“Change your name, and your hair color. Then move far away from here and lay low. I’m sorry, but at this point, that’s the best advice I can offer you.”
Laura slumped in the rickety wooden seat next to the detective’s desk and pounded her sweaty palms against the armrests. He couldn’t be giving up on her case! But the truth of the situation mocked her with every hopeless word the defeated man spoke. Just like all the others, he’d been bested. One psychopath had managed to render New York’s finest and a host of private detectives impotent.
“I don’t understand. How can this monster make my life a living hell day after day and not get caught? How can he continue to terrorize me like this and not leave any trace of who he is?”
Detective Roberts gnawed on a sunflower seed and spit the remnants into a paper cup. Had he gotten a little grayer around the temples since the last time she’d been to the station? “He knows what he’s doing, how to play the game. I’m thinking he could be one of us, or someone who’s been in law enforcement. It’s uncanny the way he can do so much and not slip up. It’s pissing me off.”
You’re pissed?” she scoffed. “What about me? According to you, my life is about to be over as I know it.” She grabbed a tattered tissue from her purse and blew her nose. As she took a quick look in the makeup mirror, her complexion told a sorry story of incessant stress and sleep deprivation. What a mess. She plunged the mirror back into her bag and noticed paper clips strewn across his desk. One by one she gathered them into rows and columns. Then she gathered each row and deposited them back into the paper clip holder.
“Listen, I’m not giving up on you or on trying to find the sick bastard. I just think it would be best for you to disappear into a whole new life. As long as your stalker remains a mystery, it’s not safe for you to be… you. I could suggest what I’m sure all the others have— change your routines, move to another part of the city, or hire security…”
“I’ve done all that already, and he’s still around.”
“The last, most severe response is to skip town and start fresh somewhere else. Keep a low profile in some invisible job where nobody knows who you really are.”
“Do you realize what you’re asking me to do? I own a thriving book store. I have family and friends. I can’t just give it all up. Then he wins.”
“Isn’t he winning now?”
She raised a brow and turned away, preferring to straighten the various piles of paper on his desk and align each container to another rather than face the truth.

By writing paranormal romance and suspense, Deena spends her days and nights playing in the Garden of Good and Evil. She’s been known to have downed a few beers with her angels, and even put Satan in his place a time or two. She’s come to learn, however, that the human villains she creates can be more evil and depraved than the supernatural characters she conjures up.
Gilbert, Arizona is home now for her family, but she hails from Philadelphia, PA and lived for many years in Manalapan, NJ. When she’s not writing, she’s teaching kids how to do the same.

The Chosen One Trilogy

*This series contains adult situations not suitable for younger readers*

Life for
Hayden had never been overly exciting and that was the way she liked it,
so when she meets the gorgeous Jasper on a trail in the woods it never
occurs to her that life as she knows it is about to change. Quiet and
mysterious, Jasper draws her attention like nothing she’s felt before.
Suddenly, she finds herself a part of a world she never would have
guessed existed and learns of a future she isn’t sure she’s ready for.
Is or not she believes it, there are many who do and this makes life
dangerous. Hayden must find a way to escape being captured, save the man
she loves, and decide where she stands in the balance of good and
evil.

I turned my attention to Braw.

“Tomorrow night, we will have a small demonstration of your power. You
will help me liberate five beings from their demons. If all goes well,
we will wait four nights until the moons align with the star of Juns and
when the magic of this world is at its peak, we will channel the power
of Laif through the entire world, whereupon we will rid the world of
demons.”

My jaw dropped. “You’ll kill them all!”

Braw shook his head. “No dear. We will free them.”

“You don’t get it!” I could feel panic taking a hold of me. “The
Namaels, the Majs, they’re not possessed! That’s just who they are! It’s
genetic!” I looked up at Brice and was shocked by the blank look on his
face. “Brice! You have to explain to him. It will kill you!”

Brice turned slowly to look at me, his eyes wide.Hayden has made up her mind. If she doesn’t pick sides between the
Namaels and the Majs then innocent beings won’t die because of her. Of
course, things can never be that simple and when she is taken prisoner
by the humans a whole new problem arises. It doesn’t take long before
everything she thought she knew no longer makes sense. Could it be
possible that the prophecy was wrong?

Rainen looked up in time to see my horse come crashing into the ground
just a few feet away from her. Her eyes widened as she gazed into the
sky.

“Hayden! Shield!”

I threw my shield out to cover everyone who was closest to me. I felt my
energy touch Rainen’s and I glanced at her before looking up to see
what had made the screeching sound in the sky. My first thought was
about dropping my shield and to welcome the dragon flying over us. My
second thought was that this was no dragon. The creature in question had
to be to same size as Faren, the fire dragon I was bonded to, who was
about thirty feet long. Well, the same length as Faren. Whatever this
was it was lacking the bulk of a dragon. It looked more like a snake
with wings and ten sets of legs. It was covered from head to tail in
oily looking brown feathers.

I felt the push of magic come from up above and I pushed against it with
my own. The energy receded as the creature flew past us. I started to
pull back my shield and felt Rainen doing the same. The screeching sound
came again. Rainen swore under her breath. As the final battle draws near, Hayden must deal with personal loss,
unexpected good news, and the usual attempts on her life. Was the
prophecy right and can she do everything that is expected of her? Can
she go through with her plan when just one mistake could wipe out
everyone she loves?

EXCERPT:

She looked at him over her shoulder. His blue eyes seared her with heat. The intensity of his stare made her shiver.Lifting one hand, he laid his fingers against the blush of her cheek. Then hewrapped his arms around her from behind. He buried his nose in her hair and let his wolf rumble in satisfaction. “I’m ready to show you off at Julia’s whenever you are.”

“Let me check my face and hair. It’ll only take a minute.” She returned a few minutes later looking amazing.

Her hair was pulled back in a fashionable messy bun. A single strand was left loose to fall down the side of her face to the tip of her breast. He longed to follow that strand to its destination, scrape his teeth against her nipple and inhale her precious scent.

She was without a doubt the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen in his life. Rose placed her arms around his neck, and he relished how her warmth seeped into his body.

“I may have to change my mind, you look too good, and I’ll be forced to kill some idiot who tries to dance with you.”

She rolled her eyes at him and grabbed her purse. “Come on, Romeo, I’m ready for a boat ride and a turn around the dance floor.”

Simon held her hand as she got into the boat then jumped in and revved the motor. “I’ll go slow so I don’t mess up your gorgeous hair.” He winked.

She blew him a kiss and fluffed her hair dramatically.

Even going slow it only took twenty minutes to reach the pier serving the bar. He already heard the music and boisterous patrons. He cut the motor and helped her exit safely; boats weren’t designed for high heels.

Rose looked up and down the line of boat slips and shoreline. “Where’s her sign?”

“She doesn’t have one. We’d rather random humans didn’t wonder in. Mates are more than welcome, but the occasional human to happen upon the bar isn’t very well received.”

He led her to an open table. “I’ll get us drinks, would you like wine or a whiskey Coke?”

“A whiskey Coke sounds great.” Her eyes were bright with excitement as she checked out the crowd.

He squeezed into an open spot at the bar and waved over his cousin. “Julia! How are you, cher?”

“Oh, mon dieu! Simon, it’s so good to see you. I heard you found your mate.”

“I did.” He gestured to their table. “Rose is seated right there, stop over if you get a break.”

“Oh, elle est de toute beauté. You’re a lucky man, cuz.”

“Don’t I know it.” He grinned. “Can I get a Whiskey Coke and a beer?”

“Oui.”

He turned his back to the bar to check on Rose. Simon’s breath caught as she unconsciously moistened her lip with the tip of her pink tongue. That mouth was made for sin, with its plush lower lip. He imagined her mouth doing wicked things to a certain part of his anatomy. Blood thrummed in his veins.  Simon turned to inconspicuously adjust himself, his faded jeans were suddenly way too tight. Her intoxicating scent of coffee and cinnamon rolls licked at his groin even from across the room. He wanted to rub himself all over her, saturating her with his scent whenever they were in public. His wolf wouldn’t be satisfied until they were mated.

Gazing at her across the room his blood surged, he imagined her naked on his bed, her thighs parted in invitation. He lowered his head and tasted her passion. Loving her long into the night, her excited cries entwining with his hoarse groans as they made the bed shudder and shake. He shook his head. He really needed to get control of his randy thoughts. This was date night and he would show her a good time away from his bed for once. Down boy, he snarled at his wolf. When he glanced at her again she was snickering and shaking her head at him. He must be imagining loudly.

“Here you go, no charge, and congratulations, Simon.” Julia rapped her knuckles on the bar top before she turned her attention to making another customer’s drink. She was very busy, so he left her to it. He’d barely taken his seat when the band took the stage for another set. He stood and held his hand out to Rose. “May I have this dance?”

“Why, yes, you may,” she said playing along.

Simon held her close enough to see the sparkles in her blue eyes. He loved the way her gaze lit up when she was happy. But his wolf itched to see her eyes dazed with passion as he made love to her, and then sated and sleepy afterwards. For now holding her on the dance floor would do. Rose’s intoxicating fragrance surrounded him, teasing his senses. He was in heaven.

He cupped her cheek with a large, warm palm. “I’m so happy you moved into our house, Rose. Having you in my arms makes me the luckiest man in the world.” The moment she agreed to move to his house he’d called it their home. His glowing blue eyes regarded her with a tenderness that made her breath hitch.

She tightened her arms around his neck, urging his face closer to hers. “I didn’t want to go back to Anna’s, to an empty bed anymore,” she told him. “If you really plan to have me as your mate, it only made sense.”

“Just say the word and I’m yours completely. Forever.” He smiled, then dipped his head, kissed her deeply and nuzzled her.

REVIEW:

Someone is out to destroy the Le Beau family and will use any means necessary to see it done.

With Simon returning from his tour in the marines, physically and mentally drained, he is unable to shift from his wolf form to his human form. Anna, Cade’s mate, begins to use her gift to heal him. The progress is slow but steady until Rose enters the picture and Simon knows he has met his other half, his mate, and begins to help in the healing process.

What happens when Rose goes missing? Will the Le Beau’s find her in time to save her life, and Simon’s?

V.A. Dold has once again written characters that I can sink my teeth into. Simon and Rose’s story is every bit as intriguing and romantic as Cade and Anna’s story in Cade. Simon and Cade can both be read as stand alone novels, but I love the continuity of the story when read as a series.

Join me once again as I pant for more of the Le Beau brothers and the next novel from V. A. Dold. I highly recommend you pick this book up and don’t put it down until you’ve read it all the way through.

PYROS (a DarkWorld Origins novel)

This short is the origin story of sexy Fire Mage Logan Westin from Skin Deep.

Logan Westin, is the brooding hunk that steals Kailin Odel’s heart in SKIN DEEP. Even the fact that she’s a panther shifter and he’s plain old human couldn’t stop the sparks from flying between those two.

But Logan has his own little secrets, a history that weighs down on him, memories that seem to escape him. PYROS tells you where Logan comes from both in the origin of his powers and the source of his troubled mind.

And remember, Pyros comes before Skin Deep chronologically.

Excerpt

It was supposed to be a special day.

Logan Westin’s mother had promised to take him to his favorite diner. The one he loved to look at when they walked past on their way to the bus stop. Sometimes he’d slow down. Press his hands to the window and peer inside. Logan loved the look of the red-cushioned seated and the bright gleaming chrome.

Today was his chance to go inside and mother had said she’d get them strawberry milkshakes.

Logan was so excited he couldn’t walk. He had to hop or run, do something more than just stroll along as if their destination wasn’t a place that made him so excited he wanted to laugh out loud.

But Logan didn’t laugh. Father wouldn’t approve. And even though Father no longer lived with them, Logan knew he had to be careful. For Mother and for… For? Who else was he meant to protect?

Logan frowned and skidded to a stop in front of the diner. When he pushed the door open he inhaled the smells, and it all made him giddy with excitement. Coffee, and cooking meat and the polish from the black-and-white checkered linoleum beneath his feet. He pasted a huge grin on his face as he walked inside. Mother followed closely by a little girl whose laughter tickled his insides. She was as excited to be there as he was. They’d waited for so long.

When Logan turned to pull her pigtails he paused, stunned and confused. There was no one there. Even though her laughter still rang through the diner, the haunting sound so filled with happiness, so innocent and bubbly. He knew that voice. Knew if he reached out she’d hold his hand and her skin would be soft and smooth. Knew she’d grab his hand and pull him inside and accuse him of dragging his feet.

But there was nobody beside him.

Excerpt

Clutching the phone, I whispered Anjelo’s name into the device. The darned thing promptly advised me to speak more clearly, its tone annoyingly authoritative, seeming to laugh at me.

Damned machine.

Clearing my throat, I spoke his name again, this time restraining the urge to shout at the piece-of-crap phone.

Dial tone. Thank Ailuros.

“Kailin? What time is it?” Anjelo grumbled, his voice thick with sleep, grumpy and perplexed. He loved sleep, even more than his widely known love affair with Italian pasta. Nothing the school cafeteria supplied would ever tempt his taste buds. Anjelo had gourmet taste.

All he would’ve heard was my grunt of pain as I slid further to the floor, the phone suddenly too heavy to hold to my ear.

“Kailin, you okay?” His voice gurgled as if I were underwater—hollow, strange.
I took a deep breath and gripped the phone, pulling on every last dreg of energy, and said, “Sure. Shot. Bleeding. But okay.”

My voice cracked on each syllable, and I barely heard his urgent request for my location. I scowled at the phone, again so heavy it began to pull my hand to the floor, inch by inch.

Why was he shouting at me? I could hear him perfectly.

I spoke with a false calm. “I’m at the center.” Then I let the phone fall, unable to bear its incredible weight.

Scrambling. The knocking sounds of someone bumping into things in the dark. Muffled oaths, and then a slamming door.

Good. Anjelo’s coming.

From deathtalkers to demons, trackers to ghosts, Kai must fight against betrayal and evade the clutches of danger to set her sister free. Can she save Greer from a horrific death – and will she ever be able to forgive herself if she can’t?

Excerpt

I was too light-headed to do anything but sink to the floor, my knees at last losing the fight to hold me up. The heavy-bottomed drinking glass slipped from my grasp falling straight to the wood floor, smashing into a million pieces. As the glass hit the ground water burst from it like a geyser, spraying droplets all over the kitchen. And all over me.

Good job, Odel. Now who’s going to clean up this mess?

I lay where I fell, my face resting close to my poison-wreathed arm. I stared at it as it throbbed and pulsed, as if the poison had taken on a life of its own and was just waiting for the next moment to advance further into my flesh.

Meet the Author

TEEI have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practice given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each others loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

With the loss of her sister still weighing down both her conscience and her heart, Kailin Odel must take on the next part of her mission – find her mother and Anjelo and bring them back from Wrythiin.

Kailin uses her mother’s portal key and enters the Wraith world intent on saving the ones she loves, but from the moment she arrives her mission is fraught with peril.

Arriving in Wrythiin, Kai steps right into the middle of a Wraith rebellion. And only to find that though Anjelo is safe, her mother is held captive by a subversive faction of Wraiths once led by the Wraithlord that Kai had killed.

From Wraiths to Shapeshifters, rebel causes to fraying family ties, to inexplicable new powers, Kai must fight her darkest demons while entering the blackest pits of Wrythiin to save her mother.

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognize that reading was a doorway into my imagination.
