Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Deadly Delusions by Barabara Ebel, M.D. for the purpose of an honest review.

It was my pleasure to read and review Deadly Delusions by Barabara Ebel, M.D.! I will look in on Dr. Ebel’s previously published novels and keep a keen eye open for her future works.

The writing in Deadly Delusions by Barabara Ebel, M.D. is very fast paced. The pace ensures the reader doesn’t become lost in the medical details that could, otherwise, become very cumbersome.

The rotation of medical students through a psychiatry unit is very thought-provoking. Dr. Ebel writes of medical situations, but keeps her characters believable and down-to-earth. I feel quite certain that this cast of characters has appeared, at least in part, in Dr. Ebel’s medical training and career somewhere along the way!

It is my pleasure to give Deadly Delusions by Barabara Ebel, M.D. five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee!

Annabel smiled. “Correct,” Selina said and leaned forward. “Now, tell us more about your background. Can you remember being involved with team sports or having many friends five or ten years ago?”

Victor raised his eyebrows in surprise. “I had a skateboard when I was little but stopped riding it. Later, I watched other kids play basketball. At first I wanted to shoot baskets like them but then I was unmotivated and they pretended I wasn’t on the spectator’s bench.”

“What about friends outside of basketball?”

Victor twitched one shoulder. “Nah. Over time, I was different from everybody at school. It was easier to go home where my mother let me buy turtles at first. Afterwards, I had two gerbils. Of course, I switched later to other things.”

Annabel made another key point for her ongoing paper project. ‘Progressive social isolation.’

“Having pets taught you to care for other living things,” Selina said, “so I’m glad you mother allowed you to keep them. Perhaps through the group therapy sessions, you can talk more at ease with patients like yourself. It’s a start … to be less withdrawn. Engaging in some activities with family or friends is productive and keeps patients like you centered in the real world.”

“Okay, doc.” He stood up. “I want to come back on Wednesday for that. Can I go now?”

“Yes, Victor, you may take off. Keep up the good work.”

“Good bye,” Annabel said. “Thanks for helping me with my education.”

Victor smiled. “As long as you don’t make fun of me,” he said.

“Never,” Annabel replied.

“You can write the update,” Dr. Keeton said when Victor left, “and I’ll sign the progress note if it meets with my approval. Our star paranoid schizophrenic is managing his illness.”

Annabel felt confident her note would be worthy of Selina’s signature.

A devastating meningitis outbreak is sweeping nationwide at breakneck speed. Although not blamed, brain surgeon Dr. Danny Tilson’s recent surgeries happened just before his hospital patients and staff acquired the frightening malady.

Danny becomes the pivotal player of an investigation when the CDC, a neurologist, and an infectious disease specialist are summoned for their expertise.  The root of the outbreak is an enigma, the sinister organism is a mystery, and the timeline of its victims is complicated.

Hang on for the ride as Dr. Danny straightens out his personal life while confronted with an epidemic of frightening proportions and consequences.  The pandemic of the millennium has no cure in sight!  And while Danny’s colleagues, patients and staff are falling dead around him, perhaps the most crucial question of all is – why has Danny been spared?

EXCERPT

“The E.R. doc must have explained what’s going on,” Danny said. “The hematoma Michael suffered in his brain must be managed by surgical evacuation otherwise his prognosis is going to deteriorate. The blood in there will continue to cause pressure on his brain or increase his intracranial pressure. We can’t let that happen, okay?”

“Dr. Tilson,” Stella said, “Do you have children of your own?”

“I do.”

She looked at her son, deeper into a sleep, and lowered her voice. “Then you may understand the bond and how scary it would be to have a child near death’s door.”

Danny briefly closed his eyes. “I’ll take care of your son, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson.”

After Danny finished examining Michael, he left. Tracy put another cotton blanket over the teen while his parents watched. Stella followed Tracy as she went out. “I hope Dr. Tilson does a good job,” she said. “I hope he felt our concern. We’re worried we may lose him.”

With a soulful stare, Tracy looked into her eyes. “Dr. Tilson understands your worry more than you know, Mrs. Johnson. He lost a daughter a few years older than your son.”
