About the Book
“What if Peter Pan was a homeless kid just trying to survive, and Wendy flew away for a really good reason?”
Seventeen-year-old Kettle has had his share of adversity. As an orphaned Japanese American struggling to make a life in the aftermath of an event in history not often referred to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and the removal of children from orphanages for having “one drop of Japanese blood in them” things are finally looking up. He has his hideout in an abandoned subway tunnel, a job, and his gang of Lost Boys.
Desperate to run away, the world outside her oppressive brownstone calls to naive, eighteen-year-old Nora the privileged daughter of a controlling and violent civil rights lawyer who is building a compensation case for the interned Japanese Americans. But she is trapped, enduring abuse to protect her younger sister Frankie and wishing on the stars every night for things to change.
For months, they’ve lived side by side, their paths crossing yet never meeting. But when Nora is nearly killed and her sister taken away, their worlds collide as Kettle, grief stricken at the loss of a friend, angrily pulls Nora from her window.
In her honeyed eyes, Kettle sees sadness and suffering. In his, Nora sees the chance to take to the window and fly away.
Set in 1953, Nora & Kettle explores the collision of two teenagers facing extraordinary hardship. Their meeting is inevitable, devastating, and ultimately healing. Their stories, “a collection of events, are each on their own harmless. But together, one after the other, they change the world.”

FAMILY
KETTLE
Time is hard to tell when the lights flicker on and off with a mind of their own, but the frigid air makes me suspect it’s nearly dawn. One day, they’ll stop working all together as the wires erode from lack of maintenance.
I scrape my eyelids of sleep and grit, propping myself up on my elbows. The sound of snoring kids is intermittently drowned out by subway cars whooshing through tunnels. No one stirs. The rattle of wheels over tracks is a lullaby, comforting, reassuring.
Two nights home and now I have to leave again.
I sigh loudly and collect my gear. Keeper’s small voice penetrates the hazy light. “You going already?” she whispers as she wipes the back of her hand under her runny nose. I crawl over sleeping bodies and touch her forehead. She feels a little clammy, a little too warm.
“You feeling okay, Keeps?” I ask softly.
She nods her head and coughs into her palm. “Just a cold,” she says and smiles for me. Her big, green eyes blink, red rimmed. “Mubbee I got allergies?” she asks.
I sling an arm around her slim shoulders and laugh, pulling her to me. “Maybe. Just take it easy today. Make sure everyone cleans up before lunchtime, eh?” She scribbles notes in a frayed pad of paper I gave her six months ago, licking the tip of the pen every now and then.
The corners of her mouth are stained with black ink when she grins and nods. “Yes sir, Kettle.” She sniffs again, and I hand her a handkerchief from my pocket. She nuzzles into my chest, almost purring just like a cat.
“I don’t need anyone getting sick, okay?” I warn with a wink.
She coughs, trying to cover it by stooping over. Her black hair falls over her face in one solid lump. I light a candle and peer at the watch nailed to the rocks behind me. I’ve only got about half an hour.
“Keeps?” She swings around, hair hanging over her eyes and in her mouth. “Come here, let me show you something.” She shuffles closer, looking a little scared. I pull out a hairbrush from the bag I brought home last night. “This is a hairbrush.” She squints at it, waiting for it to do something. “It’s for your hair, so it’s not so, um, hard to manage…” She tips her head to the side, looking for all intents and purposes like a puppy about to have its first bath. She’s our first and only girl resident. “Come sit in front of me.” I pat the ground gently, and she slides backward. “Don’t be scared. I’m not going to hurt you,” I reassure, although I’m not one hundred percent sure that’s true. “Keeps, what did I say when you came to live here, when you became a King?”
“Dat I could stay as long as I wanted and dat you would keep me safe,” she replies warily.
I grip the brush firmly in my hand and gesture to the section of cold stone in front of my crossed legs. “Do you believe that’s true?”
She scrunches her eyes shut and says, “Yes.” Crawling over to sit in front of me, she turns her mound of thick, black hair my way.
I raise the brush to her head, place it in her hair, and make a liar of myself.
*****
The boys cover their ears to shield themselves from her caterwauling.
“Throw her back,” Krow mutters, scowling, which only makes her scream louder.
She bends her head back every time I run the brush through and screeches like I’m actually scalping her. The brush snags in the dirty clumps, and I can’t pull it through. I’ve said sorry about a hundred times but now that I’ve started, I feel like I need to finish it. She needs to look less like a street urchin and more like a child on her way to school if we’re going to remain inconspicuous.
On the hundredth and fiftieth scream, Kin finally storms over. He gets up in her face, and I think he’s going to tell her to shut up. It’s what I should have done, but I feel at a loss on how to deal with a ten-year-old girl who thinks I’m torturing her.
“Keeper, what would you like me to do? I can cut it all off or you can let us clean it up. Right now you look like a drowned rat wearing a dead cat toupee. Do you want to look like a drowned rat with a bad hairpiece?” Kin says.
She shakes her head and whimpers. Then she whispers, “I wanna look like that.” She points to the catalogue I’ve been teaching some of them to read from. A sweet girl with long brown hair in two plaits on either side of her head smiles thinly at us, her eyes round and blue, her ribbons frozen in mid-swing.
Both Kin and I stare at each other and gulp. Then Kin puffs out his chest, swears, and laughs. “If you can rescue women from burning buildings, together we can surely plait a ten-year-old girl’s hair.”
The boys snicker. “Shh!” I snap and then look to Kin. “Here you do this side and I’ll take the other.” We separate her hair into two uneven handfuls and go to work. With my mouth pressed tight, I start, with one eye on the photo we’re trying to replicate. The other eye is watching Kin try to plait hair with his giant paws. I swear he’s starting to sweat. I snort, gripping her hair so it doesn’t fall out.
Kin’s face jerks to mine. “What?”
I look down at the ground, my eyes watering. “Um, nothing…”
Kin holds his twisted clump of hair tightly, a concentrated, almost cross-eyed look on his face. “What?”
A laugh escapes my mouth, and all the boys join in. “I can’t watch you. My God. It’s like watching a bear try to peel a plastic banana!”
Kin sighs in exasperation but refuses to give up, a small smile creeping into his stern expression. “Yeah well, you’re surprisingly good at this. Anything you wanna tell us?”
Laughter fills the rocky space. It’s warm and bright, scrubbing the walls of grime and filling my heart.
When we’re finally done, I grip my plait tightly in my fingers, searching for something to tie it with. Krow steps forward and begrudgingly hands me two bread bag ties, which I wind around the ends. I push Keeps gently in the back. “There. That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Turning around, she gives me a look of ‘you’re kidding, right?’ and scampers to the mirror. She frowns when she meets her reflection. Her whole face is now visible, smooshed cheeks and pinchy little ears. She looks cute. She tips her head down, and one large lump falls over her eyes. I remember the gift I bought that I was saving for her King birthday. Fishing around in the paper bag, I retrieve two red clips with white polka dots on them. Keeps stares at herself like she doesn’t know it’s her face. I sweep her fringe back and clip it in place. She touches it lightly, like I’ve just put a diamond tiara on her head.
She smiles sweetly, her dark lips brimming with teeth. “I think you should cut it off. I’m a King, not a queen,” she states proudly.
I stall in shock, and then my heart does that proud, pumping-strong thing. Kin slaps my back, and I stumble forward. Keeps draws in a sharp breath as I fall and begins coughing uncontrollably.
“We’re going to be late,” Kin says, extending a long arm in my direction, his eyes sliding to the coughing girl sitting delicately on a faded purple cushion. “We’ll think about the haircut.”
I smile at her. “Think about it some more, Keeps. You might miss it when it’s gone.”
Her determined eyes tell me otherwise. Her sallow, sweaty skin worries me.
We leave the boys and… girl… with instructions and head to work.

Excerpt

It wasn’t long before I saw the doctor walking toward the hospital bed where I was sitting, wearing white latex gloves and holding a tray of glass tubes. When he came closer to the table, I saw an extra instrument he was carrying and freaked.

“What’s that supposed to be for?” I stared in terror at a three-inch long needle in Gunn’s hand.

“I’m sorry. You weren’t supposed to see this.” He hid the needle behind his back. “I need to gather some cerebral spinal fluid since we’re trying to rule out any neurological irregularities.”

“You may have worms.” Galen raised his brows and nodded. “In your head.” He tapped his temple with two fingers. “They make you crazy.”

I ignored him, and turned my attention back to the doctor. I bit what was left of my thumbnail.

“Does it hurt?” I asked.

“He’ll apply an anesthetic first. You won’t feel much,” David said.

Much?”

“It won’t hurt,” Gunn said, blinking. Did he blink when he was lying?

“You can bite on my hand if you have any pain. It won’t hurt me.” David leaned in close to my ear. “I can’t sedate you because he’ll find the remnants of my anesthetic in your lab results.”

“Isis, you mustn’t bite too hard on his hand,” Galen said in a hushed voice. “Creatura have rabies.”

“What?”

“Shut up, Galen.” David frowned.

“It’s the truth,” Galen said.

“Stop it.”

Rabies, Galen mouthed, widening his eyes.

Excerpt - Copy
from Shattered Memories by Susan Harris
Suddenly I was angry… angry at my parents for dying and leaving me alone… angry at Sophia for being too small to defend herself… angry at Daniel for giving me false hope… angry at myself for letting pathetic fantasies take over my mind.
I jumped off the bed and screamed. The next thing I knew I had used what little strength left to overturn the bed, scattering all the bedding to the floor. I took one of the pillows and beat it across the wall. Then I kicked the bin with such force it smashed into the door with a sickening thud.
While continuing on my furious rampage, the door slid open and strong arms captured me from behind, holding my own in place. I struggled to break free and kicked out, but those arms would not let me go. I cried in frustration and tasted the saltiness of the tears on my lips.
“Shush, Alana, please… come on… calm down for me or else they are going to shock you. Hurts like a bitch. Come on, girl… shush. I got you.”
Connors’ voice sounded in my ear, and he kept shushing me until I stilled in his arms. My legs gave out, and we both went to the floor. Connors loosened his grip on me but still held me tight. My sobs became louder, and the pain in my chest was so bad that I thought I was dying. Through my sobs, I heard Connors say that I was okay and to please just give him a minute. I heard someone argue with him, and he snarled and told them to piss off. The tears soaked my top, and I felt nothing but tiredness as I shoved against Connors, needing to breathe. He did not let go.
My god, I felt so lost. I closed my eyes and screamed out the last of my frustration and anger before tiredness won out. I gave in and let the darkness pull me under.

Vanishing-Act

Author Interview

It is my pleasure to welcome Erica Kiefer, author of Vanishing Act, to Room With Books.

Hi Erica, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Please tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Well, I am a wife of ten years and a mother of three young children at home with me. My interests as an adult have stayed pretty consistent with my interests as a kid. I loved English as a student, and as an adult, writing is still enjoyable and therapeutic for me. I was an athlete in high school and held on to that identity as long as I could! I played college rugby and that was definitely the highlight of college for me. While I don’t have time to play competitive sports anymore, I still love to work out with friends or at the gym. While I enjoy nutrition and working to eat healthy, I have no problem indulging my sweet tooth!

Do you prefer fuzzy or tube socks?

I love fuzzy socks, especially during winter. Give me a good book, cup of hot chocolate, and colorful fuzzy socks on my feet, and you’ve just made my day! (Assuming that someone is also keep my three young kids occupied so I can sit back and relax!)

Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point?

I just glanced over my shoulder at the unkempt king-sized bed that is glaring back at me. Nope, most days I do not make my bed. I prefer it made! I think it makes the act of slipping into bed after a long day that much more satisfying.  But realistically, with a four-year-old, a two-year-old and a 3-month-old baby, making the bed has become low of my list of priorities!

Be honest, how often do you wash your hair?

Every three days, and my husband thinks that’s gross. It’s a regular argument we have about how for women, it’s actually not healthy to wash your hair every day – nor is it practical because of my aforementioned little children preventing me from getting ready every morning. If I spent every morning washing, drying, and styling my hair, I would get very little done but become frustrated that I’m wasting precious time by getting ready! And unfortunately, I don’t have the type of hair that can be simply washed and left alone to dry without giving the impression of Albert Einstein. (I do feel the need to clarify that I still bathe every day, just not my hair!)

Do you go out of your way to kill bugs? Are there any that make you screech and hide?

Ooh, me and bugs. No, no, no, no, no…. If they are bigger than say, a fly, then I can’t do it. Just the thought of squishing a living thing makes me squirm, and not so much because I am a bug-lover. On the contrary, I hate bugs! I have a very real phobia of cockroaches, developed from my childhood living overseas in Indonesia and Thailand, where roaches were a common pest in the house! My siblings and I laugh (and quiver in fear) when remembering how my mom would chase us around the house with a wadded up tissue, and we had to just assume she was crazy enough to be carrying around a fat, dead roach inside of it! Doors would slam, locks were bolted… and desperate cries of “let me in, let me in!” were ignored, all in the name of “every man for himself!”

What is your favorite quote?

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” ~ Plato

In college I became a Recreation Therapist, so I am inclined to believe that activities and spending time together bond people faster than a formal sit-down conversation. Not that conversation isn’t important because it absolutely is—but when people play together and share in experiences, barriers are broken down and people are more apt to open up.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

For Vanishing Act, the idea came from my days working as a recreation therapist. I loved working with at-risk youth in Utah, though I was often saddened by the family situations these teenagers came from or the tough experiences they had been through. Vanishing Act touches on kids who have been placed in abusive foster care homes, and while I do not have a specific family in mind, I did see some lack of care in some of the foster care facilities I worked at (though not even close to the fictitious drama I elaborate on in the storyline). I make a note in Vanishing Act that fortunately, I have met much more loving, compassionate people in this field than neglectful ones.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

There are a number of themes touched on in Vanishing Act, namely family, courage, and justice. But one element I hope readers pick up on is how much a person’s childhood can impact their life as an adult. All the things we experience as a child create the perspective we carry with us later in life. While a difficult childhood should not become a crutch and an excuse for misguided behavior as an adult, I think we can all understand a person better when we take the time to learn about the hardships each person has been through. That’s what I love exploring most with my characters. Why do we do the things we do? Why do we feel the way we feel about certain things? It’s fascinate and humbling trying to figure this out for my characters, as well as real people in my life.

Do you see writing as a career?

My career right now is a stay at home mom with my three young kids ( a four-year-old daughter, two-year-old son, and a 3-month-old baby boy). They are my life and career for now! However, I do enjoy writing as a hobby as much as I can. There is definitely a time and season for everything, and right now, writing one book after the other is not realistic for me. But I love keeping my foot in the door and taking my writing at a comfortable pace. Then, who knows what I might be able to accomplish down the road…

Any final thoughts?

Thank you so much for having me! I hope your followers take a look at Lingering Echoes and Rumors, which are related to my current release, Vanishing Act. I appreciate your time!

from Vanishing Act by Erica Kiefer

My vision blurred like I was walking outside in the rain. It may as well have been raining, with how emotionally drenched and defeated I felt as I marched out of my neighborhood. I didn’t know where I was going. Despite the familiar street, I felt lost and confused. I just knew I needed to keep moving, afraid that if I stood still, the storm of emotions would drown me.

Aaron became a silent companion at my side, keeping fast pace with my hurried steps. My thoughts stewed inside my head, a dangerous concoction of fear, hurt, and fury. My whole life I had worked to salvage this family. My entire purpose for going to college was to help us survive, even if our heads were barely above water. But it seemed the minute I’d left the house, both father and son were falling apart, sabotaging my efforts.

Aaron seemed to sense I was about to boil over because he eventually took my hand and pulled me onto the grass. He stood in front of me with both hands on my shoulders, trying to look into my eyes. I shook my head, knowing if I spoke one word that too many more would spew out of my mouth—bitter and resentful—and I’d never be able to take them back. Aaron’s hands moved to my back and he wrapped me in his arms, pulling my face against his chest. His strong hands pressed into my shoulder blades, holding me together like fractured porcelain.

I let the warm tears fall, one by one. I hoped that by keeping my eyes pulled tightly shut, that the tears wouldn’t find an exit. But they did—streaming one after the other until each droplet became a river, a driving current of emotion merging together. It would have felt dangerous without Aaron’s embrace, but I felt safe anchored in his arms.

from Holy and the Fallen by Amanda Strong

“Gabriel?” Eden called softly. It was late, she knew she should be sleeping, but talking about him today with her parents had left a void in her heart. Her once again, one-sided conversations were not as comforting as they used to be.

“I guess I got a bit spoiled seeing you so much,” she admitted, staring off into the distance. “You probably ran straight to the angel council and told them to fix it so I couldn’t. Was it that bad? Me seeing you?”

She felt nothing and sighed. “I know you said it made things complicated.”  Again nothing.

“Gabriel? Hey, are you there still?” She tried to push the panic down and gripped her blankets tighter.  Nothing.

Now her eyes roamed her room, darting to her floor just to make sure there were no claws coming out from under her bed. She knew she was being ridiculous. He was always there. Maybe she wasn’t focusing on the good feeling. Maybe if she just held still and stopped freaking out, she’d feel the calmness and know he was there.   Maybe…

She felt something else. A cold, draining sensation in her back. It spread down her limbs, leaving her wrist searing in pain. Eden doubled over, gripping her arm to her chest.

“Gabriel!” she gasped. She peeked down just to make sure no blood oozed out. Her flesh remained intact, pink and healthy, but her insides screamed, like her bones were being snapped in two. Pain rocketed her whole frame, shooting from two points of origin—where the demon had nearly bitten her hand off and where Oeillet’s staff had punctured her back.

She curled into a fetal position, hugging her knees, pinching her eyes shut, trying to manage the agony. When her lungs refused to fill with air, she panicked. Oh my gosh! I’m suffocating! She tried to scream for help, but nothing came out but mangled sounds. Hot pain coursed through her chest, wrapping around her heart like fingers made of fire. What’s happening! She saw no demon, no staff protruding from her heart, but it felt like one was there.

Gabriel, where are you?

“Eden!” a voice bellowed at the same time white light shot through her room. Arms wrapped around her and pulled her from her bed. A hand brushed hair from her face, clearing her vision. Bright blue eyes gazed back at her, practically buried under the furrowed brow line.

“Gabriel,” she gasped through gritted teeth.

“Eden, what’s wrong?” While holding her, his eyes scanned her body. “What’s happened to you? Where are you hurt?”

She clutched at her chest and tried to speak, but nothing came out. His eyes widened. With one swift motion, he laid her down and placed both hands on her head. Shutting his eyes, he moved his hands down her frame, lightly touching her shoulders, arms, wrist, back, and torso. He stopped where the staff had punctured her months ago. A stream of fluid words came from his mouth, none of which she understood.

“Curses,” he muttered in English. “I should’ve known.”

from Earth God by Jon Messenger

“What if there was a previous dominant species that we replaced after they screwed it up?”

Jessica arched her eyebrows.  “You’re not going to bring up the dinosaurs, are you?”

“Yes, the dinosaurs, exactly!  Think about it.  The whole world started off with Pangaea, one super continent where all the dinosaurs lived.  Then, boom, all of this sudden something happens and wipes them all out.  Scientists keep saying it was probably a meteor, but what if it wasn’t?  Think about it.  What would a meteor have done to the planet?  Set it on fire?  Filled the sky with ash to choke out most other life?  Doesn’t that sound exactly like something the Fire Elemental would do?”

“I’m impressed you know about Pangaea.  But it doesn’t change the fact that if I didn’t know you better, I’d say you were a giant stoner.”

“The Earth Elemental could have easily made Pangaea for the dinosaurs,” Sean continued as though he hadn’t heard her.  “After they screwed it up somehow, the Fire Elemental wipes them out, the Earth Elemental splits the continent, and they start over, only this time with primitive mankind.  It makes sense.”

Jessica pinched the bridge of his nose.  “I want to tell you that none of that makes sense, but we just held a conversation with an Easter Island head before Xander become the embodiment of the Earth itself.  Anything’s possible at this point.”

“Do you think they ever tried a Xander before?”

Jessica paused.  “A Xander?”

Sean glanced away from the blond and stared across the ocean.  “They must have had Warriors for each of the elements.  The fact that a Velociraptor Fire Warrior is a pretty badass mental image notwithstanding, do you think they tried this before?  Creating someone who can stop the cycle?”

“I don’t really know—“

“Because they failed,” Sean said bluntly.  He turned back toward his girlfriend.  “If they tried it, they failed because the dinosaurs were wiped out.  I just keep thinking that we’re not taking this seriously enough, and I know that’s ironic coming from me.  I keep worrying that the Fire Elemental is just sitting back laughing right now, knowing that it kicked the crap out of a Sarcosuchus Water Elemental once before and is about to do the same to Xander.”

“I think by this point we’re all taking this seriously,” Jessica said.  “Just because you’re joking doesn’t mean you’re not; we’ve known each other long enough to know it’s just your defense mechanism.”

They sat in silence, watching the lapping waves and trying not to see the lava pouring into the ocean not far away.  It was peaceful, sitting on a deserted island in the middle of the Pacific.  It was easy to ignore the fact that the world was coming to an end.  Sean mentally noted Easter Island as a place to visit, once this was all over.

Jessica chuckled softly, disrupting Sean’s musings.  He turned toward her inquisitively.  “What’s so funny?”

“Pterodactyl Wind Warriors,” she said.

For a moment, he merely arched an eyebrow before he started snickering.  Sean couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the thought.  They both laughed until their sides hurt.  It felt good just to laugh for no particular reason, to forget about the insanity of their lives for just a moment.
