Visiting the Sins

About the Book

Set in the Bible Belt of Deep East Texas, Visiting the Sins is a darkly funny story about mothers and daughters, naked ambition, elusive redemption, and all the torment it’s possible to inflict in the name of family.

Down through the decades, the lofty social aspirations of the feisty but perennially dissatisfied Wheeler women — Pokey, the love-starved, pistol-packing matriarch; Rebanelle, the frosty former beauty queen turned church organist; and Curtis Jean, the backsliding gospel singer — are exceeded only by their unfortunate taste in men and a seemingly boundless capacity for holding grudges. A legacy of feuding and scandal lurches from one generation to the next with tragic consequences that threaten to destroy everything the Wheeler women have sacrificed their souls to build.

Book Review

I am an independent reviewer and it is my pleasure to read and review Visiting the Sins by Melanie Denman. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What an incredible undertaking in writing Visiting the Sins must have been for Melanie Denman. I know it was an extraordinary feat to read and review it. It elicited an number of emotions from hilarity to sadness and more than a bit of nostalgia and the feeling that at times she was writing something about my life.

Visiting the Sins takes us into the turmoil of one Texas family from the standpoint of four women, from one generation to the next and from the POV of young woman, adult, and elder and how their actions affect the family and each other. It is a close look at motherhood and how actions have consequences.

I spent a great amount of the early parts of the book laughing out loud and regaling my husband with the passages that were tickling my funny bone. Ms. Denman created a family filled with characters that were humorous and I could relate to personally. From Pokey, to Mama, to Curtis Jean, I could find myself somewhere in each of them and some of their peculiarities.

Visiting the Sins is a great book to read, but somewhat slow toward the end. I guess Pokey was  my favorite of the bunch and thus as she slowed down due to age, so did the book. Her escapades are the stuff of legends!

I still recommend you take the time to read it, find the humor in it and I commend Ms. Denman for her writing. I am looking forward to her next great publication.

I give Visit the Sins by Melanie Denman four steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee.

Book Review

It is my pleasure to provide a review of KIDNAP: Book 1 of the Guy Erma and the Some of Empire Series.

I have to sing praises for this fantastic cover. This is actually what attracted me to the book. I’ve often said, and heard by many others, that without an eye-catching cover, you could have written the next New York Time’s best-seller, but it very well could go unnoticed.

I opened KIDNAP and was immediately dropped in to the apparent battle for Mezzatorra and the loss of the poison pills. By the end of the Prologue, I was vowing revenge on Captain Karl’s behalf. I was in for the long haul. The action is very immediate and the story moves very fluidly and I am very glad to hear that this is only book one of three.

I felt an immediate draw to Teodor. I realize birth brings many privileges, but he seemed to be in the hands of puppets. I was feeling quite sorry for Guy for his desire to join the Dome Elite since I saw from the beginning that his dreams would bring him to the dark underworld of the Freyne, something for which he is ill prepared.

Ms. Melia has a great aptitude for writing Sci-Fi and this is a very appealing book that should be well received by a younger YA audience.

I definitely recommend KIDNAP by Sally Ann Melia and give four steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee to KIDNAP.

Do You Have the Courage to Be You?

By Jenny Williamson

Do You Have The Courage to be You

About the Book

Before time began, you were imagined, planned, and created for a specific and unique purpose. There is something you were created to do and if you don’t do it, it will never be done. It is urgent that you find the courage to be and do all you were created for. Someone is waiting for you to be you. Have you ever contemplated your particular purpose – the reason you are on this planet? Have you intentionally pursued your true identity and attempted to fulfill your destiny? Do You Have The Courage To Be You? If you answered “No” to any of these questions, but want to answer “Yes,” then life coach, Jenny Williamson, will help you to do just that through the pages of this book.

Do You Have The Courage To Be You? was the provocative question that changed the entire trajectory of Jenny’s life, and became the impetus used to propel her on a journey of discovering her water-walking, giant-slaying, history-making destiny. She prays it will do the same for you. As Jenny neared her fortieth birthday, she felt pitifully ordinary, was mired in mediocrity, and cloaked in comfort. She knew courage would be required for her to leave the known for the unknown.

What does it mean to have the courage to be you? What thought patterns or belief systems keep you from being you? What challenges must be faced? How do you find your unique purpose? Within this powerful book, Jenny answers these questions, while transparently sharing her own story. Her journey led her to a vulnerable group of children – children who are being sold for sex – who needed a home and a family.

Q&A with the Author

Why did you write a book?

I began speaking from a stage about ten years ago this message of courage and purpose. Every time I would finish speaking, people would beg me for a book – a vehicle to take the message home with them. I love speaking, but writing is difficult for me so I put it off for years. But in my heart I kept hearing “write the book”. I even opened a fortune cookie one day that said “write the book”!

What is your favorite quote?

“Every man and woman is put on this earth to do something unique, and if they don’t do it, it shan’t get done.” Dr. Benjamin Mays – he was the son of slaves. If find that fascinating that a son of slaves was instilled with the concept of destiny. I am daily motivated by the fact that I have something unique to do that is for me alone and that someone may be waiting for me to have the courage to be me.

I see that 50% of the proceeds of your book goes to rescuing children from sex trafficking. Is that for children overseas?

Well, yes and no. I founded an organization called Courage Worldwide. We build homes for children who have been trafficked for sex here in the U.S. and in foreign countries. Currently, we have two homes open – one in Africa and one in the U.S. – so half the proceeds of the book are donated to that non-profit – Courage Worldwide.

Is sex trafficking really happening here in the U.S.?

Yes, our children are being sold for sex. When I heard it was happening in faraway places my heart – my mother’s heart was broken – but when I learned it was happening in the U.S. and in my own backyard, I got angry and vowed to do something – so I did.

Was it that simple?

No! Had I not gone on the journey of discovering my true identity and destiny, which I write about in my book, I would have never believed that I could do something that could make an impact in this world. Before I could even entertain something of that magnitude, I had the answer the question – the question that is the title of my book – do you have the courage to be you? I had to believe that I was created on purpose for a unique purpose before I would have the courage to attempt to change the world of these children.
