book blurb

A fresh contemporary romance about a lonely girl looking for love, family and the perfect dress.

Managing a flailing second-hand clothes shop in an English village is not part of Cally Kirkwood’s life plan. But she’s travelled across the world to meet her birth father and she won’t leave until he acknowledges her.

But life happens when you’re busy making plans, and Cally soon finds herself completely invested in converting the grungy shop into a beautiful vintage clothing store, despite the opposition of her new employer’s son, Sam Hunter.

Sam is instantly attracted to Cally but can’t figure her out. There’s something she isn’t telling him and he doesn’t know whether to trust her—yet he can’t stay away.

An unexpected discovery means Cally must decide whether her true loyalty lies with her father or Sam. She thought she’d do anything to find love; but choosing between her past and her future may leave her with no love at all.

excerpt

Sam dropped the rake, grabbed the handles of the wheelbarrow and wheeled Cally at top speed towards the pile of leaves.

‘Wha—?’ Cally’s squeal was cut short as she was tumbled into the leaves. Sam picked up a handful of colourful foliage and dumped it on her, laughing at her look of mock outrage, before diving into the pile to join her. ‘I haven’t done this for years. My sisters and I loved playing in the leaves when we were kids. Dad would rake the biggest pile and we’d bomb it. He’d pretend it drove him nuts, but he loved it too.’

Through the leaves, Cally felt Sam’s hands grab her and he hoisted her up, rolling her until she was lying, stretched out along the full length of his muscular body. His hands stroked down her back, falling to rest on her buttocks. He squeezed lightly, his hands wedging her closer until she could feel his hardness, and a blazing need for him clutched deep in her belly.

She buried her face into his neck, breathing in the tantalisingly earthy mix of garden and leather, licking the salt from beneath his ear. His hands slipped underneath the huge coat, searching for skin, but finding only the frustration of a dress not designed to aid exploring fingers. She laughed, wriggling suggestively, as she kissed him, her tongue wrangling with his, teasing, probing. She knew he was trying to distract her from asking personal questions, which heightened her curiosity nearly as much as it heightened her desire. She wanted to know so much more about him.

Pulling away, she looked into eyes that were strong and sensual. It was too much to hope a man this beautiful could ever really be hers. Even dressed in old clothes, lying in a pile of leaves, he emanated so much irresistible desire.

But she had to fight the attraction, not succumb to it. There were too many complications to their relationship … She struggled out of his grasp, sat up and brushed the leaves out of her hair. They had no future once he discovered who she was.

Whatever personal information he avoided sharing with her, it had nothing on the secret she hid from him.

book blurb

A kiss. A promise. A mistake.

Hollywood stuntman Ace had life changing decisions to make and time was running out. Bleakly, he saw a future of always being different, that was, until he met British beauty Nina Mae. Her enthusiasm for life was addictive.

Rich, party girl, Nina Mae was in love. But a demand to come home early and a simple mistake, changed the course of both their lives.

Would she ever get back to America? Or were they destined to be two people who met and enjoyed one unbelievable weekend, tied by the repercussions of those hours. Or was she simply his distraction?

excerpt

“Tell me about your life Nina Mae.” Ace invited.

“I’m a golden child. Very much a daddy’s girl and a mummy’s darling.” She began conversationally, not the least bit embarrassed by her admission. “Spoilt. An only child of only children. There’s just my mum and my dad and little ole me, but I’m not a brat.” She told him. “I’m an Essex girl. Do you know what that is?”

“No,”

She smiled at him. “You’ll have to visit me in England to find out.” She went on. “Are you going to dance with me?”

He scowled. “No.”

“Why not?” She pressed.

He crossed his arms over his chest and frowned at her again, Nina realised it was his way of telling her to shut the hell up.

“Let’s play a game,” she said instead, determined to get her own way. “If I win we dance and if you win you get to ask whatever you want.”

Ace pulled in a deep breath and let it out in a noisy whoosh. Why was he still here, he thought, but already knowing the answer. She wanted him, had made it damn obvious with all the nervous chatter and hair flicking. She was desperate enough to keep him guessing and he was curious enough, egotistical enough, to want to know how this would play out. “What’s the game?”

“Things that go together,” she explained. “But as pairs.”

“Pairs?”

“Yeah. For example I have to say something that is always referred to in a pair, like Kings and Queens and bricks and mortar, things like that.”

Ace shook his head, he’d never come across anyone so complex and playful in his life. But he was game. The pub was emptying and if he lost, it would be no hardship to wheel around by the table pretending to dance. Jesus Christ, this is what his life had become, playing fucking party games to get his ego stroked.

“You start,” he ordered. “Wait,” he held up his hand. “How many pairs to win?”

“How about until one of us stops?”

“Cool.”

“Left and right. Your turn.

This was going to be so easy he thought. “Brush and comb.”

They played for almost fifteen minutes, Ace was really getting into it, but knew he was going to lose. She was just too good and too fast. He eventually faltered and she clapped her hands, declaring herself the winner, of course. His lips twitched into a smile.

“Come on.” She stood quickly, eagerly heading over to the dance floor, but turned back when she saw that he hadn’t moved.

“Not out there,” he said. “Here.”

“Okay.” Nina agreed.

book blurb

A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Maddie Jane debuts her romantic comedy novel about a woman who knows how to fix things and the man who wants to convince her that DIY is more fun with two…

Toppling from her very high heels into Luke Colton’s arms is not the impression Harper Cassidy likes to make. She is strong, independent, and on a personal mission to teach DIY skills to women, and he is all wrong – determined to get involved, determined to help her, and determined to mess with her self-control and self-imposed single lifestyle.

Harper has been more than clear that her plans don’t include him, but there’s something about a woman that knows her way around a power tool that has Luke too enthralled to walk away. Taking his mother along to Harper’s DIY for women classes is the perfect excuse to watch her in action, and maybe convince her that doing it for yourself doesn’t always mean having to go it alone.

excerpt

Luke had considered not going back to the classroom to talk to Harper, but he’d never been one to shy away from a fight.

And she still had the sexy tool belt on. Which helped. A lot.

‘I didn’t think you’d be back,’ she said, not meeting his gaze.

‘It seemed a waste of a good ‘I’ll be back’ not to.’ He looked at her, wondering if she got the Arnie reference. She stared blankly, jiggling a hammer for a second before shoving it into a loop on her belt. ‘And I thought we had a few things we should slug out in private,’ he said. ‘As in, not in front of an entire class of your students. Or even worse, my mother,’ he added as an afterthought.

‘What sort of things?’ Harper’s hand was back on the hammer, which made Luke extremely nervous. If forced to describe her right now, this very second, the words ‘armed and dangerous’ would be perfect.

‘I thought we probably needed to discuss this thing we’ve got between us, for starters.’

‘What thing?’ Her hand held the head of the hammer, lifting it and then letting it slide back through its loop. Lift, slide. Lift, slide.

‘You can pretend all you want, Harper, but there is a thing and it’s the reason we got naked together.’

For a second the hammer was still. Then lift, slide. Lift, slide.

‘People get naked for a whole lot of reasons. It doesn’t have to be a big deal.’

‘True. Only I get the feeling it is a big deal for you, which is why you turfed me out on my arse the way you did.’

Harper’s hand formed a fist around the hammer, her white knuckles the only indication she acknowledged his words. At least the lift–slide had stopped before it completely threw him off course.

‘Okay, so now we’ve talked about that. What else did you want to talk about?’ said Harper.

Chloe Ryder had it all. Until she didn’t…

While the rest of her friends, otherwise known as the Fab Five, were away starting college, Chloe was left alone to endure a hellacious senior year of high school. Surrounded daily by a sea of familiar faces, she shared no bonds or friendships with her classmates. Everyone else had a place in the high school social scene. Everyone but Chloe. Bad enough was her label as the class outcast. But her dysfunctional home life made matters worse. An already fragile relationship between she and her mother began to unravel, turning Chloe’s once perfect existence into a nightmare. Worst part, though? The one person she’d counted on to help her through it – Flynn Caulder, her best friend’s brother and the secret object of her affection – was nowhere to be found. It was obvious he still resented Chloe for the decision she made years ago. Above the catty remarks and whispered gossip of others, Flynn’s actions were the ones that hurt the most. Flynn simply treated her as if she didn’t exist.

Right up until the one night he didn’t…

Handsome, popular, athletic and smart, Flynn Caulder made life look easy. Whatever he wanted, he got. Except the one person he couldn’t have. At some point, Chloe Ryder became more than his sister’s best friend. Brave enough to finally tell her so, she waffled with uncertainty, which he took as rejection. It was then he vowed to shut Chloe completely out of his life, determined to forget her. Though, he never could. With his sister, Suzanna, no longer around, Flynn’s resolve to keep Chloe at a distance is tested and eventually breaks. He takes off his mask of indifference, showing his true feelings for Chloe haven’t changed, but instead grown stronger. It leads to one magical night together neither of them will ever forget. But for entirely different reasons.

Now, three years later, Chloe and Flynn find themselves pulled together again by the magnetic connection that just won’t go away. Though they try to fight it, it becomes apparent time apart has done nothing but strengthen their feelings for one another. Can they make it last this time? Or will the pursuit of dreams once again take precedence over their relationship? They only have a summer to figure it out. And the clock is quickly ticking…

excerpt

I cry for the young high school aged girl who felt so lonely, the highlight of each day was crossing off another square on the calendar. Just one X closer to leaving her small hometown in search of something bigger and better. I cry for the younger sister who no matter how many accomplishments she racked up during her years in the high school drama club, no matter what lead roles she won, no matter how many people sang her praises for numerous flawless performances, she never received the acknowledgement she craved from her mother. She finally realized that in her mother’s eyes, she’d never measure up to the bar that her sister set and surpassed in everything she ever did. I cry for the girl with stars in her eyes, who dared to dream the impossible. The girl who was on top of the moon when she opened the acceptance letter and full scholarship from one of the most prestigious drama schools in the country. The girl who fought tooth and nail in convincing her parents to let her travel thousands of miles away to study her chosen field in the pursuit of her dreams. My body jerks uncontrollably, my sobs intensifying as my heart bleeds for the girl who eventually had to decline her scholarship, accepting the unjust punishment handed down by Mommy Dearest. Even though that scholarship was earned with hours of practice and late night rehearsals, the bad daughter didn’t deserve to reap the rewards of all her hard work and effort. Finally, I cry for the naïve girl, who desperately yearned to become a woman. The girl who after exhausting all the other ways to garner a man’s affection, resorted to the one act she knew would be the quickest way to winning his heart. Only after giving everything she had to give of herself on that one night, she quickly learned the awful feeling of rejection. The final flow of tears I cry is for the multiple losses this young girl had to experience. The loss of her dream, the loss of her first love, the lost respect of her mother. But most of all, the one, singular, most important loss she’ll never get over, the loss that leaves her hollow to this day.

Only when the well of tears has finally dried up, do I relinquish my firm grip around Brian’s body. He looks down into my red, swollen, watery eyes. Wiping the last of the wetness from my face, Brian places a soft kiss on my forehead. “Feel better now?”

“Maybe just a little, yeah.”

“Think you’re ready to talk about it?” Brian asks with trepidation. I’m sure he’s scared any second now I’ll start another round of boo‐hoos.

“I don’t know, Brian. It’s some pretty heavy shit.” Heavy is an understatement. In the past three years, I’ve been living like I’m carrying the weight of a two-ton elephant on my back. There’s one piggy‐back ride you don’t want to find yourself on the bottom of.

“Hey, I’ve got an idea. Hold on,” Brian says as he jumps off the bed. He immediately goes to his constant travel companion, his mini-camcorder and tripod. He begins setting up his equipment at the end of the bed, the lens pointing toward me. As he tests for the appropriate camera angles and adjusts the tripod height, he starts to explain. “Okay, pretend you’re auditioning for the character in my series. And since it’s an impromptu audition with no lines to memorize or scripts to read from, I’m gonna need you to improvise. You have all the creative freedom to do or say whatever you want_”

“Good, because I’m about to get real creative when I call you every name in the book!” I retort. Seriously, has Brian lost his freaking mind?

“Just do it, Chloe. You’re vulnerable and raw right now. Use those emotions to give me your story. You don’t have to use real names. Heck, I’ll even make up the names as you go. You’ve already peeled away layers of hurt and angst. Now, you just need to let the words flow like the flow of your earlier tears. I promise you’ll feel better at the end. Plus, I’ll have some excellent footage to show casting, guaranteeing you an audition for my drama series. Ready?” Brian goes back to fiddling with the camera all set to hit the record button. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the idea of sharing something so secret with someone outside of my immediate group of friends. But to be honest, Brian is the perfect confidant to spill my secrets. Having no relationship other than causal friendship with the rest of the Fab Five, only having met them this weekend, I know Brian’s loyalty is reserved just for me. Plus, I think he can be impartial once he knows all the players and details of my story. I can’t say Suz, Landon, James, or Patrick could remain unbiased.

“Seriously, Brian? You really want me to reveal my deep, dark secrets in front of your camera? Seems kinda silly if you ask me.” Actually, I’m closer to agreeing than I’d like to admit. I’m always best in front of a camera. I can go into character mode, removing myself from the story, pretending to be someone else. But with something that really happened, something that left me permanently scarred, could I really separate myself?

“Would you just do it already? Confession is good for the soul, you know. Plus, I’ll soon be moving across the country and you refuse to go with me. Least you can do is give me this recording of your exquisite beauty and abundant talent. Footage I’ll need to ease the ache of missing you so much,” Brian says through a smile. Boy, he is laying it on thick.

“Alright, enough of that. Gee, you’ve resorted to stroking my ego just to get me on film. You’re ruthless! Now I know you’re going to be just fine out there in Hollywood…the land of cut throat/back stabbing deals. Okay, I’ll tell you my story. But I better not see any of what I say written into your drama script,” I warn. Although the things I’ve lived I’d never wish on anyone else, they could be the makings for some fantastic storylines.

“Oh, it’s that good, huh?” Brian teases, trying to lighten the mood and get this pseudo- audition started.

“Good, no. Bad, sad, heartbreaking, depressing, hopeless…well, you get the picture.” Taking a deep breath to steady my nerves I exhale slowly. “Okay, here it goes…” So begins the story of how I came to love and hate Flynn Caulder. And why I’ll never be able to completely wipe him from my memory or my heart.

She’s a widow. He’s a reformed player. One passionate night changes them both forever.

Toni Harrison isn’t buying anything Ahmad Espen is selling. Everyone considers him the savior of the African American community but she knows him as a heartless player and plans to steer clear of him. The only problem is her sister and Ahmad’s brother are smitten with each other and despite Toni’s attempts otherwise, she constantly finds herself in Ahmad’s presence.

Ahmad understands why Toni is wary of him, but he’s a totally different man from the boy she knew in college. Now he’s determined to push past all her defenses to gain her trust. When he finally does, one passionate night with her confirms she’s the perfect woman for him.

Yet it seems there’s no fairy-tale ending for them, as Ahmad and Toni find out the hard way. Someone is out to destroy their relationship, along with Ahmad’s good name and Toni’s privacy. Once more Toni has good reason to distance herself from Ahmad, since he blames her for the whole mess. Heartbroken again, she walks away, and by the time he comes to his senses, he realizes it may well be too late to rewrite their love story to give it a happy ending.

excerpt

Toni flicked her gaze from her phone to the man standing above her with every intention of telling him the same thing she’d told the others. As soon as she looked up, her heart seized on a beat and her breath formed a lump in her throat. Toni not only stared at who was possibly the finest man she’d ever seen in her life, but also one she hadn’t seen in eleven years.

Ahmad Espen.

A vision of the last time he’d talked to her flashed across her mind and was just what she needed to close her gaping mouth and firm her back. She stared back at him, waiting for…for what exactly? For him to mention what had happened between them? For him to apologize?

He smiled down at her, flashing bright white teeth. “I’m sorry to disturb you, miss. But I saw you sitting all alone back here and thought you could use some company.”

Miss? Company?

She didn’t know if she should be mad or glad. He didn’t seem to recognize her. On one hand, she didn’t have to relive the embarrassment but on the other, he’d dismissed their last encounter, while she’d held onto it for all these years.

“I-I’m…um. I don’t need company.” Did she just stutter? She wanted to slap a hand across her forehead. She gripped her cell phone tightly to stop herself from doing just that and making a bigger fool of herself.

When she’d been a freshman in college and he’d been the sexy and worldly junior, she’d had the same reaction—stumbling, bumbling idiot. Get it together, Toni. She wasn’t a green little girl anymore.

“Well, if you don’t want me to sit with you, can I have this dance?”

If she were any other woman at the party, she would’ve gladly jumped up and taken him up on his offer. But while everyone knew Ahmad as an African-American motivational speaker who’d sprung onto the scene five years before, attracting more followers to his ‘black community self-help’ doctrine, Toni knew him as a promiscuous, rowdy fraternity boy. While Toni admired his topic, the man behind the words often left a bad taste in her mouth. Every time she saw him on television talking about his main agenda, the state of the African American community and the need to revitalize and energize the younger generation, she couldn’t help but remember how he’d treated her. “Why?”

He took a quick glance around. “You’re the only person not on the dance floor or mingling.”

She smiled up at him like she’d done to the other men. Everyone else in the room could worship at his feet. They thought he was so great, so perfect. “No, thank you. I’m watching the drinks and purses,” she said, but what she really wanted to tell him was to go to hell.

The emotion on his face quickly went from enamored to confused. “All I’m asking for is one dance.”

She’d once given him a dance and she’d let that go to her head and let him sweet talk her into his twin-sized bed. Well, there hadn’t really been that much sweet talking involved, it hadn’t been needed. She would’ve gone with him even if he’d recited the alphabet. “I’m not much of a dancer.” The lie quickly fell from her mouth.

“Sooo.” He motioned his hand through the air. “You’re at a singles mingle—dance party, I might add—and you can’t dance?”

As she shook her head, her hair bounced around her face. “No, I can’t. Not a lick.”

“So, that’s your excuse for turning down everyone who asked you to dance?”

She peered straight into his eyes. “Yes.” It was a good thing that she’d long gotten over wanting to poke his eyes out with a rusty fork because he was in arm’s reach and there was a fork, albeit not rusty, on her table.

book blurb

Anna just wants to earn enough money on the side to buy into the bakery, Callie’s Cakes, where she works together with her best nerd pal Callie. The last thing she expects to see when she walks into Arthur’s apartment to do some moonlighting is a blood bath. Callie’s ready to jump into the investigation into Arthur’s murder, and she’s bringing another bakery worker, Kristie, into their hijinks whether Kristie wants to or not. But things aren’t as they seem. There are gang affiliations, illegal gambling dens, and ladies of the night to wade through. Will Anna and Callie discover who murdered Arthur or will Callie’s detective boyfriend and Anna’s self-appointed protector put a stop to such aspirations?

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu, but make sure to bring your own baker, because Anna’s a bit preoccupied at the moment.

Warning: This is NOT your mom’s cozy mystery. Bring Your Own Baker may be a ‘clean’ read, but if gangs, illegal gambling, and pimps make you turn your nose up at your e-reader, you might want to skip this one. Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

excerpt

I grasp the weapon in my hand and throw it with all my might at him. The weapon makes a ‘tee-hee’ sound as it hits his stomach.

“Did you just throw a Pillsbury dough boy at me?” His voice carries a hint of humor. The Pillsbury dough boy was probably not the best item to grab from the kitchen to use as a weapon. Obviously, I’m totally losing it.

I inch backward into the kitchen searching for a more appropriate weapon. Dag nab it! The knives are way over on the other side. I have no choice. Without taking my eyes of the man, I grab a perfectly formed and probably fricking delicious muffin from the tin and throw it at the intruder. It seems my fastball needs some work as he just catches the muffin as if I merely lobbed it in his direction. He smiles and, not bothering with the paper liner, takes a huge bite.

“Mmmm…,” he groans around a mouthful. “This is really good.”

“Seriously?” I throw my arms in the air before planting my hands on my hips. “If you want my muffins, just come to the bakery. You don’t have to break in.” Uh oh, I nearly forgot that he broke in. I start backing up again, getting ever closer to those knives.

The man’s eyes narrow as he notices me shuffling my way towards the potential weapons. He stalks me and, when he’s only an arm’s length away, reaches around me and grabs the knife block. He keeps his eyes steady on me as he places the block on top of the refrigerator. Somewhere I can only reach if I get out my step ladder.

“Who are you? And what are you doing here?” I may be terrified and my voice may stutter a bit, but I’m not backing down. Not. One. Bit.

“You’re a feisty little thing, aren’t you?”

“Who you calling little?” Apparently, I have no regard for my safety at all as I’m now goading an intruder.

The man chuckles. His smile shows a perfect set of teeth. Huh, not exactly what I expected from Mr. Piercings and Tattoos. “For a pink-haired pixie, you sure aren’t afraid, are you?”

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-seaso n and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

book blurb

Immortal and a member of the Sinistra Dei, a secret order designed to eliminate threats to the Vatican, Giovanna was created to do the dirty work of the Church. This requires creative thinking and the ability to tap dance on the line between right and wrong.

As the commander she loves slowly sinks into insanity, she learns that dark immortals—the Execrati dedicated to destroying her kind— have snuck into New Orlean’s legendary French Quarter to hunt her friends. With the further discovery that one of Rome’s own has faked his death, and the unexpected evolution of her supernatural powers, Gia is no longer able to play by the rules.

How can she defy the man she loves, break the trust of a close friend, and explain the new set of wings on her back?

The answer is simple… she can’t.

excerpt

Giovanna stalked her prey through the narrow alley of the French Quarter.

Nightfall brought music and drunken laughter. She followed the man, waiting for the opportunity to judge and, perhaps, to kill. Above her Torben crouched on the rooftop waiting.

“Where are you?” she whispered.

“I’m right here.” A man stepped into the dim light. Shadows deepened his gaunt features, accentuating the hollows of his cheeks.

“You selling?” She feigned a nervous catch in her voice.

“Naw, but I’m buying.”

Gia caught the gleam of metal in his hand. Even from six feet away she detected the sour scent of chemicals mingled with sweat, liquor, and stale cigarettes. The man before her was dangerous by human standards.

Gia took a step in the addict’s direction, and he lunged for her. She sidestepped his advance and shoved him against the wall. The scent of human blood assaulted her senses, made her stomach turn.

Torben leapt from the roof, landing a foot to her right. He looked every bit the part of a tenth century Norseman—dark blond hair, blue eyes, well-muscled, and a scruffy pointed beard. He could have stepped off the cover of some cheesy Viking romance novel. Even his name was a cliché’. Torben, “the Bear of Thor”.

He hoisted the man up and held him at arm’s length while the little bastard flailed in mid-air. The man struggled, kicking and stabbing to no avail. Torben’s height gave him the advantage.

“Drop it.” Gia laced her words with compulsion.

The knife clattered to the ground.

The addict renewed his effort to break free. Torben wrapped an arm around the man’s midsection. “Be still.”

He stopped moving. “I got money. You want money? Take it. Got drugs too.”

Gia frowned. “I miss the old days when we had wars to fight. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind an assassination order. At least I could have some fun, get creative, you know?”

“Peace never lasts.” Torben adjusted his grip on the human.

She rolled her eyes. “Ever the optimist.”

“Do you want to read him or shall I?”

“I will.” Gia stepped in front of her would-be assailant. She pressed her fingertips on the exposed flesh of his wrist and closed her eyes.

Her mind exploded with images of the human’s life, memories, emotions, regrets, evidence of past sins laid out for her judgment. He preferred the intimacy of killing with knives and took trophies from the bodies—a finger from one, a pretty blue eye from another. She counted four women in total.

She detected no remorse. If he regretted his sins she could choose to release him unharmed, or perhaps release him with the knowledge of the pain he had brought to others in hopes that he would choose a different path for the future. The monster in Torben’s arms laughed as he relived the worst of his sins. There would be no mercy.

“Verdict?”

“Death. He had only pride in his skill. He was … nostalgic for his kills.”

Torben nodded and pressed his hand to the junkie’s face. “I’m not surprised.”

Without a word Gia rose to her tiptoes and wrapped her hand around the man’s neck. She opened a link between herself and the human, feeding from his energy, his prana. As she fed, her pale skin illuminated and she dipped her chin to allow her dark hair to hide the light.

“I love it when you glow.” Torben chuckled and began to feed.

“It’s fun in private but it draws too much attention on the streets.”

“I remember how fun it was in private.”

Gia narrowed her eyes. “What has gotten into you? Are you flirting with me? Again?”

“What if I am?”

“It’s been a couple of centuries since you have.”

“Have I told you lately how beautiful your eyes are? Like icy-blue jewels.” He grinned.

“Have I told you lately that you are a class-A pain in the ass?” She cut off the energy flow from the human but maintained the mental connection.

“What are you doing?”

“I want to read his thoughts as he dies.”

Torben’s eyes widened. “That’s rather morbid.”

“It’s fascinating. Sometimes I can see a light. It reminds me there’s more to this world than we can see.”

“You need to read a human to believe there’s more than the physical world?”

Gia shrugged. The connection between herself and the dying man flared to life. She shared his terror as ghosts of the women he murdered crowded the alley. Some cried for justice while others laughed. Even his mother came—not to comfort, but to condemn. They crowded around and pulled at him with cold dead hands. He struggled to escape, but his heart convulsed, and he clutched his chest. He died in the alley while his victims called for his soul.

Gia broke the link, dazed. No longer in his head she couldn’t see the spirits. “I wonder if the ghosts are still here.”

“They are manifestations of his mind. There are no such things as ghosts.” Torben eased the body to the ground.

“How can you be certain?”

“I can’t, I guess.” Torben slid his arm around her shoulders and led her out of the alley. His shoulders tensed and his expression grew more serious.

“What’s wrong?”

“We need to talk.”

She stepped out from under his arm. “I’ve noticed you seem more … attentive toward me. But, Torben, we can’t cross that line.”

“This is far more serious than our relationship, or lack thereof.”

“That sounds ominous.”

Torben stopped walking and turned to her. “It’s Lochlain. He’s—”

“He’s worried about Marin. It’s been a long time since he imbued a human. He’s fine.”

“He’s not fine. The day is coming when I’ll be forced to take control of the clutch.”

Gia refused to let his words sink in. “You’re wrong, and committing treason. Lochlain won’t let you take the clutch.”

“He may have no choice.” Torben met her gaze. “I’m worried about your safety, Giovanna. Lochlain isn’t in his right mind. He is losing himself to the darkness. You of all people have to know this.”

She pulled away. “I need to get back to work.”

“I’ll walk with you.”

Torben fell in beside her as they walked back to the bar on Bourbon Street. Gia lost herself in her thoughts. What would become of the clutch if Torben forced Lochlain to step down? Could they survive it?

Gia turned to him. “Torben, you’ve been by Lochlain’s side since you joined the Order of the Sinistra Dei. What? A thousand years ago?”

“Something like that.”

“If what you say is true you need to help Lochlain. You two are like yin and yang. The clutch will fall apart without that balance.”

“I know you love him, Giovanna, but it may be too late.”

She ran her hands up his chest, using his desire for her to her advantage. “Lochlain has a quick temper and loves the sound of his own voice, but that doesn’t mean he’s evil.”

“There’s more to it than that.” Torben put his hands over hers and removed them from his chest, though he didn’t release them.

“Torben, you’re scaring me. Not many of us remain in the world. Letting even one slip into darkness, or be put to death by the Church—”

“I’ll do what I can for Lochlain.” Torben conceded.

“Thank you.”
