Excerpt

While Annie ran the bathwater for Buffy, Jack helped by taking off her collar. Side by side, the two of them scrubbed, rinsed, and repeated as Buffy stood looking like a drowned rat.

“Oh, she’s cold. She’s shivering,” Jack said, wrapping her in a fluffy towel.

“Bring her in the bedroom. I’ll use the blow dryer on her.”

Jack held Buffy while Annie blew dry her coat. “Does she like to be brushed?” Jack asked.

“She tolerates it,” Annie said.

“This calls for a glass of wine,” Jack said, looking down at his grimy and wet clothes.

Annie poured two glasses of merlot. Motioning to her couch, she invited him to sit. “I’m sorry you got so dirty.”

“No worries. I’m glad to help. I hope she enjoys being clean,” he said.

“I’m glad we ran into each other,” Annie said, smiling.

“Well, I stopped by the bakery first and you’d already closed. I figured you were on your way home.”

“Ah, so you planned it,” Annie said as she leaned into him, hitting his shoulder.

“How about I take you out for a bite to eat?” Jack asked, taking a sip of his wine.

“Nah, let’s stay in. Do you like ramen? I lived on that stuff while I was in college and I still like it,” Annie said, getting up from the couch and crossing over to the kitchen.

Ramen made everything better, especially on a cool evening such as this. After they finished dinner, she poured their second glass of merlot, dimmed all the lights, and switched on the television. With Buffy curled up in her bed, exhausted from chewing her bone after her bath, Annie and Jack cuddled on the sofa, proud of their accomplishments.

They were laughing at the show, Funniest Home Videos, when her phone began to dance all over the glass coffee table. She quickly reached for the vibrating phone.

“We’d like to have you over for supper. Some financial papers came that we need to discuss.”

“What kind of paperwork?” Annie covered the phone and mouthed, “Grandmother” to Jack.

Jack raised his finger to his mouth, showing her he’d be closemouthed during the conversation.

“I have a very busy schedule. I’m trying to coordinate something with the Vickie and the girls and Jack.”

“Jack Powell?”

“Yes.” Annie dared her to say anything about it.

“When can we expect you?” Grandma Lilly said, not missing a beat.

Annie sighed into the receiver. “I’ll stop by tomorrow.”

“Everything okay?” Jack asked.

“Yes. I have to read over some paperwork that came in regarding my inheritance.”

“Oh.” Jack set his glass down. “Maybe I should be going, then.”

“No, you don’t need to go. Please stay.”

Jack nodded. “Alright.”

They continued to laugh at the crazy stunts on the show and soon Annie couldn’t even remember the conversation she’d had with her grandmother. After the show, Annie walked Jack to the door. “Thanks again for helping me. Giving her a bath can be such an ordeal.”

“You’re welcome. And thanks for dinner … and the wine.” He winked.

“Ramen and merlot, the dinner of champions.”

Jack reached out and gently stroked her arm. “I had a great time tonight. It was just the sort of evening I like to spend.”

“Eating ramen and drinking wine?”

“That, and …” He pulled her into his arms. “And this.” His mouth met hers in a soft kiss. She dropped her arms by her side. His sweet warm breath lingered just above her lips. He stepped back, brushing his hand through his hair.

“Hey, you can come back anytime to help me give Buffy a bath,” she said with a twinkle in her eyes.

“As long as you serve me ramen and merlot.” He gave her a quick peck and then he was gone.

Character Casting

Get to know some of the cast of Sweet Indulgence!

Annie McPherson – is slim and petite with green eyes, shy at first, often rolling over with whatever her grandmother and auntie want but gradually finds her voice and becomes a very strong character. You can see her evolve through the chapters!

Jack Powell – is tall dark and handsome, quiet and very hardworking. He knows instantly Annie is special.

Grandmother Lilly – Strong willed lives with her sister, Patty. Both of them are widowers and have plenty to say to both Annie and her sister Mary. They mean well but often overstep their authority. Think well-dressed Charleston elite, old money types.

Auntie Patty – is soft-spoken of the two elderly women. She is happy being the silent partner in this dynamic duo.

Mary McPherson – Annie’s younger sister. She’s a free-spirited type who traipsed off to Europe after she graduated from College only to bring a guy back with her. This doesn’t go over well with her grandmother. She finally settles down, but she’s always the one on edge. The one everyone invites to the party.

Danny Powell – Is Jack’s nephew. He’s a former military guy who has seen some action during conflicts and as a result, has PTSD. His character is developed more in book 2, Sweet Magnolia.

Robert and Milly Powell – Are Jack’s parents. Hardworking middle class come from a large family with both of their parent’s still alive and has small parts in all books.

Richard and Diane Powell and daughter Crystal – Are Jack’s sister and her husband and niece. Richard works for the family limousine service with Jack and Diane runs the family travel business. They don’t have big parts, but they are definitely an integral part of the Charleston Harbor Novels.

Q & A with the Author:

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Watch my mom die before my eyes as I held her hand.

Please, tell me a story. It can be long or short. From your childhood or last week. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it’s yours. What’s your story?

I was sicker than a dog a few days back. I’m pretty dramatic so I was convinced I was dying. I wasn’t, I was just sick. And I was sick and tired of being sick. My hubby of 41 years stayed home from work to help take care of me. He made me toast, hot tea and even cleaned up after I sort of made a mess. Now, that’s a man worth keeping and might make a good book boyfriend, what do you think? Lol.

Snippet for A Design For Love

by Madge Gressley

Interesting, Jason thought as a half-grin formed on his handsome face, admiring Maddy’s petite form hurrying down the hall and disappearing into her office. She had intrigued him ever since he had been introduced to her. There had been something about her from the start that peeked his curiosity. Maybe it was the fact that she was the lone female in a male dominated arena of architects and seemed completely oblivious to all that testosterone, or maybe it was the remarks he had accidently overheard from several of the younger architects commenting that she was a ‘cold fish.’ One young buck had laughed and said, ‘Bet it would be like taking an iceburg to bed. You might wind up with frostbite.’

SNIPPET

They watched some love story, and they chatted in between scenes over pizza and wine. Seemed neither one was truly interested in the movie. They cuddled on the couch, and in between bites of pizza, they kissed. When the movie was over, he helped clean up the crumbs they’d made and rinsed the glasses out in the sink. He wanted to show her that he too could be a good guest.

They stood inside the kitchen with locked gazes, making for an uncomfortable setting. Gabe wasn’t sure what he should do. He glanced at his watch. When he looked up, Rose was making her way toward him. “Can you stay the night?” she asked.

Excerpt

I remember clearly the day I interviewed for the job. Charles, the owner, asked the standard questions; how many words per minute I could type, if I could take shorthand, and what other skills I had. He then started to tell me a little bit about the job. I couldn’t help but focus on his eyes. He had the prettiest blue-gray eyes I’d ever seen on a man.

In the beginning, I mostly answered the phone, made appointments for Charles, and looked after his calendar. I found his line of work interesting.  He paid more than the job at the insurance company, which is what interested me first.

Women dressed in high priced clothing would come in and from behind closed doors I could hear them ranting and raving their suspicions of their husbands cheating on them. They would hire Charles to get to the bottom of it.

Of course, women weren’t the only suspicious creatures. We had plenty of men come in and hire Charles to follow their wives around to see what they’d been up to all day while they were at work.

Snippet

As she drove home, all Vanessa could think about was her lovely day with Jason, and the excitement of what was to come. She couldn’t
help but think of his vibrant smile, his dark mysterious eyes, and his natural athletic build.
He seemed as if he’d be better suited for a construction job or something similar. She pictured him in a hardhat, jeans, T-shirt, and work boots.  She sighed.
However, what she would have a hard time forgetting was the kiss.

Day 6
14 Days of Romance Valentine’s Day Book Blitz Event

We are so excited to let you get to know Debbie a little bit today!

Debbie currently resides in beautiful Sonoma County, California, where the jagged Pacific coastline meets the rolling hills cascading with vineyards. She writes romance novellas that feature strong, independent women, who when faced with adversity, or tragedy, fine strength and overcome the perils that stand in their way. She’s an avid supporter of animal rescue, and happily donates a portion of sales from her books to rescue organizations. She has two adult children, and two granddaughters. In her spare time, she loves to garden, travel; enjoy family, and her beloved rescue dogs, Dash and Briar. Her real passion of course is writing, and she uses her 20+ years as a military wife as inspiration for her stories. The Salty Dog is her second endeavor, and takes places in Bodega, a small fishing community she has the pleasure of visiting often. Her current release – Passport to Happiness is about a small town girl who travels to foreign places, another area she has experience.

I don’t know about you but this cover makes me want to travel. Let’s take a look inside this fantastic cover.

To escape the often lonely and boring reality of living in a small rural town, Jessica finds comfort in reading about the many places that exist beyond her small corner of the earth.

When she joins the State Department and travels abroad looking for adventure, Jessica gets more than she imagined was ever possible.

Passport to Happiness is a story of strength and determination while exploring new places, but it’s also about finding love and happiness – no matter where you hang your hat.
