EXTRACTEDWelcome to the war.

The Tesla Institute is a premier academy that trains young time travelers called Rifters. Created by Nicola Tesla, the Institute seeks special individuals who can help preserve the time stream against those who try to alter it.

The Hollows is a rogue band of Rifters who tear through time with little care for the consequences. Armed with their own group of lost teens–their only desire to find Tesla and put an end to his corruption of the time stream.

Torn between them are Lex and Ember, two Rifters with no memories of their life before joining the time war.

When Lex’s girlfriend dies during a mission, the only way he can save her is to retrieve the Dox, a piece of tech which allows Rifters to re-enter their own timeline without collapsing the time stream. But the Dox is hidden deep within the Telsa Institute, which means Lex must go into the enemy camp. It’s there he meets Ember, and the past that was stolen from them both comes flooding back.

Now armed with the truth of who they are, Lex and Ember must work together to save the future before the battle for time destroys them both…again.

Cole, Mariah: Beautiful Failure

Sneak Peek

beautiful failure pre cover reveal 4

If you’re looking for a heartwarming story about a girl who falls deeply in love with a troubled boy who changes her life–a sob story with pretty metaphors and a million ways that’ll tell you how “broken” she is, STOP. Don’t read another word of this.

I’m not that type of girl.

My name is Emerald Anderson and I’m not going to bullshit you: I flunked out of college after my sophomore year, I’ve been fired from every job I’ve ever taken, and I’ve never had a fully functioning relationship in my life.

I wish I could say that I had a cheerleader in my corner, someone who says, “No, Emerald–You’re great and you are good at something!” but I don’t. My grandparents are completely oblivious to my life, and my mother’s dying words to me were “You’re going to end up just like me one day. A beautiful nothing.”

She was right.

As I decide to start my life over and take two jobs that will forever change me–one from the inside, and one from the outside, I keep my mother’s words close to my heart so I can keep the sexy and mysterious Carter Black away.

He’s the first man who’s ever pursued me, the first man who seems bent on finding out why I am the way I am, but he’s wasting his time.

I’m not broken. I don’t need to be fixed. I’m perfectly fine with being a beautiful failure…

My mother hardly ever lectured or disciplined me, but she did teach me three very important lessons:

1.) “Always put tons of effort into the way you look. You need to be beautiful on the outside, no matter how fucked up you are on the inside. If you ever feel sad or depressed, suck that shit up and add more mascara.”

2.) “Don’t make friends. Make sponsors. If you can’t get anything out of someone or use them for a specific purpose, kick that person out of your life ASAP.”

3.) “Beauty wins over brains every time. Your body will always be your most important asset. Remember that.”

Moore, Nicole Andrews: Shards of My Heart

When I took the vows for better or worse, I meant them.  Then I started to wonder if there was a limit as to how much worse I was supposed to endure.  Am I supposed to stay if worse means that me and my daughter are in danger?  What if the worse was because of a mental illness?  When is enough simply too much?
This is a different kind of love story.  Read Nina’s journals for a tale of hope, strength of spirit, and unconditional love.
Shane loved walking around without a shirt on, showing off his muscular physique.  Honestly, I loved seeing him, loved touching his bare skin.  In that moment, he leaned his back against the counter and faced me.  Without thinking, I walked into his open arms, inhaled his scent to imprint it upon my soul, and kissed the broken heart tribal tattoo on his chest.
Shane: Are you trying to heal my broken heart?
Shaking my head, I responded.
me: Nope.  Just loving you.
Shane: Good.  It can’t be fixed.
He looked down and instead of wrapping me up and pulling me closer, he stiffened and stood straight.

Shane: Sometimes, I think you are only attracted to me because you want to fix me.
His demeanor had me tensing up.  Somehow, I knew what I said next was going to be really important.  Shaking my head, I found the words I sought.
me: Baby, until I got to know you, I didn’t even know you were broken.
That softened him.  My words worked.  They were magic.  He admired my ability to communicate, to speak eloquently, to make an impact through simple speech.  Words did not come easily for him.
He held me close.  Bending his head, his chin in my hair, he finally spoke what was clearly bothering him.
Shane: You make me want to be a better man, but I don’t want to change.  What are we going to do about that?
With my chin on his chest, staring up into his pained eyes, I told him the truth.  There was only one way I knew to make this work.
me: I’m going to love you through it.  No matter what, come what may, I promise I’ll love you the best I can with all that I am.
I meant it, too.
Must be he liked my response because within seconds, his lips closed the distance to mine.  That kiss. That love.

The past is never far behind.

Senia Loato’s life has been needled by disappointment, and the wounds that fester go beyond skin deep. She is certain if she puts miles between her and her tainted past, she will somehow outrun it. When she’s offered the chance to leave her island home of Mintang to become an au pair for three boys in Germany, she takes the opportunity to start running.

In Germany, she meets Miina, another au pair. What builds between them is a life-defining friendship, one they will risk everything for.

And soon, they’ll be asked nothing less.

When Miina is betrayed and left stranded, Senia stands by her, risking much more than just her stay in Germany. She also stands to lose rich, handsome, turquoise-eyed Roman Dorenwald, the first man she has allowed into her heart.

But they’re risks worth taking.

Eventually, Senia makes a sacrifice that catapults her back to her past, where she’s forced to draw back the curtain and discover the shocking truth of her history.

EXCERPT:

My muscles tensed up again, and I smoothed the tablecloth, gave myself time to respond. How much could I tell him? If he had read my CV, he’d know I’d worked at the orphanage, but not that I’d also lived there. Did I want him to know? I raised my eyes. Why not? “I grew up in an orphanage, where I later worked as well, for two years. I never met my biological parents.” Why not just leave out the whole adoption part? It would only call for more questions and complicate things.

To my surprise, Roman squeezed my hand, just for a second, but the warmth from his grip remained with me. “I’m sorry to hear that. That explains it. I used to wonder why you had this sad look in your eyes all the time.”

I glanced away. “I do?” I whispered. But then, how would I know? Whatever look I had in my eyes, I’d lived with all my life. I wouldn’t know if it was sad or not.

“Senia,” Roman drew his chair closer to the table, “please look at me. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. I can’t even begin to imagine how it would be, growing up without my parents, even if they can be too controlling sometimes.”

I allowed my glance to meet his again. “Well, having never met mine has made it easier to live without them.”

The waiter placed our food in front of us, halting our conversation. The aroma of Roman’s roasted pork in gravy and that of my beef and pork mingled in the air between us before teasing my nostrils. So easy for the aromas to do—nothing in the air to stop them from embracing. Unlike Roman and I. Between us stood many possible complications that could send a potential relationship toppling before it even started.

Excerpt

This has been a long day!  After hanging out with the girls, I knew better than to schedule this shipment today but I have some sexy new plus size outfits that are sexy yet sophisticated enough to show off the right curves at the right time. Now, its 7PM and I’m sitting here daydreaming about this new lingerie even though I need to get to home.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” this voice says!

Shit, you scared me and who are you calling ma’am?”  I asked.

Good God, I thought to myself as I turned around to see a man that made by mouth fall open.

“I apologize, I didn’t mean to scare you but the door was open and I’ve been trying to get your attention,” he said.  “I forgot one of your boxes on my truck this morning.”

“Oh, that’s fine you can sit it over there and thank you for bringing it back,” I stated.

“No problem. I didn’t want you to be angry with me so I decided to not wait until Monday. My name is Xavier, by the way.”

“Xavier, nice name and it fits you well,” I threw in.

“Thanks, I got it from my dad,” he said.

“Baby, if your dad is as fine as you; he can deliver me anything at any time.”

He laughed and said, “Why does it have to be my dad?”

I replied, “Because you might not be able to handle all this woman.”

He turned to walk away and I thought I had scared him off but when he locked the door and began walking towards me, licking his lips saying, “I might not but I’d sure love to give it a try,” my panties got wet.  Hell, even my nipples got hard.

I began licking my lips and making direct eye contact with him. I was standing there looking good in my black skirt, thigh high boots and low cut shirt and I couldn’t wait until he took it all off.

“Are you sure you can handle this?  I don’t want you to have to quit your job because you’ll be scared to come back,” I said.  He walked over and put his tongue in my mouth which was answer enough for me. He picked me up and believe me when I say; he wasn’t scared to handle this big girl!  Baby, he picked me up so high; I thought I was going to fall but he said “Just relax and enjoy it.”

He placed my back against the wall and wrapped my legs around his head while he was standing. “Shit, Shit, Oh Shit” ….this man licked my lady like it had been months since he’d eaten. Whew, I felt things that I had never felt before. I was so wet that I could not contain myself.  All, I could do was scream out as he licked me clean. He then put me down gently as I pushed him away from me.  My legs felt like jelly but I couldn’t let him see me sweat.  I ordered him to take off my skirt, leaving me with my black see through bra, panties and thigh high boots.

“Come here,” I ordered and he said “Yes ma’am” with a smile on his face. I could see the print of his cock through his work pants and my eyes were screaming OMG, I’m going to enjoy this.

EXCERPT

“Yes, I was supposed to be out of town all weekend. I wasn’t due back until tomorrow evening.”

I sit back on the couch, leaning against the arm rest, facing him so I can watch him when he talks. “Okay, so why are you back? You haven’t answered my other question yet either. Why were you at my house?”

He raises my legs and scoots back on the couch, laying my legs across his lap and starts rubbing, back and forth, up to my knees and back down to my ankles. “Do you want the honest truth or what I think you want to hear?”

Duh! “Honesty, Caleb, always honesty.” I tilt my head sideways, trying to figure out what he is about to tell me.

He turns his head and looks me square in the eyes. “I came back because I saw there was a bad storm getting ready to hit.” Rubs up, then down. “I came back because I know you are terrified of storms.” Rubs up, then down “I came back because I missed you. I came back because during the last two years, I have always been with you during a storm. I went to your house to stay with you, but when I drove up and saw that tree had fallen through your living room, it scared the hell out of me and I had to make sure you were alright.”

There’s something else in his eyes. Something he’s not telling me, but I’m not going to push him on the issue. I haven’t seen that look on his face before and I don’t know what to think about it.

“Thank you, Caleb. Thank you for always being there for me, for always knowing what I need and when I need it. I don’t know what I would do without you in my life.” And I don’t.

 Chapter One

Virginia Templeton arrived at her psychiatrist’s office, ten minutes late as usual. She was always late, as she rather enjoyed a grand entrance. Virginia was beautiful and knew it, tall and graceful, with hips tapering into long, slender legs. A body to die for, as they say. All heads turned when Virginia entered a room; women wanted to be her, and men just wanted her.

She was just as sexy dressed as she was undressed, as she absolutely loved fashion. Her favorite expression was “shop until you drop,” and she did just that. Virginia loved expensive clothes and shoes — oh, how she loved shoes — and accessorized every outfit. She didn’t look at price tags and, luckily, she didn’t need to.

Virginia’s image didn’t allow her to be all smiles or say nice things, as she preferred to play the misunderstood diva and use her good looks for favors. People didn’t cross the line with Virginia often and, when they did, her wrath was like nobody else’s.

Nicholas Waters, her psychiatrist, sat behind his desk, waiting for Virginia to make the first move. Sometimes she didn’t speak during her sessions, instead just walking back and forth, angered that she was wasting her time in sessions that she loathed. The only reason she had even agreed to see a doctor was because her deceitful husband made that a provision in their ongoing divorce proceedings. She wanted every last dime she felt she had earned in their ten-year marriage. She had smiled when she had to, and undressed when her husband wanted her. A small price to pay for getting anything and everything she wanted.

Virginia thought that Nicholas wasn’t paying attention to her, which really pissed her off. Even though he was just her psychiatrist, it was still important to her that he pay attention. Little did Virginia know that Nicholas couldn’t concentrate on anything else when she was near him.

Nicholas Waters was bound by an ethical code to avoid involving himself with his patients. But in his mind, they were just fantasies. Desiring a woman and actually acting upon his desire were two different things, and his fantasies usually went away after a visit or two. Virginia Templeton was a different case. He knew it, she knew it, and so did anyone who had ever come in contact with her.

She had been looking at him from the moment she arrived, but didn’t say a word. Nicholas sometimes wondered if she knew how much he wanted her. He would imagine himself lying next to her, consuming every inch of her sensuous body. Kissing her, touching her breasts, wondering how he could make her happy. She was filled with desire―and, sometimes, quite a bit of rage―but that didn’t stop Nicholas from having tight control of his mind every time she came for a visit. He was her psychiatrist, and that was the way it had to stay … for now.

He was also a married man and, regardless of his unhappiness, he had remained married to the same woman for more than twenty years. When Nicholas met Carmella, he was a struggling medical student with loans, minutes away from personal bankruptcy. She was beautiful, with vibrant red hair and a sweet smile that usually presented her in a glamorous, but guarded, light. Love never entered the picture. Her family was very wealthy and highly visible. He knew she was the solution to his financial problems.

Carmella’s main flaw was that she usually had a drink in her hand at eight in the morning and continued drinking until very late at night. She never wanted sex with him. That didn’t mean she didn’t like sex; she just didn’t like sex with her husband. For his part, Nicholas didn’t care about love or sex until he met Virginia.

From the very moment Virginia Templeton walked into his office, attitude and all, he was hooked. He had never felt such a strong, passionate connection to anyone. Actually, he never questioned his life as much as he did once Virginia Templeton became his patient.

A friend of his had referred her, and Nicholas reluctantly took her on as a patient because he felt doing otherwise might put her on the edge of doing something horrible. She came in with a lot of hatred and, whether she admitted it or not, he sometimes thought they made a breakthrough. A patient who didn’t want help never got better, but he felt she could make progress by increasing her visits to his office.

Nicholas watched Virginia, waiting until she was ready to start. It always took her a little bit, as she prepared to start the sessions in her own way.

After strutting around the office, Virginia kicked off her leopard, four-inch Stuart Weitzman pumps and sat her ass right smack in the middle of Nicholas’s desk. She was wearing a very tight, black leather skirt, and a see-through, white lace shirt. Because she was all leg when she crossed them, which she liked to do, Nicholas could see her black lace panties and the tiny rose tattoo on her upper right thigh.

“So, Nick, where shall I begin today?” Nicholas didn’t answer, and that angered her more than he knew. “What the fuck? Help me out here, Doc. I need some answers.”

For months, everything Nicholas had tried had completely pissed her off. At that moment, he felt she might be ready for a breakthrough, and quietly let her continue.

“Okay, let me tell you what happened last night,” she went on. “Slater, my loving, sweet jerk of a husband was out of town. I got in my car, went right back to my old stomping grounds, drank too much, and fucked a whole lot of times. Since you didn’t ask who I was with, let me tell you. Two men were in my bed last night. One was very tall, with dark curly hair. The other was very short with a long blonde ponytail, kind of a freaky looking guy. One was on my right and one was on my left. Blondie had one finger in my ass and the other dark, sexy guy, who looked a lot like you, was in my cunt. What do you think about that?”

Nicholas began to write notes. All thoughts of him having a conversation with his patient were off the board for now. He was so busy picturing the details that he couldn’t really concentrate. He was so far away from where he should be ethically that he stopped himself, took a breath, and then continued with his notes.

Virginia took full advantage of the moment, as she quickly scooted off his desk and proceeded to strut around the office. “Wow, Doc, when did you get that picture-perfect plant?” She didn’t actually give a shit about the plant on the floor; she just wanted Nicholas to enjoy the view as she leaned down to touch it. “Follow me, Doc.” Bending down even lower, she spread her legs, once again exposing her lace-covered bottom. Then, just as quickly as she had lowered herself, she stood up, turned around, and smiled beautifully.

“You know, Nick, you’re such a bore. You just sit there and write and write and write. Come on. Say something. Do you ever answer your patients, or do you like to totally piss them off? If that was your intention, it worked. You win. I’m totally pissed off.”

Nicholas could sense her anger boiling over, and watched in anticipation that Virginia might actually be feeling something. She was just about to explode; he knew it, but chose not to stop it from happening. Sometimes that was all a patient needed to break through the barriers they’d surrounded themselves with. He also had to keep reminding himself of what was ethical. He was in danger of crossing the line, and he knew it. He hoped his feelings weren’t transparent to Virginia.

“I hate boring men,” she continued, as she paraded around the room. “My father was boring. He rarely talked, and he never smiled. You can write that in your little notebook. My father was a piece of shit―a mean, selfish asshole. He never talked to me or treated me like his daughter. He had no love in him; that’s what my mother used to say. He had no soul, and I didn’t even cry when he killed himself. It was no loss to anyone. There are two things I hate in men. A man who doesn’t smile, and a man who acts like he’s better than me.”

Nicholas glanced down at his watch, realizing that Virginia was getting more agitated. There was usually a moment during her treatments that pushed her to the top. The moment varied, but the pattern always repeated.

“Is my time up?” she asked. “Even if it’s not, it’s time for me to go. We’re getting nowhere today. As a matter of fact, I think today will be my last visit. I don’t need to be here. Time is money. Face it, Nick, you can’t help me. No one can.”

Nicholas decided it was now or never. “Virginia, sit down and stop pacing. Let’s go with what you just said. You do want me to help you, don’t you?”

“No, I don’t think so. How would you feel if you were seven years old and your father pulled out a gun and pointed it at your mother? Then shot her, took the same damn gun and shot himself in the head while his daughter watched? I watched that! What kind of a person does that to his child?” She was quite proud of herself for once again coming up with a good story. “What makes it worse was my phony foster parents stuck me in the attic with ten other kids. Sometimes I looked around the attic and wondered how my life could ever be anything but dreadful and confusing. There were days when I didn’t even feel human.” Oh, she was so good at this.

“Okay, Virginia. Now that you have told me what happened to you, and you think I bought it, let’s begin all over again. Every time you come here, you tell me a different story. This time, tell me the truth. Then maybe, just maybe, I can help you.”

“Fuck you, Nick!” she growled. “That was the truth.”

“Okay, then. Tell me how and why you married a man you didn’t love.”

Virginia began to laugh. “You don’t really think I come here for your advice. Do you? I come here because my asshole husband makes me come here. He won’t give me my fair share in the divorce unless I agree to have some therapy. He wants to ease his conscience. He’s afraid he’ll look bad if I go off the deep end, and he doesn’t want any headlines. A man like Slater puts himself before anyone.”

Nicholas returned to his desk, which served as his safety net. He could sense Virginia was getting quite angry, and wasn’t sure if he should push during this session. Usually, that only infuriated her more, causing her to tell more lies.

“Okay, Nick. Since we’re having this nice little chat, let me tell you what I think. My husband wants to fix me and set me free. Women like me don’t get fixed. We like men, sex, and booze. We drink for fun and fuck like crazy. What’s so wrong with that? If it feels good, why not? I hate to think that being in love is enough for anyone.”

After thinking for a moment, Nick figured it was time to talk. “Believe it or not, love is enough for many people. One day, you will be in love, and maybe that will be enough for you too.”

“Oh, really? Are you in love with your wife? Do you even have a wife? I don’t know anything about you, other than I want to fuck you. And I think you want to fuck me. I don’t do normal, and I don’t think you do either. Or let me put it another way. You might do normal, but you don’t really like normal.”

Nicholas was on his way to understanding her convoluted view of what she was all about. He didn’t soften just yet, but he was on his way. He didn’t want to compromise, but he was a man. Virginia had gotten to him even with all his armor; she knew how to dig deep. He was very close to giving in to his fantasy, and she knew she had finally penetrated into his soul. It was, she thought, her moment.

Game on! She was euphoric. “I bet if you let me get you in the sack, we would be born again as one. If you allowed me to slowly undress you, button by button, and then gently massage every morsel of your being. My lips would embrace that cock of yours and you, my dear doctor, would never be the same. I promise you that! I can take you on a journey that will totally overwhelm you, and you will be mine forever, or for as long as I want you.” A sultry smile spread across her face.

Virginia found herself moving as close to Nicholas as she possibly could. She could barely breathe. Her breasts pressed against his chest, she could feel his hardness against her. He didn’t feel like other men. He was distant and completely disconnected from her. To her surprise, he showed no reaction. He just stared at her in silence.

Being this close to a man who seemed to feel nothing was quite disturbing to her ego. Every man she knew would have reacted quite differently. Although, she was excited by the challenge he presented. She straightened her shoulders, not allowing herself to be weak.

Nicholas wanted to forget that he was her doctor and instead take her in his arms. He was uncertain how long he could resist, but he knew there would be no turning back once he gave in. He stepped back, putting some distance between them.

His rejection angered Virginia. “You’re not the right doctor for me. Tell me why you took my case. Your practice was full, but you added me to your patient load. Did you really think you could help me?”

“Yes, of course I thought I could help you.”

“Then why the fuck aren’t you helping me?” she spat.

“Because you don’t want help. You have repeatedly told me one lie after another. I can’t perform miracles.”

“Screw you, Nick. Screw you. I don’t like to waste time and today, as usual, I am wasting my time. The only thing left is for us to go to bed together. I know you want me, I can tell. But you can’t do it if you’re my doctor.”

“Virginia, sit your ass down. I’m your doctor, not your lover. Why would you think that I want to go to bed with you?” His patience was wearing thin.

“Because every man wants me,” she purred, again closing the distance between them. Reaching for his belt, she began to slowly lower his zipper. “You want me and I know it.”

“Virginia, you need to leave. Now. As of this very moment, my services as a doctor are over.”

Virginia backed off. “You don’t mean that.”

“Oh, but I do. Watch this.”

Nicholas wrote on his notepad, “Virginia Templeton’s sessions have ended as of July 9.” He signed the paperwork to make it official, then pointed to the door.

“You need to leave right now.”

Virginia strolled out of the office, not looking back. She refused to let Nicholas see the tears in her eyes. He had won, and she hated that.

Nicholas took several deep breaths, relieved to have resisted her very tempting offer. Their sessions had ended, and only time would tell if he would miss her. If he was honest with himself at that moment, though, he was disappointed at the thought of never seeing her again.

REVIEW:

We all have been subjected to bullying in one form or another . . . or been the bully ourselves.

In Breakable by Aimee L. Salter, young Stacy is bullied by a nasty elitist crew from school. The hardest part of being bullied by them is she once considered them her friends.

Add to Stacy’s angst her not-so-secret love for Mark who begins dating the nastiest of the crew, but he is blinded to Karyn’s true nature by her “perceived” beauty.

To recount more would definitely be a spoiler . . . but one more little twister, Stacy communicates with “Older Me”, her future self, by looking in a mirror. And “Older Me” isn’t nearly the person she appears to be.

Breakable is a fast-paced book filled with raw emotions and a host of interesting characters.

For a debut novel, Ms. Salter has tapped into an issue at the forefront of too many tragedies on the front page of our newspapers today. She is a clever wordsmith and very perceptive into the world of YA readers.

Breakable kept me engage and I only put it down because I reached the end. I highly recommend Breakable to all readers and I look forward to reading and reviewing more of Ms. Salter’s books in the future!

Excerpt:

I’d been expecting another text from Mark. I’d just assumed when the phone went again so soon…

I didn’t check the sender before I opened the text.

The words screamed at me from the glowing screen:

HEY FATTY R U COMIN 2NITE?

DONT 4GET UR BRIDLE

FINN WANTS 2 GO 4 A RIDE

My ears burned. I could just see them, all gathered around Belinda’s phone, cackling. I’d learned a long time ago it wasn’t worth opening anything that came from her, or Karyn, or Terese.

Why hadn’t I checked the stupid phone?

With shaking fingers, I deleted the text. My stomach hardened into a knot, the bitter taste of bile rising in my throat. I drew the straighteners through the last strands of my hair without really paying attention.

Oh, gawd. Was Older Me right? Should I stay home? If they’d started taunting me before we even got there, then it was going to be one of those nights. They’d make it hurt.

But… Mark.

Mark had grabbed my elbow as I ran from art that morning. Told me we needed to talk. He’d run his hand through his sandy hair. His blue eyes wouldn’t quite meet mine. He’d been nervous. Twitchy.

Mark was never nervous with me. And I’d only ever seen him twitch when he was talking to whatever girl he had the squeeze for.

When he left, I’d almost danced on the spot.

So, I had to go tonight because I thought – I hoped – Mark was finally going to ask me out.

But if the vultures were already circling…

I stared at the phone in my hand and swallowed hard. Then realized Older Me was still talking.

“…seems hard to believe, but your friendship with him is probably more fun than anything else you could have right now. And who knows what will happen later? Wouldn’t it be better not to risk that?”

Ignoring the irony of my future self asking rhetorical questions about the future, I dropped the phone onto my bed and picked up my bag. Picking through items one by one, pretending I was listening, I made sure the condoms I’d bought that afternoon were still safely hidden under my wallet and make-up bag, stifling the shiver that ran down my spine.

If I was right and Mark asked me out, would I have the courage to invite him back home? To sneak him in? How many of these would I need if… if it came to that?

“Stacy?”

After giving her my best we’re done here expression, I turned back to my bag.

Would it be better to put them in the zip pocket so there was no risk of them falling out and embarrassing me? Or would that make them too hard to find in the dark?

“Are you listening to me at all?”

I groaned and dropped everything but my keys back in my bag. “I’m leaving.”

“But–”

“I’m sure I’ll see you in the car,” I called back over my shoulder as I left the room.

She gaped at me from the surface of the mirror, but I kept walking.

Tonight was a turning point. I just knew it.

Faith, Supernatural Beliefs and Our Symbolic Brain
By Dr. Herman Kagan
October 20th – November 10 2013

Faith-SuperN-300
ISBN: 9781482028058
Non-Fiction-Social Science

Synopsis: We have been endowed with a symbolic brain that helps us adapt to and survive in our natural and man-made worlds. However it is open to both true and false beliefs both of which have impacts on our well-being. Supernatural beliefs may lead to disastrous consequences but continue to exist because they actually serve human survival through their reliance on faith and reduction of stress. So our symbolic brain’s readiness for supernatural beliefs is a mixed blessing-but a blessing nevertheless.

Excerpt: Dr. Jaylin apparently helped a woman who envisioned a body floating in front of her whenever she took a shower with her eyes shut. She tried taking a shower with her eyes wide open, but the sound of the running water filled her with dread. Then night after night she dreamed of being raped. Out of desperation she sought out Dr. Jaylin, who with regression therapy took her back to her past life, which turned out to be a tragic one. The woman saw her sister being raped and pushed to her death over a waterfall as she stayed hidden and frozen with fright. When her sister’s body crashed to the ground, she leaped out of hiding to help her but was swept away by the thundering torrent. Once she relived these experiences she was finally able to take a shower with her eyes closed, and the rape dreams vanished.

A living example is Rebecca Rosen, a thirty-three-year-old mother. Her grandmother committed suicide when Rebecca was eleven years old, and when Rebecca was in college she suddenly started hearing the voice of her dead grandmother. Her grandmother’s voice provided guidance lessons for taking care of herself and avoiding depression and Rebecca wrote down all the things her dead grandmother told her. Since then she hasn’t stopped hearing from other dead people, and continues to hear voices of the dead some ten years later.Has Rebecca been treated as abnormal or mentally disturbed? No, she has been accepted as a psychic and she is booked almost three years in advance for psychic readings at $275 for a half-hour and $500 for an hour. In February 2010 she gave a group reading at the Rock Financial Center in Novi, Michigan, which was attended by eight hundred people who paid $30 to $80 apiece for readings.
