Bonus Scene

To Live Again
by Melody Dawn
Getting back from Chipotle’s with Jayson, I go into my room and lie down on the bed. I’m not sure what to think of him. Of course, he’s gorgeous and seems interested in me, but for how long and why? I think it’s probably best that we just stay study partners. This way when his attention moves elsewhere, I’m not the even more broken girl in the corner. With my mind made up, I drift off to sleep.
I’m dreaming a really awesome dream about Jayson without a shirt until I’m rudely awakened by my dear best friend jumping on my bed. “Hey chick, wake up! So, what happened with you and that beautiful hunk of man after you left?” I roll my eyes and say, “Uh, nothing! He took me back to campus; we both had more classes. Why? Where did you go with his twin?”
She blushes and I lean towards her. “Why do you smell like him?” She has this look in her eye and I have a feeling I know what happened. But, all she says is he gave her a hug. Yeah, I bet he did…like an after sex hug that says “Let’s do this again.” I saw the two of them eye-** each other while we were all having lunch. I almost say something about him being a player, but I just keep my mouth shut. Madison and I do not have the same ideas towards casual sex so it wouldn’t do me any good to say anything. If that is what she wants with Connor Reece, then who am I to say anything; I just hope he doesn’t hurt her. Wow, first Jayson and now Connor; I evidently do not have a huge respect for the male gender.
Lying down next to me, she insists I tell her everything about how Jayson and I met. When I get to the part about him being in my desk, she starts laughing like a crazy person. “Oh my god, did you really go up and tell him to move,” she gasps out. I give her a punch in the shoulder and say, “Yes! You know how I like to sit in the same seat in every class.” Laughing even harder, she says, “If he still wanted to take you to lunch after learning about your insane tendencies, you need to grab him and hold on!”
“Oh what the hell ever,” I say heatedly! But, not really meaning it. We love to tease each other and she thinks my somewhat OCD brain is hilarious. I tell her that I think he is interested, but I’m not going to let it go anywhere. Her mouth drops open and with big eyes, she says, “Why? That guy is really into you. Even Connor says so.” I feel a little glimmer of hope in my stomach, but I bury it and say, “Because I just know how it will be and I don’t need to be heartbroken on top of everything else.”
Madison is quiet for a few moments and she finally says, “You are going to wish that you didn’t let this opportunity pass you by. You don’t have to marry him, but what is wrong with being with someone who obviously likes you for however long it lasts?” I can’t explain it to her, I just know that he will break me. And I’m already broken beyond repair. Besides, a guy like him, needs someone who is living and not just existing.
Seeing that she isn’t going to get anything else out of me, Madison sits up and hugs me; then says she has to go and study. I tease her and say she is going to be daydreaming about Connor instead of studying, and she just blushes with no answer. As she walks out the door without saying her usual sexual insinuations, I wonder if maybe she really likes this guy. I lie there a little while longer thinking about Jayson. I may not let things go anywhere with him, but here in my room, he is mine. I can think about him and what we could have been. It might sound sad, but in my mind, it gives me hope that maybe one day, I will have what I am imagining. Of course, it won’t be with him, but maybe someone else who isn’t quite so dangerous to my heart and soul.

Author Interview with Melody Dawn

Can you tell us your latest news?
The latest news is that this is going to turn into a series. I always only intended to write one book, but Jayson, the H in my story, has a twin brother; and he is getting his own book. His character developed in a much bigger way than I expected.
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I never intended to actually become a writer. I had a story in my head for several years that I thought might make a good book, but I never really believed it would happen. As far as considering myself a writer, I’m still not sure that I do.
Now I love music just as much as reading, I normally listen to music while I am reading. Do you think that you characters have theme songs? What would they be?
Definitely! For Chloe, the main female character, it would be Invincible by Kelly Clarkson, Jayson, the main male character, it would be All of Me by John Legend, Connor (Jayson’s twin)-Forever Night Stand by Rayen Belchere, and Madison (Chloe’s best friend) would be Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson
Are the experiences fact based or from your imagination?
Possibly some things in the story may be true…obviously, Chloe’s tragedy isn’t real, but some other things yes, just not saying which J
Which comes first? The character’s story, or, the idea for the novel?
I think each writing project varies. For To Live Again, it was the story that came first, but for the second book, it was definitely the character. There is possibly a third book and the character and the story both kind of hit me at the same time.

The Dead Game

By Susanne Leist

About the Book

coverLinda moves to a seaside town to live a quiet life. She opens a bookstore and makes new friends. Life is simple–that is until the dead body washes up on shore. Linda is horrified to find that dead bodies and disappearing tourists are common for this small town. As soon as the sun sets, the residents and tourists are stalked by dark shadows. But this is only the beginning.

Linda and her friends receive an unsigned invitation to a party at a deserted house. They are pursued through revolving rooms and dangerous traps, barely escaping with their lives. Two of their own remain trapped in the house. Or so they think.

They must embark on a difficult journey, chased by unnatural creatures, not knowing whom to trust, to uncover the one controlling the game and everyone in town. Who are The Dead? Are they humans or vampires? Or a combination of both? Will there be an end to their evil game?

Will Linda and Todd find love? Will a second book be needed?

The Dead Game has begun.

Chapter 22

Their car neared the house. A stunning sight unfolded before their eyes. Encased in a tight circle of trees, shimmering from the lights strung through their heavy branches, the glass house sparkled against the dark night sky: a huge glass ball shooting green sparks of light from within its rounded walls. Its great dome twinkled as radiantly as the multitude of stars shining down from above.

Todd left the car with the valet and led the way up the marble stairs to the rounded front door. Two armed men, dressed in tuxedos, guarded the door, their holstered guns only slightly marring the fantasy image running through Linda’s vivid imagination: for as soon as she turned away to admire the scenery, she was once again in fantasyland.

pic for excerptThe panorama facing her was doused in white. Gleaming white snow caps covered the tops of the tall trees and the great dome of the house. Snow was falling on them from somewhere. She could feel snowflakes melting on her lips. They felt wet, like real snowflakes. She touched her face and hair. Her hand came away wet. She had snow on her fingertips. She searched the grounds for a snow machine, but couldn’t locate anything—not on the glass domed roof or in any of the trees. She couldn’t have, genuine snow was falling on them from the dark sky. The landscape resembled a winter wonderland despite it being fall in Florida.

Todd placed his hand against her back to escort her into the house. The others followed them into the glowing green ball that was alive with dazzling lights, music, and laughter.

Once inside, Linda was mesmerized by the glittering glass walls that mirrored the dancing images of the guests twirling around the marble dance floor. These images were cast in bright halos of light reflected from the myriad of crystal chandeliers hanging throughout the room.

Soft candlelight from mounted crystal sconces flickered across the intricate patterns carved into the green walls. It was the most beautiful and fascinating house that she had ever seen. She glanced back and watched Shana’s mouth drop open. She was certain that Shana would agree that the house appeared simply magical.

Couples were swirling around the immense dance floor. They were dancing in a large studio between Diane’s life-sized statues. Each sculpture was carved from clear glass: each one revealing a full-sized person. Linda found them to be too lifelike. She stood next to one and stared into it frozen face. She was startled by a fleeting expression of horror that seemed to cross over its features; as if a real person was trapped inside, staring out at her from within his glass tomb. Then the look was gone and the statue appeared lifeless once again.

Author Interview

It is my pleasure to welcome Susanne Leist, author of The Dead Game, to Room With Books.

Please tell us about The Dead Game.

My book, The Dead Game, is a paranormal mystery. It takes place in a small town, called Oasis, on the coast of Florida. During the day, this town is a paradise for its residents and abundant tourists with its picturesque streets, white-sand beaches, and warm waters. However, at night, the town turns dark and deadly. Dark shadows roam the streets. Tourists begin to disappear and bodies turn up dead on the beach. The evil in this town revolves around a deserted house. The younger residents are invited to a mysterious party at End House, and that is when the fun and games begin.

Who is your main character?

My main character is Linda Bennett. She moves to a small town to open a bookstore with an attached coffee shop. She wants to lead a quiet and peaceful life. But she is in for a surprise, since Oasis is anything but peaceful.

What should we know about her?

Linda is a good person who wants to be liked by everyone. She is sweet and kind. She develops a crush on Todd, but at first, she is too shy to speak to him. Her friendship with Shana brings her out of her shell and at times, gets her into trouble. She develops the nerve to speak with him and to voice her own opinions.

What is the main conflict? What messes up her life?

Her crush on Todd brings complications to her life. She finds him to be aloof. At first, she is drawn to his mysterious nature. But as she gets to know him better, this mystery soon becomes off-putting to her. She believes he’s hiding secrets from her; secrets that have to do with the elusive residents, and the murders and disappearances in town.

What is her personal goal?

Her personal goal is to help save the town from the evil threatening to kill them. She doesn’t know if the evil controlling the town is human or a supernatural creature, but she is determined to find and destroy him or her with the help of her friends. She has a secondary goal of getting to know Todd better, and she has better luck with this than her first goal.

How did you come to write your first book and how long ago was it?

I have been reading murder mysteries and thrillers since I was a teenager. I’ve read all types of mysteries, from Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes. In recent years, I’ve begun to read paranormal mysteries. These books bring fantasy and the surreal to the simple murder mystery.

It is hard to find books that combine paranormal with mystery. That is why I have decided to write a paranormal, murder mystery of my own. It is the type of book that I search for and love to read.

My book, The Dead Game, has dead bodies and suspects like a traditional murder mystery. However, it also has humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives. And don’t forget the haunted house—we must have one of these.

When you sit down to write a new story, do you know what the ending will be before you start or does it evolve as you write?

This is the first book that I’ve written. I began with a basic idea in mind. I wanted a murder to take place in a small town. This murder would involve a house that was rigged with supernatural or mechanical traps and moving rooms. But I had no idea how the story would evolve or end. The end turned out to be a surprise to even me.

What do you do when you are not writing or reading?

When I’m not writing, I enjoy being with my family. My daughters and I love fashion and we love to shop. My husband gets dragged along. I swim twice a week and read every day.

If you could holiday anywhere in the world, where would you choose and why?

I would love to travel everywhere in the world. The only countries I’ve visited so far are Canada, England, and Israel. There are so many places I would love to see. At least I could visit them in books.

Like most authors, I imagine you are an avid reader.  Who are your favorite authors? Do you read many books by indie authors?

My favorite author is Brad Meltzer. It is fun and easy to read his books. His words flow smoothly and keep me engrossed in the stories. I like his characters. He weaves his extensive knowledge of Washington into the story lines.

I buy a book by the description on the back cover and not by the author’s name. This has led me to explore books written by a wide variety of indie authors. I found Brad Meltzer by his book’s description before I heard about him as an author.

Where do you normally find your reading material – from your local library, a bookshop, Amazon or somewhere else?

I buy books anywhere I can find them. If a book catches my eye, then I buy it. I buy online and in book stores.

Are you working on a new book at the moment?

The Dead Game is the first book in a series. The first book resolves the murder mystery, but at the same time, opens a Pandora box of new mysteries. Its surprise ending will lead to more surprises.

Once my book is further established in the marketplace, I will begin work on the second book. I have an outline and notes all ready to be used to write the next book. My writing often leads me in unknown directions, so I won’t know how the book will end until it does.

Susanne Leist graduated with an M.B.A. in Finance. Wherever life has led her, through the hectic commodities’ markets or the number-crunching field of budgeting, she’s continued to read and daydream. Unbeknownst to her, she had been pursuing her dream all along, her dream of putting her words down on paper for everyone to enjoy. She currently resides on Long Island with her husband, two daughters, and Maltese.

Her first book, The Dead Game, is a paranormal thriller with humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives. Her goal has been to write a book different than the usual vampire story or murder mystery. She wanted a murder mystery with victims, clues, and suspects. She created that and much more. The book has revolving rooms, traps, falling cages, and anything her active imagination could create. The Dead Game is a fun ride into the realms of the supernatural.

The Dark War Chronicles Book 4

Past Demons

By A.L. Kessler

With her freedom stolen from her by the Father, Tegan had never lived a life of her own. Whisked away to be a bound human to Lucius, she never knew what it was like to have a mate to love and cherish her. Now after losing three hundred years of memories, Tegan needs to rediscover everything she’s worked for and learn every lesson again, but this time something is different. Kaden claims that he is her fated mate.
The reason for Kaden’s exile from the Demon world is no secret: he beheaded his own king. The one thing that makes his exile bearable is being close to Tegan. When Tegan returns he knows he finally has his chance to make her his, but two people stand in his way: Lucius and Tegan’s brother, Zaaren.
The war rages on. With the rumor that someone has raised the Father and the Originals showing signs of waking, the bloodshed will only get worse.
A.L. Kessler is a paranormal romance and steampunk author residing in Colorado Springs. Since she was a teenager she’s loved weaving stories and spinning tales. When she’s not at the beck-and-call of the Lord and Lady of the House, two black cats by the names of Jynx and Sophie, training a playful puppy named Zelda, playing with her daughter, or killing creepers and mining all the things with her husband of four years, she’s either reading, participating in NaNoWriMo, or writing in her Blog Writing Rambles.

Kass ran her hand against one of the evergreen trees that dominated Lucius’ mountain side property. Snow still dusted the peaks above the tree line, forming a nice white cap. The sounds of wild life running about around the land graced her ears and called to her panther, but she was forbidden from shifting. Some type of metaphysical block had been placed so she could feel her panther but not call it to the surface herself, the beast even leaned against it, fought against it, but nothing worked. She cursed Lucius and took a deep breath. Cold mountain air cleared her lungs, easing her anger as the crisp smell of spring leaves and another panther filled her senses. Her heart skipped a beat. Impossible. With another breath she knew there was no mistaking the scent.

Footsteps echoed behind her, she spun in time to see a blur fly towards her and knock her to the ground. Air rushed from her lungs, but she managed to recover and rolled. Pinning the stranger to the ground with a hand to his throat, she met his gaze, sky blue eyes set in a soft face. The almost-too-delicate-for-a-male jaw line was sun kissed, and that amazing tan continued to the chiseled line of his abs and the delicious view disappeared into a pair of faded blue jeans. Kass licked her lips as the idea of tracing her tongue up his chest crossed her mind.

“Hey princess, eyes are up here.” He grumbled, putting an arm between them and pushing her off.

She didn’t fight him as she backed off and raised her eyes to meet his again. Now his shaggy light brown hair, a tad too dark to call blond, shadowed them, making the blue look darker. The panther in her urged Kass to nuzzle the stranger in front of her as they recognized the scent. “You’re a panther.”

“Just like you.” He nodded giving her a slow, sexy grin that showed just a hint of teeth with enough attitude to make a woman melt. “Do you pin every cat you meet to the ground?”

She snorted and looked away, toying with a strand of her hair. “Only the ones who pounce me first.”

He sat up and leaned in close to her. “I was just excited to see a female cat. Lucius said that there were none.”

Her cat tried to rush to the surface and caused Kass to stiffen as it hit the block in her. “He apparently had no intentions of us meeting, because he never mentioned you either.”

“I’m Jaxon.” He leaned in and nuzzled her neck in a classic greeting. She sighed against him, taking in his scent and missing the type of contact he offered.

She returned the greeting, rubbing against him, “Kassity.” The longer she touched him the more her beast hesitated against the block in her, calming and edging back to wherever it hid inside her.

“My beast rises to your touch.” He whispered with his lips against her cheek.

Heat tinted her face red. “And yours calms mine.” Panic crept up on her as she struggled to breathe, his scent overwhelming her. She scooted away from him, the wet grass soaking through her pants. He crawled towards her the muscles in his arms moving like liquid grace. He peered up at her through his shaggy hair.

She expected to see hurt in his eyes, but they were narrow and calculating how to get what he wanted. Her. She froze when she felt her beast collide with the block inside her, knowing that it was Jax’s beast that called to her. Clenching her fists, she fought against the instinct to call to him and his cry of need. As she closed her eyes, she tried to find her fading connection with the cat inside her, tried to control and channel it. The want to run in fear of the male overcame the beast and tried to force its way out.

Kass’ jaw tightened as he moved closer. He straddled her legs and kissed her. Parting her lips with his tongue caused her cat to hesitate. Her body tightened in all the right places as she melted into the kiss and allowed him access to her mouth. She pulled her legs under her to get closer to him. He moved so he knelt in front of her and cradled her face with his big hands. Her beast settled against the block, content with the connection.

The tingling of happiness broke when their lips were ripped apart. Kass opened her eyes just in time to see Lucius throw Jaxon a few yards away. Kass swallowed and backed away from the vampire while Jaxon let out an inhuman snarl, but remained where he was.

Lucius glared at him. “Stand down cat, she isn’t yours.”

“That’s not your choice.” Jaxon stood. “If our beasts-“

“Your beasts will not be meeting again.” Lucius spun to Kass. “Room. Now.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but when she met the narrow pure black eyes of Lucius she thought better. She stole one last look at the male panther before running back to the mansion.

Renee downed another drink from her housemate. Another whiskey down after an hour of drinking games made the room spin around her. Danielle laughed and grabbed Renee’s wrist. “Okay birthday girl, I think you’ve had enough.”

Renee shook her head. “Nooo, I need more. Rum. Where is the rum?” She stood and tried to get to the kitchen, but Danielle held her back.

“It’s gone.” Someone else in the house cried out.

“Why is the rum always gone?” Renee asked, feigning a pirate voice. She giggled as she headed towards the kitchen, escaping Danielle’s clutch. She searched through the bottles but froze when a person she didn’t know passed on the other side of the counter. Swearing, she saw an animal waver behind him, just like she had with Coran at the bar. Then she blamed it on being stressed. Now she blamed it on being drunk. Placing her shot glass on the counter, she drew in a couple deep breaths and closed her eyes. When she opened them the room stopped spinning and the man with the shadow was no longer in the room.

“You okay?” Danielle’s voice made Renee jump.

Nodding, she pulled away from her friend. “I just need some fresh air.”  She grinned.

Danielle motioned to the door. “You know where the door is, use it.”

Renee stumbled outside and took a deep breath, closing her eyes again. The heat from the day still clung to the air and thoughts from the chase the night before returned to her. Footsteps still echoed in her head, reminding her of the men who chased her. Her eyes flew open when someone grabbed her wrist. Stumbling, her heart pounded as she shoved at the stranger, frantically slapping him with her other free hand, trying to get them to let go. Drinking made her more clumsy than normal, but she tried to pry the man’s hand off her. The world spun around her as she struggled with the stranger. The man’s grip bruised her arm as he pulled her off her stumbling feet. Renee crashed to the ground taking her attacker with her. He landed next to her with a yell and two other men came running. Her eyes widened when she could see the other forms — a wolf, a big cat of some sort, and a bear. A scream bubbled up in her throat, but one of the other men clapped a hand over her mouth. She tried to kick, but her alcohol-laden system moved too slowly to surprise him.

“Shut it, you little bitch.”

An accent she couldn’t place tinged his voice. She thrashed against the man, her mind racing through the worse possible scenarios.

Within a moment the man disappeared, yanked away from her. Renee glanced up, surprised filling her hazy brain when she recognized the hunky bartender. Coran held an attacker in the air by the shirt collar, a foot off the ground. She couldn’t believe it, exactly what kind of bartender was this guy? Coran smirked at her and in that moment the image of the wolf flickered behind him, snarling. She swallowed and gave him a shy wave.

He set the man down. “I suggest you run before I rip your head off.”

The man quickly nodded in agreement and he and his comrades took off. Coran turned back to Renee and held a hand out to her. “What was that all about?” he asked as he pulled her up. She stumbled into him. “Are you drunk?”

“Beats hot milk and butter.” She grinned before turning in the direction the attackers ran off in. “Those butt faced miscreants.”

Coran laughed and put an arm around her trying to lead her back to the house. “That’s a new one.”

Renee leaned into him, using him for balance. Here she was drunk and about to screw up a chance with the hot bartender…again. “I don’t want to go back in there.” Her mind flashed to all the images flickering behind people and tears formed in her eyes. She was tired of these forms reappearing. She swore that time of her life was over.

“What? Why? It looks like a fun party.” He turned to her and tilted her chin up to meet her eyes. “Are you crying?”

She sniffled, trying to keep the little drops from falling. “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to…gosh darn it! I’ll leave if I want to.”

“I’m so going to be dead for this.” He grumbled and picked her up, cradling her against his chest. “How drunk are you?”

“You’re only going to be mostly dead.” She laid her head against his chest. “And I’m not as think as you drunk I am.” She could feel his chest rumble with laughter as he started to walk away from the house. He tucked her into the passenger side of his truck, buckled her in and kissed her forehead.

“To the bat cave,” she muttered and pointed out the windshield.

He got in on the other side, chuckling as he started the truck. “Something like that, sweetheart.”

The sun was rising as Orion left the club. He had changed from his stage clothes into his regular torn jeans and t-shirt. He wandered to the coffee shop and saw the man there again. Shaking his head, he realized who he was now. Kaden. Jaxon had mentioned meeting the demon here when he took the job to find the stone. He inclined his head to the demon, before continuing in to get coffee. He intended to enjoy the cup outside in the sun before going home and sleeping.

His eyes scanned over the crowd, but there was no Tegan. His heart dropped at that, what he would give for her just to walk in and get her coffee like normal. He sat down and sipped his coffee, growling when a shadow came over him. “What?” He met the gaze of Danielle who blinked at him a few times.

“Grumpy without your morning coffee, are ya?” She put her hands on her hips. “Really Orion, I just came to tell you that we have a surviving victim.”

He nearly jumped out of his chair, but forced himself to remain calm. “A surviving one, are they conscious?”

“No, not yet, but her vitals are stable. I was hoping you’d come to headquarters and see her. Look at the bite again, maybe talk to her if she wakes up. I did some research, but I wasn’t able to find anything.” She sat down across from him. “I’m at a loss, Orion, the Elder Masters keep giving me these assignments that seem impossible. This is one of those. It’s like they want to peg Lucius with this.”

Something in her eyes made him want to console her, reach out and kiss her and whisper calming words to her. He couldn’t figure out if it was the desperation in her voice, or the pleading in those big blue eyes, but something drew him to her. He glanced at her red lips. They almost had a pout to them, perfectly kissable, but he needed to focus. He jerked his gaze away from her mouth and reminded himself not think with his lower head. “Do you have anyone there you can trust?”

“Possibly Joey, but I don’t know enough about him to confide what I think. That being said, I’m hoping no one asks any questions about you being there.”

“I didn’t agree to go,” He muttered and sipped his coffee. “The idea of being stuck in Hunter’s HQ with a victim makes me queasy.”

She snorted and tucked her hair behind her ear. “It’s not like I’m going to lock you in there and I’m sure you can just poof yourself out of there, dusty.”

He glared at her over his coffee. “Did you just call me ‘dusty’? Like fairy dust? Seriously?”

“Would you prefer Tinker Bell?”

No, no he wouldn’t. She smiled and the sun caught her eyes. He wondered where the flirting came from. “Okay, let’s get this over with. I want to sleep at some point.”

“Work all night? Or were you out working for Lucius?”

“I was at the club, there’s not a whole lot that I can do for Lucius right now. Not unless I want to open a vein.” He stood and stretched, a quick look at the human and then he would be able to go home and sleep.

She stood with him, “I’ll drive us, it’ll be easier to get you in if you’re riding with me. Less questions, less security, and please tell me you aren’t carrying weapons.”

“Not in this realm. I can summon them if I so choose, but I promise that I won’t do that. I won’t put your rank in danger, Danielle, I know the society means the world to you.”

She bit her lip and turned away from him. “The society is the only family I have that understands my hate for the blood suckers.”

“You have living family then?” he asked lightly as he followed her.

“Yeah, a mother and father, I’m an only child and when my attack happened they thought I was crazy. They think that the Hunting Society is a military branch that allows me to use special skills and they provide everything I need to stay sane.”

Orion nodded. “But at least you have them, it’s a lonely world without family.”

“Family isn’t always blood.”

He recalled saying something similar to Renee when she first came around. “Yeah I know, but it seems to me that my family is falling apart.”

“Do you keep in contact much with the Fae world?” She pulled out her keys and unlocked a shiny black SUV with tinted windows.

Orion raised a brow. “Standard issue?”

“Yep, though I chose the color.” She laughed. “Most of us prefer black, we’ve got one smart ass at this HQ who has a lime green one. You can spot him a mile away.” She shook her head as she climbed in.

Pulling himself into the passenger side, he looked at the sleek leather interior. “They don’t skimp on the details, eh?”

“They treat us well, as they should, but we’re also only partially funded by the government, a lot of our money comes from syndicates that like to remain anonymous.” She started the vehicle and drove out of the parking lot.

He watched the cars go by and didn’t speak until they got on the highway, “I should be honored that you’re taking me to headquarters.”

“Yes, because not many outsiders see it, but I trust you. I don’t know why, because you work for Lucius, but I trust you.”

What do you do if you discover the life you’re living isn’t the one you were meant to have?
Tori Farrell’s path has been a long one. She was raised by a Motorcycle Gang called the Dragons, trained as an assassin, and lived by the sword in a world consisting of drugs, sex, violence and murder. She made her escape, and even successfully thwarted a second attempt to draw her back in.
Returning to her safe new life, Tori faces unforeseen challenges, as the discovery of her Rock Star relation, Brian Madson, gives way to the desire to have the life she was born to live. Haunted by fear, and caught in a fierce battle between her husband and brother, she must learn to accept her dark past and face her future boldly. The FBI and The Organization still linger in the shadows, and time is creeping forward, pushing her to choose. Which path will she take, and where will it lead, when she is forced to decide between destiny and fate”
Anyone who knows me could tell you, I am a friendly kind of person, never met a stranger and take up conversations any where at any time. I work hard, and my mind never seems to shut down, as I wake up often in the middle of the night with ideas pouring out and demanding to be dealt with. Of course that means much of my books were written in the middle of the night.
I grew up and still live in the great state of Texas where everything is bigger, where we have warm weather and a central location. I love my state, my town, and my family, which includes my four sons, my significant other, and many friends as well.
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing the books that are currently available and hope you will enjoy reading them just as much. And of course, there will be many more stories to come.
Character Interview
What is your name?  Tori Farrell
Do you have a nickname? Baby Girl
What is your hair color? Dark brown, almost black
What is your eye color?  Blue
How old are you? 24 years old
Where were you born?  I don’t know… I was taken as a child and don’t know much of anything about where I came from
Where have you lived since then? I grew up in Brazil, and I lived on the road with the Dragons for 5 years .
Where do you currently call home? I live in Texas with my husband, Michael.
What is in your refrigerator right now? Fruits, meats and cheeses, with a large pitcher of water and a half gallon of milk
What is on your bedroom floor? Carpet
What is on your nightstand? A switchblade knife and a 9 mm pistol… well under it or in it really…
What is in your garbage can? Ordinary stuff
Who are the people you are closest to? My husband, Michael and my best friend, Trish
Who is your funniest friend? Lindsay (Lins), although I haven’t seen her in over a year
What is your biggest fear? That my friends and family will pay for my past
What is your most treasured possession? I don’t treasure things… I treasure people
What or who is the greatest love of your life? Michael is my soul mate; he is the man I am meant to build my life with…
What is your favorite journey? I have been on a journey all my life; what I want most is a place to call home, without the fear of losing it
Which living person do you most despise? Warren La Buff, who hates me for who I am, and cannot seem to give me a chance
What is your greatest regret? That I did not try to help Henry, and I let him die in front of me
Which talent would you most like to have?  It’s not a talent, but the thing I would like to have most is the chance to have a family of my own; the ability was taken from me years ago, and I would give anything to have it back
What is the quality you most like in a man/woman? I love the fact that Michael knows and loves who I really am; he is accepting and kind, and wants what is best for me and for us
What do you most value in your friends?  Honesty; there is nothing I despise more than a disloyal or dishonest person, and always want to avoid those people… and being one of those people
Who is your favorite hero of fiction or in real life? Henry is my hero, for all that he did and endured for my sake
Which living person do you most admire? I admire Enrique; through all that we have been through, he has been the dearest of friends, the hottest of lovers, and a man I can count on to be there for me, even when he can’t call me his own
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I am more likely to be silent, than to overuse a phrase… any phrase
What is your motto? I always tell myself… “Come on baby girl… you can do this!”

Michael trudged on towards his current home, the one he and Tori had restored before she went away. Making it into the house, he began to strip, looking forward to the hot steamy cascade. ‘I’m so glad we bought the tankless water heater.’ He had suggested it for her, knowing how much she loved her showers, but tonight, he was going to enjoy the hell out of it.
As soon as he was clean, he leaned the top of his head against the wall, allowing the water to wash over his tired muscles. His mind unwinding, he thought about his wife; ‘I miss her so much. I wish I had some word on how things were going, or when I could expect her home.’ Images of her
flittering about in his head, he rested his hand against the wall where he often held her, allowing the idea of her beautiful nakedness to distract him for the moment.
Standing beneath the spray for a good 20 minutes, he finally decided he had had enough. Using the towel to pat himself dry and give his
sandy brown curls a good tussle, he slipped into the bedroom to put on his clothes and find something to eat. ‘Damn. I don’t even want to go back down to the café, and it’s probably past closing anyways.’
Glancing over at the clock as he pulled on his jeans, he confirmed the time. ‘Yup, I missed dinner. Oh well, got a couple of steaks in the fridge, I might as well cook me one of those.’ Pulling on his shirt, he froze, listening intently. ‘What the hell? That sounded like my wife, calling my name!’ Reaching the bedroom door, he bolted out into the hall, his heart pounding out of control.

MANscapes Journey into the light

By Manuela Cardiga’s

About MANscapes
“All women – from the most exquisite beauty to the plainest drab – want to believe in the Cinderella myth. Even the harsh-faced and sour-hearted, somewhere deep in their night-time struggles with their bitterest reality, dare to dream some Prince could still see past the dense veil of unkind nature and time, to the delicate, frail-hearted beauty within.”

But Clara wasn’t Cinderella, waiting for her Prince, she was Sleeping Beauty poisoned by a deadly kiss. After 24 years Clara awakens from a living nightmare of abuse and discovers her life unfolding miraculously; but the true miracle is her own blossoming: the maturing of a frightened abused girl into a strong woman capable of love, laughter and joy. In Tahiti’s exotic landscape Clara finds her way from darkness to incandescent light, embracing in herself the strength of choice, and the power of decision.

MANscapes is a powerful parable of hope and renewal, a story of one woman’s discovery of herself and her journey into love.
Manuela Cardiga was born in Mozambique and raised in South Africa where she studied fashion design. She moved to Europe where she worked as a fashion designer, then moved to the crazy world of advertising as a graphic designer and copywriter. Manuela is a designer by profession, a cook by vocation, and a writer by compulsion. She currently resides in Lisbon, Portugal where she writes contemporary and historical fiction, designs book covers, illustrates children’s books, and mothers a gorgeous daughter while juggling a day job. She also dabbles enthusiastically in exotic, experimental cuisine, much to the discomfort of family and friends.

Clara is a young woman from a small town who comes to Lisbon to study Art. She has just begun her adventure of self-discovery in the extravagant bohemian world of the late 70’s, when her journey is abruptly cut short by a brutal rape by an acquaintance.
In the aftermath, Clara finds herself pregnant, and her family pressures her into marrying the man who assaulted her, and who claims “she was willing”. Clara is plunged into a nightmare of abuse that is to last two decades.
One day something changes. A chance encounter, a word spoken in passing by a stranger, and Clara awakens. Wakes and takes charge of her life. She frees herself of the nightmare and of her oppressor, but can she heal herself of the scars years of abuse have left on her spirit?
Determined to continue her interrupted journey, Clara goes to Tahiti to fulfill her childhood dream and “paint like Gauguin”.
On the magical island of Moorea, Clara enters a world of endless possibilities where she starts to blossom as a woman, and an artist. There, Clara meets the right man, and falls in love with the wrong one…
A return to Lisbon gifts Clara with vindication, closure, and triumph over her abuser, and yet her trials have just begun. She is about to discover the path of life rarely runs smoothly, and before she can reach for happiness, Clara must grow.
She must shed the abused girl and become a woman, capable of making the hardest of decisions, taking responsibility for herself and a new life.  Setting out on the
difficult road that leads to maturity, Clara must complete her journey from darkness into light.

When I started reading. I was four years old.
Oh I don’t. I am a story-teller. I wouldn’t be so presumptuous as to consider myself a writer. I am hopefully learning…
No, as a matter of fact, this novel is completely different to the previous one. That was a romantic comedy, and this is a much darker book. I think I tell the story in the character’s voices and each one is so different!
It’s a secret…
A career? No. It’s a life’s work; it’s a compulsion, a need.
Well, actually, I did, I designed it. There is a story to this cover. I had a childhood friend, a very gifted artist living on a tropical island, and I had always loved this particular painting of his, and so I asked him for permission to use it, and his response was that he felt it wasn’t good enough…
But I insisted, and it turned out incredibly beautiful. I sent him the final artwork for MANscapes, and he loved it. Unfortunately three days later, my friend tragically passed away.
In a way, I feel this book has become a tribute to him. Not just because of the cover, but because the story is about an artist finding her way home on a tropical island… Journeying into light. As he did.
Living Clara’s anguish, her struggle to leave her pain behind, to grow. I felt it, every bit of it: the oppression, the agony, and the ultimate achievement when she becomes a free human being. It was terrible and incredible. It was exhausting.”
So much! I am still learning how to write. I told you I am a story-teller, so my “thing” would be sitting in front of someone spinning a yarn. This writing is something I am still learning…
Be passionate about what you do. Tell the story for yourself, not an audience, not the critics. Do it because you have a story that needs to be told; because you can’t help yourself.
Clara’s story is not unique. There are many Claras out there. Many women are living in the hell of abuse, afraid to walk away because it’s all they know. Take that first step out of darkness. Once you do, you will be surprised to find the light meets you halfway. Life is not punishment, we all deserve happiness; but it’s not going to fall into your lap. You need to fight for it.
The thing is, once you do act, decide to fight? Something incredible happens: life, the universe –whatever you want to call it – steps into your corner. But you have to choose. The essence of effective living is choice. We choose.
Not all your choices will be right, not everything will work out. But it is YOUR choice, YOUR life. You will no longer be a passive victim things happen to; you will be a survivor, someone who makes things happen, who decides, takes charge and responsibility for her own life.
And remember, the only power anyone has over you, is the power you yield.
Submit, submit, submit, submit again; then submit yet AGAIN.  Never give up.
Please live. Don’t just survive from day to day. Make every moment worth remembering. You don’t need to do huge things, change the world. Just make every day worthwhile.
Whatever you do it with it love, be passionately in love with living.
Whether it’s making a meal for your family, punching tickets, writing law; whatever it is, do it with love. Don’t take a single moment for granted.
