Book Blurb

In the final year of her business degree, Phuong has her future all mapped out. Finish studying, then go home and save her family’s business. Until her father dies and it all falls apart. Broke and jobless, she stumbles on a solution: find herself an Australian husband. Fast.

She’s not looking for love – Phuong doesn’t believe in fairy tales. Her marriage will be a business deal, pure and simple. But when she meets her husband-to-be and discovers he’s a reclusive rock star living at Romance Island Resort, maybe it’s time to believe a girl can live happily ever after.

excerpt

Jason didn’t wait for the rotors to stop before he leaped out of the helicopter door and sprinted for the hotel entrance.

“Welcome to Romance Island Resort, sir. Enjoy your stay!” came the pilot’s voice behind him, but Jason wasn’t listening.

He burst through the door and skidded to a stop in front of the Reception desk. “Where’s Audra?” Jason demanded. She was the only girl who could make him forget Angel. The only girl who could make this right. He needed her. Now.

The blonde girl at Reception stared at him. “We don’t have anyone named Audra here, sir.”

“Of course you do. Best maid I ever met. Tell her I’m here, and to meet me at my accommodation. I had Villa Maxima last time. The one with the huge spa tub in the bathroom. And make sure we have plenty of mango beer. Mangoes are her favourite.”

A second girl sidled behind the Reception desk next to the blonde. She looked Japanese, but her accent had Aussie overtones as she asked, “Did you say Audra? She was mad about mangoes. I bet Audra’s missing those now she’s in Antarctica.”

Jason laughed. “Antarctica? Don’t be ridiculous.” He turned his eyes back to the blonde. “Can you let her know I’m here?”

She looked lost until her eyes fixed on someone behind Jason. “Oh, Mr Meier, this man’s looking for Audra. He doesn’t believe that she’s gone.”

An older man with a professional smile held out his hand. “Good morning, Mr ah – “

“Felix. Jason Felix.” Jason’s firm handshake almost crushed the other man’s fingers in his eagerness. “Where’s Audra?”

“Like Hana said, she’s in Antarctica, Mr Felix. Audra no longer works here.”

Jason’s heart plummeted. No Caitlin, no Audra…what was a rock star supposed to do.

Book Blurb

A maid at the exclusive Romance Island Resort, Audra knows how to handle rock stars, billionaires and celebrities. She keeps their secrets, cleans up their mess and makes sure their holiday is a memorable one. There’s just one rule: no relationships with guests.

And Audra never breaks the rules.

Jay Felix is rock royalty and he knows it. When one of his bandmates threatens to break up the band, he goes into hiding at the Romance Island Resort. Looking for a distraction, he sets his sights on the unattainable Audra. But what’s a rock star to do when the girl he wants is the one woman he can’t have?

Welcome to paradise, where the romance is as hot as the weather and the tides aren’t the only thing surging under the surface.

excerpt

She reached the door and paused to take a deep breath. Patience, calm and don’t kill the VIP, she told herself. Then she rapped on the frosted glass door. “Maid service, Mr Felix.”

“It’s open.”

It wasn’t, so she swiped her wristband, waiting for the intercom to beep as it had earlier.

The door hissed open. Audra swallowed her surprise and strode inside. She should be used to automatic doors by now.

“In here.”

Audra followed the sound of his voice to the theatre room, where he lay sprawled across the modular sofa in his black boxer briefs and nothing else. He reached down to scratch his sizeable, cotton-clad bulge.

Clearing her throat, Audra began, “Reception said you were having trouble with the TV?” She crossed the floor so she could focus on the screen and not the chiselled man tempting her like a bar of the best chocolate. The dickhead had a body that rivalled Serge’s. Speaking of Serge… “If you like, I’ll arrange to get a repair crew from Engineering out here. I could arrange some other activity for you in the meantime. Perhaps book you a session with the personal trainer in the gym…” She squinted at the screen. The picture seemed to be just fine, if a bit blurred. It took her a moment to realise what she was seeing projected across the wall. Then she didn’t know where to look. “I take it you don’t want to watch the adult movie channel?” Audra enquired, trying to keep a straight face. She’d heard every excuse in the book for why hotel guests had accidentally accessed the channel. She wondered if he’d have a new one.

Jay laughed. “Babe, I’m a rock star. Porn goes with the territory. I don’t usually watch it alone, is all.”

“Ah.” She really didn’t know what to say. Had he called her to come and watch adult movies with him? She heartily hoped that wasn’t included in her job description.

“Nah, it’s this awesome blowjob the chick did. Here, check it out.” To Audra’s horror, he flipped the movie back to a different scene and made it play. Her mouth dropped open as she watched the male porn star’s genitals disappear down his co-star’s throat, while he grinned beneath his moustache and made a lot of noise to express his evident pleasure. An excruciatingly long moment later, Jay paused the film on an extreme close-up of the action. “There. Can you do that?”

“No.” In fact, Audra didn’t think any normal woman could.

“Aw, c’mon, babe. For me. Give it a shot.” His boxer briefs landed on the floor beside her foot.

Audra took a deep breath, forcing her eyes to face forward and under no circumstances glance at the hot, naked rock star on the couch behind her. If she did, she knew she wouldn’t be able to resist him.

“Mr Felix.”

“Babe, once you’ve sucked my cock, you can call me Jay.”

Thank you, coarse-tongued creep for breaking the spell. Two more deep breaths and she managed to find the strength to refuse. “Mr Felix, I think you’ve confused maid service with the services of a prostitute. My job description doesn’t include sexual favours. I can contact Reception and ask them to arrange transport for you to the brothel in town, where you can – ”

“Babe, I’m a fucking rock star. I don’t need to pay for sex. I have chicks lining up to suck my dick. Fuck, they’d pay me for it.”

Reluctantly, Audra turned to face the arrogant prick. She held his gaze, not trusting herself to look anywhere else. “Please don’t swear at me, Mr Felix. And I hate to tell you this, but there isn’t anyone waiting outside. Perhaps your adoring fans aren’t aware that you’re here. If there were such a queue, I’d be able to escort the first lady in line inside to see to your…needs.” She heard the distaste in her voice and changed the subject. “So can I report to Reception that your TV is now working fine and get back to my other duties?”

His eyebrows scrunched up so they almost met across his red nose. In fact, his whole face had turned red. “I just want you to suck my dick while I watch porn. What do I have to do to get a blowjob?”

“I don’t know, Mr Felix. All I do know is that it’s not my job. Perhaps I can ask Reception to call the brothel to send an expert over?”

“I don’t need to pay for sex!” he bellowed. “Is that what you’re after? Money? Fine. How much does it take for a man to get a blowjob from you?” He reached for his wallet and pulled out a wad of bills.

“I’m sorry, Mr Felix.” She wasn’t, but it sounded civil to say so. “It would take flying pigs, a cold day in hell and the sun to rise in the west, and I still wouldn’t do it. Because I’d lose my job.” She forced herself to smile. “I hope you have a pleasant evening.” Audra turned her back and strode toward the front door. How fate could grant an arsehole like him a body so perfect…nothing in life was fair.

“You expect me to deal with this hard-on by myself?” His voice shifted up an octave.

Audra thought she heard a note of desperation. Good. Maybe it was time life evened up the score a bit. For all the nights she’d lusted after him and never been properly satisfied.

“You have two hands, Mr Felix. I understand that’s all a lonely single man needs.” She clamped her lips together and forced herself to remain calm until the door closed behind her. She blinked in the late afternoon sunlight, feeling like she’d been inside a surreal film and the real world was definitely a relief. Sunset tinted the path as she followed the yellow brick road away from the rock star the newspapers called the Wizard of Aus.

Once she’d rounded the corner and Villa Maxima vanished from sight, she broke into a sprint for the main building. She had to get to Dennis before the dickhead called security to get her fired. Or before she turned around and did something she’d really regret.

About the Book

Five years ago, Nathan’s world came crashing down. The witness protection program stole the woman he loved and now he’s lost everything – including hope that she’s still alive. His security job is a daily reminder of the girl he failed to protect, dragging him deeper into despair.

Forced to assume the identity of a dead girl, Caitlin struggles to rise from the ruins of the life she lost. A career change summons her home, but Perth isn’t the safe haven it seems. Someone is hunting her – one of her kidnappers, a long-lost relative or another terrorist with an axe to grind?

When nightmares from their past threaten to engulf Nathan and Caitlin, can a broken hero and a girl living another woman’s afterlife finally fight their way free?

A tiny taste of what’s in store:

“I know something you won’t miss about Melbourne,” Jo said as she peered through the window.

The packing tape made a tortured sound as I used it to seal another box. “What? The ever-changing weather?” I scrawled BOOKS across the top of the box with my marker, then decided to label the sides, too.

“No. The commute to uni. Squeezed into a packed train carriage with all those crazed commuters, forcing yourself not to freak out at the sheer number of strangers touching you…I’ve seen your face on the train. It’s like you’re trying not to scream.”

I smiled wanly. Trying not to stab someone, actually. Five years and my skin still crawled if anyone touched me. Maybe I should have become a nun, not a doctor. No, I wouldn’t be allowed to carry a knife everywhere if I were a nun. Plus, there was the matter of having killed people…”I’ll be able to walk to work now. I told you that apartment next to the hospital was a good investment.”

She stuck her tongue out. “I’m an accountant, not an investment adviser. But I still think you should’ve rented it out this year, before you moved in. Six months’ rent is a lot of money to throw away…”

It wasn’t about the money. It was about having my own space, brand new, that no one else had lived in or done things in. A place without a past so I could create my own future there. Of course I picked Perth. After so much time away, I wanted to go home. With a new name, a new career and a whole new life…but it was home. Someone else’s afterlife…haunting the place where I’d nearly died. It was fitting.

Every time I looked at St Elsie’s Hospital next door, I’d remember my time there as a patient and hopefully have more sympathy for my patients. Or go to pieces and be admitted to the psychiatric ward.

No, I told myself. I was prepared to go back and face any demons that I hadn’t slaughtered in the past. Given they were probably on their last legs after their last encounter with me, it’d be an act of mercy to put them out of their misery. Euthanasia, even, though that wasn’t legal in Western Australia.

A blurry hand waved before my eyes. “Hello? Are you even listening to me?”

I shook my head. “Sorry, Jo. I should have been.”

“I hope you introduce me to him soon, because any man who can make you daydream that deeply has to be drool-worthy. I want to know his name, his bank balance and how many times in a night.”

Nightmares Trilogy:

This is the final book in the Nightmares Trilogy, which includes:
• Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer (#1))
• Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller (#2)
• Afterlife of Alanna Miller (#3)

Excerpt

“Seriously, what the hell is this, mate?”

Navid swallowed his huge mouthful of pie. “What do you mean?”

“This!” I shook the letter at him. “Is ASIO trying to buy my silence or what?”

Navid took the letter, held it at arm’s length and squinted at it. Looked like he needed reading glasses. Was he really getting that old? He passed the paper back to me. “It’s not a bad sum for not telling a story you’re not going to talk about anyway. I’d take it and book a nice holiday with it, if I were single like you. You could spend a month touring in the US or Europe for that, including flights.”

“But I can’t take a holiday if you need me as a witness in the inquiry. Have they finally set a date yet? It’s weird, getting offered money for silence before the hearings. Is this because there’ll be press coverage on the inquiry into that bastard Mott? And they want to make sure we won’t talk to the press?”

Navid stared at something in the distance. “No, no one’s set a date for the inquiry.”

“So why now?” I persisted. “Why are they throwing money at me? It’s Caitlin they have to worry about, and this is nowhere near as much money as the TV stations or magazines offer. I don’t see her agreeing to take ten grand to keep quiet. Not when she can get a hundred times that for an exclusive.”

Navid coughed. “I think they’ll be offering her a lot more than that. After all, she’s the one who almost died.”

“So it’s not just hush money? It’s compensation for damages suffered and…all the other shit it says in the letter? What about my sister? What about Alanna? Did she get a posthumous payout, too? And a hypocritical letter saying the department deeply regrets her kidnapping, rape, torture and death, but here’s some money to make it feel better? Shit, if Caitlin’s letter says that, expect fireworks.” My heart ached at just the sound of her name. I’d give anything to see her explode. I’d know she was alive and okay, wherever she was.

He lowered his voice. “If they can find her. There’s a rumour in the department that all the documents in her file are gone. Papers, digital, recordings of statements…everything, just gone. And the details of her witness protection arrangements, too, so that means she’s disappeared.”

I stared at him in shock, silence money forgotten. “You don’t know where she is? She could be dead or hurt or God knows what! You have to find her! She’ll need to give evidence at the inquiry, too. I mean, she nearly died because of him.” And I’d get to see her if she came for the inquiry, even if I had to camp outside the building. I’d know she was alive and okay, even if only for a moment. “Ask him where she is. He’ll know.”

“She was never going to be part of the inquiry. She didn’t have any contact with him beforehand and her statements will be enough, or they would have been, if we could find them. Now, I don’t even know if there’ll be an inquiry at all.” He sighed and lobbed his empty pie bag into the nearest bin.

I stopped dead. “What do you mean, no inquiry? I get paid off to shut up while that dickhead gets off scot-free? Fuck that.”

Navid sighed. “The justice system isn’t geared toward punishing dead people.”

“Yeah, which leaves Mott, seeing as everyone else is dead. Wait, hang on…are you saying he’s dead, too?” My mouth hung open. “Who killed him? Whoever did it’s a legend and I owe him a carton of beer. I’ve wanted to do it for years!”

Navid coughed out a laugh. “Then you owe Mott a carton of beer, because the official report says he killed himself. With an ornamental dagger, no less.Bit melodramatic, if you ask me.”

I found myself shaking my head. “That can’t be right. Mott was a mean bastard. He’d never do the world a favour and off himself. And if he did, he’d take people with him, or at least set someone up for his murder, so he could laugh all the way to hell. Who do you suspect?”

Navid shrugged. “Well, how many people hated him? It could be anyone.”

Caitlin was good with a knife, I thought idly, not willing to believe it was her. If anyone deserved to be on the point of her blade, it was him. His negligence…his indifference to what she might suffer had almost gotten her killed.

“Look, I got to get back to work. They’ve got Michael and me looking for her. One girl in twenty million people, if she’s even still in the country. The guys in Canberra want this whole affair over and done with as quickly as possible, so we got pulled off other projects to look for a girl who doesn’t want to be found.” He laughed, but sobered quickly. “Hey, she never mentioned anything to you, did she? About where she was headed, or the new name she’d be using? I remember the day Mott told her about the arrangements. She was really pissed off about them. Wish I’d asked her then.”

I shook my head. “If she’d told me anything, I’d have given in and started hunting for her long before now. I’d change my name and go into hiding, too, if I had to.” His words started to sink in. “Hang on. She never met Mott. He visited her in hospital when she was unconscious, but never afterwards. I’d never have let that bastard anywhere near her!”

He wouldn’t meet my eyes. “She spoke to me privately when you weren’t around, requesting a meeting with your superior. I made the arrangements and I drove her to the office and home again for both meetings. She spotted some inconsistencies in what he said, and told me she suspected he was corrupt. I dismissed it at first, figuring she was just a teenage kid with on overactive imagination, but some of the things she said rang some pretty loud alarm bells. Then I started to see him make mistakes, too. It took me four years to get enough evidence together to warrant an enquiry, and now he’s dead, so we’ll never know why he did it, or what else he knew.” He laughed quietly. “I wonder if she knew. I’d love to ask her now.”

I hesitated, then ploughed ahead anyway. “If you find her, can you tell me? I just want to know that she’s okay. It’s killing me, not knowing.”

He shook his head and wouldn’t meet my eyes. “Nathan, you know I can’t do that. She’s in witness protection for a reason, even if the official five years are up and she can let up on the secrecy now. She’s not the sort to go splashing her photo on every social media channel she can find just because she can.” He inhaled sharply, considering. “I’ll tell you what. If we do find her and I get a chance to speak to her, I’ll tell her that you wanted to know she was okay, and that you’d love to talk to her, but only if that’s what she wants. It’s not like you offered to go into hiding with her.”

“I would have if she’d asked me, or even wanted me,” I whispered, more to myself than to him.

Excerpt

“Great, we’ll see you in Hell at nine on Monday morning!”

How can an angel survive in a corporate Hell?

Mel accepted a job in the Health, Environment, Life and Lands Corporation – otherwise known as HELL.

Dying for a decent coffee, surrounded by bureaucracy gone mad and demons who just love making life difficult, Mel must find out what Lucifer and his minions are really up to – before his Corporation goes global. Mel’s no ordinary angel, but she’s never dealt with demons before.

Could the seductive CEO really be Lucifer himself? Are Luce’s lusty looks all they seem, or is he after more than Mel’s body? Does he have a hope in Hell with her, anyway?

He’s about to find out that this sweet angel’s soul is not for sale.

A tiny taste of what’s in store:

“Do you know how long you’ve made me wait?” Luce lifted his chin. “Close the door.”

Mel turned and kicked the door shut with the sole of one shoe. The click of it closing coincided with her eyes meeting Luce’s once more.

“Now strip and get your arse on the desk,” Luce instructed.

Mel stared at him. He couldn’t be serious, could he?

“Every other girl in this building knows how to do as she’s told. Do you know how many girls I’ve had on this desk? You should consider yourself lucky. The last one I had in here was so quick getting undressed that I managed to give her a full fifteen minutes of my time. At this rate, you’ll be lucky to have five.”

Mel became transfixed by the timber desktop. “Did you wipe it clean afterwards?”

“What?” Luce’s face reddened.

“Did you wipe it clean afterwards?” Mel repeated patiently. “I mean, you work on it every day. Imagine how many diseases and strange germs each of your, er, accommodating staff members were carrying when they placed their bare behinds on your desk.”

The shock on Luce’s face was priceless. He edged his chair away from the suddenly suspicious surface.

Carlton, Demelza: Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller, Nightmares Trilogy Book 2

Necessary Evil

of Nathan Miller

by Demelza Carlton

500 3D-1

Evil should never be necessary.

Except when it is.

“And now in breaking news, Caitlin Lockyer has been found. In the early hours of this morning, a man discovered her body dumped on a south-west beach. A police spokesperson would not confirm whether the girl known as the Absent Angel is alive or dead…”

They called her an angel. No one thought to ask what kind.

Burning for retribution, now she’ll stop at nothing.

Can it truly be evil when it feels so good?

500 3D-3

A tiny taste of what’s in store:

Don’t get into cars with strangers.

So stupid to think I was strong enough to resist.

But I never dreamed it would happen to me.

I tried to back away, but the b**** behind me didn’t let me. She hit my diaphragm with the heel of her hand, forcing my breath out in a huff. Unable to breathe, the street stood still in my mind as I stared around, desperately hoping for someone to see – someone who’d help me. Did eyes meet mine? Did I imagine understanding? If it was, it came too late. The burning flare that was my need to breathe exploded and she shoved me into the car. I fell on flesh encased in fabric as I gasped for breath, a flailing fish in the pervert’s lap as I lay across the back seat. I dimly heard the doors and windows shut. The motor hummed as the car accelerated away – before I had enough air to scream.

Review:

A novel filled with “Oh My God” and nail-biting moments. It left me breathless! Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller works as a stand-alone novel, but I have to read Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer before I can give a full accounting of my thoughts and feelings about Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller.

I hope you stay tuned for the complete review of both books of Demelza Carlton’s Nightmares Trilogy.

I highly recommend Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller.

Carlton, Demelza: Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer

Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer Book Blitz Banner

Synopsis
There are real monsters out there. The worst part is that they’re human.

They took her away from me.

I mumbled a protest through the haze of pain and exhaustion that had turned me into little more than a zombie. I’ll never be able to watch a zombie movie again without remembering this night, I thought.

“It’s all right – we have to move her to take care of her. She’s hurt worse than you,” I was told. “We need to treat you, too. There’s a gunshot wound in your shoulder.”

One of the hospital staff looked grim and came over. She started firing questions at me.

“Name?”

“Nathan Miller.”

“What happened?”

“I was shot.”

“By whom?”

“A homicidal lunatic with a gun and bad aim.”

“Her name?”

“Caitlin Lockyer.”

“What happened to her?”

“Looks like someone tried to kill her.”

Nathan found Caitlin on a beach covered in blood. Saving her life was just the start. Now he’s the prime suspect and he has to find out who’s really responsible. Both of their lives depend on it.

Who hurt her?

Why was he shot?

What did he promise?

Why doesn’t his story add up?

Who was the dead man on the beach?

What will she remember when she wakes up?

A tiny taste of what’s in store:

“Stay away from her, Nathan. That girl isn’t good for you.”

Stay away from her? I’d go crazy with worry in a day. “You don’t know her.”

Chris looked grim. “Neither do you. Is there anything you wouldn’t do for her?”

“Yes,” I snapped.  “I wouldn’t die for her.”

Chris turned around to stare at me, her mouth hanging open.

“Do you want to know why?” I asked steadily. “I wouldn’t die for her because I wouldn’t be able to protect her any more. What if I missed one of the people who hurt her? I couldn’t take that risk. She’s too important.”

Nightmares Trilogy

Dark, disturbing and definitely scary – Nightmares of Caitlin Lockyer is the first book in Demelza Carlton’s Nightmares Trilogy. The second book is Necessary Evil of Nathan Miller.

Excerpt

He caught me staring. “Have you never seen a man with hair on his chest before?” he asked testily.

I didn’t know what to say. “Not the colour of fire, no,” I said finally.

He relented. “Back home in Ireland, it’s supposed to be good luck to rub a man’s red hair, like a leprechaun.” He saw my confusion. “A sort of mythical creature.” He took a step closer to me, still shirtless. “Go on.”

I was reluctant to touch the man at all, let alone his strange chest hair, but the hope of better luck for the future got the better of me. Besides, I felt I might offend him if I spurned his offer.

I stretched a hand out, lightly stroking the wiry orange hair trailing down his stomach. He pulled away, doubling over. I drew my hand back.

“That tickles,” he apologised. His expression turned to a broad smile. “Now, your turn.”

It took me a moment to understand what he meant. “But I don’t have any chest hair and it wouldn’t be red, even if I did.”

His smile turned cheeky as he continued. “No chest hair? You expect me to believe that? You must have some insulation, not to have frozen solid in the wind out on the boat today.”

I shook my head. “None. Even if I did, it would be too fair to bring you any luck.”

I looked away and refilled our whiskey glasses so I didn’t have to look at him. I gulped the contents of mine down as quickly as I could.

“Go on.” His eyes held a challenge. He turned his back to me and picked up the poker, shifting the logs in the fire to burn better.

The man was a doctor. How many chests had he seen in the course of his profession? What was one more? I shrugged and pulled my t-shirt off. My frozen fingers had been too cold to fasten a bra earlier in the day, so my chest was now as bare as his.

“Holy Mary, Mother of God!” His eyes were as round as two puffed-up blowfish.

The poker clattered to the hearth.
