California – November 17

Umar Sarouk glanced up at the over-sized wall clock in the sterile fifty-by-fifty-foot control room and exhaled a long steady breath. It was six-thirty in the morning, and his twelve hour shift at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant would end in thirty minutes.

After twenty years of marriage, he would not be returning home to his wife and two daughters. There would be no graduations, no weddings to attend, and he wouldn’t be celebrating his forty-seventh birthday next week. Nor would he meet his first grandchild due in three months, born to his eldest daughter, Jewel.

Any apprehension for what he was about to do had disappeared months ago, replaced with deep sorrow for the many things in life he would miss. His children. His wife. His friends.

He leaned back in the chair and looked around the horseshoe-shaped room cluttered with vertical panels, bench boards and control switches used to monitor the nuclear reactor’s coolant pumps, steam generator and pressurizer levels. A lifetime of memories flashed, fast-forwarding through his mind, and he held on to each of them like a life preserver.

He knew the time would come when he would be called upon to carry out a mission and he gladly accepted his fate.

After he was gone, the experts would argue that he had been “radicalized” to an unbending ideology; that specific signs were ignored before he’d reached the final plateau. They call it the “jumping-off point to terror.” But they wouldn’t uncover any of the typical signs.

He had done everything he had been ordered to do to stay off the FBI’s radar, including keeping his thoughts to himself, not once indulging his ideation, beliefs or fears to anyone, not even to his wife. He never lived a life of isolation and never posted messages on social media. More importantly, no one was aware of his link to Al Qaeda. At least, not yet.

For the first time in his life, Umar felt whole—that he was part of something greater.

He wrung his hands together and noticed how his stubby fingers trembled slightly. It was almost time. He stood and faced the clock. His legs shook. He clutched the edge of the desk and held his head high.

Six-forty-nine. The calm before the storm.

For over eight months, he had smuggled all the necessary parts he needed into the facility, hiding pieces in his locker, behind the washroom hand dryer, in his lunch, and even in plastic bags submerged in the toilet tanks. As a nuclear engineer, he had access to restricted areas that were usually off limits to many of the employees. Every free moment he had, he secretly assembled the explosive devices and placed each one where he knew they would have the most impact.

Sweat slid down his forehead and dripped onto the bridge of his nose. He swiped the wetness away with the back of his hand and thought about his wife, Afina, grateful for the many wonderful years they’d had together. She was a good woman. A good mother. She’d never forgive him.

Seven o’clock.

Umar’s heart pounded.

The lights flicked off.

The electrical malfunction had originated at the power station a half mile north. He knew this because it was part of the plan to guarantee his mission was a success.

Two minutes later, the plant’s backup diesel generator fired up. The control room lights flickered twice then stayed on. Panic took over, and his breath came out in small bursts of air.

Remember why you’re doing this.

A loud boom directly below him sounded like lightning hitting a tree. He swore the tile floor shifted. The vibration from the explosion ripped up through his feet and tunneled through his body. He grabbed the edge of the desk to steady his balance.

The first bomb was meant to disrupt the backup power supply and the cooling system to the nuclear reactors.

The room went pitch black.

He felt bad for the men and women still in the plant and for the workers who had just arrived for the day shift—people he’d worked with for over a decade. They wouldn’t be returning to their families either. By now the plant’s internal emergency phone lines would be severed, leaving his friends to rely on their cell phones, if they worked at all, to communicate with their loved ones for the last time. Most would suffer thermal and radiation burns and then quickly perish from the lethal dose of radiation.

Tears filled Umar’s eyes at the thought of what would be coming next.

For a split second, survival instinct kicked in, and he wanted to run. But running wouldn’t save him. Nothing would. At least he’d be at peace, knowing his family was safe, vacationing on a Caribbean island far away from California—away from the fallout.

The floor below his feet shimmied then shook violently. The steel control room door blew outward, taking out half of the outer wall. Chunks of cement, wood, metal, wiring and sections of control panels rained down around him.

The shock wave from the second blast catapulted him backwards and slammed him into the bottom of a cabinet next to the row of alarm panels. He felt the bone in his arm crack and shatter on impact.

Dazed and in agony, Umar lumbered to his feet. Dust and choking gray smoke filled the air. He yanked the collar of his shirt up over his mouth and nose, in hopes of shielding his lungs from the thick smoke.

It won’t matter. It will be over soon.

It seemed as if a lifetime had passed before the third bomb rocked the facility.

If the explosion was successful, it would destroy the plant’s main structure, setting off a massive catastrophic fire and taking out the emergency water feeding system used to cool the reactor’s cores. Then, within minutes, one of the reactors would overheat and explode, sending a plume of radiation into the atmosphere, spreading deadly particles hundreds of miles across the United States, depending on the direction of the wind.

High-pitched emergency sirens wailed, alerting anyone within a ten-mile radius that something horrible had happened at the plant. Within minutes, the San Luis Obispo County warning system that extended from Cayucos in the north to Nipomo in the south would begin to howl.

Intense heat melted patches of skin on his face and bare arms, the pain unbearable. Umar’s throat and lungs burned, and he prayed it would be over soon.

He dropped to his knees and wheezed for a breath, scarcely able to whisper his last dying words. “Allahu Akbar.”

Then he slowly raised his head and stared into the eye of the raging fire roaring toward him.

Book Review

It is my pleasure to feature Oblivion: A Jet Series Novella by Kim Cresswell for review on Room With Books.

Oblivion was a real page turner and Ms. Cresswell was able to keep the tension heightened through the entire novella. From the introduction of a terrorist attack through tracking the people responsible, the characters are vivid and dynamic, and from my perspective, entirely believable. I’m only sorry I waited this long to read Oblivion.

I truly enjoy the way Ms. Cresswell couples the characters from her previous novels, REFLECTION and RETRIBUTION, into the back story of Oblivion. I hope she writes more about Hal and Angela and their involvement with Whitney and Blake.

I highly recommend Oblivion: A Jet Series Novella by Kim Cresswell and give it five nuclear cups of Room With Books coffee!

Book Review

It is my pleasure to provide a review of KIDNAP: Book 1 of the Guy Erma and the Some of Empire Series.

I have to sing praises for this fantastic cover. This is actually what attracted me to the book. I’ve often said, and heard by many others, that without an eye-catching cover, you could have written the next New York Time’s best-seller, but it very well could go unnoticed.

I opened KIDNAP and was immediately dropped in to the apparent battle for Mezzatorra and the loss of the poison pills. By the end of the Prologue, I was vowing revenge on Captain Karl’s behalf. I was in for the long haul. The action is very immediate and the story moves very fluidly and I am very glad to hear that this is only book one of three.

I felt an immediate draw to Teodor. I realize birth brings many privileges, but he seemed to be in the hands of puppets. I was feeling quite sorry for Guy for his desire to join the Dome Elite since I saw from the beginning that his dreams would bring him to the dark underworld of the Freyne, something for which he is ill prepared.

Ms. Melia has a great aptitude for writing Sci-Fi and this is a very appealing book that should be well received by a younger YA audience.

I definitely recommend KIDNAP by Sally Ann Melia and give four steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee to KIDNAP.

Surviving Goodbye Book Review

Surviving Goodbye

by Morgan Parker

Cover Design: By Hang Le (

In the final hours of her life, Elliot Fitch’s wife confesses that he is not the biological father to their 16-year old daughter.

Surviving Goodbye follows Elliot’s collision course with Fate as he embarks on a journey to locate his daughter’s real father. I surrendered to her, felt her body press against me—first her thighs against mine, then her hips, belly, and finally her chest, the feel of her breasts against me and finally, those lips. Veronica’s lips were full, moist, and as soft as cotton infused with a fuel that had me wanting her, all of her.

I spent an afternoon reading Surviving Goodbye by Morgan Parker. It is a novel that is very captivating and hard to set aside once picked up.

I’ve run a full range of emotions right along with Elliot and Lena. I’ve engrossed myself in their lives. I’ve cried for their losses, felt enraged and embittered by their betrayals, and prayed for the quintessential “happily-ever-after” ending. I find myself emotionally drained.

And then it was over. The last page was turned and left me aching for more. I have never picked up a book by Morgan that didn’t leave me feeling somehow bereft that the story didn’t continue.

I truly with I had more eloquent words to express the way I feel about Surviving Goodbye. I guess that is the reason Morgan is a best-selling author and I am a reviewer! Please don’t misinterpret this as self-denigration. I love what I do and I can’t imagine the toil that every writer must put into their novels. I shall be hunting through my Thesaurus for those perfect terms that describe how I feel inside when I read a novel such as this!

I highly recommend this unrivaled novel, Surviving Goodbye, by Morgan Parker. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed.

She looked at him over her shoulder. His blue eyes seared her with heat. The intensity of his stare made her shiver.Lifting one hand, he laid his fingers against the blush of her cheek. Then hewrapped his arms around her from behind. He buried his nose in her hair and let his wolf rumble in satisfaction. “I’m ready to show you off at Julia’s whenever you are.”

“Let me check my face and hair. It’ll only take a minute.” She returned a few minutes later looking amazing.

Her hair was pulled back in a fashionable messy bun. A single strand was left loose to fall down the side of her face to the tip of her breast. He longed to follow that strand to its destination, scrape his teeth against her nipple and inhale her precious scent.

She was without a doubt the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen in his life. Rose placed her arms around his neck, and he relished how her warmth seeped into his body.

“I may have to change my mind, you look too good, and I’ll be forced to kill some idiot who tries to dance with you.”

She rolled her eyes at him and grabbed her purse. “Come on, Romeo, I’m ready for a boat ride and a turn around the dance floor.”

Simon held her hand as she got into the boat then jumped in and revved the motor. “I’ll go slow so I don’t mess up your gorgeous hair.” He winked.

She blew him a kiss and fluffed her hair dramatically.

Even going slow it only took twenty minutes to reach the pier serving the bar. He already heard the music and boisterous patrons. He cut the motor and helped her exit safely; boats weren’t designed for high heels.

Rose looked up and down the line of boat slips and shoreline. “Where’s her sign?”

“She doesn’t have one. We’d rather random humans didn’t wonder in. Mates are more than welcome, but the occasional human to happen upon the bar isn’t very well received.”

He led her to an open table. “I’ll get us drinks, would you like wine or a whiskey Coke?”

“A whiskey Coke sounds great.” Her eyes were bright with excitement as she checked out the crowd.

He squeezed into an open spot at the bar and waved over his cousin. “Julia! How are you, cher?”

“Oh, mon dieu! Simon, it’s so good to see you. I heard you found your mate.”

“I did.” He gestured to their table. “Rose is seated right there, stop over if you get a break.”

“Oh, elle est de toute beauté. You’re a lucky man, cuz.”

“Don’t I know it.” He grinned. “Can I get a Whiskey Coke and a beer?”

He turned his back to the bar to check on Rose. Simon’s breath caught as she unconsciously moistened her lip with the tip of her pink tongue. That mouth was made for sin, with its plush lower lip. He imagined her mouth doing wicked things to a certain part of his anatomy. Blood thrummed in his veins.  Simon turned to inconspicuously adjust himself, his faded jeans were suddenly way too tight. Her intoxicating scent of coffee and cinnamon rolls licked at his groin even from across the room. He wanted to rub himself all over her, saturating her with his scent whenever they were in public. His wolf wouldn’t be satisfied until they were mated.

Gazing at her across the room his blood surged, he imagined her naked on his bed, her thighs parted in invitation. He lowered his head and tasted her passion. Loving her long into the night, her excited cries entwining with his hoarse groans as they made the bed shudder and shake. He shook his head. He really needed to get control of his randy thoughts. This was date night and he would show her a good time away from his bed for once. Down boy, he snarled at his wolf. When he glanced at her again she was snickering and shaking her head at him. He must be imagining loudly.

“Here you go, no charge, and congratulations, Simon.” Julia rapped her knuckles on the bar top before she turned her attention to making another customer’s drink. She was very busy, so he left her to it. He’d barely taken his seat when the band took the stage for another set. He stood and held his hand out to Rose. “May I have this dance?”

“Why, yes, you may,” she said playing along.

Simon held her close enough to see the sparkles in her blue eyes. He loved the way her gaze lit up when she was happy. But his wolf itched to see her eyes dazed with passion as he made love to her, and then sated and sleepy afterwards. For now holding her on the dance floor would do. Rose’s intoxicating fragrance surrounded him, teasing his senses. He was in heaven.

He cupped her cheek with a large, warm palm. “I’m so happy you moved into our house, Rose. Having you in my arms makes me the luckiest man in the world.” The moment she agreed to move to his house he’d called it their home. His glowing blue eyes regarded her with a tenderness that made her breath hitch.

She tightened her arms around his neck, urging his face closer to hers. “I didn’t want to go back to Anna’s, to an empty bed anymore,” she told him. “If you really plan to have me as your mate, it only made sense.”

“Just say the word and I’m yours completely. Forever.” He smiled, then dipped his head, kissed her deeply and nuzzled her.

Someone is out to destroy the Le Beau family and will use any means necessary to see it done.

With Simon returning from his tour in the marines, physically and mentally drained, he is unable to shift from his wolf form to his human form. Anna, Cade’s mate, begins to use her gift to heal him. The progress is slow but steady until Rose enters the picture and Simon knows he has met his other half, his mate, and begins to help in the healing process.

What happens when Rose goes missing? Will the Le Beau’s find her in time to save her life, and Simon’s?

V.A. Dold has once again written characters that I can sink my teeth into. Simon and Rose’s story is every bit as intriguing and romantic as Cade and Anna’s story in Cade. Simon and Cade can both be read as stand alone novels, but I love the continuity of the story when read as a series.

Join me once again as I pant for more of the Le Beau brothers and the next novel from V. A. Dold. I highly recommend you pick this book up and don’t put it down until you’ve read it all the way through.

Barnes and Noble:

The elevator opens up to a small desk just outside a set of large wooden double doors. Jennifer smiles at me as I step out of the elevator. Her sleek blonde hair is pulled back into a tight bun, and she wears a black skirt suit. Mr. Harder has a thing for blondes. Luckily, I have a head of unruly black, wavy hair. It’s reassuring knowing that I was most likely not hired on for some sick, perverted idea of his. The man could be a pig, but he is the best businessman out there. Jennifer nods at me as I walk past her desk and push open one of the doors. The door swings inward into a large office with nothing but windows overlooking the bustling city below. Near the furthest wall is a large modern desk with steel legs curved into arches and a glass tabletop. The oversized, overstuffed leather chair behind the desk is facing towards the window, blocking my view of the man.

“Mr. Harder.” He doesn’t turn around. I clear my throat and take a deep breath. “Mr. Harder, I really appreciate the opportunity you have given me to work for your company, but my particular skills would best serve you and the company outside of the Romance department. Each query letter I read leaves me wanting more, and I fear that we’ve lost a number of potential authors due to my misplaced skills. I believe a transfer to Horror and Thriller would serve the company best as my talents lay in that area.”

The words spill out of my mouth in a frantic rant. When I finish, I stand glued to the floor, waiting for what is about to come. Nothing. The room is quiet. My body is shaking, and I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I really just said all of that to Mr. Harder like that. I probably just secured my name at the top of the next-to-go list. I am finally able to move and turn to leave. I might as well start packing up my office now, what little I do have in there. “What is it about Romance that you don’t like?” The voice doesn’t belong to Mr. Harder. The leather chair turns around and reveals that it is definitely not him, but a much younger, more handsome man.

“I-I-I’m sorry,” I stutter. “I thought you were Mr. Harder.”

“Of course you did.” The man stands up, walks around the desk, and leans back on it with his arms supporting him. He crosses his legs out in front of him, and he smiles. His is the kind of smile that is utterly alluring, one that melts a girl’s heart and sweeps her off her feet. He’s gorgeous, with his dark brown hair and nearly black eyes, and he knows it. His white button up dress shirt tightens around his chest with his arms extending behind him, showing off the curves of his muscles. His black dress pants aren’t tight in the way that he should be humiliated but rather in a way so that they conform to his legs. I’m sure the view from behind is just as nice as the view from the front. “So…what about Romance novels is it that you don’t like?”

My heart flutters. His voice is smooth and deep, one I could sit and listen to for hours. What is going on with me? No man has this kind of effect on me. Not anymore. “I just don’t,” I say sharply.

“I see.” His smile falters for a moment before returning to full-wattage once more. “Care to elaborate?”

For some reason, I feel compelled to do just that. “The plot is the same in every book.” I glance away. My heart is beating rapidly just looking at him, and I can’t let him get under my skin. I’m a girl with a list that has to be followed down to the very last bullet point and I can’t be bothered by the likes of a man like him. “Boy-meets-girl, girl-meets-boy, one has a dark past that makes them feel they are unworthy of love. The two endure a long challenging road, facing inner demons. Eventually, everything turns out alright, and they find the love that they didn’t even know they were searching for.”

The words sound cold and bitter.

“That’s the beauty of it, though, isn’t it? That’s what keeps the readers coming back for more, time and time again.” He sounds so sure of himself.

“What?” I snap my head back towards him. “For what? A happy ending? One that doesn’t truly exist. One that everyone in this world secretly hopes happens for them. It’s a bunch of crap. It’s just fiction, not the real world.” I stare into his eyes as if to prove to him I mean every word I say. “Life isn’t like any of the Romance books. There are no happy endings. Nothing ever turns out the way anyone plans. At least, not in my world.”

“Ah, I get it,” he murmurs, causing me to pause. To my dismay, he pushes off the desk and crosses the distance between us in four long strides. Stopping just in front of me, he brushes back a strand of my wild, black hair. His touch causes me to jump, but I refuse to pull away. The man is standing too close, close enough to smell the rich scent of his cologne and to notice the stubble on his chin. He leans forward, close to my ear. A chill runs down my spine as his breath caresses my face. “Tell me, who was it that broke your heart?”

I turn away, walking as fast as I can without glancing back over my shoulder. He’s struck a nerve. I don’t know how he did it. I don’t know how he figured it out so quickly, but he did. I need to get out of here as quickly as I can. With my head hanging low, I can’t see where I am walking and walk right into someone. I look up and find Mr. Harder standing in front of me. “Oh my, I didn’t see you there,” I say quickly. “I’m sorry.”

“That’s quite alright, my dear,” he says in his deep voice. “I see you met my nephew, Reid, my brother’s son. He’s just come back from overseeing our branch across the Atlantic for the last four years.”

Of course, it has to be his nephew. Though my boss has salt and pepper hair and green eyes, I can see a bit of resemblance between the two of them. My face heats up. and I am sure that it is beat red by now. “I’m a lucky man to have met such a bold and beautiful woman,” Reid chimes in.

I glance over at him only to find he is now standing right beside me, grinning wider than before, if that’s even possible. Irritation courses through my body at the sight of his smile. I do my best to grin at Mr. Harder. “Your nephew was quite enchanting.” Irritating is more like it. I still want to know how he figured out so quickly something that I have been working hard to keep hidden. I am not an open book or anything. I don’t mope around, acting like a woman who has had her heart stomped on, even if it was six years ago. Something about the man standing beside me that sets my veins on fire.

“So, what can we do for you, Lisa?” Harder Senior asks.

I groan inwardly. “It’s Liza,” I say softly.

“What was that dear?” Mr. Harder raises an eyebrow and stares at me curiously. I can feel the heat of Reid’s eyes on me. My chest tightens, and I struggle to breathe. He is standing so close that when he makes the slightest movement his arm brushes against mine and sends electricity dancing through my veins. I. Need. To. Get. Out. Of. Here. Now.

“It’s Liza,” I say louder. I clear my throat and take a breath.

I feel Reid wrap his arm around my shoulder, the touch startling me, and I hear him laugh softly. He drops his arm and I don’t dare look at him. “Liza here came to talk to you about working in Romance,” he says.

“Oh, really?” My boss raises his eyebrow again. “Now remember, Liza, it’s going to take some time, but I think that you will find it a very good fit for you there.”

“Yeah, who doesn’t like a good story about love and overcoming your demons?”

I glare at Reid. Did he really just use my own words against me? I feel the heat rushing to my face again, only this time it’s anger I’m feeling rather than embarrassment.

“Besides, I’m sure Reid here will be able to make the transition smoother from here on out.” I glance at Mr. Harder. I must have seemed scared, because he laughs loudly. “Don’t fret, darling; you are in capable hands.” Still confused, my eyes dart back and forth between the two men. What is he talking about? “Silly me! I forgot to mention that Reid is filling the open Senior Agent position on your floor.”

Oh boy, Harder’s nephew is my new boss, which means I will be seeing him every day. This is not good, not good at all. I need to get out of here quickly, by any means necessary.

“So what do you say, Liza? You up for giving Romance another chance?” Reid flashes his million dollar smile as my heart flutters and my knees feel like jelly.

“What choice do I have?” I barely manage to say.

“That’s the spirit.” Mr. Harder says as he claps a hand down on my shoulder. I smile softly, tell them I had to get back to work, and walk as quickly as I can out of his office.

I love reading a good thriller and when you throw some romance in, you’ve created a book that I just can’t resist. I also fancy myself a great solver of the “whodunit” genre! If I Say Yes by Brandy Jellum kept me frustrated as I tried to guess who the bad guy of this story would turn out to be and kept hitting the proverbial brick wall! Brandy Jellum has written a romantic suspense novel that deserves a place in the annals of romantic suspense history. I didn’t figure out who it was until Brandy literally spelled it out for me at the end! Boy, do I feel like an amateur now.  I am ashamed of myself for the thoughts that passed through my mind about the poor innocents!

If you are a fan of good romance and a lover of sleuthing you will truly enjoy this novel. The characters are well developed, full of intrigue and endearing at the same time!

I highly recommend If I Say Yes by Brandy Jellum and give it

Mann, Marni: Pulled Beneath, Bar Harbor Series #1

Pulled-Beneath-Marni-Mann (1)

Pulled Beneath

Bar Harbor Series #1

By: Marni Mann

Released March 18th, 2014

What happens when you uncover years of secrets and find out everything you thought to be true was a lie?

Drew Stevens finds her world turned upside down when her parents are brutally murdered. Soon after, she learns she inherited a property in Bar Harbor, Maine from recently deceased grandparents that she believed had died when she was a baby.

Drew travels north to settle her grandparents’ estate, but finds more questions than answers as the truth starts unraveling. What she didn’t expect to find was Saint, whose reputation was as tumultuous as his past. But the very thing that brought them together was the same thing that kept them emotionally caged.

With Saint’s scars so deep and Drew’s so fresh, can the pair heal from their painful wounds or will they be pulled beneath the darkness of their pasts?

Saint’s nose grazed my neck and cheek. “I can smell Brady all over you,” he said.

“You went to Caleb’s house, didn’t you?”

“Who’s Caleb?”

That name didn’t sound familiar. But even if it had, I couldn’t concentrate on anything besides his mouth. The fullness of his lips. The wetness that I wanted to somehow seep into my own mouth. His warmth was enveloping me.

“It’s the brown house in the woods, the one I’m pretty sure was having a party tonight.” His mouth closed and he exhaled through his nose. He was several inches taller than I was, and his down-pointing gaze sent his breath straight into my mouth. I swallowed it like it was smoke. There was a hint of salt in his taste along with something fresh and sweet like mint candy. “I bet Gabe found you before everyone else.” He dipped the bottom half of his face into the water, submerging the parts I was having a hard time dragging my eyes away from. “I imagine Brady hated that. And I bet the two of them got into a fight.”

“How do you know?”

“You’re new here and no one’s been able to touch you yet; I know how they think.” One of his hands gripped the rock above my head; the other hugged my waist, clenching my skin as he spoke. “I bet you were wearing something tight, too…teasing them with your body.” My legs lifted on their own and wrapped around him. He didn’t flinch. He didn’t stop me or pull away. “I can’t really blame Gabe for wanting you, can I? Or Brady since he was just protecting what’s his.”

Did he really mean that? Or was he trying to get a reaction out of me?

“I’m not his…or anyone else’s.” His eyes gleamed from my words. “And you can’t smell Brady,” I added, “because he wasn’t all over me.”

His nose skimmed my chin. “I can smell his weed on your skin.” Then it raised an inch higher and scraped over the edge of my lips. “And his beer on your breath.”

“Don’t judge me just because I needed a break. We can’t all be Saints…” He hardly looked like one, and he wasn’t giving off an innocent vibe despite the lack of booze in his scent. Still, I couldn’t help but feel like I had done something wrong tonight. When I went to pull away, to put some space between us, my legs tightened instead. My body was responding on its own, regardless of what my mind was telling it to do.

“There’s no judgment coming from me. I’ve been where you are so I know what it’s like to find something that makes you feel normal… and to want more of it.” I remembered the conversation we’d had about this. I didn’t know why we were talking about it again or why my actions even mattered to him. But there was a part of me that felt the need to explain myself. I didn’t want him to get the wrong idea. I wasn’t a pothead, and I definitely didn’t have a drinking problem. “Just because I can relate,” he said, “doesn’t mean I’m going to let you go swimming tonight.”

“You say you’ve been where I am…how do you even know where that is?”

I didn’t even know what this period of my life was or how I was supposed to overcome this overwhelming pain and move on. The weed helped; so did the alcohol that was still warming my chest. But it wasn’t enough.

Nothing was enough at this point.

“How do I know?” he echoed. “I just do.” His voice was soft but demanding. His fingers had found my waist again and held me in such a strong grip that my emotions began unraveling. Despite my resistance, I was being pulled toward him. I was opening in a way I had never done before. And I was doing it for a stranger. A sexy stranger.

I had witnessed his pain in motion; the way he had stroked over the sea fueled by something so similar to what fueled me. The agony he couldn’t hide from his caramel-colored eyes. I was drawn to whatever was broken in him, probably in the same way he was drawn to what was broken in me.

He continued speaking…I could feel his words because his breath kept hitting my face and his sound floated into my ears. But I wasn’t listening. I couldn’t. My brain had gone to that place…where all I saw was the blood and all I heard was my parents’ screams. My secrets were on the verge of being revealed, and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

Sugar Babies

by Mickey J. Corrigan

MEDIA KIT Sugar_Babies_500x750

A sugar daddy can make your money woes disappear. But for sugar babies, life is like a chocolate-covered time bomb: sweet on the outside, deadly on the inside.

Young, beautiful, and hungry, Esme, Maire, and Niki want what every woman wants: love, work, safe shelter, the bills paid off, a diamond-studded Rolex and a two-bedroom condo with an ocean view. Working as sugar babies seems to be the only way to make this happen. But the sugar life is more dangerous than they thought.

A few minutes before midnight, Esme stepped out onto the high-rise balcony and made a phone call. She felt lush, swollen, and she smelled of bed.

“The eagle has landed,” she whispered.

Jake’s cell was off, an annoying new habit he’d picked up. Which probably indicated he was in bed with some floozy from the bar. Otherwise he’d answer her call, no matter what time it was.

The wind off the ocean was cool on her bare skin. She could always call the bar directly, ask them to page him. She looked down at the black sea, the sand a luscious frosting, creamy white in the moonlight. Jake would kill her if she embarrassed him like that. She’d have to enjoy the glorious moment alone.

She’d made it! Months of nothing but strike outs and then, suddenly, a triple! Maybe even a home run! One minute she was feeling hopeless. The next, she had a sugar job, she’d scored a sugar daddy, and she’d been ushered into the sugar life. Yes!

Esme laughed out loud. Here she was, in the heart of Coconut Island, on millionaires’ row. In fact, she was standing on the terrace of one of the fancy condo buildings she’d lusted after on so many failed nights, depressing nights she’d found herself staring out a dirty bus window. Now here she was, deep breathing the sea air on the patio of a luxury condo building! She’d done even better than she’d hoped or imagined.

The Long and the Long of It

by Mickey J. Corrigan

Author of Sugar Babies (Champagne Books, 2013)

I’ve been publishing books for a long time now. I hate to say how many years, so I won’t. But I will say that even though I’ve seen some aspects of publishing change dramatically, other things have remained the same.

For example, it is still a massive bummer to get a rejection from a publisher. Readers assume once you have a publisher, they’ll accept everything you send their way. This isn’t true, and having a long list of books in print is no guarantee that anyone else will take your newest creation. Some books nobody wants to publish. No matter what your publishing history looks like.

Unless you are J.K. Rowling. Which, or course, most of us are not.

Another aspect of publishing that has yet to change is the pace. It’s always taken a long time to hear back on submissions, and now, in the digital age, it still takes weeks or month for a publisher to decide on your work. The bigger the house, the longer the wait. This encourages new writers to self-publish. After all, your book could be in print and selling before you even get a rejection slip in your inbox.

But what if you receive an acceptance letter?

Then…the wait continues. Because even when a publisher does contract you, it still seems to take forever before your book is released. This holds true for most digital publishers as well as the print presses. This is because your manuscript has to go to the bottom of the pile and edge its way slowly upward until it sits on top of your editor’s desk. You have to wait your turn. And the bigger the press, the longer that takes.

Finally, you receive manuscript edits from your editor. Hooray! But this is only round one. Depending on what needs to be done to polish your manuscript, there might be one, two, or more rounds of edits before the manuscript moves on to the next stage of editing. And still, your job is not done. You will be looking over the line edits. Then you will look at the galleys.

Do I have to say here that the editing process is a long one? Being able to email your manuscript back and forth with your editor does speed up the process. We used to have to trade editing rounds through the U.S. mail.

After you and your editor have selected the cover design and agreed on the back copy, your book will be assigned a release date. Sometime in the future. Possibly way in the future.

The publishing process used to frustrate me. I spent a lot of stressful hours, days, weeks and months worrying about my books in press. What a waste of energy! If I knew then what I know now, I would have used the time to prepare promotional campaigns and conduct research for the next book. Because there is serious lag time between the completion of a manuscript and holding the book in your hand—or seeing it on your screen.

But this is the way publishing works. Just like honing your craft to improve your writing, the publishing process is an art. And it takes time.

Being a saint helps when you are waiting for a book to be released. I am not a saint. But I do think the process is worthwhile. With the help of a publisher, the errors in my manuscript are corrected. Rough edges are smoothed. The cover is artfully designed. Skilled professionals have given me feedback and shared their expertise. So when my book is finally released, I can feel confident it is the very best I could do.

As for what has changed in publishing during my years as an author, that’s a topic for another blog post. But as every writer knows, now you have the option to do it all yourself. It’s fast, cheap and easy. So, if you just can’t wait any longer, you can always choose to be your own publisher. I’m always thinking about doing that myself.
