Three books in one:
The Dead Held Hands
The Machine
The Temple of the Exploding Head

Starfarers and explorers, the League settled on Kana thousands of years ago. They found it to be a paradise, a perfect, virtually uninhabited planet waiting just for them in the cradle of space.
Lovely Kana … it was too good to be true …

But, all was not as it seemed. Simmering beneath the ground was a demented god who had soaked Kana in blood for untold ages, luring in victims, lying to them, and rejoicing in their suffering as they died at the hands of his dark angels.
And there will be blood again … From his Temple in the ground, the Horned God stirs.
When Lord Kabyl of Blanchefort, a young man troubled by the weight of the world, dares give his heart to a girl from a mysterious ancient household, one that pre-dates the League itself, he comes to know the shadows of the past that hover over her.

He comes to know of the Horned God, and for love he is destined to face him. All roads lead to the Temple of the Exploding Head, a place of evil and death, rooted in the ancient past, but also tied to the distant future.
“We were evil once,” she said, “and the gods are still punishing us…”

Snippet:

She began having visions when she was five years old. All of her kind had visions, and hers were especially vivid. She could see the future, and she didn’t want to. Many of her family saw their deaths in their visions, at the hands of the demons, and they crumpled up in sadness and waited for it to happen—waited for the end to come. She watched one of her brothers waste away in such a state. She went to her grandmother and pleaded
“Why, why does this have to be?”
And her grandmother calmed her as only she could and said: “Nothing has to be. Nothing is indelibly etched. If you see bad future, or you see a darkness coming, then make it better. Keep your head clear and fight for what you want, as I have done. How do you think I’ve lasted so long?”
Her aunts and uncles didn’t like that sort of talk. What sort of thing was that to tell a child? Filling her head with dreams and impossibilities. Their motto was simpler and much more stark: Live your life while you can and hope for the best, and, when the end comes, let your head swarm and take you to places where there is no pain and sadness, where the demons can’t hurt you.
As if such a place could exist.

HALLOWEEN MONSTER MASH COUNTDOWN BLITZ, DAY 10 – KAT by Ren Garcia

Lord Belmont’s life ended in Clovis, in the impenetrable darkness beneath the ground where forbidden rites were once held. Lady Gwendolyn was his love, body and soul, and the Demon in Blue Light killed her.

Every year, on the anniversary of Gwen’s death, he returned to Clovis to stand in the cold desolation, hearing the wind moan through the lonely passes, feeling her loss all over again.

On this anniversary, he wasn’t alone in Clovis. He heard the noises rustling in the brush. He smelled the raw river of Shadow tech. Then he saw it:

The claws …
The flicking tail …
The maniacal, glittering eyes fixed on him …
“I’ve been waiting for you,” it said in a grating voice as it attacked.

* * * * *

Far away, across the cosmos in a city of wondrous crystal towers, two people watch in horror as the desperate scene at Clovis unfolds. They had worked so hard, sacrificed so much, even argued for it before the gods. They convinced the gods they were right, that they knew best, and everything would go well.

But, things weren’t going well at Clovis.

If this situation went poorly, then ages worth of work would be lost, and, just possibly, the universe might come to an end.

Snippet #3

Atha scoffed, her helmet glinting in the dim light. “Yeah? You selected an unimpressive, filth-covered twig from the Black Hats’ basement. I saw the list Fiddler Crowe gave you, I went over the names. There were warlords and Marists from the heights of Xaphan society. There were real Black Hats listed, a couple of Sisters mixed in too, some Fleet officers, Warbird captains, members of the Learned and the Chaste, of the Hospitalers and the Science Ministry—some pretty impressive names. There was even a fricken’ Brandtball player on there! How cool would that have been?” She ground her teeth in a threatening manner. “So tell me, why this homely little … nobody, and your explanation better be good, otherwise I’m going to disincorporate the three of you right here and now and punch my own ticket to the Hell of the Gods. I’m probably going to be heading there anyways for all of this.  –An infuriated Atha questioning A-Ram and Alesta

 Snippet #4

She placed the rose behind her. She seemed troubled by her own giant-sized breasts. She had issues placing her arms, she was off-balance. The Black Hat was done with it. It seemed she had been wearing a harness that had mimicked her breasts and her rear-end, enlarging them to ridiculous proportions, but, its very size gave her trouble moving about. She cast the harness aside, revealing herself to be of thin, modest proportions. Free of the harness, she raised her clawed hand and beckoned him to come. “This is our place, provided by the gods. You have been promised to me, now let us abuse each other … how I have waited.”

What sort of demented Black Hat was this, he wondered?  –Lord Stenstrom and Kat meeting for the first time in the Ruins of Clovis

GET THE BRANDY TO BAZZ . . .
That’s all Paymaster Stenstrom, the Lord of Belmont-South Tyrol, has to do and the old warbird Seeker is his. He has dreamed of captaining a Fleet ship his entire life.
Little does Paymaster Stenstrom realize that he is in the grip of an old Vendetta and the short trip to Bazz might very well be his last.
Faced with a dead ship and a lost crew, Paymaster Stenstrom finds help in the strangest places: the thief Marine and the milquetoast young man from the Admiral’s office, and, though he just became acquainted with these two strangers, he discovers they have been influencing each other’s lives for a very long time.
Something sinister hovers over Paymaster Stenstrom and his two new friends, something they are only now becoming aware of. The SANDS OF THE SOLAR EMPIRE stretch out before them in an endless gulf brimming with the unknown. Can a masked Paymaster, a thief, a coward and a once great warbird face what awaits them?
Book 2 – Against the Druries

That’s what they say on Bazz, that the “Deep Sea”, the open space between the two planets, is cursed and full of bad dreams—but nobody ever listens to people from Bazz, do they?
Paymaster Stenstrom, Private Taara and Lord A-Ram struggle to navigate the Seeker, an old warbird, through the shipping lanes to Bazz. If the Paymaster can’t get to Bazz with his cargo of brandy, he loses the ship and will probably end up in jail as well.
Jail? If only . . . The three adventurers are about to discover the old farfetched mariner stories are very real and that the Devil himself waits for the unwary in dark places where there is no help.
The Circle closes in on Stenstrom, Taara and A-Ram, and its judgment for them is far worse than any jail cell. The Seeker is about of become just another ship that set sail from safe shores and was never heard from again, unless . . .
The Belmont Saga concludes in this heartbreaking and action-packed tale of friendship and dedication, of vile evil and hopeless terror, and that sometimes help for those gone astray comes from the most unlikely of places.

–The fourth man looked about and then carefully studied Stenstrom. He had a groping, invasive sort of stare. “¿Y qué tenemos nosotros aquí? You have a Fleet adjutant for a Master Helmsman, and a Marine private as first officer? A novel bit of selection there, a-heheh. And you sir, that is not a standard uniform you are wearing, is it? What is your rank, Lord Belmont, pray tell?”

“You’ll pardon us if we ask the questions for the time being,” Taara said, jumping in giving her SK a shake.

The smallest man turned to her. “Ah, ce qu’une petite fille délicieuse . . .

“What?” Taara replied.

The man chuckled. “Your pardon, I have a love of irrelevant and obsolete languages of old. A hobby of mine, a-heheh. I merely said what a handsome young lady stands before us.” He waved his arms in an inviting manner. “Please, allow me to introduce myself. I am Chance Venable, and these are my brothers, Clem Venable, Innocent Venable, and Lemmuel Venable. We are simple traders scraping by as best we can.”  From Against the Druries. Sygillis snapped back, her mastery of the Dirge allowing her to talk and hold it at the same time. “And, if anything happens to Captain Davageage as a result of this childish delay, Mapes, I will kill you myself as many times and in as many ways possible. When a Black Hat is taken prisoner aboard Captain Davage’s ship, the Sisters have every intention of executing her, to put her to a slow, painful death. That is what’s done to Black Hats, and no one dares challenge the Sisters’ authority. They are astounded when the Captain refuses to allow it.

Using his Gift of Sight, Captain Davage, the Lord of the Great House of Blanchefort, has gotten a glimpse of the Black Hat’s face, and is shocked. Though no one but a Sister would ever willingly face a Black Hat and hope to survive, he enters her cell.
