Lindsey Hilliard flees her charmed life in New York, searching for answers after her fiancé’s betrayal fills her with self-doubt. Unfortunately, her rented Malibu home is next door to Levi Hardy, the sexy but insufferable man who humiliated her years ago.
Hardened by a grim past he keeps concealed, Levi prefers maintaining a comfortable distance from folks, especially a nosy princess like Lindsey. But then a motorcycle collision brings him to his knees, forcing him to accept her assistance with his recovery. Sparks begin to fly when the woman who doesn’t believe in herself teaches the cynic how to have faith in others. Levi realizes his body will recover, but his heart won’t if Lindsey returns to the ex who wants her back.
In the biggest gamble of his life, Levi teaches her to trust her own voice, and hopes she’ll use it to say good-bye to her past and hello to a future with him.
Heroes with a Dark Side: the Thin Line Between Scary and Sexy
Question: “Is it possible to be turned-on and afraid at the same time?” – Lindsey Hilliard, heroine, IN THE CARDS.
Short Answer: Yes.
At least, it is if you’re anything like me, who perpetually fell for the type of boy who had an edge about him. That mysterious, slightly dangerous, entirely sexy dark side I just could not resist despite all my instincts.
Naturally, Lindsey, an open-hearted people-pleaser, falls victim to that kind of desire when fate has her crossing paths with Levi Hardy not once, but twice in her lifetime.
Born to a con man and a mother who abandoned him before his tenth birthday, Levi spent his youth mastering poker while living on the run with his dad. When his father was preying on unsuspecting marks, Levi would hole up in motel rooms reading and preparing for the day when he could break free from his unsavory lifestyle. But growing up in constant fear of losing one’s remaining parent to prison—not to mention being taught to trust no one—takes a toll on the psyche.
Enter Lindsey. The first time they meet, she’s a guest at the resort where he’s working as a bartender. At barely eighteen, she’s nursing a schoolgirl crush on him until they actually talk, at which point things turn south for both of them. Years later, fate reunites them, and an accident forces Levi to rely on Lindsey for help during his recovery.
Despite his best efforts to protect himself by pushing her away, his bark is no match for her optimism, determination, and curiosity. Although unaccustomed to someone as cynical and wary as Levi, Lindsey senses something special beneath his gruff exterior. His self-reliance, work ethic, discipline, and unexpected tenderness give her a glimpse of a softer side of the intriguing and incredibly attractive, if somewhat mysterious, man. Gradually her tireless nurturing and steadfast friendship enables him to lower his guard and confide his darkest secrets.
And isn’t that the draw of an enigmatic man? That deep down he’s looking for love to rescue him from isolation, and that the right woman will help him become the man he wants to be? Maybe that’s just a fantasy in my head, but if you agree with me, then you might enjoy how these two characters’ journeys of self-discovery lead them to find true love.
