“What’s perfect?”

“This right here.  The stars.  Aren’t they beautiful?”  She glanced over to find Jake staring at her.

“You’re beautiful.”

His hand cupped her neck and he came in close.  “Can I?”

Miriam didn’t respond.  She licked her lips as if they weren’t listening to her brain, which was emphatically yelling at her to stop this.

Jake obviously wasn’t listening to her internal monologue as his lips captured hers in a tentative kiss.  Her brain reminded her he was an asshole at the bar, he’d given her coke yesterday, he was mixed up in Tres Lobos, and he stole from his parents.  It was screaming at her that this was a bad idea.

But at the touch of his lips on hers, the lizard part of her brain—the part which was just made to eat, sleep, and have sex—told her to go for it.  She whimpered into his lips in defeat, and his arms went around her waist, pulling her close as he deepened the kiss.  Jake’s lips were soft, his mouth warm, and the aftershave exquisite.  She didn’t want him to ever let her go.

“Oh my God,” she breathed at him between kisses.  His tongue delved into her mouth, but before she lost herself completely, she pulled back.  “We can’t do this.”

He kissed her again, muttering against her mouth, “Why not?”

“I can think of half a dozen reasons off the top of my head.”

That seemed to stop him, but he didn’t let go of her.  Jake just looked at her quizzically, as if he saw absolutely nothing wrong with the fact they were kissing.  He apparently didn’t realize he had a dual personality and was a complete shit half the time he existed.  He finally looked up, taking a deep breath.  When he refocused on her, his eyes hardened into something wild. Something feral.  Something passionate.  And a little scary.

“Blame it on the stars,” was all he said before his mouth captured hers again.  This kiss was different from the first.  Where the first one was tentative and exploratory, this kiss was devouring.  It was like he’d gotten a taste of nirvana and craved more.  It was heady, the way his tongue was mating with hers in a fiery kiss that was quickly undoing her cell by cell.  Her last coherent thought was that Simon was going to kill her.

When he came back around to the front of the barn, she was sitting on top of a bale of hay, holding up a brown paper back with a grease stain on the bottom. Mooch, traitor that he was, perched at her feet, looking up at her adoringly, waiting for her to drop the bag.

“Mama sent some chicken and biscuits.”

He grunted an acknowledgment, and pulled his hat lower over his eyes so he didn’t have to see the pain in hers.

She stood, setting the bag down next to her, and sauntered over to the stall where he was spreading fresh straw.

“What’s wrong?”

He couldn’t think of the words to say to her. Everything that came to mind was wrong, and Brent knew that there was no way to have this conversation without hurting her. But he had to, or else he would end up hurting her worse in the long run.

As he kicked straw around the floor of the stall, he knew he was being stupid. For the last two weeks, all he’d talked about was how badly he wanted her to stay with him. And now he was about to do this…

He finally stopped when she said, “Brent. You’re scaring me. Is this about me not being able to have kids?”

“No.” Brent brushed past her to go to the feed room. Rattling the bucket brought in the mare, an enormous equine with a shaggy coat and bones showing through loose skin. She followed him into the stall, as he emptied the bucket into her feed trough, and then started pulling the injections from his pockets and preparing them silently.

When he had the first one ready, he finally got the guts to raise his head and look at Casey and deliver the brilliant line he’d spent the past ten minutes coming up with. “I need to think about some stuff.”

Her mouth dropped, and Brent lowered his head to the mare’s shoulder. While she was distracted, eating, he pinched some skin between his gloved fingers and stuck in the needle, pushing the plunger.

Brent had no idea what happened next. All he was aware of was a swift intake of breath, before he saw a wall of brown crush into him, then a jumble of whinnies, a frantic woof, a shrill scream, some clatters, then hoofs aimed at his chest, before blackness took over.

Anne Conley lives in a small town in East Texas, with her husband, two kids and numerous goats. She brazenly stole her pseudonym from her great-grandmother, a true pioneer woman who raised seven kids alone: churning butter, plucking chickens, knitting clothes, and putting coal oil on every visible wound. Anne’s Stories of serendipity feature real people, living life and finding love in a small town. She also has a Paranormal Romance series, the Four Winds about archangels “falling” in love and coping with turning into humans Her writing is escapist therepy, and she succumbs to it every chance she gets.

 Teaser:

Amy knocked on the door before entering and saw him at his computer.  He looked up, and guilt shadowed his features before he clicked his mouse, probably minimizing a screen and turned to her.
“Hey, what’s up?”  He asked.
Amy walked over to him, holding out his drink.  “Nothing, I just brought you a drink.  Here.”
“Thanks.”  He took the offered drink and sipped it, gratefully.  Amy tentatively sat on the recliner facing his computer desk in the corner.
“What are you doing?”  Amy was trying to be conversational, but her tone of voice came off as more whiney than anything, and it disgusted her.
“Nothing.  Just surfing the web.  I don’t have time for any of that stuff at work,” he said flatly.
Trying to engage Bryan in conversation, she teased, “Any spicy pictures?”
Anger flashed in his eyes, and she immediately regretted her question.  “No.  I’m not looking at porn, Amy.”
“I was joking, Bryan. Relax.”  She took a sip of her whiskey and set her glass down before walking over behind the stool Bryan was sitting on and rubbing his shoulders.  “You just seem tense lately, that’s all.  I was trying to loosen you up.”  She stood close to him, as she rubbed his back, running her nails up and down it, before sending her hands back up to his neck to rub there.  She grazed his back with her hips, in an attempt to entice him a little.
“Yeah, work’s been rough.  Deadlines and new clients.”  He took another sip of his drink and said, “I’m going to join a gym and work out on my lunch break.  That might help some of the stress.”
Jealousy and disappointment flashed through Amy, but she snuffed it out, forcing the tendrils of negative emotion down deep in her psyche.  She had suggested that they join a gym several years ago, in an effort to find something for them to do together.  Apparently, he didn’t remember that.  Forcing the hurt from her voice, she said, “That sounds like a good plan.”  She rubbed his shoulders for a little while longer, but Bryan seemed to just get tenser.  So she stopped, feeling stupid.
“Well, I’ll let you get back to surfing.”  She left to go finish the dishes, wondering what exactly he was looking at online.  If not porn, then what?  She wouldn’t really care if he was looking at porn, she’d been known to do it a time or two, herself.  She was glad that he was doing something about his stress level, even if it did mean that he wouldn’t be coming home for lunch any more, but she couldn’t help but feel like he was trying to spend less time with her.  And it hurt.
