It is my pleasure to welcome Laura Welling, author of Snowbound with the Pack, to Room With Books! Please tell us about yourself.
Hi! I’m Laura Welling and I write paranormal romance and urban fantasy. I’m Australian but I live on a horse farm in the USA, surrounded by various critters.
Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
Depends when you asked me. I think my ambitions even before I turned ten were: spy, veterinarian, journalist, private detective, zoologist, writer…you get my point.
How long have you been writing and what was your inspiration to write?
I’ve been writing stories my whole life. I come from a family of Irish storytellers, so it’s in the blood. My mother was always telling the most wonderful stories. She was a big part of my inspiration.
Do you have a job in addition to writing? Please tell us about.
I have an intense day job in software engineering. I love that, too. I’m happy to have multiple vocations I really enjoy.
How would you summarize this book in less than 20 words?
Haunted woman stranded in a snowstorm confronts her past, with the help of the man who’s entirely wrong for her.
Now, let’s talk about writing and how you came to be a published author.
When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?
When my vice principal made me read a story I had written to the entire school. I was in kindergarten, so it was pretty terrifying. But other kids seemed to like it, so I wrote another one. And another.
How long did it take to get your first book published?
My first book was actually a technical book…but first novel, a really long time. I stopped writing fiction after college and took it up again seriously much later. From there it took about four years.
How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to “The End”?
That depends on a lot of factors. This book took around a month, but it’s a short book, so that’s not typical.
What can we expect from you in the future? More of the same genre? Books of a different genre?
I expect to write more paranormal romance and urban fantasy. All my books have a suspense plot, so one day I may branch into romantic suspense, but not for a while. I have this series to write first!
Who is your favorite character from your books and why are they your favorite?
It’s really hard to pick just one. Usually it’s the hero of whichever book I am writing at the time.
What is your routine for writing?
For a long time I found it hard to carve out time to write. What worked for me was being willing to work anywhere I could find fifteen spare minutes: on a plane, while waiting for appointments, and so on.
Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?
I usually write the book first, under a working title. Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn’t.
Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books?
Not really. There’s often a theme of self-acceptance though.
Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?
What is your favorite book and why is it your favorite? How many times would you estimate you’ve read it?
I seriously can’t pick just one.
Do you read all the reviews of your books?
I try not to, but it’s hard to resist. If many people are saying the same thing in reviews, then I’ll take that into consideration when writing my next book.
That’s enough of the serious business. How about a handful of fun questions!
What is your favorite food? Cheese!
Who is your favorite singer or group? Not sure I have one!
What is your favorite color? Black
What is your ideal getaway dream vacation? A trip to the World Equestrian Games
What final words would you offer to our readers?
I hope you’ll enjoy Snowbound With The Pack as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Thank you for spending time at Room With Books. I appreciate your time and wish you the best with your book. I hope you will come back again!
When she’s not writing, Laura Welling wears a lot of other hats: mother, farmer, and software engineer. She’s Australian but lives in the United States on a horse farm, which she shares with her family, crazy dogs, and various horses, cats and chickens. She is a compulsive reader of all genre fiction, who started reading before the age of two, and never stopped. She wrote her first “book” when she was five—a spy story, which has since been joined in a bottom drawer by various other early attempts.
