Loving the Book Christmas Blitz Day 1 – Echo of Her Presence @awritr

The Echo of Her Presence

by Alaina Stanford

I have one of those brains that won’t turn off at night. Many nights I would distract my intellect by revamping a movie, book or TV show in my mind. I would twist and turn the plots and characters to achieve the ending I preferred. That developed into side stories about my favorite minor characters. Each night I fell asleep in the middle of a grand adventure. It wasn’t long before I began to create stories of my own and put pen to paper.

I love a good adventure. I love a good romance. As the mother of seven children, I also learned to love to play video games. One day it occurred to me to write an adventure that flowed like a video game and I added a touch of romance. Thus, Hypnotic Journey was born. The HJ characters are like a family to me. They are foolish, daring, resourceful, passionate and dedicated to their friends.

My love for Science Fiction gave birth to the Treborel Series. It’s a paranormal Sci-Fi romance featuring a psychotic villain and a multiple layer of hero’s fighting to survive the chaos.

I write about how friendship and love can carry you through situations that you might not otherwise survive. You will find my stories exciting and steamy, but I am not an erotic writer. My stories fade to dark when the steam begins to rise, but take it from me, the steam does rise and emotions do soar.

Ariel carried the ultimate burden of failure on her shoulders. She’d fallen victim to the oldest trick in the book. Angel’s aren’t supposed to fail, angels aren’t suppose to fall in love. Her failure concerned both. In her moment of weakness she had not only failed mankind, she had failed God. Now her heart was an island of ice encased behind a steel barrier no one could penetrate. Not even her divine partner Met.

Ariel’s heart was locked away forever. Then she gazed into the steely gray eyes of a stubborn Texas rancher.

And some fun interview questions

When did you know you wanted to write books?

I wrote my first story at age 6 and kept writing. Although it never occurred to me to try to publish my books until a few years ago when an author friend suggested it.

What does your writing process look like?

I brainstorm story lines, then write a paragraph summary, then outline a summary, then do an outline by chapter, then write, write, edit, write, edit, edit, write,

What other hobbies do you enjoy when you are not writing?

I play the piano, am learning to play the flute and sing.

A lot of authors I have noticed have music as a way to help with their writing. Is this something that you have used as well? If not what are some things you have used?

Music or a classic movie running in the background help me write, other times complete silence is best.

Now for some fun interview questions!

Is there a message you would like readers to get out of this book?

Widow’s Rule is about moving on with your life after a devastating loss and not being afraid to lean on your friends in dark times. Whitney is a strong independant woman who took her deceased sister’s children to raise then lost her husband in an active shooter incident. She’s determined to make it on her own but things grow quickly out of control when an outside force threatens her and her family.

Snippet Time!

Whitney checked her email one last time before shutting down her office computer. Ten days ago Veronica promised to email her Juliette’s personal information. Whitney sighed and checked her phone- no emails, no calls, and no text messages. The screen went dark and she sat it on her desk. Opening her desk file drawer, Whitney frowned at Veronica’s file. She needed a fireproof filing cabinet with a secure lock if she was going to store sensitive documents.

She pulled Veronica’s file from her drawer and headed toward Josh’s office at the end of the hallway. He was on the phone when she entered. She waved at him and opened the long filing cabinet that was nearly as tall as she and ran down the entire length of Josh’s wall. She sat Veronica’s file inside and closed the drawer. A quick wave goodbye to Josh and she headed back to her office to grab her purse.

“Whitney, hang on,” Josh called after her in an urgent voice.

She turned to look at him and he waved her back. When she entered the room, he placed his palm over the receiver and said, “Close the door, we need to talk.”

Whitney shut the door behind her and sat down in front of his desk wondering which of his deals were about to turn sour. He hung up the phone and locked eyes with her. “Whit, that was Warren Stevenson, Veronica died last night.”

Whitney stared at him in stunned silence.

Josh continued, “Warren said it happened around 2 o’clock this morning. He thinks she was heading downstairs to make some warm milk. She apparently did that quite often when she couldn’t sleep. She must have tripped or stumbled on the stairs and broke her neck. When her man Roger found her this morning, she was gone.”

“I can’t believe this,” Whitney stammered. “Veronica was just here. She was supposed to call me this week…” An iron claw squeezed her heart forcing the breath from her lungs. Why couldn’t death leave her alone?

Seven months pregnant with three small children and a new job was difficult for most women even with a spouse at their side. Whitney was alone, but she was strong. She would not be broken. When her boys ask to take karate lessons like their friends, Whitney shifts her budget to accommodate them. It sounded like a good outlet for their emotions and energy. The one thing she didn’t plan on was her attraction to the soft spoken, muscular karate instructor. Whitney wasn
’t looking for love, romance or a lover, especially someone so masculine, so outgoing, so handsome, so sexy as Heath Dixon.
Instead, Whitney concentrates on work and her children. A new client, Veronica Nelson, an elderly woman with a sweet smile hires Whitney as her corporate attorney. Whitney discovers Veronica has an intellectual property rights claim against a lucrative corporation that owes her millions of dollars. Veronica client refuses to go to the police. Instead, she asks Whitney to rewrite her Will.
Shortly thereafter Veronica dies mysteriously. Thus begins a chain of events that spiral quickly out of control. Whitney discovers there are some things she cannot face alone and finds herself turning to the only man who can protect her.

Josh glanced at Whitney, who was pulling a file from her briefcase. She removed a packet from the file and handed it to Josh. He lifted a large folded piece of paper from the file and spread it out on the table explaining, “Mrs. Stevenson, the economy has taken a hard hit the last few years. During that time, my team has concentrated on building luxury homes. My clients use these as vacation homes for the summer and ski season. But I believe the most urgent need right now is for smaller, affordable homes for new and growing families. I’m not talking about low-income homes. My goal is to build a subdivision with three basic floor plans and modest amenities for three-bedroom homes. I’ll offer a full unfinished basement and a two-car garage, something that a lower middle-class family can afford. I’m targeting families that want to get out of the condominium complexes and into a house. I want to offer these families a chance for a home with a backyard where their children can play, instead of in the street or a playground on the other side of the complex.”

Veronica’s dark eyes studied the plan then turned to gaze at Josh, and then Whitney. She asked, “This property is not close to the ski resorts, so a residential platform seems appropriate. Mrs. Lawson, do you and your husband ski? I imagine that living surrounded by mountains affords you the opportunity to indulge in that sport.”

Whitney’s face went pale. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. Josh placed his hand on Whitney’s shoulder and said, “Whitney’s husband passed away this past winter. You may have heard about the shooting in a warehouse in Ogden. Whitney’s husband Mason sacrificed his life to save two teenagers, one of which was my son.”

“Oh dear,” Veronica said quietly. “Yes, I do recall something about a tragedy in Ogden.” She looked past Josh to Whitney and said, “I’m sorry dear. I didn’t realize…”

Whitney forced a smile and managed, “There’s no need to apologize.”

Warren cleared his throat and said, “Now that the warm and fuzzies are over, mother, please sign the document.”

Josh shot Warren an angry glare. Warren leaned back in his chair and fell silent. Veronica ignored him and added, “Please be my guests this evening for dinner. I usually dine alone, so your company would be a nice change, and I’m sure my chef can whip up something perfectly suited for a mother-to-be.”

Josh gave Whitney a curious glance and she nodded. “We’d be delighted, Mrs. Stevenson,” he answered with a smile.

“Very well then,” she signed the papers, then slid them back toward the attorneys and added, “and now that the deal is done, you must call me Veronica.”

Snippet Time
“The trolls built the large fire in mere minutes. The ailing trees
fell easily with a few short blows, of their huge axes. By the time Gravid’s
garrison had backtracked and crossed the river, the trolls had laid out nearly
a dozen trees. Cabal climbed the white stone embankment to peer into the water
for signs of the beast. Sarah began to work her magic, envisioning the black
form creature lying at the base of the frothy water.
As the warriors and trolls worked together to pile the logs, Sarah
searched the dark water with her mind, searching for the dead beast.
Feeling a coldness touch her mind as her probe reached the bottom of the dark
water, she knew she had found the creature.  She glanced up at Cabal, and
signaled that she was ready to begin. Sarah move her thought under the beast
and pushed it upward until it slowly breached the surface of the frigid spring
fed pool. Elves and trolls scrambled from the large pile of logs, staring at
the water as the sleek, purplish-black skin of the dead beast broke the
surface. The sickening stench increased tenfold as soon as it appeared, nearly
overwhelming Sarah.
High above the beast, perched upon the boulders that partially
blocked the falls, Cabal staggered back as the reeking odor hit him. Sarah’s
ear-piercing scream filled the air, causing Cabal to lose his balance and
tumble over the slick rock, plunging toward the black water. Sarah struggled
against her horror and the awakening of the beast, as the sleek black blob
quivered in the warm air then slowly began to spread itself out over the
water.  Letting the beast’s carcass drop, Sarah reached out with her magic
and pulled Cabal from the water, placed him on the yellow grass beside the
pond.
Cabal yanked his sword free, as he reached the ground. Running
toward the edge of the pond, Gravid shouted for his warriors as the trolls
scattered, bellowing in fear. From across the river, Nicole rushed forward,
chastising herself for not bringing the black, crystal talisman she possessed.
The creature was not dead! It had merely lain helpless at the bottom on the
pool, waiting. Its brief moment in the sunlight was enough to give it strength.
It was coming back to life, and they had no weapon to stop it. Feeling the
reassuring pressure of Jack’s hand on her arm, she watched as the beast shot
from the water and soared over their heads to land on the pile of logs behind
them.

Not waiting for the others, the two lovers
attacked. There was a chance in its new awakening that it was still weak. It
remained a large blob of black tar. It showed no sign of the metamorphic powers
it possessed nearly a year ago. Raising his sword high, Jack swung viciously at
the slithering beast as it attempted to dislodge the pile of logs. Severing a
large piece of the formless creature, Jack became quickly entangled as it
surrounded his feet, and climbed up his legs. Screaming, Nicole dragged him back
from the beast, toward the water, tearing at the black ooze with her fingers as
it spread attempting to engulf him in a thin black film.”

And a few fun interview questions

12 Days of Great Summer Reads – Seven Year Rule

Let’s keep this summertime fun rolling.
Rules just don’t apply to some people… Whitney and Mason’s life was perfect. When Beth explained her Seven Year Theory. They scoffed at the idea of the seventh year of marriage being the make it or break it year for most couples. That theory didn’t apply to them. They were the perfect couple. Their brand new house overlooked a spacious lake. Their brand new cars were state of the art. Their careers were taking off at an accelerated rate. Their sex life was incredible. Their lives were perfect. When Whitney’s widower brother-in-law dies, leaving three small children in their care, their perfect lives are torn apart. Raising children was never part of the plan. Raising children requires sacrifice. Sacrifice they never intended to make. Sacrifice that could bring chaos to their perfect way of life. Sacrifice that could bring an end to their perfect marriage. Sacrifice, that if not done correctly could bring an end to a child’s life. Mason considered himself incredibly lucky to have a wife like Whitney. She was beautiful, sexy, smart, had a professional attitude toward life and she wasn’t interested in starting a family. When Whitney’s widower brother-in-law was killed leaving his three small children in Whitney and Mason’s charge, Mason is exposed to a new side of Whitney. A side he was not prepared for, a side he never thought he’d see.  Suddenly Mason’s world was filled with diapers and stains. His perfectly coiffed wife quickly transformed into an unkempt mother of three living in jeans and carrying a diaperbag as a purse. Mason’s needs were no longer being filled. His house was a noisy mess. There was a 6 year old boy looking to him for fatherly attention. But fatherhood requires a man to live for his children and not himself. Mason was not prepared to do that, but how could he walk away from Whitney in her hour of need?

Blake slid from Whitney’s lap. The four year old boy went to the rail to
gaze down at the football game in the yard below. Molly went to stand by his side, pulling
him back slightly from the wobbly rail. When the game was over, Josh and the
others brought the Zack, who was six and Jake, twelve back up to the deck.

“How about some ice cream?” Beth offered.

Beth and Whitney went inside to make some ice cream cones. Amy held Ashley, who
cuddled up next to her large stomach and yawned. Blake walked over to Josh and
raised his hands. Josh lifted him up and sat down on the bench across from
Amy.

Randy tossed the football lightly to Jake and said, “Good game, Jake. We are still
the reigning champions.”

Jake grinned and looked at Zack, “We didn’t beat you and Mason by much. Next time
it’s going to be a real face-off. Go long!”

Zack beamed with pride and turned to run toward the far end of the deck. Jake threw
the ball high in the air. Amy rose to her feet as Zack neared the rail, her
eyes wide in horror. He wasn’t slowing his pace.

“Zack! Stop!” Amy yelled.

Seeing the fear in Amy’s face, Mason spun and rushed toward Zack. Zack fell backward,
hard onto the rail. It collapsed from his weight. Mason grabbed on to Zack as
he fell. He pulled the boy to him, surrounding him with his body. They both flew
into the open air and down toward the cement around the pool.

“Amy! Call 911!” Randy ordered, racing to follow Josh down the steps.

Amy grabbed Blake and handed him to Molly saying, “Take him inside and get Whitney
and your mom! Jake, take Ashley! Stay here!”

Mason landed on his back by the edge of the pool, with a sickening thud. He and Zack
rolled into the deep end of the pool. Josh and Randy dove in after them. Josh
grabbed Zack, who was struggling to reach the surface. Josh pulled Zack to him.
He placed Zack on the cement, at the edge of the pool. Then turned and dove
toward Randy, who was surfacing with an unconscious Mason.

Zack was crying hysterically when Amy reached him. She knelt down beside him and
pulled him into her arms.

“Are you hurt?” She asked breathlessly, searching him for any signs of trauma.

Zack didn’t answer; instead, he clung to her, burying his face in her chest. Whitney
and Beth ran to their side. Beth scooped Zack up and handed him to Whitney,
then pulled Amy to her feet.  Whitney
kissed and hugged Zack, then checked him over quickly. Satisfied he was not
hurt she handed him to Beth and rushed to where Josh and Randy were pulling
Mason from the pool.

“He’s not breathing,” Randy said. He quickly laid Mason on his back.

Josh listened to Mason’s chest and said, “His heart is beating.” Then blew two puffs
of air into Mason’s lungs, Mason didn’t respond.

Whitney knelt beside Mason. His head was covered in blood, “Mason, no, no, Mason,” She
whispered, tears streamed down her face.
