Top Ten List:

Top Ten People I would like to meet.
1. J.R.R. Tolkien. I mean, who wouldn’t want to meet the “father” of fantasy?
2. J.K. Rowling. If she can make it with an oddball fantasy series, surely I can too, and I’d love to pick her brain about that.
3. Joan of Ark – I think her life story is just fascinating.
4. C.S. Lewis – He was an amazing writer. Can’t imagine what life would be like without Narnia.
5. Robin McKinley – She’s always been one of my fave fantasy authors. I have a few bones to pick though, about hinted stories that never got written.
6. Mark Twain – He seems like he’d have been a great guy to know.
7. Albert Einstein – Would love to meet the man who contributed so much to how we see the world.
8. King Charlemagne – An ancestor on both sides of the family, I understand he was one of the first people to instigate a public education system for his people. That, and he had some really cool things happen in his life.
9. Harrison Ford – He’s one of my fave actors of all time. He’s just awesome.
10. Danny Kaye – Another childhood favorite actor, I think Danny and I would have gotten along swimmingly. That, and the fact that he sang like a dream, even though he couldn’t read a note of music.

Q&A with the Author

  1. If you had 3 wishes, what would they be?
    A. More people to read my books, because I think they have a good message a lot of people need in this day and age.
    B. A life-time supply of Hershey’s Mint chocolate Chip cookie candy bars. They are the best!
    C. To actually own a house with enough space for all the kids I hope to have, along with a library/work area for me, a craft room, and a den/man cave for my hubby.
  2. Where do you write?
I typically write at my computer, which is currently in what should be the dining room but is more like my office. If not there, I write in a notebook wherever the mood hits me.
  3. How long does it normally take you to write a novel?
It depends on how cooperative my characters are, how many distractions I have going on, and how stressed I am. But I can usually get a rough draft for a novel-length book in about six months, though this is basing off of me having a full-time job on top of everything else.
  4. What are your inspirations?
My inspirations are probably a combination of authors who have come before me, such as J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. But I think my recently departed grandfather, on my dad’s side, is a great inspiration for reaching for your dreams.
  5. What was the hardest part of writing your book, and how did you overcome it?
The hardest part was finding the time to write. I worked full time when writing this so it was hard to balance that with being tired after work and wanting to write.
  6. What is your writing drive? The power that keeps you going when your writing gets difficult?
The drive, for me, is that I promised myself I’d do this. That and my husband likes it when I read him my stuff and he’s always asking if there’s more to read yet, so that helps a lot.

Walter looked between the two, watching the invisible sparks fly. Leslie was a force to be reckoned with, but she was no match for Tyler. “You know,” he commented, “I would pay to watch you and Anwen have a go at each other.”

Anwen gave him a dirty look. “Really? What happened to being my friend? I thought you were on my side.”

The veteran shrugged, aware that the others had turned their attention to him as well. “Oh I am. I just think it would be interesting to watch. In fact, I’d pay good money for that opportunity. You’re not going to improve unless you can go against someone who’ll test your skills. Why not her?” He pointed his thumb at the Walker.

“Are you kidding me?” Anwen balked. “She’d make mincemeat of me! Even Courtney’s better at this whole mage thing than I am! And you want me to go up against the best person in this place? Are you insane?”

Walter only smiled as he folded his arms across his chest as he made himself comfortable. “You want to learn your craft? I can’t think of any better way. Margo would say the same thing. You know she would.”

Anwen shook her head. “Can you please leave my mother out of this? We all know she was an overachiever who pushed everyone to their limits. I really don’t need this right now.”

Anwen moved to stand, arms down at her sides as she stared ahead, ignoring his reaching hand. “I can see the trees,” she continued. “And the particles that make them. They’re the same. The same as the ones that make up you and me. Like small planets circling miniature suns. I can see the smallest details.” Her eyes widened in awe. “It’s beautiful.”

Tyler stepped forward to stand beside her. Sometimes the plant had allowed such vision, but the cost was usually high. More than a handful with similar sight had gone blind from the experience. That was why it was better for mortals to “hear” everything rather than see it. He only hoped there would be no such resulting repercussions in this instance.

Concentrating, Tyler tried to reach out to the part of his soul that resided within hers. His soul gaze was met with an aura of brilliant golden light, entwined with hints of red and blue. Silver flashed throughout, like a protective cage made of lightning. It seemed to dare anyone to try and displace it.

Anwen turned towards Tyler. The morning sunlight glinted off her auburn hair like little sparks of fire. She closed her eyes and leaned into him, her lips meeting his. Both their hearts thumped like drums in perfect harmony. Despite that, Tyler stood frozen in shock. The kiss was brief but oh so sweet as she pulled away. “You taste like summer,” she observed with a wistful sigh.

Tyler felt rooted to the ground, his eyes wide at her rather unexpected advance. “Um,” he managed, looking at her. “Thank you?” Her eyes had returned to their normal coloring, he noticed. That was a good sign. Perhaps she wouldn’t go blind after all.

Q&A with the Author:

What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

I think the thing I struggle most with is finding the time, and sometimes motivation, to work on any project. With a lot of projects on my plate, it’s sometimes super hard to not just throw my hands up in the air and call it done. When those times happen, I take a breather, work on another project for a while, then come back with fresh eyes. Seems to work every time.

What kind of music do you listen to while you write?

The kind of music I listen to depends on what kind of story/scene I’m working on. I have specific playlists based on the general story, the type of scene, and what emotional response I want to draw from my characters as I’m writing. Those lists are constantly changing, so it’s hard to pinpoint what will be on any list at any given time. But for Tarragon, I’ve been listening to a lot of Lindsey Sterling and Imagine Dragons, with some techno and remixes mixed in.

“When are you going to tell her?”

Tyler opened his eyes at Courtney’s question. “Tell her what, exactly?”

Courtney didn’t meet his eyes as she rummaged in her pack for something to munch on. “About what you are.” She pulled out a packet of granola and opened it.

Tyler’s eyes went amber for a brief moment, but returned to their usual blue. “I don’t know. One thing at a time, I guess. She’s already been through a lot. I don’t want to overwhelm her.”

“A bit late for that, don’t you think,” Courtney understated with a roll of her eyes. “She’s been attacked, knocked out, drowned, and who knows what else. I’m sure hearing you’re a dragon will hardly make a dent in the bucket, if you know what I mean.”

Tyler smiled at that. “True. But what if I’m not ready to tell her?”

Snippets

Snippet 1: A breeze seemed to swirl around inside the enclosure. It swept the dust particles upwards in a spiral, much like powdered snow when stirred by a quick passage of air. Except that shapes began to form inside the column of swirling sand.

Anwen moved forward in eagerness, not sure what was going on, or how the sand managed to stay within the confines of the circle. But it was what was happening inside the swirl of dust that caught her attention.

Small clouds of sand began to form striking images. They reminded her of the puppets from the festival, some long and lean, with others shorter and stockier. Most had wings protruding from joints just below sinuous necks, or further down long spiny backs. One figure reared its head and spouted a swirl of gold colored-dust that undulated like flames.

Dragons.
