Vanessa and Zander Roth are good at lying. Their whole life is a giant web of deceit made in an effort to conceal the deadly secrets that plague their family.
Zander will do anything to forget his mistakes, including pushing everyone away. He was barely surviving in his self-forced solitude before Ivy Guerra entered his life. The new girl in school, with her pink-striped hair and unyielding curiosity, incites something wicked inside Zander that can only be blamed on his family genes. Now Zander is forced to fight an internal war and make a choice between loving Ivy Guerra and killing her.
Vanessa wants nothing more than to shed the strange powers she wields and be normal. Because if Van were normal, she’d be able to have normal things… Like a relationship with the boy she’s been secretly in love with for years. Unfortunately, her life is anything but ordinary. That boy who owns her heart just happens to be her brother’s kryptonite and a potential liability for her entire family. When choices between love and family loyalty have to be made, Van finds herself faced with an impossible decision.
As if the Roth family needs anything more to worry about, a vicious plot to expose Van and Zander for what they are is uncovered. When it becomes apparent that someone close to them is at the center of this devious plan, the fight to maintain control and keep their cover ensues. It’s a seemingly impossible battle because something is causing their powers to stir stronger than ever before… and it won’t stop until Van and Zander give in to their wicked hunger.
It is my pleasure to welcome DelSheree Gladden to Room With Books.
Ms. Gladden, would you please describe Wicked Hunger in 5 (five) words.
Hunger changes everything, especially love.
What inspired the idea of Wicked Hunger?
It was actually two words from a Jim Butcher novel. He described one of his characters as having “godling hunger” and it made me wonder what it would do to a person to be born with a strange hunger for pain and suffering that they didn’t understand. Would it lead a person to dark places, or to do something amazing?
When you start writing, do you outline the story or do your characters dictate what will happen?
Usually, I let the characters dictate the story because I feel like I get a more natural flow that way. Even when I do outline, it’s only one or two sentences per chapter. I like to know my goal for the chapter, but I let the characters decide how to get there.
And do you ever have arguments with your characters? If you do, who usually wins?
Haha, yes! All the time! The characters pretty much always win. By the time I get to know them well enough to get into an argument, they know who they are and refuse to budge. I’ve had to change whole sections of storyline after realizing it just won’t fly with one of my characters.
What do you dread or enjoy the most about writing?
The end. I get so annoyed, as a reader, when I make it through a whole book just to hit a weak ending. I don’t want any of my books to end flat, so I agonize over the endings.
What is something about you, Ms. Gladden, which your readers would be surprised to know?
Even though I have a character named Ketchup in Wicked Hunger, I can’t stand eating ketchup. It’s just gross.
What is one of your favorite quotes?
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” ― Albert Einstein
What was it that prompted you to begin writing?
I have always loved books, and being extremely shy as a kid made it hard for me to ever express myself. I would literally almost have a panic attack in class if I had to answer a question. I felt like I had things to say, though, and writing became the way to do that.
Is there special music that inspires your writing?
When I write, I love to listen to bands like The Oh Hellos, Mumford and Sons, Airborne Toxic Event, and Of Monsters and Men. I love music that tells a story and has a lot of passion and emotion in it. These bands definitely have that. They get me in the right frame of mind for writing.
What are you working on right now?
My two main projects are the third book in the Someone Wicked This Way Comes Series, Wicked Glory, and the second book in my Date Shark Series, which still doesn’t have a title. When I need a break from those, I’m working on Invincible (Aerling Series #3), and Oracle Lost (Escaping Fate #3). For some reason I write better when I have a bunch of projects going on at once.
What is your favorite breakfast? Strawberry blintzes
What is your favorite color? Orange
What is the last thing you Googled? How to get Key-find malware off my computer. It’s not easy to do!
What is your guilty pleasure? Ghirardelli dark chocolate with sea salt. It’s delicious!
What is the first thing you reach for when you are stressed? Chocolate!
Where can your loyal readers, both old and new, find you on the World Wide Web? Finding me is pretty easy because I seem to be the only DelSheree out there, but here are the links to make it easy!
Thank you for taking the time away from writing for this interview. I appreciate your time and thank you for allowing Room With Books to participate in your tour.
