Chris Almeida and Cecilia Aubrey

Six years ago, our paths crossed in a most serendipitous way: through online role play. As funny as it may sound, we were “married/mated” by the group’s owner and from day one, we knew we just clicked. After a few months of writing some pretty hot fanfiction, we decided it was time to write about our own characters. Without a second thought, we embarked on this (crazy) joint writing adventure and Chris Almeida & Cecilia Aubrey were born. Since then, we have written 15 books in our Countermeasure Series (Romantic Suspense), and a novella in the A.W.E. Crew Series (Military Romance) published in Desiree Holt’s Omega Team Kindle World and plan to write our own brand of hot & spicy romance for many years to come. Deanndra Hall

Deanndra Hall writes stories in a world she knows well, with characters that are as fun, kinky, and crazy as she is. Although she’s an international bestselling author, she works and lives in far western Kentucky with her partner of 30+ years and three crazy little dogs. She’s written for business, industry, religious institutions, non-profits, and owned her own graphic design business, as well as working as a fiber and textile artist. Her personal best was 26,000 words in one day, but she advises against that – it took her the next three days to pry her swollen eyes open. When she’s not writing, she can be found working out at the local gym, hiking, kayaking, reading (of course), or working on a healthy recipe. And wherever she is, chocolate is sure to be nearby.

Melissa Keir has always wanted to be an author when she wasn’t hoping for a career as a race car driver. Melissa doesn’t believe in down time. She’s always keeping busy. Melissa is a wife and mother, an elementary school teacher, a book reviewer, owner of a publishing company as well as an author. Her home blends two families and is a lot like the Brady Bunch, without Alice. She loves to write stories that feature happy endings and is often seen plotting her next story.

Deelylah Mullin began her writing journey as a child. Since Fourth Grade Writers’ Group, high school creative writing classes, and even more creative writing in college (the first time), she’s been working to hone her craft and tell her stories. book blurb

As the bassist for the band Caged, the last three years have been one, long non-stop party. Sure, I’ve had some regrets. Everyone does. But getting trapped in a relationship isn’t one of them. I know good and well what happens when the attraction fades. I’ve seen it first hand. Love is a zero sum game, so why play? As long as I’m upfront about my feelings, no one gets hurt. Besides, I’m never in one place long enough to worry about tomorrow.

That is, until the band decided to take an extended hiatus in our hometown. That’s when I met Melody Sullivan. She’s the full-package. Whip smart and beautiful, with enough determination to take on anything life has in store. And the best part? Melody shares my philosophy on the fleeting nature of attraction. She doesn’t buy into the whole “happily ever after” crap anymore than I do. We’re perfect for each other. For now. And now is all I want.

With the expectations off the table, I can let my guard down and enjoy her company until the spark dies. And we both know it will. In a week, or a month. But until then, we’ll just keep having fun. The good kind, with lots of sex and no strings attached. And when it’s time to move on, we will. No drawn out goodbyes and no remorse.

That’s the plan, at least.

meet the author

I guess I should start with the basics: the backstory. I was born and raised in California. At this point, I’m usually asked what it was like to grow up near the beach, but sadly, I don’t know. I grew up in the “other” part of California. Perfect for an aspiring writer, if you ask me. You learn a lot about keeping yourself busy when the nearest house is a mile away…and it belongs to your grandparents.

I spent all my time with my nose in a book, living vicariously through the characters, until I wrote a book of my own. I was ten at the time. It was a scintillating piece that cast the family pet as the protagonist.

By the time I went to high school, I moved on to romance. Why? Because I met my very own prince charming. I wrote love poems in my journal about the green-eyed boy who stole my heart. He promised, the way all storybook heroes do, to sweep me away and take me on a grand adventure. And he did.

We picked up and moved to the Lone Star State and began the story of us. The best stories begin without a road map or a compass. Veering off course makes the journey so much more interesting.

True to form, just when I thought my life was set, we started the next adventure. I traded in my cowboy boots and followed my green-eyed boy to Las Vegas. My home will always be in Texas, but my heart is anywhere that he is. Our beautiful daughter made the journey with us. Our son stayed in Texas, to write his own story.

Somehow, in the midst of the chaos that is our life, I find time to write. Writing is what I love. I might stray from romance every now and then if that is what moves me…but I always come back. Some of the stories don’t seem romantic at all. They are gritty stories about flawed characters that find each other and hold on tight. Those are the stories that speak to me. Because that’s life. I believe that every story should have a happy ending—even the difficult ones.

Not all vampire hunters dress in head-to-toe leather and sit on rooftops overlooking a gritty vampire-ridden city. Meet Delia Roberts. At twenty-six, she’s a mid-level hunter with the Harriswood League, and, despite her best efforts, isn’t scaling the hunter hierarchy anytime soon.

Months earlier, desperate to prove herself, Delia snuck into an exclusive vampire masquerade, only to wind up with a bite on her neck courtesy of clan leader and gorgeous vampire Claude Grimm. Fearful of the League’s punishment for succumbing to a bloodsucker’s charms, Delia does what she can to hide the bite and pretends the night never happened.

These days, however, Claude is determined to win her over, insisting the spark they felt that fateful night is worth pursuing. As Delia tries to ignore her steadily growing feelings for the enemy and fend off a mounting quarter-life crisis, vampire clan tensions worsen around the quiet city of Harriswood, bringing with them a danger unlike any the League has ever seen.

One that might change the course of history for good.

book blurb

Set against the steamy backdrop of Tarpon Cove’s sun-kissed, tropical waters, sexy sleuths and best friends Madison and Fab are at it again dealing with the occasional dead body. Hidden just below the surface of the small town lies an underworld, one steeped in deceit, corruption, and deadly secrets. It is a smart, adventurous read that delivers heart-thumping, non-stop action. Join Madison and Fab as they solve the most twisted of cases, through unconventional ¬– and highly entertaining – measures… sometimes in flip-flops.

excerpt

Chapter One

A gust of wind blew the front door open, sending it ricocheting off the wall. Creole stumbled into the entry, his black hair whipping around his face. A crack of thunder boomed behind him, announcing the fury of the rapidly approaching storm. “Madison Westin,” he barked, sounding like an angry dog. “What in the hell are you still doing at home?”

Dropping a small bag at the bottom of the stairs, I watched as my boyfriend veered left, going into the kitchen, dripping wet from the sheets of rain slamming the house in all of Mother Nature’s ferocity. The wind’s howling sounded like someone screaming at times.

Luc Baptiste was his birth name, Creole the undercover moniker he used in his employment as a Miami detective, but only a handful of people actually knew that little fact. He stood over six feet, his muscles accentuated by his soaked t-shirt. At the moment, he had a two-day scruff of beard and his eyes were an irate blue; when they turned a deep cobalt, I knew he was more than mildly annoyed.

Another bolt of lightning flashed through the garden window. I counted under my breath and listened until thunder rocked in the distance, the eye of the storm getting closer. It was just beginning to make its presence known.

“You need an umbrella.” I watched as he shook the water off like a wet animal. “The news said the hurricane won’t make landfall until tonight.”

He scowled, looming over me, his brows pulled together. “You promised you’d be going with Fab and Didier to Miami.” He tugged on a tendril of red hair that had escaped my hair clip.

When I first moved to the Florida Keys, living by myself got old––fast. So, when Fabiana Merceau showed up one day with her suitcases, she caught me off guard, but I was happy to have her move in and had never been sorry that she became a permanent fixture. Not long after, Fab met her supermodel boyfriend, Didier, and decided, without a word to the man, to go to the hotel where he was staying, pack up his belongings, and unpack everything into the closet upstairs. Didier was a quick fit as a friend and family member. And nice to look at over morning coffee, or any other time. It made life easier that we had erratic schedules and were rarely all in the house at the same time.

“I didn’t make any promises.” I tried not to flinch at the weaselly tone in my voice. “No one asked my opinion, or I would’ve told all of you that I didn’t want to go anywhere.” I tossed him a towel from a stack that was going into the Hummer if I got scared enough to change my mind and leave. “The news always over-dramatizes the weather reports. It’s only forecast to make landfall as a category two. If it turns out to be a ‘rain event,’ they’ll still close the roads and take their time in reopening them, leaving us hanging out for several days since there’s no way to sneak back home with only one road in and out of the Keys.” I tried not to roll my eyes when, upon hearing the word “sneak,” his dark scowl returned.

“You’ve lived here long enough to know the back side of the storm can bring the most damage.”

I ignored his lecturing tone. I didn’t think now was the time to tell Creole that I wasn’t aware there was a difference. I’d ridden out a few hurricanes, often in the dark, the electricity not able to handle the onslaught, and when the sun came out again, the only damage left in their wake were piles of leaves and tree branches. I’d thankfully never experienced one of the more destructive ones.

Tarpon Cove sat at the top of the Florida Keys. The last damaging hurricane to roll through happened before my arrival. The old timers liked to say, “It’s been a damn long time since we had a direct hit.”

Lightning skated across the sky in non-stop action, the wind shrieked, and the lights flickered.

“Let’s go.” He reached for my wrist and pulled me into his arms, lifting me slightly, just enough to draw me against his chest.

My fingers curled into his thick, dark hair, and I traced a line over his lips and ran my hand over his jaw, feeling the scratch of rough stubble. He tilted his head and kissed me, then gave a low growl and deepened the kiss.

“What about the cats?” I took a moment to appreciate the muscled chest resting under my fingertips.  “Fab texted an address on Ocean Boulevard, which makes it a good bet that it’s a five-star hotel. Good luck sneaking Jazz and Snow in. I don’t know what kind of traveler Snow is, but Jazz will meow loudly enough to make his presence known. I’m not leaving them behind. I don’t understand people who do that.”

Snow, my long-haired white cat, had been pregnant when I first rescued her from life with fifty other unrelated felines. Thankfully, she’d only had two kittens—a boy and a girl. Neither looked remotely related. They had both been adopted by my friend and employee, Mac, who was eager to become a new cat mom. My only condition was that they be spayed or neutered; all three went to the vet on a discount plan.

Jazz, my hundred-year-old, long-haired black cat, had adjusted quickly to getting a trophy girlfriend in his old age. A few sniffs, a handful of hisses, and they were sleeping together.

“One of Didier’s designer friends offered up his beach-front digs.” Creole made a face, which usually made me laugh; instead, I returned a half-hearted smile.

Creole shook his head; he’d made up his mind that we were leaving, and he was not letting me talk him out of it. He crossed the kitchen and retrieved the cat carrier sitting on the floor by the island. He scooped up Snow and stuck her in first, followed by Jazz. Since they had both been rudely woken from sleep, it took him less than a minute, neither meowing, even when the door banged closed.

Our eyes flew to the garden window over the kitchen sink, where the pelting rain had picked up speed, sounding like gravel was being thrown at the glass. The winds ramped up to a yowl that steadily grew in intensity.

“We should stay.” I avoided eye contact, knowing he’d veto the idea, but I had to suggest it.

“We are not going to be one of those couples that makes the news because we had to be plucked off the roof. How would I explain being so stupid to my boss? Remember him? Chief Harder? And in the next breath, I’d have to justify the squandering of county funds on my rescue.”

“Take off your clothes.” I stared up into his deep-blue eyes and winked. “I’ll toss them in the dryer. Unless you want to drive to Miami in wet clothes?”

He peeled off his shirt, followed by his jeans. I openly stared while he undressed. “I know what you’re up to.” He shook his finger at me. “It’s not going to work. I’ve got a change of clothes upstairs.” He turned out of the kitchen and took the stairs two at a time.

The wind continued to grow, the storm beating the sides of the two-story Key West-style house that I had inherited from my Aunt Elizabeth. A sizzle of lightning strikes followed by an ear-splitting crash had me running to the French doors that led to the pool area. Flicking on the outside lights, I peeked out, and immediately noticed that the palm that had stood in the far corner since before my aunt bought the house now lay on its side, a row of flower pots crushed under its weight where it had landed perilously close to the pool.

“That could have been worse,” I muttered to myself. I didn’t like leaving the house to fend for itself any better than leaving the cats to do the same. I crossed my fingers, certain I had nothing to worry about; the house had withstood many pounding storms, never sustaining more than minor damage.

“Ready?” Creole called from the bottom stairstep, my suitcase in one hand.

        “Am I following you?”

“Nice try.” He laughed. “You and the cats are riding in my truck; that way, I can keep an eye on you.”

Happy not to be driving in the pouring rain, I gave in and crossed the room, picking up the small tote lying on the floor next to the banister.

It’s been five years since I’ve seen her.

Five years since Gabriella James damn near destroyed me with her betrayal, sending me to hell in a cage.

I’ve crawled free, escaped the mob, opened a night club, and continue to battle my demons through underground fighting and sex. But now Gabriella’s back, begging for absolution, wanting my forgiveness. All I want is what she’s denied me for all these years — her body.

Sex. That’s all we’ll ever have.

Because Gabriella is still keeping secrets. I see it in her eyes.

I don’t trust her, and I’ll never forgive her betrayal.

But that won’t stop me from taking her.

Over…and over…and over…

excerpt

“Leave the clothes,” he reiterated.

She shook her head, her grasp on her jeans tightening. “Humiliation wasn’t part of this bargain. I’m not walking out of here without any pants on.” A shadow crossed his face even as his lips firmed into a straight line.

“Humiliate you? You think I want to give every motherfucker out there material to go home and fuck their fist to? Let them look at those thighs and imagine them wrapped around their waist? Their head? No, Gabriella, my intention isn’t to humiliate you,” he murmured, the silken tone all the more dangerous.

“My sole focus is hustling your pretty little ass next door and upstairs as fast as possible. Whatever you think about me, I’d never place you in harm’s way, and that includes exposing you. Now,” he lowered his face until she could easily detect the green flecks in his golden eyes. Something flickered in those eyes. The same thing that, for just a moment, softened his mouth so he appeared almost…vulnerable. Hungry. No, no. Need. Like he needed her to walk out of this room with him. But in the next instant, the emotion disappeared behind a shuttered mask.

“Are you in…or out?”

She didn’t answer. Instead, she dropped the clothes and walked to the door, that brief flash of…whatever accomplishing what the pretty little ass and the possessive tone he’d uttered it in couldn’t.

Naima Simone’s love of romance was first stirred by Johanna Lindsey, Sandra Brown and Linda Howard many years ago. Well not that many. She is only eighteen…ish. Though her first attempt at a romance novel starring Ralph Tresvant from New Edition never saw the light of day, her love of romance, reading and writing has endured. Published since 2009, she spends her days—and nights— creating stories of unique men and women who experience the first bites of desire, the dizzying heights of passion, and the tender, healing heat of love.

She is wife to Superman, or his non-Kryptonian, less bullet proof equivalent, and mother to the most awesome kids ever. They all live in perfect, sometimes domestically-challenged bliss in the southern United States.

excerpt

I Met my Agent in the Bathroom and other Facts About My Path to Publication

I’d like to say I’m joking, but I’m dead serious. I met my agent and now BFF, Nicole Resciniti, in the bathroom at a writer’s conference. No, it wasn’t on purpose, and no, I wasn’t creepy about it. Here’s what happened from the beginning with some facts thrown in along the way. On May 1, 2009, I decided to write a novel. I didn’t take a class, I didn’t sit through “How To” instruction videos on YouTube. I honestly wanted to write a novel simply to see if I could. I’m a registered nurse by trade. To this day, I consider the comma as my evil nemesis. That said, I gave it a shot.

My first book was the Weird Girls, an urban fantasy romance about four unique sisters who obtained their powers as a result of a backfired curse. I’d read close to forty UF and paranormal romance novels in the months prior so I thought I knew what I was doing. Um, yeah. Not quite.

My first draft . . . and possibly the next seventeen revisions that followed didn’t have a plot. Plots are important. Seriously, every fiction book should have one. But one of the things I discovered was that plots aside, I could tell a story. So I kept rewriting, especially when those poor suckers―I mean, my kind and patient friends― who I begged to beta read for me continued to tell me that I had “something.”

Eventually, I did take an online course on query preparation and worked on pitching my series. I also attended a writer’s conference for the sake of connecting with other writers and for the opportunity to interact with agents and editors. During this time period (approximately August 2009 until about April 2011), I aggressively began to query literary agents who represented my genre.

Twenty, no, I’m mean fifty―okay, okay, perhaps seventy-five rejection letters later, in addition to quite a few more novel rewrites, I thought I was ready to pitch my series again. My husband thought I was ready, too, and sent me to a New York writer’s conference to give the traditional publishing venue yet another chance.

I was horribly sick and needed to use the bathroom even before the conference started. While I was blowing my nose to the tune of “I’m a baby elephant and I’m trying to call my mother” the woman in the stall next to me asked, “Allergies?”

I was in no mood to be social, but she was being sweet so I answered, “No, I just have a bad cold.”

She stepped out to wash her hands at the same time as I did. She smiled, I smiled back and asked her what she wrote.

“Actually, I’m an agent,” she answered.

And yeah, that was Nicole, and yes, the rest is history. Nicole sold the first three books of my Weird Girls series to Penguin following our little meet and greet in the bathroom. About a year following the publication of the first novel, SEALED WITH CURSE, Nicole sold two series to Random House: the continuation of my Weird Girls urban fantasy series, and my brandy new Shattered Past contemporary romance series.

I’m preparing to release my seventeenth novel, CRAVE ME, in February and am still over the moon following my two RITA® nominations earlier this year. As thrilled as I am, sometimes I still find myself recovering from the shock and the speed in which everything happened. But that doesn’t mean I’m not forever grateful to Nicole, my husband, and all my friends who supported me on my path to publication.

Lastly, if you take anything from this rant, let it be this: keep going and keep trying―no matter what your goals are and how many rejections you receive along the way. Crazy things can happen, like meeting your future agent in the bathroom.

playlist

I’ll admit. I have trouble focusing if there’s noise in the background―talking, singing, traffic―any kind, it doesn’t matter how soft. What can I say? My ADD will not be tamed.

While I require absolute silence when I write, there’s one thing I do need before I can commence my storytelling: music. It’s my ultimate go-to to jump start my creative process.

Music, as many of you are aware, is a powerful tool to trigger emotions and stir memories. So before I work out a scene, the first thing I do is search through my music list on my iPad and select songs to help me create the intended mood for that particular scene. The moment I’m done, I hit the play icon and engage in monotonous household chores like laundry.

From the first note to the last, my mind goes elsewhere, allowing me to envelop the intended emotion and work out the entire scene before my fingers strike the first key on my laptop. The music has to fit the tone of the scene and depending on its impact, can greatly affect the outcome. Thank the Killers for writing Somebody Told Me. That song rocks and has helped me create some of my darker and more action-packed fight scenes in my Weird Girls Urban Fantasy series. Once I connect with the mood the music invokes within me, the dialogue is easier to craft because I’m already “feeling” what my characters are feeling. I’m able to put their emotions: fear, excitement, sadness, etc. into words that fit their experience. Make sense? ☺

For my Shattered Past series, my selection of songs seemed to take a different turn specifically for the first novel, ONCE PERFECT in which the background is an ultra hip dance club. Behold, my ONCE PERFECT playlist which will give you an idea of the heat and heart behind some of the scenes:

In the Ayer―Flo Rida featuring Will.I.am

Just a Fool―Christina Aguilera & Blake Shelton

On the Floor―Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull

Wild Ones―Flo Rida featuring Sia

Wings―Little Mix

Echa Pa’lla (Manos Pa’rriba)―Pitbull

Halo―Beyoncé

Chasing Cars―Snow Patrol

Robi-Rob’s Boriqua Anthem―El General & C&C Music Factory

My badass hero and underground mixed martial arts fighter, Mateo, is Cuban. Latin music was a must. Now that you know my secret behind scene writing, want to know if my playlist measures up? If so, check out ONCE PERFECT, and follow it up with ONCE LOVED, ONCE PURE, and the spin-off series the O’Brien Family novels: ONCE KISSED, LET ME, CRAVE ME, and FEEL ME.

CECY (pronounced Sessy) ROBSON is the new adult and contemporary romance author of the Shattered Past series, the O’Brien Family novels and upcoming Carolina Beach novels, as well as the award-winning author of the Weird Girls urban fantasy romance series. A 2016 double nominated RITA® finalist for Once Pure and Once Kissed, Cecy is a recovering Jersey girl living in the South who enjoys carbs way too much, and exercise way too little. Gifted and cursed with an overactive imagination, you can typically find her on her laptop silencing the yappy characters in her head by telling their stories.

fun facts

I like carbs. There. I said it. I also like fried foods and most things with butter and salt.

I suffer from severe motion sickness: cars, planes, trains, boats―I don’t discriminate. And don’t get me anywhere near the dreaded merry-go-round.

Two of my favorite places are the Jersey Shore (specifically Point Pleasant) and the stretch of Interstate 78 West from New Jersey into Pennsylvania. I always make a wish as I cross the bridge over the Delaware River just for luck.

The summer before I started second grade, my parents took my brother and I on the ultimate road trip from New Jersey to El Salvador. No, this is not a joke. Yes, the event sucked. Have I mentioned I suffer from severe motion sickness?

I go out of my way to speak to managers when I’ve received good service.

I don’t like mean people. There’s no reason to be cruel or petty. Life’s too short.

I’m a registered nurse and once delivered a baby in a car.

I can open doors with my feet.

I named my son after my favorite X-Men.

I have an abnormal fear of bats and the Headless Horsemen and carry a crazy obsession for Thor.

Most of my relatives own machetes. I’m not sure why. How high is your grass? And surely a lawn mower is more effective.

I always wanted to do voice over for cartoons and can do a badass impression of Bobby Hill.

I love to write and entertain people. My hope is that I never run out of stories to tell.

That’s basically me in a nutshell―that, and I’m absurdly superstitious. For more information about me and my novels, please visit my website and follow me on social media.

book blurb

After a brutal war between Humans and Metas, an uneasy truce is declared in the Seldova solar system. After the treaty signing, the Complex is created on the lone planet, Lorn—a blended community of Humans and Metas, all sent to test the waters of a more peaceful existence between the two races. Living in a domed society can only mean one thing for the Humans and Metas. Chaos.

Reviled banshee Aqulla Dayshon sees death, feels the last moments of a victim’s life and senses the echoes they leave behind. They call for vengeance, and she is helpless to deny their cries, to deny her very nature.

Intra Jaylon Rowe is the law within the Complex. When a series of murders hit the community, he enlists Aqulla’s help. But solving the murders won’t be easy.

Boundaries will be pushed, and rules broken. And as lines are crossed and passion ignites, a banshee’s call will scream.

Death is here, and it wants them all.

January 1st, 6 AS (Ama Seldova) Arrival Day

Jumping down from the jetter, dust flying up around her, Aqulla sucked humid air into her lungs and walked a short distance from the group she’d arrived with. The space ride to Lorn hadn’t been enjoyable. It was just her luck she’d been seated next to a woman who’d killed her husband in a rage when she’d found him cheating. Part of Aqulla appreciated what the woman had done. Put in the same situation, she was certain she’d do the same, but that didn’t apply to the Banshee within—the hungry, bloodthirsty side of her that called for death. Denying that part of herself wasn’t easy. It was a battle she’d contended with most of her life.

“Hey! Don’t wander off. Get in line.”

Turning, Aqulla narrowed her eyes at the Intra solider, then looked in the direction he was indicating for her to go. Breath rushing out between clenched teeth, Aqulla almost turned around and climbed back aboard the jetter; maybe fifteen years in prison would actually be a better deal than the Complex.

“Move along!”

“All right, all right, jeez,” she hissed back, baring teeth.

The Complex stood tall and proud in the distance, its silver walls like glittering gems. The harsh sun reflected off the many domes, making it almost unbearable to look at. The center dome was by far the widest. Its sides sloped off behind two pointed domes at either side. At its base was a low rectangular shape that ran the length of the Complex. Aqulla gazed up, shielding her eyes but couldn’t make out the top; it soared into the sky, disappearing behind low hazy clouds. It was a massive, intimidating structure, a stark reminder that the Ama Seldova—the governing body and leaders of the new “peaceful” regime—were watching. Its gleaming walls might be a far cry from the dank cell she’d left, but The Complex was still a cell. A gilded cage she’d have to survive for the next two and a half years.

Walking forward, Aqulla was herded toward the many lines of people waiting to enter the community. She breathed a sigh of relief when the husband killer was shown to a different line, but it was short lived. It seemed the Complex was full of killers. Death’s echo lingered everywhere. But the lines weren’t only made up of criminals. Gazing across the rows, Aqulla could make out the lines of “nice” clientele. Even from this distance she could feel their disapproving stares, make out their rich-man clothes.

They’ll last five minutes with these lot. She smiled to herself, kicking the ground. Though I wonder what secrets they hide. If it had taken monetary bribes to get convicts, some on life sentences, to join the experiment, then what had it taken to get volunteers who already had money and “privileged” lives?

Taking another step, Aqulla ground her teeth together in an effort to keep from shifting. The Meta in front of her reeked of death; he’d killed so many. Aqulla couldn’t make out the individual echoes. He was a mass of swirling darkness threatening to pull her under. But she couldn’t give in to her natural instincts, no matter how much she wanted too. The Complex was her ticket to freedom, her only way to wipe out the past and maybe make amends with her family. Then hopefully, her grandmother wouldn’t see her as a stain on the family’s reputation. She’d be allowed back into the banshee coven, and they’d see she that she could live with the power of her gifts.

The line moved one more excruciating step further. Aqulla released a deep breath and slid her eyes shut. The line was impossibly long. Too long. Her mind wandered, picturing blood splattering the floor, the gargled breath of a man taking his last breath.

“What’s the matter, princess?”

Aqulla’s eyes shot opened as the Meta in front turned and fixed her in his sights. A slow, cruel smile spread on his face. Aqulla struggled to hold onto her vision. The screams of the people he’d murdered wrapped around her, calling for vengeance. The line moved along, but the Meta moved closer to her.

Claws sliding out, Aqulla fisted her hands. The sharp points of her claws dug into her palms drawing blood. The pain grounded her, brought her back from the very fine edge she was skating.

It didn’t stop the Meta, though. He was huge, towering a good few feet above her. His eyes were dark and full of sadistic delight as he sized her up.

“What have we here then?”

“I might look as weak as the many women you’ve tortured and murdered, but I assure you, Meta, one step closer and it will be your last.”

His head cocked to the side as he chuckled softly. “And how would you know who I’ve killed?”

Aqulla considered keeping her identity secret, but it might be the only thing that would save her. She was too close to snapping, too close to slicing her claws across his throat as she screamed her death cry.

“You’re dripping with death. I hear every scream, every whimper. They call for your blood. They want your death to be as slow and cruel as theirs. Tell me, Meta, will you run when you hear my scream?”

His face hardened. “All right, banshee, I get the picture,” he snarled, stepping away and moving to join the end of the line.

Aqulla relaxed her hands, letting out a breath of relief when a hand slid down her back and squeezed her ass. Blood rushed through her veins as her head filled with the urge to kill. Spinning, her knee slammed into his groin. As he collapsed, her claws found his throat. Blood dripped down his neck as she gazed into his eyes. This Meta had killed too, but in self-defense, not that it mattered much to Aqulla. Her scream was on the tip of her tongue. She’d begun to step over the line.

One, one thousand.

Two, one thousand.

Three, one thousand.

Four, one thousand . . .

My body jerks as my parachute opens, and it is time to maneuver myself to my landing destination.

Soon, I’ll hit the ground and the real ‘fun’ will begin. No problems are expected, but there is always the chance that something may go wrong.

In the seconds prior to landing, a whole lot of things go through your mind. Because you know that once your feet hit the ground, there isn’t a guarantee you’ll go home alive. You may never see your children grow or hold your wife’s hand as it wrinkles next to yours. So many things you never did and should have done go through your mind, and you have to push them back because you have to focus on what’s to come.

It’s times like these you become a praying man. You pray the mission goes well and you can get your men out alive. That even if you go home with a bullet in you, at least you go home alive.

You remember why you carry a gun and fight this fight. Not for yourself, but for something greater. You fight for your country, for your loved ones and their safety, and for honor. For something more than yourself.

Because nothing makes a man greater than what he’s willing to do and sacrifice for the betterment of those he loves.

Despite all my praying, something tells me that this time will be different than the times before. I am not afraid to die, per say, but I am afraid to die without telling my wife and daughter I love them one last time.

excerpt

She sighed and set her free hand at her waist. “We need to find my sister, not stand her havering.”

Sadness and worry flitted in her gaze. Heartache over her mother he assumed and mayhap a wayward sister. The grief seemed to consume her as they walked and Aidan loathed to see a sad woman—even if it was Laird Hope MacAlister. If she started crying he’d certain flee, for nothing was worse than consoling a woman in tears. But he doubted she’d show such vulnerability to him.

She glanced toward the other caves and then back toward the keep. She gave a frustrated sigh.  Her face soft with desperation to find her sister. She was worried and inside she was fretting and he knew only one way to take a woman’s mind off her troubles.

He stepped toward her and swept her in his arms. Her eyes widened as he descended, slowly so not to make her skittish, but with enough purpose she knew his desire. Her lips parted and her tongue darted out quickly to wet the plump surface. His lips brushed against hers with a soft caress. She gripped his arms and pushed. He kissed her again, slanting his mouth over hers. She stiffened, then her fingers dug into his biceps as her lips relented, accepted his kiss. As a moan escaped her lips, masculine triumph flared and he delved deeper. A sizzling leap of lust cursed through him. God, she felt good in his arms. Aidan ripped his mouth from hers and narrowed his gaze. His chest heaved. His blood sang. Through hooded eyes, he watched her and inhaled the womanly scent about her. Hope’s face was flushed, her eyes glazed. Aidan reached for her again.

With a flick of her wrist, a dirk appeared from its sheath and pressed against his ribs. “You touch me again, and you’re a dead man.”

excerpt

Eorl Ælberht’s Hall, 909AD

The thatch-roofed wattle and daub hall dominated the surrounding settlement. The largest in the shire, it befitted the seat of an Anglo-Saxon ealdorman with a hundred armed men in his employ and many more farmers serving him who could be called up with the fyrd to defend his land.

In this part of Mercia, he had called on them many times to keep the dreaded Vikings out of the Saxon kingdom.

Inside the hall, a host of men were gathered around the long tables in its centre, or sitting on benches against its walls. On a dais at one end of the hall sat a slender young woman gowned in woad blue, her chestnut-brown hair covered by a matching veil held in place by a gold fillet.

Looking around the hall at her husband’s gathered family and vassals, Lady Eadlin of Mercia raised her hand for quiet. The assembled company slowly acquiesced.

Her voice rang out, clear and commanding.

“Dear friends and family of my late husband, thank you for your good wishes. Eorl Ælberht was an important man and we honour him. As evidence of his esteem, today we welcome a messenger from King Edward of Wessex.”

She nodded in the direction of a hard-faced warrior, indicating that he should add more glory to her husband’s name. “Swidhun?”

The squat, battle-scarred man stood. “I bring greetings from King Edward, who esteemed Eorl Ælberht so greatly he gave his god-daughter, Lady Eadlin, in marriage to him.” He gestured towards Eadlin. “Ælberht was a supreme warrior.” The man raised his drinking horn high. “To Ælberht.”

The hundred-odd men in the hall echoed him.

Swidhun paused until the noise died down before continuing.

“Now the king once more has need of Lady Eadlin and wishes you to bid her farewell as she leaves to take up another role in our king’s service.” He raised his drinking horn again, to toast Eadlin. “To Lady Eadlin.”

A cheer rolled through the room.

Eadlin’s stomach lurched. She gripped the armrests of her ornate wooden chair. Schooling her face to show only interest, she smiled, eyes blank, her mind racing.

He could only want her to seal another alliance with an ealdorman through marriage.

“Well said, Swidhun. Thank you for your kind words,” she said.

Swidhun inclined his head towards her. “We must leave at dawn, Lady Eadlin.”

“So soon?” Her voiced dropped so only Swidhun and a few around him heard.

Face set, his words clipped, he replied, “The king commands it.”

No! Looking around the room, Eadlin forced another smile to hide her fear and anger. Her voice carried across the hall, clear and calm. “I must bid you all good evening and prepare for my departure. I leave you under the capable leadership of the new Eorl, Ældred.” She gave a brief, tight smile at her stepson seated nearby.

Standing, Eadlin paused and smoothed her richly embroidered dress. Nausea threatened her poise. Collecting her fractured thoughts, she turned and made her way to the doorway that led to the darkening evening. She leant down once to whisper to Cenric, a grizzled warrior seated near the opening. “I have need of you.”

The man followed her outside.
