What’s a girl to do when her best friend is making a mistake? Stop him, of course.
College sophomore Emily Dilbert has been best friends with Dylan Chamberlain since they were kids. All she wants is for him to be happy and she knows him better than anyone. That’s why when she finds an engagement ring in his backpack she has to stop him from marrying the wrong girl.
Dylan Chamberlain has been in love with his brother’s girlfriend, Emily, since the second grade. When his brother asks for help planning a surprise proposal, Dylan knows it’s time to bury his feelings and finally let Emily go. Too bad his heart refuses to cooperate.
All of Emily’s attempts to lure Dylan away from his girlfriend fail, forcing her to turn up the heat on their friendship. Will Dylan reveal his long-buried secret and tell Emily how he feels? Or will Emily be forced to use any means necessary to show him the error of his ways?
A Description of A Kiss by Design using the letters from the book title:
A: Agonizing: Once Emily realizes she has feelings for Dylan, her boyfriend’s brother, she must make an agonizing decision: break up with Zach and pursue a relationship with Dylan or deny her newly realized feelings so as not to create a mess within his family. Both paths lead someone to heartbreak and Emily despises confrontation.
K: Kaleidoscopic: A Kiss by Design is filled with a variety of characters and they all play an important part of the story. Emily, Dylan and Zach are the main characters, but so are Emily’s roommates Kayla, Reagan, and Shelby. Dylan’s roommate Mike is introduced, as well as Dylan and Zach’s younger brother, Nick. Each of these characters help Emily and Dylan navigate their long and winding route to romance and ultimately to love.
B: Believable: When I started writing A Kiss by Design, I thought it would be a fun romp filled with young adult angst. When I got to the point where Emily had to make a decision between the brothers and Dylan was faced with stealing his brother’s girlfriend, the story took a different turn. This was serious business with far reaching consequences for Dylan, Zach, and their entire family. Zach wasn’t just some bad boyfriend who took Emily for granted, he was Dylan’s brother and, and Zach says in the book, “Blood’s blood.” I don’t ever want to write a story where the reader will fling the book down and think, “that would never happen.” I hate reading stories like that, so I was determined not to write one. The stakes for these lovers was very high, especially since this is a series book featuring all three Chamberlain brothers.
D: Dramatic: Change is never easy and break ups create a lot of change. Emily has been dating Zach for almost five years and his family has become her family in many ways. If she chooses Dylan, his family will hate her and she and Zach will have a very hard time transitioning their relationship into a friendship.
