Do first impressions always last?

When veterinarian Brett Coulson and stable owner Samantha Hanson-Bishop meet, it’s hate at first sight. He thinks she’s a snobby, stuck-up bitch who wouldn’t know nice if it bit her on the arse. She thinks he’s a blundering, inexperienced little boy who shouldn’t be within fifty miles of her prized horses. But it doesn’t matter much—they’ll never have to see each other again. Or will they?

When fate throws them into the same room together at a charity fundraiser, the resentment between them quickly resurfaces. But mixed in with that resentment is something they both tried to deny… attraction. Will the chemistry between them cancel out the animosity, or were their first impressions just too powerful to change?

Hello—thank you so much for stopping by!

I’m so excited to share a little bit about myself and my story in the Coming In Hot boxed set!

Tell us about your title featured in this set.

My story is called On Her High Horse, and is set in the Yorkshire Dales, in England. It’s an enemies-to-lovers story about a young vet and one of his clients.

Once I got going, it probably only took me a couple of weeks to write (I don’t write full time, so I have to squeeze my writing in around everything else I do to earn a living!).

The title was actually a complete nightmare to come up with! Sometimes titles come to me before I even write a story, and other times they pop up while I’m writing. This one eluded me for a long time. I was Googling horsey phrases and veterinary phrases for ages, until I finally came up with this—and it fits the story really well, I think. So it was worth waiting for!

Tell us something about yourself.

I’m from Derbyshire, in England, where I still live with my dog, Scamp. As I mentioned before, I don’t write full time—I actually do lots of little jobs which make up a full time job; writing, marketing, editing, PR, web design, formatting, etc… basically, I eat, sleep and breathe books in one way or another, so it’s pretty awesome. I love being my own boss. I love spending time out in the countryside with my other half and my dog, reading (of course), films, and travelling.

Tell us about your writing process.

It varies massively depending on what I’m writing. For novel length work, I do tend to have some kind of plan, or at the very least an outline, in place. But for short stories and novellas, I tend to just write and see where the characters take me. I write as and when I can, juggling it around everything else I do. The benefit of being my own boss is I can move projects around if I need to—as long as I meet all the deadlines, it’s all good! 😉

What is your favourite genre to read?

I don’t have one, really. I like reading different kinds of books—as long as there’s a gripping story, I’m happy.
What would you say is the one thing you are most passionate about?

The people I care about.

When you are not writing, what do you like to do?

Read, relax, go walking in the countryside, watch movies, visit stately homes and ancient sites, travel.

If someone who hasn’t read any of your books and asked you to describe your story in this set (the elevator pitch!) what would you say?

Hunky young vet and sexy older woman go from enemies to lovers with lots of drama in between!

Where can readers connect with you?

There was a knock at the door. Brett looked up from where he was transferring hand-written notes onto the practice’s computer system—he hadn’t yet gotten comfortable with taking the iPad out on calls. He was paranoid he’d drop it in a cow pat, or worse. “Yes, come in!”

One of the veterinary surgery’s receptionists—an efficient blonde called Natasha—sidled in, a wry expression on her face. “Hi, Brett. I’m really sorry to bother you, but there’s a woman on the phone, and she’s being, um, rather rude.”

Frowning, Brett replied, “Who is it? And why is she being rude?”

Natasha blew out a breath and shrugged. “She won’t tell me what the issue is. Won’t even tell me what animal she has. She just keeps saying she’ll only speak to a ‘trained professional.’ I don’t know who it is, either, not really. All I know is her first name is—”

“Samantha?” Brett supplied, his shoulders slumping and eyebrows raising.

“Uh, yeah. How did you know? Oh God, I haven’t gone and insulted one of your friends or something, have I? I didn’t mean to, honestly. It’s just she’s being a bit difficult…”

“Natasha, don’t panic. She’s no friend of mine. I’ve never even met the woman. Besides, if she was one of my friends, I’d be giving her a bollocking for being rude to one my staff, wouldn’t I? Anyway, if it’s the Samantha I think it is, then she’s being very difficult, and you’re being overly polite. Andrew warned me about her.”

“He did?”

“Yeah. Bloody typical that she’d phone while he’s away. The man barely ever takes a holiday, and now he finally has, his most awkward client is on the blower. He damn well owes me one after this.”

“If she’s a regular client, how come I’ve never spoken to her before?”

Shrugging, Brett replied, “Dunno. Maybe she’s got Andrew’s mobile number, or something?”

Natasha gasped. “But he never gives out his mobile number to clients. He’s very strict about that—always asks us to take a message and if it’s urgent, pass it on to him directly.”

“Yeah…” Brett scratched his head. “He didn’t say much about her, beyond that she can be difficult. Honestly, I was a bit distracted when he mentioned it so I wasn’t paying a great deal of attention. I wish I’d asked more questions now, but I never actually thought I’d have the misfortune of having to deal with her.”

“You haven’t, yet.” Natasha raised her eyebrows and pointed with her chin towards the phone on his desk.

“Good point.” He gave a wan smile. “Suppose I’d better find out what she wants, hadn’t I? If she’s special enough to have Andrew’s precious mobile phone number, then I probably ought to keep her sweet.”

“Probably wise.” Natasha left the room, closing the door behind her, but not before Brett spotted the slight smile on her face. Relieved to pass on the bitchy customer to him, no doubt.

Taking a deep breath, he picked up the phone. “Hello, Brett Coulson speaking, how can I help?”

“Oh,” came the reply, “Brett. Ah yes, you’re the other vet, aren’t you? Jolly good. Know what you’re talking about, do you?” The woman’s accent was posh, southern. Like she’d been to a finishing school or something.

Gritting his teeth, Brett then pasted a smile on his face, hoping it would be apparent in his tone, despite the daggers he was actually staring at her through the handset. “Yes, I most certainly do.” Should fucking do, after five years of training and the same again working in the profession. I’m not on bloody work experience here.

“But you sound so young.”

Glad she couldn’t see him, Brett rolled his eyes. Her problem obviously wasn’t an emergency, the way she was waffling on, time-wasting. “I’m almost twenty-nine, Mrs…”

“It’s Ms, actually. Samantha Hanson-Bishop here. So you’re still a baby then, really.”

“Is there something I can help you with, Ms Hanson-Bishop? Only I’ve a call to go out on in a few minutes.” He couldn’t help the emphasis he’d put on the Ms. It could be construed as sarcastic, but it was still a damn sight more polite than anything he really wanted to say. Would she just get to the point already?

Dog Days In The Fortunate Islands Book Tour @AuthorDogDays

Dog Days In The Fortunate Islands is an ideal read for those contemplating retirement, moving to the Canary Islands or an extended trip through Spain. The book will also appeal to any dog lovers and holidaymakers who enjoy an interesting story.

On the brink of retirement, John and his wife Sally are determined to end a life at the grindstone in grimy and wet Lancashire. Together with their beloved Jack Russell/Staffie cross, Freddie, a rescue dog from the local RSPCA, they embark on the journey of a lifetime and relocate to the island of Tenerife.

Selling up, they make the move to the north of Tenerife, a part almost unknown to the casual tourist – their very own hidden paradise. Relaxed and surrounded by stunning coastal views, life in their new home, set amidst orange groves and banana plantations, is very different indeed! The weather is fantastic, the temperature idyllic, the people so friendly and the cost of living outrageously low… what more could they ask for?

Adjusting to life abroad, and all of the costs that come with it, are explained in the book – from buying a new home and sorting out living taxes, to integrating into the local community and taking the dreaded Spanish driving test. Follow John and Sally as they learn a new language and take on a couple of new hobbies, while Freddie takes off on some unbelievable (but true!) exploits with his new canine friends.
With a colourful collection of characters, travelling anecdotes that stretch from the English Midlands and all the way through mainland Spain in an old classic car, and some not so perfect moments that bring us back down to earth from time to time, this is a series of adventures that you will not want to miss.

I was born in 1943 at Derby Royal Infirmary, a war baby, and for the first 18 years of my life my home was in Ashby de la Zouch, an old market town in Leicestershire. I was sent away to become a boarder at Kings Mead Preparatory School, Seaford, and then Rugby School. Having been at Rugby has certainly stood me in good stead throughout my life, and I could not have asked for better.

I am still not quite sure exactly how it came about (perhaps because my maternal grandfather was a solicitor) but I suddenly found myself articled to a firm of solicitors in Ashby. It was not a happy period for anyone concerned, although I have to concede that I learned a lot during my time there, but it was clear that I was too much of a free spirit to enjoy being chained to a desk for a pittance each week. The only highlights to my miserable years as a bookworm were trips out to criminal courts or prisons. I must have been to every prison in the Midlands.

Concurrently, I was commissioned into the Territorial Army and still proudly display my certificate signed by HM The Queen.

When my parent’s marriage began to founder, I relocated to West Sussex to help out at their latest venture, a country hotel. My few weeks’ offer of help (neither of my parents having even the slightest knowledge of, or interest in, the hotel industry) turned into some 35 years, with me taking over from them, changing and extending the place considerably along the way. My restaurant in the hotel held 2 AA Rosettes for food for a number of years right up until I sold the business.
My son Marcus, my pride and joy, was born in St. Richards Hospital, Chichester. As I write this, he has turned 41, and he is an accountant. Married to Tina, they have provided me with two lovely grandchildren, Josh and Sam.

After I sold my hotel I moved up to Lancashire, where I had met and later married Sally. We started a new business together, a commercial legal services company, something completely new for both of us. During that time we encountered a puppy, Freddie, a Jack Russell/Staffie cross, who we “rescued” from the RSPCA and fell in love with.

We sold out on a high after some 10 years, enabling us to seriously consider the move to Tenerife. With nothing to hold us back, we made the life-changing move, and have not regretted it. Did I think that retirement would be relaxation in the sunshine? Far from it! I think that I have never been so busy, and the latest of my activities is becoming restaurant reviewer for the main Canary Islands newspaper. I was flattered to have been invited to the position. Our exploits in Tenerife with Freddie form the backbone of the stories in my first book.

My second book is an entirely different proposition, a different genre, and written in a completely different style. When a cache of letters, written by my father to my mother during the years of World War 2 eventually came in to my possession, I concluded that I should share some of them with a wider audience. In between a selection of those letters is traced the story of his life over those five long war years. It fascinated me to learn of the day to day life of an enlisted man – and later officer – as the war progressed to its inevitable conclusion, though finally without him as he languished behind the wire in a POW camp in Germany after having been captured on the battlefields of Normandy. And so his story has finally been written and my second book has now made it into print.

Emily Macque, a young, beautiful junior partner in her father’s law firm, is but a heartbeat away from love or destiny. Duty brings Emily to a frozen Island estate two hundred and fifty miles north of Chicago. Devotion requires she delve into the property history to settle an estate probate. Death lures her into the arms of the shadows seduction created by the flickering light and dark shadows.

What flames the timeless passions spanning the decades? Love, desire or obsession?

Colin Jorgenson, once a Great Lakes mariner, is a strong man haunted by love and loss. How long will he return each night, gripped by desire, hoping to find the woman he has loved for a century?

Beneath the pristine Island beauty, passions hungered, lingered in the ardent darkness. His passions, fueled by decades of loneliness and longing, could no longer be denied. Will they face eternity together or love in secret as dark things are to be loved between the shadows and the soul?

It all started with death. Emily Macque’s Uncle John died and she was sent by her father’s law firm to handle his probate, personal affairs, and summer estate. She was also sent there to rest as she was recently diagnosed with a heart condition. Such is the beginning of Muffy Wilson’s The Para-Portage of Emily. Emily’s stay was supposed to be uneventful. However, as she dug deeper, she uncovered more than what was normal. Muffy Wilson wrote about a love which transcends time. In the Para-Portage of Emily, this love was put under scrutiny and was explained thoroughly.

The novel was exquisitely done. It was written with such grace that even when it took time to uncover all the mysteries, it was worth it in the end. The dialogues were cleanly written, too. This was a book I had the pleasure of savoring. How Muffy Wilson wrote it will give readers the right feel. The sensitive details were written with such grace that it didn’t sound too much. In terms of the characters, they were like real life people. They were suitable for the story and not out of place. As far as I’m concerned, I’m in love with Emily. In addition to that, I was torn between Colin and Cooper. Overall, I think The Para-Portage of Emily is a wonderful, seductive read. It’s definitely a page-turner. If you are a fan of romance, this book is an indulgence. It was mine.

This book is just brilliant and so damn good. I was hooked in the story within a few pages and I just couldn’t stop reading the book. It was impossible to put it down once I had started. The story is very well written and unfolds very nicely for the reader. It drags you in and keeps you spellbound.
Their is a nice mix between paranormal, romance and mystery in the book and you can see that Muffy Wilson combines them very well in this book. I must say that just the way of combining things into one book is what makes this book so good. It is not just pure anything, but more than pure awesome.

I like how the story is told and how the book is written. The style and tone is very well done and the tone of the language and how the language is used to drag the reader in, is what makes the book so good. Emily is also a very entertaining character that I like a lot and at first I was unsure about her but the more I got to know her the better I liked her. The character development and how they grow and change in the book is also very nice and very well done. You can see the character changing and growing in the story and how they react to things in the story to a good way.

This is a must to read book because it is very well written with a very good storyline that is easy to follow, but still gives you surprises. I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!

‘Game of Love’
“My darling…how I have missed you. While you were away today, my love, I thought of little else but you. I wrote to you. Let me read to you what I wrote…
There is a captivating sort of magical look in your eyes that tells me there are a few surprises lurking within that beautiful brain—and mayhap, those loins—of yours.

It is the kind of look that invites me to step closer, much closer, until we are touching
but not touching; just sort of “feeling” each other’s presence.

My face hovers so close to your own and our eyes are not just locked into each other but more magnetically drawn, like moonbeams.

I reach up and brush the side of your face with my hand,

and your face is so close I can feel the warmth rising from you.

I keep my eyes on yours as long as the connection will last and then

I lean down and gently, ever so gently, brush my lips on yours.

It is positively electric and without noticing our bodies are suddenly pressed fully against each other pushing with a sense of urgency and need.

Our mouths press together and tongue seeks tongue,

warmth seeks warmth and need seeks need…

We kiss for what seems like forever or perhaps just an instant,

but who really knows…

Things happen for reasons, good reasons we have no business questioning or comprehending…

Here. Now. I want you…

I want to look into those mischievous eyes and see them soften with desire.

I want to look up at your face from my explorations of your velvet folds and see a look of complete passionate surrender overtake you.

I want to feel my touch move you to places we can only explore together…

I want you to sit astride me, so I can look up at you.

And I want you to ride me to the edge of the abyss, where we both hover,

hang in that sweet incalculable moment;

that moment of wanting to tumble over, to plummet, but wanting even more to NOT…

to have it last, as long as we can stand it,

there on the edge of cataclysmic satisfaction,

but holding it off, and holding it, and holding it, and….

I can’t wait for when you finally gasp and sob and

your body spasms and lurches and you fall against my chest,

our bodies pushed together in the heat and the fertile humidity

and your hair cascades across my face and I breathe you in;

I breathe US in, rich, earthy, the smell of fresh baked bread, or just uncorked champagne.

Us, yes, us; our smell, our wonderful particularly unique aroma.

It is to be loved,

my darling,

it is for the loving of you…

It stays with me, my love, it stays with me…
“Come with me, my love, come. Let me show you the depth of my passion, the breadth of my yearning, the hunger I bear for only you in this, our game of love.”

“Colin, beloved…it is no game to me, for you are my life, my breath, my heartbeat.”

The woman rose to her petite height in her buttoned high-heeled boots tight at her small ankles. She was dressed in a broad skirt cinched tightly at the waist with a wide leather belt. Her blouse was broad and blouson with a cascading lace flurry, pinned by a jewel-encrusted cameo, from her small neck down. She wore a short-waisted, scalloped jacket, collarless, a single button under her ample bodice, sporting three-quarter sleeves which exposed an explosion of lace ruffles at the cinched wrists of the blouse beneath. Her wild auburn hair was tied up in ribbons and curls which he released with a mere tug on a single velvet end. The red-hued ringlets of silken curls fell around her shoulders to her back and breasts. The soft wisps of curls framed the beauty that was her face and her eyes softened with love and desire.

“Disrobe, Amalya, here before the fireplace, in the moonlight and heat of our love. Take the shackles which separate us off one by beautiful one and leave them in a puddle of cotton and gabardine at your feet. Leave but the pearls that adorn your earlobes and neck and let them pale in your shadow.”

“Colin, you flatter me so, but I adore it and would never deny your wishes. Here, sit in your chair, by Puppy, and I shall dance for you by firelight, moonlight and God’s light. For our love is a love that is pure and true. I waited my entire life for you to claim me as your own. I will not deny myself the pleasures of your desires—nor mine.”

The Case of Dr Dude
A Michaela McPherson Mystery

A New Series Starter
by Best Selling Mystery Thriller
Author Judith Lucci
Hey everybody, I want to welcome you to my new series, Michaela McPherson Mysteries. The series is set in Richmond where Irish born Michela (Mic) McPherson, a former Richmond homicide detective her retired police dog Angel, and best friend and side kick 82 year old Italian Countess Dorothy Borghase are up to their ears in solving crime that requires quick thinking and ingenious solutions.

A young woman disappears after a job interview at a well-known dentist’s office in Richmond and Mic, Dorothy and Detective Slade O’Brien join forces to solve the crime…a crime with long reaching tentacles that spans continents and generations.
“Please don’t do this to me. Why are you hurting me,” the young voice sobbed. “I don’t know who you are!”
A large hand with dirty, stained fingernails grabbed her shoulder roughly. “Shut up,” he growled as he shook her ferociously until her teeth chattered.
Her tattooed abductor terrified her as she focused on the snake tattoo on his hand. “Just let me go, and I promise I won’t tell anyone,” the young woman whimpered. “I promise.”
“Shut up, or I’ll really hurt you,” the savage voice promised as he slapped her face and slammed her into the side of the vehicle. He shoved her again and bent her body like a pretzel. His body covered hers, making it impossible for anyone to see her from three sides.
The young woman’s voice raised to feverish pitch as another person pushed her into the trunk of her car. The monster pinned her arms behind her head and shoved her elbow against the spare tire. She winced as an excruciating, burning pain sent stinging shocks into her head. She cried uncontrollably and could not stop shaking.
“Shut your yammer,” the man hissed softly, his face so close to her blindfold she could smell his foul breath. “If you don’t, it’ll be much worse for you,” he warned as he loomed over her, making her feel small and defenseless. She couldn’t see him through her translucent blindfold but sensed he had dark hair.
“Please, please, please just let me go. My father will give you a reward. He has a lot of money.” As she made the promise, her teeth chattered violently. Tears streamed down her face, making her cough. She was unable to brush them away.
The man laughed a slow, evil sound that caused chill bumps on her arms. “Your father doesn’t have enough money to stop what we have planned for you, not nearly enough, so shut your pretty mouth and be quiet before I put your lights off.”
A wave of fresh sobs exploded from the terrified woman as she lay in the trunk of the car. Her body shuddered from head to toe, and she couldn’t control the tears streaming from her face.
The noise infuriated her assailant as he glowered at his helpless victim. A feeling of euphoria settled over him. He loved watching helpless women squirm. He shook her head and pounded it against the trunk of the car.
“I told you to shut up. If you don’t stop screaming, I’m gonna cut your voice box out. Do you understand?”
Allison nodded and coughed.
“Be quiet.” Allison heard a female voice speak for the first time. “I’d hate to mess up your pretty face,” she said in a singsong voice that frightened the young woman more than the snarl and guttural voice of the man.
A wave of fresh sobs exploded from the scared woman, as she lay helpless in the trunk of the car. She thrashed around wildly. Where’d the woman come from? She tried to see her through her blindfold but she couldn’t. For some reason, she was more frightened of the woman. Her body shook, and her teeth chattered.
“I hope the bitch doesn’t mess herself up,” the man commented.
The woman stared at him. “You know what to do, so just do it.”
The man hesitated for an instant, and the woman pushed him aside and glared at the helpless young captive.
That was when the lights went out for Allison Massie. The woman stepped back with an evil smile on her face and murmured, “Well, I guess I shut her up.”
Despite the choke hold, the woman glared at him defiantly.
The tattooed man let her go and pushed her against the car. “Get back in the office and do damage control,” he snarled, “and don’t ever cross me again.” He jumped in the car and headed west.

Queen of NOLA Medical Thrillers, Judith Lucci, starts a new series with ‘The Case of Dr. Dude” and it has all the promise of being a new bestseller for her avid fans. Set in Richmond, Virginia, the series features an ex-cop turned Private Investigator, Michaela McPherson, whose informal partnership with an ageing Italian noblewoman, Countess Dorothy (Dottie) Borghese, and backed-up by her retired police dog Angel, make for an intriguing and heart-warming trio that tackle the most brutal of crimes. In this first novel of the series the issue is the kidnapping and selling of young girls into the white slave trade.
The author’s impeccable research shows on every page as her protagonists delve into the mystery of the missing women and take on the Russian mafia in this fast-paced thriller. The skill with which Lucci has placed her readers on the streets of New Orleans in her medical thrillers is present here too and we quickly feel at home in Richmond, as the tale unfolds.
The story is solid; the villains despicable, and the protagonists people you will instantly empathise with in this complex tale. Mic and Dottie find themselves in a race against the clock to save the life of the victims and you will find your heart thumping with excitement as the story barrels along to its finale. A superb read for all lovers of outstanding crime thrillers.

Another Winning Series!
Judith Lucci has done it again! She has created another great series filled with unique and interesting characters, great description and a complex plot with twists, turns and surprises. Michaela (Mic) McPherson is a retired homicide detective from Richmond, Virginia (Lucci’s home town) whose best friend is Dottie, an aging Italian Countess who, along with Mic’s ‘retired’ police dog, Angel, solve difficult crimes. As always, Lucci’s book is impeccably researched and peppered with suspense and intrigue. The trio in this book have attacked the global issue of human sex trafficking as Mic, Dottie and Angel tussle with an aberrant dentist, his crazed assistant and the Russian mob to rescue a young woman who disappeared after a job interview at Dr. Dude’s office.
Judith Lucci again has penned an amazing page-turner in the first book that is as.exciting and memorable as Alex Destephano medical thrillers. I cannot wait for the next Mic McPherson mystery.
