About the Book

Two coworkers are brought together when an embarrassing bet is brought to light at the annual office party. Mia worries her trust in Jake, the company playboy, may place her heart and reputation at risk.

Excerpt

“And off they go,” Mia mumbled as she watched her traitorous friends weave their way across the room, leaving her alone with Jake. She turned and looked up into his eyes. Even though the lights were too low to see the exact shade, she knew they were the color of well-worn denim. “I hope you’re aware of what you unleashed on your pals.”

She considered the man standing before her. He was tall with broad, strong-looking shoulders. She knew he played ball with some of the guys in the office because she’d often heard them talking about the games over coffee in the break room. The way his shirts fit indicated he worked out. Add that to his classic blond hair and blue eyes and he was definitely drool-worthy, as Mandy would say.

The biggest question in Mia’s mind was whether or not he would ever see her as anything but an analyst with more opinions than boobs. Thankfully she had the data to back those opinions up.

“They may thank me in the morning,” Jake said with a twinkle in his eye.

“They might,” she conceded.

He stepped closer to Mia. Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his body radiating to her already flushed skin.

“Besides,” he lowered his voice and held Mia’s gaze, “it served its purpose.”

“What purpose is that?”

“To get you to myself.”

Book Review

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Risky Business from Dena Garson in exchange for an honest, though not necessarily positive, review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Risky Business by Dena Garson is a hot, happily-for-the-foreseeable-future story set at an office party where a number of shenanigans ensue.

I call it a happily-for-the-foreseeable-future story because one never knows how an office party romance will end up. While it appears that Mia and Jake have had secret lust for one another for some time, neither had the courage to act on it until an adolescent office party bet gives them the nudge they both needed.

The writing in Risky Business is good but I wish there had been less heat and more future for this lusty couple. It would have been a much more interesting read for me had I been able to follow them through the office ups and downs and seen the way Mia and Jake would have handled the bumps that would have cropped up before they reached happily-ever-after.

I enjoyed reading Risky Business, but would love to see it developed into a fuller length novel. I recommend it with four (three and a half rounded up) cups of steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

Author Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Dena Garson author of Risky Business.

Hi Dena, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

What were you like at school?

I was, and still am, that quiet girl who stood on the sidelines and watched everything around her. I usually had two, maybe three, close friends but mostly just wanted to blend in. Thanks to my dad’s job, we moved a lot. I attended three different high schools in three different states so my education varied.

Were you good at English?

Yes, actually I was. Reading comprehension was always my strongest suit.  Literature was one of my favorite subjects.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

To keep on keeping on! I have a list of stories I want to write. Finding time to get them on paper is the challenge. But my number one goal is for one of my books to end up on one of the BIG lists (USA Today or NY Times).

Which writers inspire you?

Karen Marie Moning is one of my favorites (I have several faves) but in every books she writes I find some line or sentiment that makes me stop and go “wow – that is so profound.” I wanna write like her when I grow up!

Give us an insight into your main character. What does Mia do that is so special?

In Risky Business, Mia must confront two things. First, her feelings for and attraction to Jake that she has repressed for some time. Second, she has to figure out what to do about a potentially embarrassing bet made about her at the office party. She handles both and comes out on top.

What are you currently working on?

I am putting the finishing touches on another contemporary romance loosely titled Snow Effect. This one is about young love left behind and second chances.

Which actress would you like to see playing Mia from Risky Business?

I’m terrible with actors and actresses but I could see Zoey Deutch playing Mia from Risky Business. Mia is smart with a touch of sass and Zoey isn’t far off in looks.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start writing?

If you mean start writing a book, it varies. A couple of times it’s been other writer friends who encouraged me to write a book as part of an upcoming series. Other times it’s the urge to tell a story that keeps rolling around in my head.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

I work full time so I don’t have a structured writing schedule. I grab time whenever possible. That might be during a lunch hour or after work while I’m waiting on the practice fields as one of my boys plays whatever sport they’re playing. I also write (or do all that “author stuff”) while they boys work on homework.

Where do your ideas come from?

A variety of places. Sometimes it’s from conversations I’ve had with friends. Or maybe an article I’ve read that made me wonder what might “really” be behind it. Sometimes it’s a random flash of a scene in my head.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

Both. Normally I see a scene or two and I’ll get those on paper. I’ll start outlining soon after that to collect all the info I have on my main characters. But before I even get half way through a book I’ll have a full outline done.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Promotion. Uuuggg. I do not like the spotlight. And I always feel like promotion equates to bugging people about buying your book.

Do you read much and if so, who are your favorite authors?

I used to read a ton, but not as much as I’d like to. Some of my favorite authors are Karen Marie Moning, Stephanie Laurens, Julia Quinn and Katie MacAllister.

For your own reading, do you prefer eBooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

I was a die-hard paperback book fan until I got my Kindle. I used to travel a lot and I’d have to carry 5 or 6 books with me because I’d devour one on each flight. That many books gets heavy! When I realized I could pack one little device instead, I was hooked. I still prefer the feel of a paperback in my hand over the electronic device but I’ll take the convenience of having 100+ books at my disposal any day.

What books are you reading currently?

I’m reading some of the other books in the Black Hills Wolves series.

Tell us about the cover and how it came about.

When I got rights back to Risky Business the first thing I wanted to do was get a brand new cover for it. I wanted to show it was a contemporary, office-romance with an element of sexiness and Fiona Jayde delivered! I love the way the red shoes pop!

Who designed your book cover?

Fiona Jayde did the new cover for Risky Business. I was totally stoked by it!

I learned about her and her work when she did my cover for Your Wild Heart through Decadent Publishing. I loved her work on that series and knew I wanted her to do more of my covers. She also created the cover for my other re-release, Down To Business.

Do you have a trailer for Risky Business?

Yes, I have book trailers for three or four of my other books and I’m putting the finishing touches on the trailer for Down To Business.

Here’s the link to my YourTube Channel where you can find all of my trailers: https://www.youtube.com/user/DenaGarson

Do you think that giving books away free works and why?

Yes and no. It largely depends on what you’re trying to accomplish with a free book. If you just want attention drawn to a book and you don’t care about making a profit on the book, certainly, a free book will help get people’s attention. If you’re trying to establish your name as an author, yeah, it’s a way to get people to try your work and maybe they’ll buy your next book. And the “first in series” for free seems to work well to promote the rest of the books in the series. But if you’re serious about making a career out of writing, I don’t think you can constantly give away your books for free.

How do you relax?

I read or make beaded jewelry. But I also like just hanging out with my boys watching tv. Sometimes they even talk me into playing xbox with them.

What is your favorite quote?

Ooooo – I luv quotes. I have them everywhere.

Lately, my favorite has been

“I know nothing with any certainty but the sight of the stars makes me dream.”  (V. Van Gogh)

What is your favorite movie?

Just like books, it’s hard to nail down a favorite movie because it depends on my mood. Some movies that I’ll watch every time I come across them are RDJ’s Sherlock Holmes, The Avengers, and The Replacements. Oh, and let’s not forget Monty Python’s Holy Grail.

How can readers discover more about you and you work?

Facebook is probably the best way to keep up with me. I’m not big on posting a bunch of junk – I’m more of a lurker – but I do make announcements about upcoming books and post new covers there.

You can friend me at https://www.facebook.com/dena.garson.7

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.
