Servie wiped away evidence of the few tears which couldn’t be held back. Her heart beat so loudly that she could hear it inside her head. She wondered if anyone here at the airport could as well. She allowed herself an anguished glance back toward her family.
The announcement for last boarding blared throughout the airport. The words felt like a slug in the stomach. Servie shook her head bringing herself back to the present – January 2000. Back to reality. She looked down at her feet. Willing them to take a step. They felt like lead blocks. Was there any other choice? She had gone over and over the options in her mind. Felt the pain of it in her heart. But she knew this was the only way. A plan of desperation. A heart-wrenching sacrifice. She knew she must do this. She must surrender to the plan for her children.
And so Servie turned and took the longest walk of her life. Through the gate and up the ramp to the aircraft. This ride would take her away from Zimbabwe, Africa, to a foreign land over 7,000 miles away. Halfway around the world from the only place she had ever known. Halfway around the world from a tiny village where neighbors were like family. Halfway around the world from her six children. And halfway around the world from a wide-eyed toddler who loved and needed her mother.
