Especially when the gorgeous fire-fighting guitarist offers to help her find the owner. They quickly become friends – which is all they’ll be, as far as Natalie’s concerned. But how long can Natalie ignore her undeniable attraction to the man with the Irish accent and the broken-down ’57 Chevy?

Exclusive Excerpt

I stare up at the house for a moment, my hands shaking on the steering wheel, wondering what I’ve got myself into. I do some breathing exercises to calm down, pick up the box, and get out of the car. I can barely stand, my legs are so wobbly.

Maybe I’m working myself up over nothing. So what if the woman in the picture looks like me? It could be a coincidence.

Or maybe, just maybe…

I walk slowly up the driveway and knock on the door, my heart racing. After a couple of minutes, I knock again. Maybe they aren’t home? Maybe they didn’t hear me? I try the doorbell.

After a minute, I hear heavy, muffled footsteps.

Oh god. I should have worn a better outfit. I quickly smooth my hair with my free hand and stand a bit taller. Am I going to meet my birth mother? Or, at the very least, an aunt or something? Or my grandmother? Although, if someone cared enough to take these pictures and put them in an album, why would they throw them away? Is that the sort of person I want to meet?

The door swings open. The person standing in front of me is most definitely not a granny.

“Can I help you?” he asks as he rubs his eyes.

“Oh, I, umm…”

My brain has stalled.

He shouldn’t be the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. But for some reason, he is. He looks like he’s in his late twenties, maybe early thirties. He isn’t wearing anything that spectacular, just a plain T-shirt and fleece pants. And his dark eyebrows are a bit thick for my liking.

But those lips…thin on top, full on the bottom, framed by a cleft chin and dark stubble. And those brown eyes fringed with black lashes…

He blinks. “Okay, then. Well, if that’s all…” He starts to close the door.

“Does this belong to you?” I yelp. I shove the box into his chest. He takes a half step back and sneezes as the dust flies up around him.

He frowns. “Is this the crap I took to the thrift store?” With a confused look on his face, he hands the box back to me and crosses his arms. He leans on the door frame, making his biceps strain against his T-shirt. His entire left arm is covered in swirling blue and green tattoos. “How did you find where I live?” he asks cautiously. He has a hint of an accent. Scottish, maybe?

I roll my eyes. “Don’t flatter yourself, I’m not stalking you.”

He smirks. “Good. I’ve already got too many stalkers.”

Alex’s hand came up slowly to cradle the side of her face, encouraging her to tilt her head, and she did. He deepened the kiss then, his tongue running across her lips and coaxing them to open for him. She opened with a sigh, and his tongue swept into her mouth, gently tasting. She kissed him back in return, leaning into him until she had one hand braced against his hard chest.

A needy moan escaped her, and he responded in kind. When he lifted his mouth from hers, she almost tipped into him, her knees not holding her upright anymore and her head spinning. Wow.

She took not one, but several long breaths to clear her head, looking down at a black and tan face staring up at her with soulful, dark eyes. Souze wasn’t shy about watching, apparently.

The thought brought her the rest of the way to her senses, because weird. Yeah. Weird.

She took a step back, and Alex let her. He’d done that since the beginning. Letting her go if she wanted. So why was it so hard to leave now even if she kept saying she should?

“Thank you,” she told him, not looking up into his eyes.

“But?” Alex’s voice came cool, deep, and so sexy it just wasn’t fair.

“But I should go. Especially because this is obviously not a professional thing now.”

“No. But none of your previous employers particularly cared if you left, did they?” He sounded reasonable. “Did they bother to try to check on you?”

“Not that I know of.” She said it slowly. She’d had her phone with her, and she’d been checking her e-mail. Both big mistakes, she knew now. But she’d been paid under the table and they didn’t really have a way to contact her after she disappeared.

“I think that’s a little odd.” Rojas lifted his hand, giving her plenty of time to avoid him, and brushed her hair back from her face. “Maybe this time, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone care about whether you disappear.”

Beautiful blue-gray eyes met his briefly before the woman dropped her own gaze to focus on someplace lower on his face, like his nose or mouth. Subtle. Most people would probably not even notice the way she avoided direct eye contact.

But then again, not many people made eye contact a challenge the way he and his colleagues did. It wasn’t on purpose, really; more of a common quirk in their personalities.

Funny, he hadn’t expected to see her again. Okay, maybe he’d been hoping to find her at Revolution MMA for those self-defense classes he’d recommended. But here she was. A weird tingle jolted through his chest.

This woman was about as non-aggressive as possible without cowering outright. Despite her upright posture, her hands hung at her sides in a loose, non-defensive position. Her left wrist was covered in a brace and it was easy to see she held something in her right hand. She was far enough back on the landing to easily drop down a step or two without having to back up more than a few inches.

But the mannerisms didn’t fit her energy, the straightness of her shoulders, or the set of her jaw. Whoever this woman was, she’d developed habits. She wasn’t a mouse by nature. He wouldn’t be as irritated to see these behaviors if these things came naturally to her.

Who had forced her to assume those mannerisms to survive?

“Mr. Rojas.” Her voice was steady.

Another sign of her being more than what she seemed, as far as he was concerned. The timbre was almost soothing, and he realized he’d balled his hands into fists. Well, shit. He let his hands loosen.

She presented the object she held in her right hand. “I think your daughter left this behind at the ER last night. I hope you don’t mind, but the logo for the kennels was on the inside label, so I googled the address.”

Slowly—because he didn’t want her to snatch her hand back—he took the glove from her. “Thanks.”

“The hospital lost and found was overflowing, and I wanted to make sure Boom got her glove back,” the woman continued, then bit her lip. “And I wanted to be sure to thank you.” Her cheeks took on a fascinating pale pink blush.

Caught by surprise, Rojas raised his eyebrows. “Me?”

Maybe his tone had been the right encouragement, because she looked up again, her gaze meeting his, and the chemistry shocked him right down to his toes, hitting every vital organ—including his balls—along the way.

Blue-gray, cool as a calm day out on the water, her gaze held his. “You were very kind last night, and I didn’t thank you then. I try to thank the kind people I meet. So thank you.”

Rojas cleared his throat. “You’re welcome.”

He didn’t know what else to say. He’d only given her some ice, a cup of coffee, and a card about the martial arts center. Boom had a good sense for people, and when she’d said the woman needed the referral for the self-defense classes, he’d been inclined to agree.

She broke their eye contact, and he felt the loss as if someone had broken the circuit on an electrical current. “I should be going now.”

“Wait.” He didn’t know what made him ask her to. But she paused, balanced on the balls of her feet at the edge of the landing. He was sure if he didn’t catch her now she’d be gone for good. “I didn’t get your name.”

“Oh.” She turned to face him. Another sign that she’d learned caution but she wasn’t afraid by nature. She was open. A people person. Or at least more of one than he was. “Elisa Hall.”

AnnauthorphotoWith over forty published books, Ann is “Queen of the Castle” to her husband and three sons in the mountains of West Virginia. In her past lives she’s been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist, a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead-though she will deny to her children that it ever happened.

From young, Ann has had a love affair with books and would read everything she could get her hands on. As Ann grew older, and her hormones kicked in, she discovered bodice ripping Fabio-esque romance novels. They were great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she’s never looked back.

Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her ‘sexy space’ and has accepted that her Muse has a severe case of ADD.

Ann loves to talk with her fans, as long as they realize she’s weird, and that sarcasm doesn’t translate well via text.

Excerpt

He sat silently. She forced herself to eat three bites of the salmon in quick succession, followed by a forkful of the steamed spinach and grilled zucchini. Her lack of appetite did not do the meal justice, but her audience forced her to play the part. Their air of civility wore on her. She’d rather be curled up, snacking on her dinner in bed and watching the latest movies she’d missed thanks to the whirlwind schedule she’d been maintaining.

But, no. She sat at a table with a perfectly respectable, smoking-hot- should-be- licked- often stranger. Damn her father.

Hell, if her father hadn’t sent him, she could have indulged in one of those carnal impulses which used to land her in the scandal rags during her university years. When the heat in her body continued to spread, warming her cheeks and breasts, she reached for the wine again. Maybe a glass or three would knock the temperature off her libido.

“You seem very relaxed, considering our present circumstances.” He sounded almost curious.

“I’m used to it.” She sighed and ran her tongue along her teeth, hoping no bits of veggie were embarrassing her. “Unfortunately.”

“Well, if you’re used to it, maybe you should consider a change in careers.” The odd comment, coupled with his pursed lips, dragged her attention away from her raging hormones to stare at him again. He watched her with no attempt to disguise the shrewd predator in his eyes. A fresh wave of awareness rolled over her.

He wasn’t any ordinary businessman, and his attempts at vanilla engagement, from his relaxed dress to his mannerisms, couldn’t disguise the difference anymore. Something far more dangerous than an unwanted matchmaking attempt lurked in his gaze.

Intrigue and wariness clashed inside.

“Why would I change careers? I’m destined to inherit the entire organization. I have to know how it works from top to bottom. Or are you one of those men who thinks marrying me will be your key to the executive office, and I’ll be at home hosting tea while popping out the requisite heirs?”

Jarod tugged his ear and set his utensils down. “Kit Kat, what the hell are you talking about?”

“My father, Mr. Parker. And stop calling me by that horrid nickname.” Irritation rose to the top of her desire and flamed. “I asked you to call me Katherine.”

“No. You told me to. I prefer Kit Kat. It suits your mercurial moods. What does your father have to do with my being on this plane?”

“Everything.” She leaned forward. “Miles told me Daddy sent you to the meeting and here. I am used to my father’s matchmaking—although he’s generally a great deal subtler than this. I suppose my birthday last month and the engagements of several of his associates’ children has him thinking.”

“Miles told you I’m here as a—”

“Seriously, Mr. Parker? A stud service. Yes, my father sent you to stand stud for his recalcitrant princess who will not settle down. Granted, you’re an exceptionally fine specimen, but I have no desire to wear the reins which undoubtedly go with your promising physique.”

Jarod’s mouth opened briefly then snapped shut. To her amazement—and ire—he started to laugh.

“What’s so funny?”

“You’re not mad your father might have sent me, Kit Kat. You’re mad you wanted me, and now you think you can’t have me.”

Rose Hill Plantation, Silvers’ residence. Parlor game of the 19th century called “Kissing the Corners” – a kissing game where a gentleman was stationed in each corner of the room and the ladies went to get a kiss. It was a ‘forfeit’ to redeem for losing in an earlier game. Emma, our heroine, finds herself faced with kissing Jack, the man she so wanted to kiss but this was her first time kissing. Would he kiss her or not?

Next was Jack. She walked to his corner, gazing into his glowing emerald eyes.

“Emma,” he whispered.

She heard voices behind her. The others had already finished. She was the last. Turning her head slightly, she looked for Caroline. She caught a glimpse of her sister in her buttercup yellow dress, talking to Abigail, Charles and the twins.

“I’m right here, Emma,” Jack said, drawing her attention back to him.

He was too handsome. She wanted to both kiss him and avoid him. A tingle in her belly spread up to her nipples.

When Jack smiled his devilish smile, Emma felt as though she would turn into a puddle at his feet. Her mouth went dry as she stood there, frozen.

“Why didn’t you ever write to me?”

The question rattled her, bringing her back to her senses. “I sent you a letter, but I never received one from you.”

He quietly chuckled. “I sent you a letter, hoping you’d respond.”

“I never received any correspondence from you,” she said.

“Hmm, I never got yours either.” His low drawl reached inside, soothing her. “But,” he continued, “I believe you owe me a kiss.”

She opened her mouth, but not a sound came out.

***

Jack stood still. She fidgeted. The silk dress clung to her breasts and her narrow waist. Her cage crinoline maintained a respectable space between them, regardless of how much he wanted her closer. He put his hands at the waist of her skirt and felt her tremble. She bit her lower lip. Oh, how he wanted to soothe that lip.

With a gentle tug, he pulled her closer. The motion unbalanced her, and her hands sought his arms. When she still didn’t lean up to kiss him, he brought her even closer, his eyes fixed on her lower lip as her teeth released it.

He wouldn’t meet her halfway. This could be the only time he’d have the advantage, and he didn’t want to waste it. Because Emma’s feet were slightly lifted from the floor, she gripped his arms tightly.

He brought her to him. As he kissed Emma, his tongue traced her lower lip before his mouth enveloped hers. He wanted her to open her mouth, and he prodded the crease between her lips, coaxing her with his tongue. She parted her lips but pulled her head back as his tongue invaded her mouth.

She tasted like strawberries and wine. It was an intriguing taste and he wanted more. She felt soft and warm against him. He knew he was pushing the limits of the game and propriety, but when he glimpsed her eyelashes feathered on her cheek, he almost growled. Abruptly, Jack released Emma and set her on the floor, his hands remaining at her waist. He could feel her shiver as she looked into his face, her eyes wide open. He smiled.

Within a second, she raced away from him as fast as she could in a ladylike manner. Jack smirked. She had enjoyed his kiss. With his head cocked to the side, he walked to the sideboard and poured himself a brandy.

***

When Emma had stepped away from Jack, she did everything within her power to control her nerves. Her lips felt swollen. His hands had left an impression on her waist—an impression that wasn’t his to make. Her next and last corner was Billy’s. He grinned at her as she tried to maintain a steady gait, but the memory of Jack’s kiss tingled down her spine, making her feel hot and cold simultaneously. Stop it! She gave her head a small shake and stopped, inhaling a large breath before returning Billy’s smile.

But she wanted to kiss Jack.

No, what he did was take advantage of the situation. How vulgar of him! Why did she crave more?

“Is something wrong, Emma?”

Conflicting thoughts clouded her mind, and she didn’t realize she was already in front of Billy. Politely dismissing his concern, she said, “No, no, nothing is wrong.”

Billy’s head lowered slightly for her. “Kiss me, or pay a higher price forfeit.”

Emma was curious about what the higher price might be, but, after Jack’s advances, she ignored it. Composing herself, she met Billy’s lips part way.

He didn’t play with her lips nor press to enter her mouth. In a very gentlemanly manner, he gave her a quick kiss and bowed away. No fire came from his lips as it had from Jack’s. If anything, she was gravely disappointed that Billy hadn’t tried to kiss her like Jack had. She should have been glad, but she wasn’t.

Like a good girl, she placed her hand on his sleeve and let him escort her back to the others. Caroline enticed them all to start charades. Jack was with them, a devilish grin on his face that Emma had the sudden urge to slap. When his glance fell her way, excitement raced through her veins, and she had the strangest sensation her nipples were tightening. Tamping down the fury of emotions Jack caused, she spent the rest of the evening at Billy’s and Caroline’s side and away from Jack.

Kyle Yeun didn’t start out bad and he doesn’t intend to end his life while on the wrong side of the law, either. Excerpt

She stepped forward inside his guard and put her left foot behind his right. Seeing her coming forward, he instinctively tried to step back and get his guard back up.

Nope.

She caught his ankle in an ashi harai, driving him backward and down toward where he expected his foot to be bracing his back-step. Tall as he was, he relied on his solid stance to keep his footing too much.

Instead, she threw her right arm up between the two of them and quickly swung it around in an exterior loop to place his still-retracting arm into an under armpit lock. He lost his balance and toppled, taking her with him. Which was fine.

She landed heavily on top of him, forcing grunts out of the both of them. Somehow, she wasn’t even going to mind the bruises. This was more fun than she’d had in a while.

“Minx.” He was breathless now and still a little stunned.

The clothes around her throat tightened as his left hand took hold, and he pivoted his hips under her. Throwing his left leg up, she found herself in the beginning of a triangle hold.

Really?

She got her feet under her and heaved herself—and him—up until she was half-standing and slammed him back on the ground. He loosened his hold. Pivoting to her right, she released his right arm so she could get into position to secure an arm bar on his left.

Before she could manage it, he rotated on top of her. “No you don’t.”

She half snarled, half giggled. “Yes, I do.”

And she blocked his right knee with her leg, raising her hips, placing the ball of her right foot on the ground near his other knee and pushing with her right. As he came off the floor, she pulled him to the left to continue the momentum of the roll…

…and landed on top of him.

He chuckled and repeated the move right back on her, rolling them even farther until they both hit the wall, laughing.

She buried her fingers into his hair and his hands gripped the back of her neck.

They met in a kiss, hard and hot and so incredibly good. If she’d been breathing hard before, she lost everything in that kiss.

Suddenly, she didn’t care about anything but his body against hers. He wasn’t her client anymore and she wasn’t on contract. This was between them, person to person. They were safe enough for an indulgence, here and now, later they might not be. They twisted and rolled, and he was under her again as she straddled him. His hands roamed over her as she had her way with his mouth.

She let him up for air for a second as she decided whether she wanted to lick his pulse or nip at his collarbone.

Kyle’s voice rolled over her, husky and dark, sending delicious shivers down her spine. “Let’s get rid of the pants.”

“You’re fearless,” he said, running a hand over her stomach.

Clearly he hadn’t registered her near panic when she’d thought he’d left her—and her country—high and dry. “No one’s fearless. It’s too dangerous,” she said.

“I don’t mean on the job. I mean here. With me. You barely know me, and you’re not embarrassed, or scared, or anxious about me being here, seeing you naked when most people feel the most vulnerable.”

She frowned. “I don’t feel vulnerable. Should I?”

“Most women would,” he replied, running his index finger lightly around her nipple.

“I’m not most women,” she said, almost arching into his touch.

“You’re not. You’ve been trained.”

She knew what he meant. He’d clearly been through the same training. Do what you have to do to protect your country’s interests. Decide how far you’re prepared to go. Know you can handle yourself if things go wrong. Give your body if you have to but not your emotions, not your thoughts, definitely not your love.

“As have you. You know who trained me. Who trained you?” She wondered if he was MI6, or maybe MI5 before he’d joined her father’s outfit.

He paused, his eyes searching hers. “The Regiment,” he said simply.

She forced herself not to react. “The Regiment” was insider code for SAS, the British Special Air Service. The black-ops unit so hard-core that she’d heard that people died just trying out to attend their training course. She was elated that she had someone so qualified to help her, and concerned too. What if she was being played? She knew people in black-ops divisions often had questionable morals and bendable ethics.

“I don’t know if I’m scared or turned on,” she said honestly.

“You should be both, love. I was in for a long time.” He stroked her gently through her panties.

She wanted to question him further. In fact, she had a duty to her country to find out what she could about him, but it wasn’t that that was driving her curiosity. It was a desire to know him. And she had to f*cking squelch that feeling immediately. She grabbed his hand and held it against her panties. She held his gaze. “I want to talk about that. But not now. Right now I don’t want to talk about anything. I don’t want to think about anything. I just want you.”

“I think it’s sweet that you think I’d tell you anything about my previous job, but I take your point.” He wasted no time in getting rid of her panties.

Her index finger found the button and lowered the window a crack.

Immediately, he raised his hands. “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m unarmed.”

Always good to hear. She cocked her head, perplexed. “Who are you?”

“Nick Geary.” Unsmiling, a muscle worked in his jaw. He held her hostage with his eyes. “We need to talk.”

Her heart tripped. No doubt about it. She’d never heard of any Nick Geary, never seen this man before in her life. Or had she? Why didn’t she know? Shouldn’t she? What could they possibly need to talk about? A new kind of panic engulfed her. She pounced on the button, closed the window, and laid on her horn.

Scowling, he mouthed some kind of oath.

The driver door swung open on the truck in front of her. A portly man with a bush of a gray beard got out, lumbered over. Squinted at her. “You okay?” he bellowed as he tugged a T-shirt sporting a Confederate flag over his girth. “This guy messin’ with you?”

Yeah, he was messing with her all right. Air. She needed air. She locked eyes with Nick. His were blue and crystalline, as placid as they’d been stormy. He reached around his neck to finger a shiny stone the green of spring grass, nestled under his collar on what appeared to be a thin leather strap.

It glowed with ember-like intensity. She watched, fascinated.

I-279 South, idling engines, the car radio somewhere behind her booming its bass—all of it receded like floodwater after a storm.

Libby stood on the porch of the cabin she and her father rented for a week every summer. He came around the corner, fairly glowing. Pink with health. Dad. He slung a fishing rod over his shoulder and winked. “Let’s go catch us a mess of crappies.” The creek, ten feet away, rushed over rocks and fallen trees, its path clear, sure. The sun warmed her face and the air soothed her. She breathed in the scent of earth, burgeoning with spring.

She blinked. Snippets of music and phone conversations littered the highway around her. Libby gaped, unable to speak, like she’d shot down a hill on a roller coaster and banked the curve of the next.

Nick said nothing, his eyes still locked on hers.

Ford Truck shot him a dirty look, then clambered over to her side of the car. “Lady, I said, you okay?” he yelled.

Shaking, she lowered her window, not sparing him a glance. “Yeah, yeah, I’m okay.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah.”

Muttering something about the country going to hell in a handbasket, Ford Truck stomped back to his pickup and climbed inside.

Still staring at Nick, she clung fast to her resolve before it escaped her. Reaching across the seat, she yanked on the handle, and pushed open the passenger door.

“Get in.”

Author Q&A

It is my pleasure to welcome Rebecca E. Neely, author of The Keeper, to Room With Books!

Please tell us about yourself.

I wear many hats – my favorites are probably Mom and storyteller. I’ve lived in Western Pennsylvania all my life, and had the amazing opportunity to grow up in my family’s restaurant business. From an early age, I was treated as one of the ‘grown ups’, working at all the jobs in the restaurant – waitress, cook, dishwasher. Food has always been family, love and community, and the characters that filled my life, employees and customers, fueled my imagination then and now.

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I think I always wanted to be a writer, but the path I took to get there wasn’t direct. First I became an accountant, which, believe it or not, helps me with plotting and details.

How long have you been writing and what was your inspiration to write?

I’ve been writing forever. When I was younger, I wrote stories in composition books, and I entered a writing contest in Seventeen magazine. I also liked to tell stories to my stuffed animals, and make up love stories amongst my Barbies. My father was an English teacher, and he always shared his love of literature and the language with me. When I was ten, eleven, twelve years old, I remember having really deep conversations at the dinner table about Jack London and Sherlock Holmes and Shakespeare and why it was fun to use the dictionary. I still think it is!

Do you have a job in addition to writing? Please tell us about.

Yes. After I’d done my 10-year stint as an accountant, I had my daughter, started freelancing and went back to work part time as an administrative assistant. I love the people I work with. I’ve known them for a long time.

How would you summarize this book in less than 20 words?

The Keeper – A tortured clan leader and an anxious accountant fighting to save humans from destruction must choose between their hearts and duty.

Now, let’s talk about writing and how you came to be a published author.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

About fifteen years ago, I wrote an article about a family owned market in my home town for a publication called Small Town Life, and I’ve been freelancing on and off ever since. It was a real kick to see my very own by line! What a thrill! And I didn’t get paid a dime for it. The very first time I got paid for an article was another high. Wow! It was deeply satisfying on so many levels. Someone was paying me to do what I loved.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I wrote two books that have never seen the light of day. And shouldn’t 😉 But I finished them, and that in itself was a goal for me that tested my discipline and perseverance and passion. The third book I wrote, A Mighty Good Man, was published in 2014. I cherish the journey that led to that.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to “The End”?

I don’t think I’m the fastest writer, even though I wish I could be. I’d say about nine months to a year.

What can we expect from you in the future? More of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I’ve got all kinds of ideas knocking around in my head. Many of them have a paranormal flair. I’d also like to write another story that takes place in Fiddler’s Elbow, PA, which is the setting from A Mighty Good Man. I’ll probably die before I get to write all the stories I’ve got in me!

Who is your favorite character from your books and why are they your favorite?

I love Libby Klink from The Keeper, and the journey she’s on. She’s a bit odd, and she’s imperfect in many ways. She’s got self-confidence issues, and I enjoyed seeing her develop, and giving her hardships to overcome.

What is your routine for writing?

Morning is the best time of day for me to write. There’s something magical about getting up before anyone else is up, padding downstairs in my bathrobe and having a hot cup of coffee, standing over the register vent and getting down whatever thoughts have bubbled to the surface overnight. That’s a good day. Other times, I’ll write in my car, while I wait for my daughter at her activities. Or on my lunch break. I’ve taken to dictating with Dragon, too, on my phone, while I’m on the go.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

It’s happened both ways for me. Sometimes phrases or words here and there speak to me, and a title is born. Other times, like with the Crossing Realms series, I knew I wanted to title each book after one of the beings.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books?

I think there are hidden messages and morals in most books. That’s what makes them great, in my opinion. Just like fairy tales. I have a tendency to gravitate toward themes of family and second chances. I think we all deserve both and I enjoy creating journeys for my characters to find both.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

Love my Kindle ap on my phone. I probably read more on that than anything these days, while I’m waiting for my daughter at her activities, or at the doctor’s office, etc. Love hardbacks from the library, and paperbacks from my own collection. Curling up with a good book and a hot cup of coffee – it doesn’t get much better than that.

What is your favorite book and why is it your favorite? How many times would you estimate you’ve read it?

Wow, that’s tough. So many to choose from! I’d have to say that’s a toss up between The Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz and Sea Swept, Book 1 in the Chesapeake Bay Saga by Nora Roberts.

I first read The Eyes of Darkness when Dean Koontz published as Leigh Nichols. It has to be at least twenty years since I first read it, and I reread it at least once every year. I love Danny, the action and the relationship between Tina and Elliott. In Sea Swept, it’s hard to beat Cameron Quinn, the brooding alpha male who’s got a soft spot for a boy who’s looking for a home. The chemistry between Cam and Anna never gets old.

Do you read all the reviews of your books?

Absolutely. It means so much to me that a reader has been affected strongly enough to say what he or she feels, whether or not they enjoyed the book.

That’s enough of the serious business. How about a handful of fun questions!

What is your favorite food? Without a doubt, cheese. I love cheddar, and I always keep some on hand. There’s this awesome store near where I live, and they must sell a hundred kinds of cheese, along with smoked meats, jams, pickles, crackers, homemade biscotti, you name it. We’ll go and spend a few hours there every couple of months. We tear into the bags on the way home!

Who is your favorite singer or group? Can’t narrow it down to just one. But I would include Norah Jones, Led Zeppelin and Ray Charles. They all speak to my different moods. I grew up on Hank Williams, Sr. and Jr. I watched Norah Jones on Palladia’s Storyteller’s series awhile back. She was talking about how Hank Williams Sr. was such a genius, and how he had this amazing ability to write songs, which to me, are little stories. She wished she could write like him, but she said, (don’t quote me here but something to the effect) “You can’t. You just can’t.” Sigh. I agree with you, Norah. He was amazing! Can’t say enough about Robert Plant or Ray Charles either. They are the men!

What is your favorite color? In clothing, I gravitate toward black a lot, which bugs my mother to no end. LOL In my house, I tend to gravitate toward reds.

What is your ideal getaway dream vacation? Camping, in a cabin or a tent, being outside, sitting around the fire with friends. Something magical happens there, and I can’t get enough of it.

What final words would you offer to our readers? It’s been a pleasure to be here today. I really appreciate the opportunity to meet new people and to hear from readers. I also invite you to visit me at my blog Mystical Musings, where I post about unusual and/or paranormal topics that strike my fancy.

Thank you for spending time at Room With Books. I appreciate your time and wish you the best with your book. I hope you will come back again!

Excerpt

“Back up for a moment,” Blake said, and all heads turned to him. “Getting the lotus seeds and the milk from Helios’s cattle sounds crazy, but feasible. But the blood of a slain hydra? I know we’ve been practicing with our powers and weapons for a month—and we’ve gotten pretty good at it, too—but the hydra is one of the most dangerous creatures out there. Slaying it was one of Hercules’s twelve labors. What if one of us gets hurt? Or worse?”

I didn’t know if I was imagining it or not, but I could have sworn that his gaze drifted to mine when he’d said that last part. It was like he was saying that he didn’t want me getting hurt. My cheeks heated at the thought, and I focused on my hands, unable to look at Blake without my feelings for him showing on my face for everyone else to see.

“Hercules was one person,” Chris pointed out. “We’re five.”

“Actually, Hercules didn’t slay the hydra on his own,” Kate said. “He needed help from his nephew.”

“But neither of them had powers like ours.” Chris rubbed his hands together, his confidence not wavering. “We’ve got this.”

“Oh, I know we can slay the hydra.” Blake crossed his arms, as if offended that anyone had thought he’d doubted our abilities. “We just need to make sure that we all get back here alive.”
