Pure evil rises once again in Albia…

Three years have passed since Baron Reen’s trial. A terrible accident on the island of his exile has transformed him into a nightmarish scarecrow creature with dark, mysterious powers. Staging his own suicide, Reen breaks free of his prison and, with the help of the former queen Sofira, embarks on a ruthless quest for vengeance against his worst enemy, the woman responsible for the overthrow of his schemes and his own ruination: Brynne Sullyan.

Sullyan is tasked with investigating Reen’s suicide. The missing body and a series of disasters in Port Loxton—a vicious murder, a brutal ambush, and a devastating fire—raise suspicions in her mind. She probes deeper, determined to uncover the truth, unsuspecting of the evil that’s about to be unleashed…

The Captives
The red-haired man who had once been Othal, swordsman of Lerric’s personal guard, looked about him in confusion. He had somehow traveled through a misty, shimmering cloud to this strange place, and he had a task. He had a vague recollection of something dreadful happening to him, something violating, invasive, and agonizing, but had no clear memory of what. Or who had done it. He could not even remember what he had done yesterday. His life before this moment was a blur. All he knew was he hurt and an imperative existed in his mind. If he did not carry out his orders to exacting standards, he would suffer horribly.
Shivering in fear, he scratched at his chest, yelping when his dirty nails caught on a painful spot. He glanced down at his clothing, pulling it away with one hand. The raw, running sore that met his eyes nearly provoked a memory, but it left as quickly as it came. As he readjusted his clothing, Othal forgot both pain and sore.
He hid among winter-bare woodlands, close by a worn path. Evergreen shrubs surrounded black-limbed trees, affording him cover from the wind and the cold, as well as casual eyes. Not that there were any. He had been here since dawn without seeing a soul.
His eyes, prickling from the cold, gazed at the rope. One end was tied to the bole of a tree opposite; the other lay at his feet. He had brushed snow over its length with a branch, also wiping out his own tracks. His subjugated mind did not question what he had done. His actions were automatic. All he needed to do now was wait.
There it was. The thump of hoof beats. His own heart pounded as he readied himself. He took up the free end of the rope, eyeing the pathway to his right, from whence the rider would come. Courage and sure-footedness were prerequisites for runners and their horses. The pair would be moving fast.
Othal had orders not to permanently damage horse or rider. It was vital they be fit to carry out their duties. He must time his attack to perfection. Too early and the horse might see the rope in time to jump it cleanly. Too late and it might tangle its limbs, breaking a leg or its neck. Neither was acceptable. Othal desired the horse to swerve abruptly, throwing its rider, who should land softly on the recent fall of snow.
Well, that was the plan.
The muffling snow was playing tricks on him and the pair was closer than Othal had thought. He was nearly too late with the rope. He jerked it tight at the last moment, but still the horse tripped over it. Squealing in fear and pain, the beast thudded to the ground in a flurry of legs, kicking out and scattering snow. Taken by surprise, the rider yelled, pitching over the horse’s shoulder to land heavily at the base of a tree.
Othal leaped from hiding, another shorter length of rope in his hands. He sped to the dazed rider as the horse scrambled upright. He knelt beside the groaning rider and pulled the young man’s arms tight behind his back.
The rider yelped again, but Othal took no notice. The youth’s eyes flew open, fastening on Othal as the ropes bit. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he rasped, his pale face spattered with dirty snow. “I’m a King’s runner. You risk death by harming me. I carry nothing of interest to you, scum, so you might as well let me go. And my horse is branded, so you won’t be able to sell it.”
Othal knew this. He knew all about Elias’s runner system and how it operated. He had heard Lerric’s grudgingly admiring comments many a time, and his sullen laments about not having the funds to set up a similar service himself. Othal ignored the rider and crossed to the shivering horse. He caught its reins, soothing it with a murmured word. He ran a practiced hand down its slender legs, relieved to find no heat in the tendons. He led it forward a few steps. It was sound.
He breathed a sigh of relief. He had fulfilled the first part of his orders. Going back to the young man, who was still trying to convince his captor to let him go, Othal stared down at him. The youth was barely more than a boy, and Othal felt a twinge of doubt. Would the lad be old enough? Would he have the knowledge his master required? What if he wasn’t a local? But that was not likely. This place was so remote, so isolated. No one in their right mind would come here looking for employment if they lived far away. Many did not even know of its existence.
Bending to the lad, Othal tapped him below one ear with the butt of his dagger. The youth collapsed, unconscious. Checking that the precious message pouch was still secure on the runner’s belt, Othal picked him up and slung him across his horse’s saddle. Using the rope he had brought the beast down with, Othal fashioned long reins to the horse’s bit. He walked behind the animal, driving it like a plow horse, stepping in the prints of its hooves to mask his tracks as he made for his hiding place. Now all he had to do was wait for his master’s call.

Snippet:

Lerric, aging client-king of Bordenn, stood in the dark doorway. A damp, noisome smell assailed his nose, the drip of water reached his ears. Lerric shivered, his reaction not wholly due to the chill in the air.
Deep within the lightless room he detected a hint of movement. Creaking leather, a hiss of pain. Lerric stepped one pace farther from the door’s protection and raised his lamp. As soon as the faint yellow light touched—and flinched from—the dark form huddled on the truckle bed along the far wall, a vicious curse sounded. A crooked hand flew up to shield eyes that could no longer bear good, honest light.
“Put that out, you bloody fool! Would you blind me entirely?”
“Ah . . . your pardon.”
Lerric shuttered the lamp and gloom reclaimed the cell. When his eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, the king assessed the cell’s lone occupant.
Habitually dapper and well-fed, his body had assumed scarecrow proportions. A parody of his former self. The fastidiously clean and expensive raiment was replaced by a thin, shabby robe of dusty black. A darker blot amid the shadows, it barely disguised the gaunt frame it covered.
Gone were the arrogant swagger and confident poise, replaced by a savage desire for revenge, a thirst for retribution. Three years of incarceration and hopelessness, of nursing raging grievances, hadn’t lessened the pious fervor and deeply-held beliefs. Thirty-six interminable months of imprisonment and deprivation had served only to deepen his determination to rid the land of those to whom he owed his life. Those without whose mercy he would have suffered a horrific and agonizing death.

Snippet – from Book 2, The Circle:

“Rienne, what am I going to do?” Sullyan’s voice was hoarse with emotion. “Elias has declared war on Andaryon. I couldn’t stop him—he wouldn’t listen. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he has commanded me to tell him everything I know about the Citadel’s defenses and Anjer’s battle strategies. How can I possibly obey him?”

Rienne gasped. “He asked you to do that? Doesn’t he realize what he’s doing? There’s no way on earth Timar’s involved in Prince Eadan’s abduction.”

“I know, Rienne, I know. I have told Elias so, but he does not wish to hear me. He is full of fury and avid for revenge and the need to do something to regain his son. I cannot blame him for that. But war! It will achieve nothing but death and the destruction of the alliance. This could put us back decades and resurrect all the old grievances still simmering beneath the surface. Which is exactly what our enemy wants, of course.”

Rienne stared at Sullyan, totally overwhelmed. Events were moving too fast for her. “What will you do? What canyou do?”

“I have no idea. I need time to think. But I simply cannot use my knowledge to help Elias attack Timar.”

Snippet From King’s Champion

Sullyan cantered Drum across the plains for the first mile or so, weaving through the trees, Robin and Marik at her back. Then she slowed the stallion to a brisk walk, allowing the other two to catch up. She made for the high road leading directly to the fortress gates, seeing with satisfaction that they were the only people on the road. Warning Marik and Robin to keep their hands well away from their sword hilts, she rode confidently

forward, eyes narrowed against the snow glare.

The Count nudged his horse up on her left side, a gloomy expression on his face. “I expect the sentries and outriders will see us soon.”

She gave a snort. “My dear Count, there have been loaded crossbows aimed at our hearts for the past half hour.”

Marik started and looked wildly about, but there was no one in sight. Sullyan continued in silence, highly visible on the coal-black Drum. Her borrowed longsword reared in its harness over her shoulder.

They were about a mile and a half from the gates when the sentries rode out of cover and confronted them. Sullyan immediately halted in the middle of the road, waiting for the twenty-strong patrol to approach. Marik and Robin flanked her. She studied the Hierarch’s men with professional interest. The purple and gold of his livery was evident on their combat leathers, and their leader bore a Lieutenant’s rank insignia, the equivalent of an Albian Captain. A medium height man in his middle thirties, he halted his men a few paces from Sullyan and rode forward alone. He sat his dark bay stallion easily and his hand never left the hilt of his sword, despite the ready crossbows behind him.

He ignored Robin, swept Marik a contemptuous glance, and then turned his attention to Sullyan. He regarded her for a few moments, his pale brown eyes taking in her gold insignia, her battle honors, and King’s Envoy shooting star. When he addressed her, his tone was barely respectful, the attitude of a confident man unused to dealing with armed women.

“Major.” He gave her a slight nod, the only sign of respect she would get.

“Lieutenant.” She accorded him the same bare courtesy, giving her voice an identical inflexion.

His eyes narrowed as he reassessed her, taking in her relaxed but alert attitude and the casual way she sat the huge black stallion with its light saddle and bitless bridle. His own mount bore the usual heavy cavalry saddle that could keep a dying man upright, and foam was dripping from the iron bit in its mouth.

Snippet from King’s Artesan

Robin held out both hands, palms upward. Drawing on his will, concentrating on the space between his hands, he called forth a shaft of Fire and held it there. Molding it to his will, he forged it until it became a glowing, flaming sword across his hands.

Sullyan nodded, pride shining in her eyes.

“Gods, but I’m a fool,” Taran groaned. Cal snorted and Taran glanced at him. “I wish I’d taken your advice. I never should have gone.”
Cal frowned and Taran paused before adding, “Cal, I killed someone.”
Cal’s dark eyes widened and he slumped to the bed, staring in disbelief. “How the hell did that happen?”

The scarecrow’s evil knows no bounds …

Having failed to save her friends from the scarecrow’s malevolence, Sullyan plunges into despair. Reen holds all the aces and nothing now, it seems, can prevent him from wreaking utter destruction. Nevertheless, she must try one last time, cast her life away if necessary, to avenge her loved ones. She marshals her forces and marches on Bordenn.

Yet Reen has usurped the power of a Master Artesan, and knows everything Robin once knew. Luring Sullyan to Bordenn is his only desire. The scarecrow squats in his lair, avid for Sullyan’s power, holding one final bargaining chip to force her into surrender. Her only glimmer of hope lies in a vague reference contained in the ancient diary of a long-dead Supreme Master—that, and a whispered message from a familiar spirit.

Yet even hope has its price, and life demands life in return.

Top Ten List

  1. Anything to do with animals, especially dogs and horses. My favorite horse breed is the Friesian, which is why I put one in my novels. I also own two rescue dogs and support many animal charities.
  2. Singing, especially folk-style songs. I also sing in my local church choir.
  3. Chocolate!!
  4. Dragons and (I have to admit!) unicorns. I have collected figurines and statues of dragons and unicorns since I was small and have a vast collection, some of which live outdoors. But I don’t like “twee”, only ones that look like they could be real.
  5. Reading, especially fantasy and sci-fi.
  6. Country walks.
  7. All wildlife, especially butterflies. I used to breed and release UK varieties, and belong to the Butterfly Conservation Society.
  8. Did I mention chocolate?
  9. Spending time with family members.
  10. Playing my bodhran (Irish drum). I can’t read music so decided to take up drumming instead! It’s fun and very theraputic.

First lets take a look inside the book with this excerpt:

As they penetrated deeper into Lerric’s palace, Sullyan grew more and more uneasy. A strange feeling she could not name gnawed at her senses. Partly it was fury, for this was where her life mate had breathed his last under unspeakable torture, and somewhere in this deadly place lurked the monster who had devoured his soul. Her heart clamored for vengeance; her spirit cried for mercy.
Yet she could not locate her enemy, and this gave rise to frustration. Shielded as she was, still she sent forth probes; slim, delicate slivers of power, just enough to touch a wary mind, just enough to give her that edge. Failing continually, her fury grew.
She also felt dread, fear, reluctance. The more empty rooms they searched, the fewer remained. Their quarry was running to ground, and soon they would unearth him. Except he wasn’t running and they were the quarry.
This aspect of her growing unease affected her the most. The palace was a trap and she had entered it willingly. She was dancing to another’s tune, and her choices were limited. Nevertheless, she advanced, caught in this master’s game, compelled by love and justice. Her wounded soul bled with every step she took.
They remained unchallenged and unhindered throughout the length of their search. Nothing moved to dismay them, nothing sounded to alert them. The rooms were all silent, the hallways deserted, no signs of life even in the private rooms Elias had so recently visited. The men of Sullyan’s company strode at her back, eyes alert, swords at the ready, muscles tensed for action. Action they were denied until, at the very last, they came to a large iron-bound door proudly displaying the hunting dog emblem of client-king Lerric.
Limp standards hung on either side of the door, luxurious fabrics worked with gold thread suspended from poles of silver. A horn rested in a niche in the wall, just waiting for the herald to sound it. But the herald was absent and the standards hung still, cold air whispering about them.
“Lerric’s throne room.” Elias’s body quivered with tension. He had caught Sullyan’s frustration and the futility of their search so far was jangling his overstretched nerves. “Anteroom first and then the main hall. It’s large, even by Loxton standards.”
Sullyan didn’t reply and the King cast her a glance, unwilling to intrude on her thoughts. Her men stood behind her in silence.
Finally, she spoke, her voice sounding distant and ragged. “They await us in the anteroom.”
Elias’s head came up eagerly, like a hound scenting prey. “The Baron?”
She shook her head, her expression fixed and grim. She brought up her sword. “His guard.” She turned to Elias and spoke curtly. “Stay by me. Remember your oath.”
It was an unmistakable order and he nodded before turning his attention back to the door. The others shifted behind him, eager for action; anything to end this uncertainty. Those carrying torches left them in sconces or extinguished them. The hallway faded around them.
Wil came abreast of Sullyan and laid one hand on the door, weapon held ready in the other. Sullyan took a deep breath, held it, let it out. On the next inhalation, she nodded to Wil, who took hold of the latch and pushed open the door.
The anteroom was large, as large as Elias’s dining hall. Like the rest of the palace, it was in darkness, but torchlight from the hallway flickered faintly on steel deep within the room. The stirring of feet could be heard, the intake of breath. But no one came to challenge them, no one came to fight. Sullyan let her fury build. It would seem she would have to carry the fighting to them.
So be it.
“Gentlemen. Let us make an end.”
