Support Your Local Sheriff

by Melinda Curtis

Will he pass the daddy test?

With his job in jeopardy, it couldn’t be a worse time for Sheriff Nate Landry’s recent past to come back to haunt him. But it would take an army to stop SWAT team leader Julie Smith. The fellow cop—and sister of his ex-fiancée—wants one thing from the beleaguered lawman: custody of the toddler son that Nate didn’t know he had.

He may not be natural daddy material, but he quickly takes a shine to little Duke. And then there are the feelings Nate’s been hiding for years. Only now Julie’s running for sheriff of Harmony Valley—against him. Time to retreat? Not if he wants a future with the woman he loves.

“Hello, Nate.” Julie Smith put nearly three years of disdain and disappointment in those two words.

“Julie.” Nate shot to his feet, steady as always, guarded as always. If Nate was the sheriff, he was off-duty. He wore a brown-checkered shirt and blue jeans, not a service uniform.

Duke was balanced on her thighs, his small hard-soled sneakers digging in for purchase as he reached for Nate once more.

Couldn’t Duke loathe Nate as much as Julie did?

Couldn’t Nate look as if the past few years had been one big heartbreak?

No on both counts.

Duke’s fingers flexed as he reached for Nate.

And Nate? It was annoying how good he looked. His black hair might have been in need of a trim and his chin shadowed with stubble, but his teeth hadn’t fallen out, his broad shoulders weren’t bullet-ridden, and worst of all, he didn’t look sleep-deprived.

The mayor and town council were still on the pulpit surrounded by animated residents with loud voices. Chaos had arrived in Harmony Valley, just not the way Julie had envisioned it.

The man next to Nate came to his feet. He wore a wedding ring, held a swaddled newborn, had spit-up on the shoulder of his yellow polo, and New Dad bags under his eyes.

Julie gave him a sympathetic smile. Duke reviled naps and could be a restless sleeper at night. Not as restless as Julie lately, but still…

The man with the baby cleared his throat, shaking Nate out of tall, dark and stunned mode.

“Flynn,” Nate said. “This is Julie, my…”

And there it was. That awkwardness Julie had been waiting years for.

She pounced. “I’m the sister of Nate’s ex-fiancée.”

Flynn slid a questioning look Nate’s way.

Her moment had arrived. Julie stood, scooping Duke to her hip with her left arm. “Didn’t Nate tell you he was engaged? He left my sister at the altar.” That wasn’t all he’d left, but Julie didn’t want to waste all her ammunition on the first volley.

Flynn didn’t look as shocked as she’d hoped. She blamed Nate. He inspired loyalty wherever he went. Even after being dumped, April had forbidden Julie to confront him. But that ban had been lifted. It was open season on the sheriff.

Duke toppled forward, letting his full weight drop between Julie and Nate, unexpectedly shifting Julie’s center of gravity. She slurped in air like it came through a clogged milkshake straw. The stitches beneath her right collarbone pulled sharply, tugging at nerves that quivered up and down her neck and shoulder.

Mom was right. The doctor was right. It was too soon.

And too late to back out now.

“Ms. Curtis has created complex characters in Vince and Harley as well as creating fantastic secondary characters in the elderly residents of Harmony Valley. In each installment of this series, this reader enjoys “checking in” with them.” MarcieR, Amazon review

Marrying the Wedding Crasher

by Melinda Curtis

This bachelor’s pretend girlfriend just made a shocking discovery—

She’s pregnant!

Although they dated for only a month, Harley O’Hannigan just agreed to be Vince Messina’s plus-one at a Harmony Valley wedding. Big mistake, given her deepening feelings for the tall, dark, unavailable bachelor. And what about Vince’s long-buried family history? Then there’s the growing secret that could transform this pretend relationship into the real thing…

Praise for Melinda Curtis:

“Wonderfully entertaining!” Jayne Ann Krentz, NYT Bestseller (referring to Playing for Love)

“Reading Slade and Christine’s story reminded me of why I enjoy romance. SEASON OF CHANGE has found a place on my keeper shelf!” Brenda Novak, NYT Bestseller

Amazon * Harlequin * Barnes & Noble

Their room in the bed & breakfast was small, just two twin beds. The comforters were a pale green and matched the shade of the thick towels in the tiny bathroom. As soon as the door closed and it was just Harley and Vince, the room felt as confining as a jail cell.

“You take the bed by the door.” Harley plopped her duffel and backpack on the one in the corner. “We need some ground rules. All changing will occur in the bathroom.”

“Oops.” Vince had ripped off his shirt while her back was turned.

She couldn’t un-see that, but Harley covered her eyes anyway. “Put your clothes back on.”

“Too late. I’m down to my boxers.”

She didn’t want to peek. Honest. But she did.

His jeans were still on.

“Made you look.” That grin. He hadn’t smiled since they’d stepped foot on his family’s property. She hadn’t expected to see it after their talk in the restaurant.

The butterflies tried to return. She sucked in a breath and sucked in her stomach, stuffing every reaction to Vince—positive and negative—deep down inside. “What happened to the brooding man I’ve been with the better part of the day?”

“He came into a bedroom with a beautiful woman and all his cares slipped away.” It was a lie. Vince couldn’t quite erase the shadows around his eyes. “Or it could be that this is payback for telling Reggie I threw out my back.” He was teasing her. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe Vince needed some brevity after the stress of seeing his family for the first time in years.

Harley hit Vince with her pillow, grabbed her duffel and retreated to the bathroom. It was the size of the closet in her apartment. She contemplated taking a cold shower. But the shower stall was so small, she’d have trouble shaving her legs. She doubted Vince could fit his shoulders in there. She was getting claustrophobic just brushing her teeth.

And, boy, was she glad she’d decided to bring a football jersey and boxer shorts to sleep in rather than a nightie. Nothing sexy about a woman wearing a football jersey and boxers that reached to her knees.

“Are you decent?” she called through the door once she’d changed.

“You used to think so.”

The impulse to submit to his charm was strong. Harley gritted her teeth and returned to the bedroom.

Vince sat up in bed, on top of the coverlet. Still no shirt on.

Harley’s jaw popped. This was going to be a test of wills. Mostly a test of her will.

by Anna J. Stewart

He never relied on anyone but himself…but he needs her now!

Butterfly Harbor deputy Matt Knight wants two things: to date Lori Bradley and the chance to adopt Kyle, a troubled teen. Wounded in Afghanistan, Matt knows he can’t move forward anchored to the past. Matt Knight was all about doing right by people. Especially those he cared about. But there wasn’t any moving forward, not with his life, not with Lori, as long as he was still anchored to the past.

The phone rang. Before Matt could reach for the receiver, Jasper answered.

“It’s for you, Matt. A Chris Walters?”

“That’s Kyle’s caseworker,” Matt said as he picked up his extension.
“Chris? Kyle okay?”

“Doing well, actually.” The social worker’s encouraging words belied the tension in his voice. “We’re still on track for an early release. For now at least.”

“What’s that mean?” Matt squeezed the receiver so hard his fingers
tingled. “What’s going on?”

“The judge in charge of Kyle’s case is retiring. His replacement is
reviewing all the cases ahead of time and, well, since we’re jumping beyond fosterage to adoption, she has some concerns about your living situation.”

“What’s wrong with my living situation?” Matt asked. “I’ve got a room
ready for him, he’ll have a part-time job with the sheriff’s department, and most importantly he’ll have more stability than he’s known in years.”

“I’m on your side, remember? You don’t have to convince me. She’s not denying your petition, Matt, but she has suggested a female influence in the house wouldn’t be a bad thing for Kyle. And given your marital status…”

“That’s about to be resolved.” Matt looked down at the papers on his desk. “I filed the divorce papers and am getting ready to sign them as we speak.”

“Okay. We’ll have to see how that plays with the judge.”

“Given Kyle’s last female influence was too hopped-up on prescription meds to give him a second thought, I wouldn’t think this would be any judge’s first concern.” Matt hated to speak ill of Kyle’s mother, but the truth was the truth.

“It’s a concern, Matt. And the judge only suggested it would be in your and Kyle’s best interest if there was someone in your life to help bring a bit of balance. Even if it’s just a girlfriend, which brings me to what we talked about before. She’s going to want to call Lori as a character witness.”

“Lori? How does she know about Lori?” The last time his heart had pounded this hard he’d been dodging bullets.

“Because I listed her in my report. You said you were dating her, that you thought it was getting serious. Are you telling me something’s changed?”

Changed? Other than Matt all but ignoring her the last few weeks while he got his head on straight and cleared the emotional deck? “No, nothing’s changed,” Matt blurted before his brain could catch up with the panic seizing his chest. He’d made a promise to Kyle, and Matt Knight never made a promise he couldn’t keep. “We’ve been seeing each other for a while, off and on.” Most recently off. All the more reason to remedy that.

“She’s completely on board with me taking Kyle in.”

“So you’re okay with her listed as a character witness? She’ll back up your statement should the judge want to call her in during Kyle’s hearing?”

“Yeah, of course.” Matt swallowed the lie. Well, it wasn’t a lie exactly. Lori did know about Kyle but Matt’s current relationship with her might be a bit, well, up in the air. “Have they set a date yet for the hearing?”

“Um, yeah. Hang on, I’ve got that right…” The sound of shuffling papers scraped against Matt’s ear. “Three weeks from Monday. Looks like the judge has us penciled in for two in the afternoon.”

Matt scribbled the date on his calendar, noting that was the same day as the big welcome dinner that opened the Butterfly Festival. That would take some juggling given it was all hands on deck in town for the department. “I’ll be there.” Somehow. “I thought I’d come up and see him in a couple of weeks. Need to figure out my days off.”

“You’re on the visitor’s list for anytime,” Chris said. “I’m glad you told me about Lori. This will go a long way with this judge in approving Kyle’s placement.”

“I hope so.” With Kyle’s troubled past, the only other placement option for him would be a group foster home or to extend his stint in the detention center he currently resided in. “Let me know if there are any more changes.”

“You got it.”

Matt hung up. Why was it, even when he had the best of intentions, he ended up messing things up? At least now he had even more of a reason to apologize to Lori. As much as he wanted her back in his life, he needed her.

Kyle needed her. Unease settled in his gut like a stone. He hated lying. To anyone.

But especially to Lori Bradley.

“Everything okay?” Jasper asked. “Is Kyle still getting out?”

“He sure is.” Matt picked up his pen, clicked it open and scratched his name on the divorce degree. A few seconds later, he set the sealed envelope on the counter, where it would go out in the afternoon mail.

Q & A With Brenda Novak

Please, tell us a story. It can be long or short. From your childhood or last week. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it’s yours. What’s your story?

When my youngest son was only six, a cousin, older by five years, slipped into the attic where my husband and I were storing a great many things and ferreted out the presents I’d put there at least a month before Christmas. Armed with the knowledge of what those presents were, it seemed he took some kind of perverse pleasure in destroying Thad’s fantasy of Santa Clause. He told Thad everything he was going to get—and let him know that Ted and I had bought each item and tucked it all away for safekeeping until December 25th, when we would pretend that Santa had come down the chimney and left those items for him.

When some children learn the truth, they get angry with their parents for perpetuating this myth. Thad didn’t react that way. He was angry with his cousin for destroying the magic we were trying to keep alive for him. He wasn’t yet ready to let that go. But I had gotten Thad something for Christmas this cousin failed to mention, probably because, in his mind, it was “just a book.” I have to admit Thad didn’t entertain himself with that book first of all. It wasn’t until later in the day, after the excitement of playing with his other toys had worn off a bit, that he and I sat down together to look through THE POLAR EXPRESS.

The book had come with a tape we listened to. I remember both of us being a little awed by the beauty of the illustrations and the way the words rolled off the narrator’s tongue as that tape played—“hot chocolate thick and rich as chocolate bars…” Sometimes I still think of that line, when it may have nothing to do with Christmas. But it was this gift that turned out to be the one I was most grateful I’d purchased because that story helped my little boy get beyond the disappointment of losing Santa Clause.  He took the same ride as the protagonist, who goes to the North Pole and is lucky enough to be selected to receive the first gift of Christmas. He shared that boy’s wonder and his joy when he received the bell from the harness of Santa’s reindeer that was supposed to help him believe in the magic of Christmas. Thad also shared in the disappointment when that bell was lost and was elated when spared the boy that loss by leaving it for him under the tree. Somehow that book softened the jarring blow of reality because it taught Thad that even though there may not be a jolly man dressed in a red suit who delivers toys to all good girls and boys, the magic of Christmas is real—as long as he chooses to believe.

Now I’m much older. But, like the narrator of that book, I can say, “the bell still rings for me.” I hope Thad will always be able to say the same.

Nine Full-Length Novels, 1 Novella, and 1 Short Story from NY Times, USA Today, National and International Bestselling Authors.

The eleven NY Times, USA Today, and National and International Bestselling Authors of Heroes To Swoon For have teamed up to bring together one steamy set of romance and thrills. They all believe in a great love story and a happily ever after, so these tales are sure to please.

The authors live all around the United States but have been brought together through writing groups and their mutual love of hot males, strong heroines, and a love story that makes them sigh with happiness and pleasure.

Jade Kerrion writes award-winning and occasionally best-selling science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary novels anchored on unlikely romances you will root for and happy endings you can believe in. Her favorite romance is the Double Helix love triangle between Galahad—the lab-created perfect human being; Danyael—an alpha empath and Galahad’s physical template; and Zara—the woman who can wreak more havoc with love than most people can with hate

Chantel Rhondeau is hooked on romance and suspense. She thinks there’s nothing better than a great mystery, but basically an optimist, Chantel loves a book to end ‘happily ever after.’ When she isn’t writing, Chantel enjoys playing cards with her family, bowling, and snuggling with her four kitty ‘children.’

Rachelle Ayala is a bestselling Asian American author of dramatic romantic suspense and humorous, sexy contemporary romances. Her heroines are feisty and her heroes hot. She writes emotionally challenging stories but believes in the power of love and hope. She has won awards in multicultural and historical romance.

Lyssa Layne is a blogger turned author after being inspired by Rachelle Ayala. She enjoys hot romances and loves to shock her readers right until the final page. Lyssa enjoys chasing after her two year-old-daughter, being a tourist in her own city, and anything involving peanut butter.

Michele Shriver writes women’s fiction and contemporary romance. Her books feature flawed-but-likeable characters in real-life settings. She’s not afraid to break the rules, but never stops believing in happily ever after. Michele counts among her favorite things a good glass of wine, a hockey game, and a sweet and sexy book boyfriend, not necessarily in that order.

P.C. Zick began her writing career in 1998 as a journalist. She’s won various awards for her essays, columns, editorials, articles, and fiction. Today, she writes romance and contemporary literature with her pen drawing plots filled with love, hope, and forgiveness.

K.S. Thomas is a mother by day, an author by night and a twenty-four/seven coffee addict. Although she hasn’t yet (and may never) decided on one preferred genre, there are three things you can always expect to find in her novels – humor (via plenty of wit and sarcasm) – drama (because that’s life) and, always – ALWAYS – a happily ever after (even when it’s not in the most expected ways).

Stacy Eaton is an International Best Selling Amazon author of eight books and a full-time detective who has a passion for putting the pieces together while investigating the crime. She is also a wife, mother, business owner and on the board of directors for her local domestic violence center. When she’s not ‘working’, she’s ‘writing’. Stacy loves chilling with her family and photography.

Melinda Curtis is an award winning, USA Today recommended, Amazon best selling author.  She writes the independently published, steamy Hollywood Rules series as Mel Curtis. Jayne Ann Krentz says of Blue Rules: “Sharp, sassy, modern version of a screwball comedy from Hollywood’s Golden Age except a lot hotter.”

Jennifer Saints writes romance because she believes that when you take a human being to the very core of his existence, then you will find that what matters more than anything else is to be loved and to give love. She is an award winning USA Today Bestselling author and writes in a number of genres. She also works with several charities to raise money for abused and homeless women.

Julie Leto

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Julie Leto has sold over forty-five books to four publishers–all featuring strong, confident women and the super-sexy men they drive to their knees. To date, she has over 1 million books in print across the world.
