Marrying the Wedding Crasher

by Melinda Curtis

This bachelor’s pretend girlfriend just made a shocking discovery—

She’s pregnant!

Although they dated for only a month, Harley O’Hannigan just agreed to be Vince Messina’s plus-one at a Harmony Valley wedding. Big mistake, given her deepening feelings for the tall, dark, unavailable bachelor. And what about Vince’s long-buried family history? Then there’s the growing secret that could transform this pretend relationship into the real thing…

Praise for Melinda Curtis:

“Wonderfully entertaining!” Jayne Ann Krentz, NYT Bestseller (referring to Playing for Love)

“Reading Slade and Christine’s story reminded me of why I enjoy romance. SEASON OF CHANGE has found a place on my keeper shelf!” Brenda Novak, NYT Bestseller

Amazon * Harlequin * Barnes & Noble

Their room in the bed & breakfast was small, just two twin beds. The comforters were a pale green and matched the shade of the thick towels in the tiny bathroom. As soon as the door closed and it was just Harley and Vince, the room felt as confining as a jail cell.

“You take the bed by the door.” Harley plopped her duffel and backpack on the one in the corner. “We need some ground rules. All changing will occur in the bathroom.”

“Oops.” Vince had ripped off his shirt while her back was turned.

She couldn’t un-see that, but Harley covered her eyes anyway. “Put your clothes back on.”

“Too late. I’m down to my boxers.”

She didn’t want to peek. Honest. But she did.

His jeans were still on.

“Made you look.” That grin. He hadn’t smiled since they’d stepped foot on his family’s property. She hadn’t expected to see it after their talk in the restaurant.

The butterflies tried to return. She sucked in a breath and sucked in her stomach, stuffing every reaction to Vince—positive and negative—deep down inside. “What happened to the brooding man I’ve been with the better part of the day?”

“He came into a bedroom with a beautiful woman and all his cares slipped away.” It was a lie. Vince couldn’t quite erase the shadows around his eyes. “Or it could be that this is payback for telling Reggie I threw out my back.” He was teasing her. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe Vince needed some brevity after the stress of seeing his family for the first time in years.

Harley hit Vince with her pillow, grabbed her duffel and retreated to the bathroom. It was the size of the closet in her apartment. She contemplated taking a cold shower. But the shower stall was so small, she’d have trouble shaving her legs. She doubted Vince could fit his shoulders in there. She was getting claustrophobic just brushing her teeth.

And, boy, was she glad she’d decided to bring a football jersey and boxer shorts to sleep in rather than a nightie. Nothing sexy about a woman wearing a football jersey and boxers that reached to her knees.

“Are you decent?” she called through the door once she’d changed.

“You used to think so.”

The impulse to submit to his charm was strong. Harley gritted her teeth and returned to the bedroom.

Vince sat up in bed, on top of the coverlet. Still no shirt on.

Harley’s jaw popped. This was going to be a test of wills. Mostly a test of her will.

Butterfly Harbor deputy Matt Knight wants two things: to date Lori Bradley and the chance to adopt Kyle, a troubled teen. Matt Knight was all about doing right by people. Especially those he cared about. But there wasn’t any moving forward, not with his life, not with Lori, as long as he was still anchored to the past.

The phone rang. Before Matt could reach for the receiver, Jasper answered.

“It’s for you, Matt. A Chris Walters?”

“That’s Kyle’s caseworker,” Matt said as he picked up his extension.
“Chris? Kyle okay?”

“Doing well, actually.” The social worker’s encouraging words belied the tension in his voice. “We’re still on track for an early release. For now at least.”

“What’s that mean?” Matt squeezed the receiver so hard his fingers
tingled. “What’s going on?”

“The judge in charge of Kyle’s case is retiring. His replacement is
reviewing all the cases ahead of time and, well, since we’re jumping beyond fosterage to adoption, she has some concerns about your living situation.”

“What’s wrong with my living situation?” Matt asked. “I’ve got a room
ready for him, he’ll have a part-time job with the sheriff’s department, and most importantly he’ll have more stability than he’s known in years.”

“I’m on your side, remember? You don’t have to convince me. She’s not denying your petition, Matt, but she has suggested a female influence in the house wouldn’t be a bad thing for Kyle. And given your marital status…”

“That’s about to be resolved.” Matt looked down at the papers on his desk. “I filed the divorce papers and am getting ready to sign them as we speak.”

“Okay. We’ll have to see how that plays with the judge.”

“Given Kyle’s last female influence was too hopped-up on prescription meds to give him a second thought, I wouldn’t think this would be any judge’s first concern.” Matt hated to speak ill of Kyle’s mother, but the truth was the truth.

“It’s a concern, Matt. And the judge only suggested it would be in your and Kyle’s best interest if there was someone in your life to help bring a bit of balance. Even if it’s just a girlfriend, which brings me to what we talked about before. She’s going to want to call Lori as a character witness.”

“Lori? How does she know about Lori?” The last time his heart had pounded this hard he’d been dodging bullets.

“Because I listed her in my report. You said you were dating her, that you thought it was getting serious. Are you telling me something’s changed?”

Changed? Other than Matt all but ignoring her the last few weeks while he got his head on straight and cleared the emotional deck? “No, nothing’s changed,” Matt blurted before his brain could catch up with the panic seizing his chest. He’d made a promise to Kyle, and Matt Knight never made a promise he couldn’t keep. “We’ve been seeing each other for a while, off and on.” Most recently off. All the more reason to remedy that.

“She’s completely on board with me taking Kyle in.”

“So you’re okay with her listed as a character witness? She’ll back up your statement should the judge want to call her in during Kyle’s hearing?”

“Yeah, of course.” Matt swallowed the lie. Well, it wasn’t a lie exactly. Lori did know about Kyle but Matt’s current relationship with her might be a bit, well, up in the air. “Have they set a date yet for the hearing?”

“Um, yeah. Hang on, I’ve got that right…” The sound of shuffling papers scraped against Matt’s ear. “Three weeks from Monday. Looks like the judge has us penciled in for two in the afternoon.”

Matt scribbled the date on his calendar, noting that was the same day as the big welcome dinner that opened the Butterfly Festival. That would take some juggling given it was all hands on deck in town for the department. “I’ll be there.” Somehow. “I thought I’d come up and see him in a couple of weeks. Need to figure out my days off.”

“You’re on the visitor’s list for anytime,” Chris said. “I’m glad you told me about Lori. This will go a long way with this judge in approving Kyle’s placement.”

“I hope so.” With Kyle’s troubled past, the only other placement option for him would be a group foster home or to extend his stint in the detention center he currently resided in. “Let me know if there are any more changes.”

“You got it.”

Matt hung up. Why was it, even when he had the best of intentions, he ended up messing things up? At least now he had even more of a reason to apologize to Lori. As much as he wanted her back in his life, he needed her.

Kyle needed her. Unease settled in his gut like a stone. He hated lying. To anyone.

But especially to Lori Bradley.

“Everything okay?” Jasper asked. “Is Kyle still getting out?”

“He sure is.” Matt picked up his pen, clicked it open and scratched his name on the divorce degree. A few seconds later, he set the sealed envelope on the counter, where it would go out in the afternoon mail.

Q & A With Brenda Novak

Please, tell us a story. It can be long or short. From your childhood or last week. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it’s yours. What’s your story?

When my youngest son was only six, a cousin, older by five years, slipped into the attic where my husband and I were storing a great many things and ferreted out the presents I’d put there at least a month before Christmas. Armed with the knowledge of what those presents were, it seemed he took some kind of perverse pleasure in destroying Thad’s fantasy of Santa Clause. He told Thad everything he was going to get—and let him know that Ted and I had bought each item and tucked it all away for safekeeping until December 25th, when we would pretend that Santa had come down the chimney and left those items for him.

When some children learn the truth, they get angry with their parents for perpetuating this myth. Thad didn’t react that way. He was angry with his cousin for destroying the magic we were trying to keep alive for him. He wasn’t yet ready to let that go. But I had gotten Thad something for Christmas this cousin failed to mention, probably because, in his mind, it was “just a book.” I have to admit Thad didn’t entertain himself with that book first of all. It wasn’t until later in the day, after the excitement of playing with his other toys had worn off a bit, that he and I sat down together to look through THE POLAR EXPRESS.

The book had come with a tape we listened to. I remember both of us being a little awed by the beauty of the illustrations and the way the words rolled off the narrator’s tongue as that tape played—“hot chocolate thick and rich as chocolate bars…” Sometimes I still think of that line, when it may have nothing to do with Christmas. But it was this gift that turned out to be the one I was most grateful I’d purchased because that story helped my little boy get beyond the disappointment of losing Santa Clause.  He took the same ride as the protagonist, who goes to the North Pole and is lucky enough to be selected to receive the first gift of Christmas. He shared that boy’s wonder and his joy when he received the bell from the harness of Santa’s reindeer that was supposed to help him believe in the magic of Christmas. Thad also shared in the disappointment when that bell was lost and was elated when spared the boy that loss by leaving it for him under the tree. Somehow that book softened the jarring blow of reality because it taught Thad that even though there may not be a jolly man dressed in a red suit who delivers toys to all good girls and boys, the magic of Christmas is real—as long as he chooses to believe.

Now I’m much older. But, like the narrator of that book, I can say, “the bell still rings for me.” I hope Thad will always be able to say the same.

Excerpt

HERE COMES TROUBLE

“Dammit, Malcolm.” Sheila resisted the urge to press trembling fingers against her fluttering chest. He leaned against the wall, hands in his pockets, a knowing gleam in his eyes. He’d thrown off her plans twice in one night. Two times too many. “I thought you’d gone downstairs.”

“Nope.”

Nothing more, just one word. Nothing on his face, just passivity. Once upon a time she’d have been able to read his expression, identify his moods, but not now. Not when it mattered.

“So, did you?”

“Did I what?” Sheila kicked out a leg and tapped restless fingers against her hip.

“Find what you were looking for?”

Find what she was—“Oh, my bracelet you mean?” Shit. “No, actually. I guess I was wrong—”

“You mean it wasn’t in the vault?”

“The vault?” She blinked, scrambling for an escape route out of the conversation. A distraction. Anything . . .

His hand whipped up and caught her chin, turning her face to his as he stepped closer, amber eyes hot as he stared into her surprised gaze. His breath caressed her skin, hot, intense. “No lies, Sheila. I’ve had enough to last me a lifetime.”

Sheila swallowed and attempted to ignore the heat moving through her body where he touched her, trying not to remember how it felt to be locked in his arms, to be the center of his attention, his world. Beneath his piercing gaze, the insistence she couldn’t avoid, there was also the shadow of the man she’d known, but it was the man who had walked away from her as easily as if she’d been a one-night stand.

“Then don’t ask,” she whispered as she reached up and wrapped her hand around his wrist, willing him to pretend he hadn’t seen, that he didn’t know where she’d been.

“Will it hurt him?”

His question caught her off guard but she managed to quell the unease roiling inside her as she found her way out. Mutual hatred and distrust of his father could very well forge a bond she’d be unable to break. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t use it. Or him. “Yes.”

Cari Quinn
USA TODAY bestselling author Cari Quinn wrote her first story–a bible parable–in 2nd grade, much to the delight of the nuns at her Catholic school. Once she saw the warm reception that first tale garnered, she was hooked. She attempted her first romance in junior high, long before she’d ever read one. Writing what she knew always took a backseat to what she wanted to know, and that still holds true today.

Though she also fires up her computer as a graphic designer, proofreader and editor, she can’t resist the lure of disappearing into a world of her own creation. Now she gets to pen sexy romances for a living and routinely counts her lucky stars.

The only thing she loves more than writing is hearing from readers! Please contact her through one of the ways below.

Cathy Clamp
USA TODAY and Nielsen Bookscan bestselling author Cathy Clamp writes urban fantasy/paranormal romance for Tor Books, including the Tales of the Sazi (shapeshifter urban fantasy romance) series, The Thrall (vampire) trilogy, the Blood Singer (urban fantasy, as Cat Adams) series—through book 6, and the new Novels of the Sazi series, beginning in August, 2015.

Cathy was awarded the Career Achievement Award for Paranormal Romance in May, 2008 from RT Bookreviews Magazine. Cathy also shared the win for several co-authored books with C.T. Adams of the Book Buyer’s Best Award, the RT Bookreviews Reviewer’s Choice Award, the Reviewers International Award of Excellence, the Texas Gold Romance Award, the Write Touch Readers Award, and several others. It’s gratifying and humbling to win awards for books that you put your heart into, and I hope you enjoy them as much as other readers have!

Cathy has also written several stand-alone novels, not in series, including my very first novel, The Road To Riches, an historical fiction about a railroad race in Colorado’s Silver Boom period, and Magic’s Design, the first urban fantasy published as Cat Adams.

Cathy also writes short stories, which is a whole different kind of writing.. I like writing in a lot of different genres, and it’s in short stories where I let my wings spread. I have published short stories in horror, science fiction, mystery, literary, Young Adult, romance, thriller, fantasy and western.

Anna J. Stewart
USA Today and national bestselling author Anna J Stewart can’t remember a time she didn’t have a book in her hands or a story in her head. A geek at heart, Anna writes romances featuring strong, independent heroines for Berkley (The Tremayne Family Romances), Harlequin Heartwarming (The Butterfly Harbor series) and will soon add romantic suspense to her booklist with the BONDED trilogy from Harlequin Romantic Suspense. RT Book reviews says Anna’s romances are “refreshingly unique, quietly humorous, and profoundly moving” and NYTimes bestselling author Brenda Novak says “The talented Anna J Stewart delivers every time!” Anna lives in Northern California where she deals with a serious SUPERNATURAL, STAR TREK, and SHERLOCK addiction and tolerates an overly affectionate cat named Snickers (or perhaps it’s Snickers who tolerates her).

Jodi Redford
Jodi Redford ~ Imaginary superhero. Lover of waffles and bacon. And scribe of erotic romance novels. A few of her readers have officially nicknamed her the Mistress of Naughtiness. She likes it because it makes her sound like an imaginary superhero dominatrix. She has won numerous writing awards, including The Golden Pen and Launching a Star.

When not writing or working the day job, she enjoys gardening and way too many reality television shows.

Amie Stuart
Hey Blue-collar lovers!

I’m Amie Stuart and I write sexy, contemporary romances, including AGAINST THE WALL, which is my story in the HHHEA Box set.

For those who don’t know me, I’m a native Texan and I’ve been writing for over ten years. I’m a storyteller even when I’m distracted by two twenty-something sons, too many pets, or a demanding dayjob as a personal assistant.

Leah Braemel
Leah Braemel is the only woman in a houseful of males that includes her college-sweetheart husband, two grown sons, a Shih Tzu named Seamus who behaves like a cat and Turtle the cat who thinks he’s a dog.

She writes sexy contemporary romances (though she does have one historical western) – most of them on the super-spicy side. So if you like bodyguards, cowboys, firefighters, and now blue collar workers, she has a book for you.

Reviewers have awarded Leah’s books numerous Top Pick and Recommended Reads designations as well as nominated them as Best Contemporary Romance, Best Erotic Romance and Best Ménage à Trois or More. Leah has also been nominated as Favorite Author and Best Erotic Romance Author.

Chudney Thomas
I was born in Brooklyn New York, raised on the island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. According to my father, I learned to read at three and wouldn’t allow him to skip a page of a story. I grew up raiding my mother’s stash of books and my Aunt Patsy’s extensive library. There, I developed my love of literature, and specifically romance.

Books transported me to different worlds, and encouraged me to learn about different cultures, continents, expanding my horizons. I currently live in Central Florida with my family and our interesting pet pooch Maya.
