Jason was sure that he’d bleed out before they could take him back and stitch up his head. A nurse had given him a gauze pad to replace the tissue that had dried to his skin.
Chloe sat next to him frantically filling out his medical record in her beautiful penmanship.
“Address?”
He gave it to her and watched as she made perfect fours.
“Phone number?”
She wrote it down.
“I’m a Pisces. My favorite color is red. I like my pizza with just sausage, and I’m sensitive to gluten, but I can’t keep away from it.”
She stopped writing and looked up at him. “I don’t think I need all that. But thanks,” she snapped, but it only made it funnier to him.
“I just thought it was a good time to get to know each other. My turn, why don’t you answer those questions for me?” He tried to smile, but each time he did it hurt his head.
“Everything you need to know about me is in my employee file. You can ask H.R. if you need to see it since you’re my boss.”
She directed her attention right back to the form, but he got the message loud and clear. She wasn’t happy about his new position.

Bernadette Marie has been an avid writer since the early age of 13, when she’d fill notebook after notebook with stories that she’d share with her friends. Her journey into novel writing started the summer before eighth grade when her father gave her an old typewriter. At all times of the day and night you would find her on the back porch penning her first work, which she would continue to write for the next 22 years.

In 2007 – after marriage, filling her chronic entrepreneurial needs, and having five children – Bernadette began to write seriously with the goal of being published. That year she wrote 12 books. In 2009 she was contracted for her first trilogy and the published author was born. In 2011 she (being the entrepreneur that she is) opened her own publishing house, 5 Prince Publishing, and has released contemporary titles and has begun the process of taking on other authors in other genres.

Bernadette spends most of her free time driving her kids to their many events. She is also an accomplished martial artist, working her way to her second degree black belt in Tang Soo Do. An avid reader she loves to meet readers who enjoy reading contemporary romances and she always promises Happily Ever After.

Gia Gallow has traveled the world. Her wanderlust landed her in Georgia where she has created a life for herself away from the petty differences of relatives and domineering ex-lovers. Having settled in America, she has a successful business and dear friends—and the attention of both Dane and Russell Walker. Due to her own family’s dramas over dueling hearts, she might have to forget about her feelings for Dane to keep peace within the Walker family, but sometimes even running thousands of miles away can’t keep a heart from going after what the heart wants. EXCERPT

Dane wasn’t sure why his coffee suddenly tasted so bitter. It might have been the way his brother was looking at Gia when they walked through the door, and she was laughing at what he’d said. Perhaps it was because his attitude had been affected by it and there had been no reason for it. The way Russ had referred to her as a goddess still burned his ears.

Dane’s mother orchestrated everyone through the kitchen, and they all managed to have full plates of food when they were done. She’d managed to set enough chairs and tables, strung together, to house all the guests. He’d seen her do that at Thanksgiving too. He could hardly find enough room on his little table in his apartment to eat his microwave dinner. “Eric and Susan, you sit there,” his mother pointed to chairs. “Russ, you there. Gia you there. Dane you there,” she said pointing to three chairs near the end of the table which flowed into the living room. “Let me take that for you,” Russell smiled at Gia and took her plate. “Oh, thank you. You seem to come to my rescue for everything.” “What can I say? I’m raised right.” Dane let out a grunt, which had both of them turning to look at him. He simply forced a smile and took his seat—after Russ pulled Gia’s seat out for her. At least the food was excellent. Dane t listened to Pearl and Tyson tell stories about their wedding on the beach at sunset and their honeymoon filled with snorkeling and hiking near the waterfalls. It wasn’t that he didn’t like hearing the stories or the awws that came from every female in the room, but watching his brother lean into Gia, and her laughing at everything he said, seemed to be raking on his last nerve. He took his plate into the kitchen for another helping of ham. He was a sucker for ham and tiny bagels. It was something he couldn’t explain. “Does your family do this often?” Gia slid up next to him as he tried to delicately pull two pieces of ham apart. Dane looked at her then at the table of family members who laughed and talked over one another. He shrugged. “Yeah, I guess. Mom’s always putting together a brunch or a dinner.” Gia eased her hip against the counter. “You seem uncomfortable around them all.” “Nah, just all the gushy wedding stuff I guess.” She pursed her lips. “You are not a romantic?” Was that a loaded question? “Sure. I mean I can be romantic. I just…” She laughed and rested her hand on his arm. “I am sure you are the kind of man who could sweep any woman off her feet.” Dane cleared his throat, only because he’d choked on the air he sucked in when she’d said that. “I’m not too sure I’m very smooth with the ladies. My mind has been elsewhere for the past few months.”

She nodded and picked up the serving spoon to ladle more fruit on to her plate. “I understand. I still have some friends back home who will not speak to me because I moved away. I will admit before I left, I might have pushed them away.” “Why?” She shrugged. “So I would not be hurt by leaving.” Maybe she did understand. “I get that. I think…” “Did Susan make those little bacon wraps with dates?” Russ pushed in between them. “I didn’t see them, but dad has one on his plate.” “Steal his then,” Dane said through gritted teeth. “Lighten up.” Russ gave him a jab as he reached in front of Gia and grabbed the bacon on a toothpick. “Looks like I just missed them the first time.” Russ ate the first one and then reached for another. “Did you try these?” he asked Gia, holding it up to her mouth. “Not yet,” she said as he clamped the bacon wrapped date in her teeth and pulled it from the toothpick. Dane was sure he heard both himself and his brother sigh. She gave them a collective wink and carried her plate to the table, now occupying a seat left vacant by Pearl’s father who seemed to have disappeared. “Could you be any more of a pig?” Dane finally took both pieces of ham and dropped them on his plate. “Are you talking to me or the meat?” “You,” he whispered gruffly. “You’re throwing yourself at her. It’s annoying.” “And you’re not, so I don’t see the problem,” Russ argued as he returned to the table. Dane stood there a moment trying to collect his thoughts. How had it happened that he’d moved away, and the world went on without him? He was finding out, very quickly, he didn’t like it.

Author Q&A
What is your favorite part of writing?
Seeing the characters’ reactions to life’s big moments.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
The importance of family and friendship.
Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
It was one of those little cards in the mail for a correspondence writing class for children’s literature. I thought, “I can do that.” Except my characters always morphed into grown-ups and fell in love, so it turned out that romance was my genre.
Give us an insight into how your writing day/time is structured?
I write during my lunch hour at work.
Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
There are as many different ways of dealing with difficult situations as there are people.
What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?
I struggle with getting a good daily word count because my internal editor demands I go over and over what I’ve written before moving on. It definitely makes me a slow writer. To get past that, I try to take the advice of my publisher and give myself permission to spew whatever comes out (and really, that’s where the really good parts come from). Probably the thing that helps most is a deadline—I write much faster under pressure.

 A mother’s secrets threaten a daughter’s future…

Bethany Waterbury left Hollywood and the shadow of her mother’s death to give herself a fresh start. Her main intention—to connect with the family she’d never really had the chance to know.

Author Kent Black is enjoying his chart topping success and living freely wherever his travels take him. But when he meets the illustrious Bethany Waterbury his wanderlust subsides and the thought of a steady future begins to take over.

Kent believes in happily ever after, but the burden of Bethany’s past might be too much for him to embrace —unless true love is more powerful than a Hollywood tragedy.

       Coffee houses once were a source of inspiration. They had a vibe and a feel to them. Now, Kent thought, they were more like bars.
       The same people walked in and out of the door every day. They ordered the same addictive concoction and either carried it out or sat for hours and chatted with others.
       He missed the days where he could pull up to a table and no one bothered him for hours. Since he was traveling it was one of his only options. Sure, he could hold up in his hotel room, but that wasn’t very inspirational either.
       Even though he’d rather be alone, he needed to surround himself with people for inspiration—he just wished they weren’t so noisy.
      The door opened again. It had become habit to look up and study the person. This one had him sitting up, removing his fingers from the keyboard of his laptop, and following her with his eyes.
       Long red curls bounced over her shoulders, which were bare in a sundress with yellow flowers. She was lean and toned and absolutely radiant.
       She walked to the end of the line and Kent turned in his chair to follow her with his gaze.
       Smiling at the boy behind the counter, Kent noted that the young man flushed at her simple gesture. That said something.
       She continued on to pay for her drink. He heard the woman ringing up her order offer a pastry to which the redhead waved off with her hand and a laugh. Obviously she’d avoid that, he knew just by looking at her. Her drink was probably low fat blah too.
      When she turned the beauty of her hit Kent right in the chest. He’d never seen such a beautiful specimen.

Home Run

The Keller Family Series, Book 7

by Bernadette Marie

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Cover_Home Run
In one moment Christian Keller’s life was changed. Now as he picks up the pieces he wonders if he can possibly recoup what he lost.
Victoria Lincoln had a promising future with Christian until an accident took the life of her sister and left her as guardian to her two small children.
Their lives have gone in different directions, but Christian and Victoria’s paths will cross again. It will take a lot of change to pick up where they left off—if either of them can.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Scott reached for her hand and interlaced their fingers. He ran his thumb over hers in the most intimate of gestures and Victoria thought of how sweet they must look—this family dressed in their best, very cozy in Scott’s Lexus.

She let the tension roll out of her shoulders.

Scott gave her a glance and then turned his eyes back to the road. “So how long did you and Christian Keller date?”

The tension was back, but this time it stiffened every muscle in her body. The weight in her stomach was back too and it literally made her sick. She knew she’d tightened the grip she had on Scott’s hand.

“What makes you think we dated?”

He chuckled and continued to stroke her hand with his thumb. “The way he complimented your dress without looking at it. The grip he used when shaking my hand. The awkwardness you didn’t have with anyone else. Should I go on?”

“Please don’t.” She rolled her head to the side to look at him. He was handsome—more rugged than Christian with strong features and a dark completion. He was a natural in a suit—where she’d seen Christian squirm. There was an athletic build under that Armani and she’d seen it. They’d taken the kids swimming at his condo building last week. It had been the first time she’d been in a swim suit in over a year, but he hadn’t looked at the scars that riddled her body. He’d made her feel secure in her own skin.

Victoria took a breath. “We dated up until about eight months ago.”

He nodded and guilt plagued her.

“Okay, we didn’t just date. We were engaged.”

INTERVIEW:

It is my pleasure to feature Bernadette Marie, author of Home Run, on Room With Books.  Thank you for taking the time to answer my interview questions.

Please, tell me about your book, Home Run, and what inspired you to write it? Home Run is the 7th book in the Keller Family Series, and my readers inspired me to take the books into the next generations. As for the story line, I’ll admit, I’ve had Christian’s story line in my head for so long that I can’t remember where I was inspired with this story. In fact, I knew his fate before I finished his parents’ book. (They are book 2!)

When you start writing a new novel, do you outline the story or do your characters dictate what will happen?  I’m not in control at all when it comes to outlining. I have an opening paragraph and the characters seem to take me from there. Everything I get down on the screen is fresh from my head and it flows that way.

What is something about you your readers would be surprised to know? That sometimes they come to me with something in one of my books and I have to go look because I don’t even remember writing it. This is the way I roll. I write it one time and send it on. So sometimes they read me multiple times and I saw the story as I wrote it.

If you could write with any other author who would it be any why? Oh WOW, I have no idea. I love the work of Lisa J. Hobman, Gretchen Galway, and Susan Lohrer. All are new to the market in the past few years and each has an AMAZING voice! I think they all would be a hoot to work with on a writing project!

When you were little what did you dream of becoming when you grew up and why? In my kindergarten “When I grow up” part of my scrapbook it says a singer, a beautician, and a teacher. I have done all of those in some aspect! I’ve sang at weddings (although now if you asked I’d be a country singer.) I am an award winning professional nail care specialist and hair stylist (beautician is an old word!) And though I have never taught in a classroom everyday I did teach karate and I teach people to write and publish. I’ll take that! But why did I want to be those things? There was someone out there that made it seem like the coolest thing ever!

When did you decide to write and what prompted you to start? The need to fill my calling. I itch when I need to write. I just get crazy if things fill my head. And this has happened my whole life. So I always wrote. But what I did was stop reading. Well in 2007 I picked up a book and thought this is what I need to do! So I did. I wrote 12 books in 2007!

What music inspires your writing? I’m a true country music fan. It speaks to me like no other music ever has. It is magic to me.

Fun Facts:

What is your favorite breakfast? Toast with jelly or toast with eggs or just toast!

What is your favorite color? I have never had one. Right now I love orange and green though.

What is your favorite movie? You’ve Got Mail

What is your dream car? 1970 Ford Bronco. I want it in that pale green and white interior just like my grandpa’s! And it would be even better if it had and old “Go Bronocos” sticker and an NRA sticker in the window to look JUST like his!

AUTHOR Bio:

AuthorPic
