GENRE: contemporary romance

About the Book

Capricorn Slate Claybourne, an ex-Seal and former sniper who has seen and done things in country that no man should endure, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry Island, desperate for the mundane, everyday routines he once wanted to escape.

A broken, soul-dead man unable to be around people, his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.

But animated Aries Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be, when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists, and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.

First she crashes into him at the island’s holiday Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment. Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way.

But when a furious December nor’easter traps them together at Pieberry House, will Slate and Holly overcome their pasts and discover they are two halves of a whole?

“Do we have to play this idiotic game?”

“We do. And it’s not idiotic. You’d be surprised how telling astrology can be. Was I wrong about you?”

“Well…” He paused, and the silence between them lengthened.

“I’ll take that as a no.” She grinned at him.

“All right.” Again he said nothing more, and she wanted to shake him until a confession fell out of his mouth.

“Chatty, too.” She tapped her foot and crossed her arms over her chest, drawing his gaze to her breasts. But he still didn’t take the hint. She groaned. Such a man. “Eyes up, sailor.” She flicked a finger in the vicinity of his chin until he raised his focus. “Birthday?” she demanded again.

“In a couple of weeks,” he said at last, the admission apparently so difficult it might have been wrung from him on pain of torture.

She snapped her fingers. “Knew it. Do I have you sussed or not?” “Do you?”

“I mean, we’re completely incompatible. Like oil and water. The tortoise and the hare.”

He shot her another incendiary look, and then glanced at the exit as if contemplating how fast he could make his getaway.

“Oh, wait. So I ruffled your feathers a little, and you’re not going to help me now?”

Instead of replying, he seized her fiercely by the arm and spun her around, dragging her into him until he’d caught her up against his rock-hard chest. Then his mouth came down on hers, hard, harsh, and demanding. Giving absolutely no quarter. Shocking her into utter and complete silence.

Whoa! I thought this man lacked spontaneity? Holy simmering cinnamon buns!

Q&A With Author

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Taryn Kincaid author of HER CAPTAIN.

Hi, Taryn. Thank you for agreeing to this interview. Please tell us a little about yourself and your background.

Thanks for having me guest today! I’m so excited to spread the word about HER CAPTAIN. So….about me…well, I had to retire from Her Majesty’s Secret Service due to an unfortunate incident with James Bond. Just as an FYI: Don’t ever service him a Cosmopolitan, Appletini or Sex on the Beach He may enjoy having sex on the beach but apparently he prefers his drinks shaken, not stirred. Or something like that. I then attended CIA school (that would be Culinary Institute of America, not the agency you might have segued to from my discussion of 007), but unfortunately had to drop out because I never quite got the hang of cracking an egg with one hand. Anyway, I now live and work not far from Spooky Sleepy Hollow, where things go bump in the night and whimsical winds swirl down from the mountains through the storied and mystical Hudson Valley.

What were you like at school?

I told my friends outlandish stories. Once, I invented a much older brother who was on the run. No one had ever seen or heard of him. My friends reported this to their mother, who then called my mother, all sympathetic and concerned about the mysterious sibling. I received a stern talking to. Other than that, I was pretty much a “goody two-shoes,” as my actual younger brother liked to call me.

Were you good at English?

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I’d like to be able to keep writing books that I enjoy and that readers enjoy. And seeing the covers for the first time.

Which writers inspire you?

Lots. I really love the way Michael Chabon writes. In the romance field, J.R. Ward, Nalini Singh, Jayne Ann Krentz and too many others to mention.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

He’s an ex-Navy SEAL and he’s put in a lot of time as a sniper. He suffers for it sometimes at night. He’s also a Capricorn, which makes him highly dependable, responsible, and loyal. Hard exterior, soft gooey interior. Oh, and he’s a totally HOT hunk.

What are you working on currently?

I’m working on another paranormal romance, a wolf shifter book for Decadent Publishing’s popular Black Hills Wolves multi-author series. My first, WOLF’S SONG, came out earlier this year, my second, ANOTHER CHANCE, is scheduled for a February release. I’m working on the third, SAFE AT HOME. The heroes of WOLF’S SONG and ANOTHER CHANCE are brothers; the heroine of SAFE AT HOME is their sister.

Which actress would you like to see playing the lead character from MY CAPTAIN?

I think Jennifer Lawrence (with red hair) would be an awesome, spot-on Holly Harper, the bubbly Aries heroine of HER CAPTAIN.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

I have an extremely demanding day job, so my writing time is essentially limited to when I have time on weekends.

Where do your ideas come from?

They seem to come most when I’m driving or in the shower. Anything can be inspiration. Driving past rest stops on the New York State Thruway, inspired BLIZZARD, my short, HOT contemporary with a twist. Billy Joel’s song and video, Downeaster Alexa, somewhat inspired HER CAPTAIN. So did American sniper to some extent. Sometimes I take a bit of inspiration from here, a bit from there. I had to have a character whose zodiac sign was Capricorn, and believe it or not I was thinking of the title, Captain January, first…which is actually a Shirley Temple movie! HER CAPTAIN is nothing like any of those, really!

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I just go with the flow. With HER CAPTAIN, a main character had to be a Capricorn, as I mentioned above. With the Black Hills Wolves stories, since it’s a multi-authored series, there are a few characters (such as the pack Alpha) and settings that are in all the books.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

For me, it’s the time constraint.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors.

I do read a lot. I think I mentioned my some of my favorite authors above. Also, I know a lot of authors and I try to read their releases if I can.

For your own reading, do you prefer eBooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

Ebooks. I never thought I’d give up paper books. But once I really started reading on the Kindle, I couldn’t go back. I also love being able to “one-click” and to “pre-order” and have the book “magically” arrive on the reader on release day!

What books are you reading presently?

I am reading through the Black Hills Wolves series. I had been caught up for a while, but now there have been so many releases that I’m playing catch up!

Tell us about the cover and how it came about.

I don’t have much input into the covers. That’s up to the publisher. I fill out a character sheet with the hero and heroine’s eye and hair coloring, note any other characteristics or parts of the story I think relevant, but the creation is up to the artist.

Who designed your book cover?

I’ve had phenomenal luck with cover artists. They’ve all been great and my covers are awesome.

Do you have a trailer or do you intend to create one?

Do you think that giving books away free works and why?

Yes, sometimes. I’ve gotten lots of new readers that way.

How do you relax?

Reading, TV.

What is your favorite quote?

“I’m shocked, SHOCKED to find gambling is going on in here.”  It’s from Casablanca, but I use it whenever I want to convey a sentiment along the lines of “Gee, isn’t THAT a surprise.”

What is your favorite movie?

Casablanca. I’ve seen it so many times I have the lines memorized. And the movie has some of the greatest lines in the world. It should. Some phenomenal writers, like William Faulkner, credited and uncredited, wrote them.

How can readers discover more about you and you work?

From my website, my blog, or my Amazon and Goodreads pages. I’m also on Facebook and have an author page on Facebook, too. I’m all over the place, really! (The links are below)

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview. I love getting to know a bit about who is behind the novels I love to read.
