 21, 2013

“Her sweetness seeps into his soul and the ground shifts beneath him again, his primal need for her bubbling and boiling to the surface, and he makes a decision that will change his life forever, sure it’s a side effect of the Vitamin D treatment because he would never have contemplated the drastic move before it.”

The steamy tale continues as Jed and Olivia are forced to flee the country and their relationship heats up and takes an unexpected turn. From Jamaica to Brazil to New York, their journey is packed with surprising twists, dark revelations and more erotic encounters, and Jed’s decadent past tests their love and one secret will remain buried forever.

Strong sexual content.

Excerpt:

Jed waits for her in their bedroom, running his hands through his hair and pacing anxiously.  He has a lot to do and ticks through the list in his head, but when Olivia enters the room, peeking shyly at him with those beguiling green eyes, he is overcome by a primitive desire–an overpowering need–and he wants to fuck her–hard, his cock hardening with anticipation.  He decides the plan can wait, turns on the TV, sets the volume low and approaches her slowly.

“Olivia,” he murmurs, backing her against the wall and sniffing her hair.  “You’re so beautiful…”

Olivia’s pulse races and she locks eyes with him–dark chocolate magic–and her insides tense.

“I want to fuck you,” he whispers, his lips grazing hers.  “Can you be quiet?  Can you be absolutely silent?”

Her brows crease, doubting that’s possible, and he braces his hands on the wall and pins her to it.

“If you moan and groan and grunt, I won’t fuck you,” he warns silkily.

She wriggles against him and protests, “I don’t grunt.”

He snorts and arches a brow, planting a gentle kiss on her nose.  “Okay, you don’t grunt,” he says softly, smiling his rare, dazzling spine-tingling smile.

Olivia trembles and every sinew below her waist aches with want.  She wraps her arms around his neck and her lips seek his, but he pulls back and his dark eyes scorch into her.

“Can you do it, Olivia?  Can you be quiet?” he breathes huskily.

Olivia nods robotically, mesmerized by the wicked gleam in his eyes, and he cups her face, kisses her soundly and grinds the hard bulge beneath his jeans against her.  She suppresses a moan, but as his velvety tongue explores her mouth and his warm hands slip under the robe and burnish her flesh, caressing her breasts and tormenting her nipples, she doesn’t know if she can keep her promise.

The only way to stop him is for Ramose to put his trust in Tamara, but first must gain the same from her.  The ensuing sensual relationship is filled with romance, lust and love.  Their relationship is tested by an unnatural evil. Will her powers over fire, combined with his ice be enough to win the day?  Or will the ancient gods and goddesses of Egypt destroy more than just their love?

EXCERPT:

Tamara stopped with the key halfway in the lock on her door and whirled around. “What did you say?”

“You heard me,” he said.

A twinge of frustrated anger sparked inside her. She didn’t tolerate her younger brother ordering her around, and she surely wasn’t going to tolerate anyone else to either. She raised a finger and pointed it at his chest. “Oh, no, we aren’t even going down this path. Let me stop you right there.” Her finger poked at hard as rock muscles, and his eyes widened, this time in surprise. “I’ve raised three sisters and a brother. Nobody tells me what to do. I make my own decisions, buster. If you think for an instant I’ll let some overgrown child tell me to stay away from the playground bully, you’ve got another thing coming.”

His brow raised, and his oh so heavenly full lips quirked into a smile. “Overgrown child?”

“You know what I mean.” Tamara’s stomach twisted inside. She really hadn’t meant to come on so strong, but, then, she hadn’t expected the sudden humor in his eyes either. That smile did something to her insides, making her muscles quiver like Jell-O.

He softened, leaning toward her, his face so close.

Until now, she’d disregarded how much like her dream man he looked. Well, she’d tried to ignore it. Just like she’d tried not to notice how arousing that small tattoo on his cheek was. But, then, he offered her his crooked half smile, and strange things happened inside her. Damn, he’s sexy.

“Is that how you see me?” He rested one arm on the doorframe, leaning toward her. Despite the casual pose, he reeked of masculine strength. Power rolled over her, pulling her ever closer to his heat, feathering across her body like wings.

The tingle along her skin, so light and so warm, was like magick. Or was it her imagination? But when his breath whispered across her face, his masculine scent drove all inquisitive thoughts from her mind. Her eyes fluttered, though she fought to keep them open.

His scent was hard, edgy, and oh so male. It took all she had to not lean forward and inhale like some drug addict.

Any other time, someone so tall and imposing leaning over her like this would set off all kinds of alarms in her head. Yet, with Ramose, she didn’t feel uncomfortable. Was that because of the dream? If so, she was headed for a big disappointment, because there was no way this man was the same one.

She would not let him kiss her. That was so not happening on her first night in Egypt.

Was it?

He waited, with that crooked half smile, his head cocked to one side.

“What?” she finally asked, realizing she’d forgotten his question.

“Like an overgrown child?” His eyes darkened, and the edge of purple energy flashed along the perimeter of his body.

Tamara’s breath hitched, her lips curving into a smile. She’d bet if he could see her aura, it’d be more than edged with purple. Aw, hell, maybe it was going to happen. What was the harm in a simple kiss? “Aren’t all men overgrown children?”

What was she doing? Her voice didn’t even sound like hers. Instead, it sounded like some come-hither sex goddess or something. She bit her lip, but, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t look away.

He chuckled, his gaze never leaving hers. “I have not been called a child for many, many years, Tamara.” His soft, dark curls brushed her cheek, and he dipped his head, drawing closer.

The sound of his laughter did strange things inside her, and her knees trembled. She leaned back against her door. She really should unlock it, go inside, get on the phone, and yell at Julie. But, right this instant, all she could think about was the powerful man leaning over her, his masculine scent teasing her senses.

Sense.

Yep, she needed to find some because every bit of common sense had scattered about the time he’d leaned against the doorjamb. “Maybe it’s time someone reminded you of who you are.”

He laughed again, the sound low in his throat. He brushed aside a stray hair teasing her cheek. She swallowed hard when he let his hand trail down her shoulder to her arm bracelet. His eyes sparked, and, for an instant, she thought she saw anger flicker in his aura, but it disappeared before she could be sure.

“Tomorrow, then,” he said. He leaned forward, and she thought he would kiss her now. She longed for his lips to touch hers, but he merely whispered in her ear. “Nine in the morning. Be ready.”

He turned and moved down the hall.

Tamara was tempted to watch him until he reached the elevator, but that would be just wrong. What the hell? It’s a vacation. She peered down the hall one more time.

Oooh, bad idea. His trousers clung to his butt, cupping each cheek as delicately as a woman’s hands.

With heat burning in her cheeks, Tamara jerked back to her door, twisted the key, and charged inside, slamming the door between them.

AUTHOR Interview, Bio and Links:

What part of the writing process do you dread?

The kicking out the first draft, because it never reads well, and I always hate the results.  Then I work the magic of editing and it changes into something that sparkles!

What is your favorite Joke?

Wow – I’m blank.  No really.  Blank.

Where do you get your best ideas?

From research and real events.  Sometimes I’ll watch the news, and think “That would be interesting as a plot to a story” and then it explodes from there.  Also, I watch the Discovery channel a lot.  Learning about unusual events and places sparks all kinds of ideas.  Also, places I’ve been, people I meet, everyone.  The current release has been in my mind since I visited Egypt so many years ago.

What do you do to relax?

Sleep, play with the dogs, and of course reading.

Do you write about what turns you on?

Now that’s just a loaded question and gets me in so much trouble after convincing everyone in the family that the sex scenes are about the characters and not my imagination.  Seriously, I write sex scenes that match my characters more than me.  But not everyone believes that.

Born in Atlanta, the daughter of an Army Soldier during the early stages of the Viet Nam war, I spent my childhood traveling from state to state, finally ending up overseas in Germany where I graduated high school six months early.

My writing career however began as a young Airman in the Air Force, writing monthly articles for the weekly base paper.  The articles ranged from climatological data to full center fold articles on the destructive forces of hurricanes.  As I increased in rank, my writing changed to more technological instruction, including such works as  WSR-88D Doppler Radar Data Interpretation Guide for North Carolina Stations, and Station Operating Procedures.

But my early writing wasn’t limited only to the technological side.  I’ve written multiple dog training and behavior articles for canine websites such as Sonora Canine Freestyle, and also the Ask Blackjack column, a fun training column in the voice of my labrador retriever, then a young pup.

My first book, SheWolf, won 2nd place for Best First book in RWA’s PFF&P Prism awards.

I’m married to a wonderful man named Doug, who is also retired Air Force.  We live in North Carolina with our two dogs.

“Rollins and Cantrell turn what we think we know about vampires on its proverbial ear and will leave you thinking and wondering about what you know about the Christian religion.

I LOVE a book that makes me THINK and wonder, and research myself. If an author can stimulate my brain like that, I am more likely to come back and read ALL of their books!”

Last year James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell left readers on the edge of their seats at the end of The Blood Gospel, the debut novel in “The Order of the Sanguines Series” about an ancient Vatican order who seek the answers to a mystery found within the pages of a gospel written in Christ’s own blood.  Reviewers praised the first in the new series as, “captivating” (Military Press), “a page-turner” (Associated Press) and “The Da Vinci Code meets vampires” (Booklist).

Now the winning writer-ly duo opens the next chapter in a world of shadow and light, of salvation and damnation, where the fate of the heavens is locked within a child of INNOCENT BLOOD (Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, on sale 12/10/2013, ISBN: 9780061991066, $27.99).

A vicious attack at a ranch in California thrusts archaeologist Erin Granger back into the folds of the Sanguines, an immortal order founded on the blood of Christ and tasked with protecting the world from the beasts haunting its shadows.  Following the prophetic words found in the Blood Gospel—a tome written by Christ and lost for centuries—Erin must again join forces with Army Sergeant Jordan Stone and Father Rhun Korza to discover and protect a boy believed to be an angel given flesh.

But an enigmatic enemy of immense power and terrifying ambition seeks the same child—not to save the world, but to hasten its destruction. For any hope of victory, Erin must discover the truth behind Christ’s early years and understand His first true miracle, an event wrapped in sin and destruction, an act that yet remains unfulfilled and holds the only hope for the world.

The search for the truth will take Erin and the others across centuries and around the world, from the dusty plains of the Holy Land to the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, from the catacombs of Rome to an iron fortress in the Mediterranean Sea, and at last to the very gates of Hell itself, where their destiny—and the fate of mankind—awaits.

With The Blood Gospel, Rollins and Cantrell breathtakingly combined science, myth, and religion and introduced a world where miracles hold new meaning and the fight for good over evil is far more complicated than we ever dreamed. In INNOCENT BLOOD they again take us to the edge of destruction . . . and into the deepest reaches of imagination.

REVIEW:

One of the most thrilling novels I’ve read this year to be sure!

She knew all too well the prophecy concerning [The First Angel] that mythic figure. She pictured the words inscribed on the first page of the Blood Gospel, words written by Christ, a prediction of a coming war–and a way to avert it.

A great War of the heavens looms. For the forces of goodness to prevail, a Weapon must be forged of this Gospel written in my own blood. The trio of prophecy must bring the book to the First Angel for his blessing. Only thus may they secure salvation for the world.

This novel is the continuation of the story begun in The Blood Gospel, which I haven’t read YET. Even without the previous novel as background, Innocent Blood was very easy to get caught up in.

The tension begins at the first page and doesn’t let up through the ending of the novel and I find myself wishing for the next book in this series before my mind has truly digested all I have read. The conspiracies and adventure abound and I highly recommend Innocent Blood to anyone who enjoys  intrigue mixed with ancient lore and action.

Q&A for INNOCENT BLOOD

by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell

Q. You now have co-authored two books in “The Order of the Sanguines Series”, how did you decide to join forces? How do two prolific minds work together during the writing process?

Jim:  The seed for this series came during a trip to a museum in Los Angeles, where I found myself staring at Rembrandt’s painting of “The Raising of Lazarus.”  It’s a macabre and dark imagining of this miracle of Christ, and it struck me strange how scared everyone looked in the painting.  This moment started me down a road of reflection about early Catholicism, vampirism, and a story began to unfold, a story that examines the line between faith and science. I knew this could be a huge and groundbreaking new mythology, a story so epic in scope that I knew I didn’t want to tackle this alone.

Rebecca: I met Jim at the Maui Writer’s Conference just before my first novel, A Trace of Smoke, was published.  He was my instructor in a thriller-writing course and we kept in touch after that. I’d just put the finishing touches on my fourth novel when he called me out of the blue about this series with vampires who live on transubstantiated blood.  We spent a long time on that call talking about the world of the Sanguinists and the strigoi. We had very similar visions of that world, and could see what we each would bring to it. The writing process involves a lot of talking on Skype, rewriting, and driving each other generally crazy.

 Q. INNOCENT BLOOD is a terrific blend of supernatural, mystery, and thriller. Which one of these aspects did you develop first in the genesis of the book?

Rebecca: All of them at once, I think. We had already created the supernatural world and the characters that inhabited it, so for the second book we wanted venture further afield in that world and more deeply into the psyches of the characters.

Jim:  It certainly had to be all worked out as a whole, almost like a jigsaw puzzle, every piece had to be examined and turned until if fit just right.  We thought this was important so that the paranormal elements of the story didn’t overwhelm our characters.  Though this series deals with immortal beings and creatures both light and dark, we didn’t want to lose that exploration of the human condition.  To touch a reader emotionally, the story and characters must be accessible and relatable.  To achieve that required all the elements of the story to work in harmony and as a whole tapestry.

Q. Did you face any challenges with writing the second book, INNOCENT BLOOD, that you didn’t face with the debut in the series, THE BLOOD GOSPEL?

Jim:  During the creation of the first book, it was all about world building, creating this landscape where vampires existed and found themselves folded within the cloak of the Catholic Church.  It was also about discovering our main characters, how they were going to engage and react.  With that all established, we were free to build and expand upon that world and more deeply explore our characters.  We initially thought it would be easy, since the groundwork and mythology was already in place, but we quickly learned of a new challenge.

Rebecca:  The new challenge was figuring out how the characters had grown and changed as a result of the events in the first book. They all had strong personalities, but they went through a lot in their search for THE BLOOD GOSPEL, and they haven’t had time to process it all.

 Q. What was the biggest challenge in further developing the characters that appeared in THE BLOOD GOSPEL, for the second book in the Sanguines series, INNOCENT BLOOD?

Rebecca: I answered this one early, didn’t I? Sorry about that. The characters had some intense experiences in the first book, especially Erin, and that leaves a mark. She realized that everything she thought she knew was incomplete—monsters existed in the world and had been leaving their mark on history for thousands of years. This shook up her intellectual worldview, and I think she’s still grappling with it. Plus, of course, the nature of her relationships with Jordan and Rhun changed a lot in the first book, and that makes all of their interactions more complex and emotionally charged.

Jim:  Exactly.  I always dislike books where characters escape great peril with barely a scratch and have no lasting effect.  They get shot in the shoulder on page 4 and are perfectly fine by page 6.  And it’s not just the physical aftermath, but the emotional aftermath of such trauma.  That’s something we explored deeply in this second novel.  Everyone was drastically changed by events in the first book, surviving a trial by fire.  Now they have to put their lives back together, while facing a new and even greater threat.

Q. Christian is such an interesting and dynamic character, is that why you chose to write a prequel, BLOOD BROTHERS, about this character?  How did this character come to life for you both?

Jim:  Christian is first mentioned in passing in THE BLOOD GOSPEL.  Even in that brief reference in the first book, readers were offered a hint that something was different about him.  We knew we always wanted to introduce a “younger” vampire into the Sanguinist fold.

Rebecca: We introduced the older, more experienced Sanguinists in THE BLOOD GOSPEL. Rhun is hundreds of years old, and his mentor, Cardinal Bernard, has been around at least since the Crusades. Even as they live forward in time, their thought patterns and beliefs are based on a very different world. We thought it would be interesting to show what a modern, irreverent Sanguinist might add to the mix. Christian was turned in the late 1960s, so he’s part of the same century as Erin and Jordan. This drives Rhun a bit nuts, which is always fun to watch.

Q. In the INNOCENT BLOOD and its prequel, THE BLOOD GOSPEL, you introduced elements of a ‘mystical and otherworldly’ nature: religion, Scriptures, apocrypha, angelology. Has anything in your research completely shocked you and changed the way you thought about religion or spirituality?

Rebecca: I was surprised by how easy it was to create the Sanguinist/strigoi mythology by using references to existing religious documents. I don’t think there is a vampiric sect in the Catholic Church, for example, but it does dovetail well with many of their traditions: turning wine into the blood of Christ, wearing hoods during the day, rules on chastity. It’s endlessly fascinating.

Jim:  The basic premise started with a simple supposition:  If vampires existed, how might have Christ dealt with such a scourge?  How might the early Church have been changed?  How might it look today?  Rebecca and I attempted to answer those questions, which was a great deal of fun, and in the end, like Rebecca mentioned, it was illuminating how much of the trappings of the Church could be folded into the mythology of vampirism.

Q. In an article published by The Telegraph (UK) few days ago, a fellow suspense writer (Patricia Cornwell) claims she has uncovered one of history’s best-kept secrets: the true identity of Jack The Ripper. Is there an unresolved mystery that you would like to investigate together?

Jim:  I always love dabbling into historical mysteries, those pieces of the past that end in a question mark.  In INNOCENT BLOOD, we attempted to explain the “lost years” of Christ’s childhood, that gap in His chronology between the Slaughter of the Innocents by King Herod and Christ’s appearance as a young teenager.  Where was He before that? Why that gap in Christ’s history?  During our research into this topic, we uncovered many suppositions and tantalizing hints.  That’s what I love best about digging into the past (something I think our main character Erin shares):  that continuing quest for the truth.

Rebecca: Jim’s right.  I tend to be fascinated by ancient mysteries—the Ark of the Covenant, the Holy Grail, the Voynich Manuscript—and how people have been affected by their quests for knowledge about these objects.

Q. What’s in store for readers in the next book in “The Order of the Sanguines Series”?

Rebecca: I don’t want to give too much away, but the forces unleashed at the end of INNOCENT BLOOD must be battled, and the power contained in both good and evil blood will not be easily contained.

Jim:  Yes, there are some huge surprises in store both for the characters and for our readers.  Some of them even shocked us.  Then again, when you’re dealing with the apocalypse, no one should be safe.

Excerpt

We’re leaping through the air feet first, the rain falling down on us as we’re suspended above the water below. It’s only five feet down, but somehow I see the pink toenail polish on her feet and the sheen of her legs. Then I see her feet hit the water before I do. I’m holding my breath now, anticipating the cold rush of water around my whole body.

And it feels surreal, the rain pummeling my body as I jump off this cliff with the girl I fell in love with when I was seventeen. To say that I’m falling all over again is cliché and mushy and hopelessly romantic, but it’s true. And even though it’s just mere seconds that we’re suspended in the air, it feels like forever that we’re dangling there together. I’ve never seen my life and future as clear as I do now as I inch toward the water. Whatever happens in the next seventy-odd years that I plan on living, the only thing that matters is that Piper Sullivan is with me. I won’t ever let go of this hand.

The water crashes over me then, consuming me with a coldness that sends shockwaves through my body. My head ducks under momentarily before I pop back up to see Piper’s head emerging next to me. Her eyes are wide and wet with surprise as she exhales, sputtering water in front of her.

She lets out a shriek, “Oh my God, it’s so cold!”

“Hell yeah it is,” I reply as I kick my legs to stay afloat. Our heads bob in water that can’t be any more than sixty degrees, and I realize that we’re not holding hands anymore because we’re both treading water. I swim toward her until our faces are just an inch apart. The rain splashes against the water between us, plopping small splatters of water onto her chin. We’re both breathing hard as I reach underneath the water and wrap my arm around her waist. I feel the lace tucked against her skin and pull her closer until our bodies are rubbing against each other.

“Warm me up,” she whispers.

“I thought you’d never ask,” I say as I press my lips onto hers. They’re warm and soft, and a jolt rushes through my body as I connect with her. Our lips move against each other, slow for only a moment until we’re frantic against each other. She bites my lower lip gently again and damn, does it feel good.

Let’s be honest, it sends me overboard. I explore every inch of her lips and mouth as both of us still bob in the icy water. She reaches for me, putting her arm around my waist and guides her legs toward me. She circles her legs around my waist, and I’m holding her then as she sits on me. She rocks closer to me as I kick to keep us both above water. And I realize that the only thing between us are two thin, so unbelievable thin, layers of fabric. I can feel the goose bumps running along her legs. I hold her there as our lips find each other in the rain. The water crashes down behind us from the waterfalls, the dull thud of splatters echoing in my ears.

A glint of brightness lights up the sky for a brief moment, and I see her face like I’ve never seen it before. It’s full of desire and longing and bliss, and I swear, I catch a glimpse of love. I think for a second that maybe, just maybe Piper Sullivan loves me.
