 Sacrifice
Author: Heather C. Myers
Genre: dark fantasy/mythology/forbidden love
Blurb:
What do you risk when you have nothing to lose?
Nothing, apparently, given that Keirah has no qualms showing up at Andie’s doorstep, asking Jack if she can borrow his resources in order to find Noir. If that’s all Andie has to worry about, she could handle her sister.
But it’s not.
Jack’s new business partner and former flame is interested in investing in Andie’s animal shelter, yet insists on Jack’s presence during their meetings. On top of that, her closest friend Reese shares a secret that all but blindsides her. And then there’s Lucas Burr, Onyx City’s persistent DA, who wants nothing more than the city’s incorruptible vigilante, Black Wing, rotting in a prison somewhere at the very least, and will do anything to get what he wants – including using Andie as bait.
In this thrilling conclusion of The Dark Paradise trilogy, the war between angels and demons is in full swing. Will Andie survive or will she be just another faceless casualty?

Full disclosure: I am an acquired taste. I’m a typical blonde Orange County suburbanite who says ‘like’ more than necessary, laughs loud and probably obnoxiously, and loves to dance in the rain. I’m a 26 year old college graduate with more than a few tricks up my sleeve, and I also happen to be a pretty big Ducks fan. Oh, and I’m a writer. Like, for real.

I recently signed with Anchor Group Publishing, which will see two of my series being published this year. I’ve self-published over 15 books, with more on the way, so I’m familiar with both a hybrid-traditional publishing method as well as self-publishing.

I don’t speak in third person (normally) nor do I wear glasses (except when I’m feeling particularly mischievous). I’m lucky to have found my soul mate at the ripe old age of 22, even though he frustrates me on purpose to get a reaction out of me. We live near Disneyland, have two rambunctious female puppies, and have a beautiful baby girl. He has two amazing boys, and has gotten me hooked on Smallville, watching soccer (okay, okay FOOTBALL – FC Barcelona, baby!), and Cancun Juice.

Sacrifice
Author: Brigid Kemmerer
Publisher: Kensington Teen
Genre: YA Fantasy
Format: Ebook/Paperback

One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time.

Michael Merrick is used to pressure.

He’s the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it out for his family, and he’s all that stands in the way.

His girlfriend, Hannah, gets that. She’s got a kid of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could end her life without a moment’s notice.

But there are people who have had enough of Michael’s defiance, his family’s “bad luck.” Before he knows it, Michael’s enemies have turned into the Merricks’ enemies, and they’re armed for war.

They’re not interested in surrender. But Michael isn’t the white flag type anyway. There will be blood on the ground tonight…

ORDER INFORMATION
Sacrifice is available for order at

Brigid Kemmerer was born in Omaha, Nebraska, though her parents quickly moved her all over the United States, from the desert in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the lakeside in Cleveland, Ohio, and several stops in between, eventually settling near Annapolis, Maryland. Brigid started writing in high school, and her first real “novel” was about four vampire brothers causing a ruckus in the suburbs. Those four brothers are the same boys living in the pages of The Elemental Series, so Brigid likes to say she’s had four teenage boys taking up space in her head for the last seventeen years. (Though sometimes that just makes her sound nuts.)

Brigid writes anywhere she can find a place to sit down (and she’s embarrassed to say a great many pages of The Elemental Series were written while sitting on the floor in the basement of a hotel while she was attending a writers’ conference). Most writers enjoy peace and quiet while writing, but Brigid prefers pandemonium. A good thing, considering she has three boys in the house, ranging in age from an infant to a teenager.

While writing STORM, it’s ironic to note that Brigid’s personal life was plagued by water problems: her basement flooded three times, her roof leaked, her kitchen faucet broke, causing the cabinet underneath to be destroyed by water, the wall in her son’s room had to be torn down because water had crept into the wall, and her bedroom wall recently developed a minor leak. Considering SPARK, book 2 in the series, is about the brother who controls fire, Brigid is currently making sure all the smoke detectors in her house have batteries.

Brigid loves hearing from people, and she probably won’t refer to herself in the third person like this if you actually correspond with her. She has a smartphone surgically attached to her person nearby at all times, and email is the best way to reach her. Her email address is brigidmary@gmail.com.

HONOR BOUND AWAKENINGS

MEDIA KIT Awakening Book Cover

X-Men meets the Real World. “This was an amazing book while steeped in fantasy it tackles a huge subject , the subject of human trafficking. Instead of a bland preachy PSA against it, this story uses amazing imagery, action, intensity, and heart to keep you reading well into the night.”

Children and teens with unique abilities are being sold on the black market. When twins John and Clara made a vow several years ago to help children that had abilities, they never thought they would be forced to fight hardened criminals. Honor Bound Awakenings shows the beginning of the journey they and their friends from idealism to reality and what sacrifices they will be forced to make to keep their vow.

EXCERPT

Honor Bound Awakenings

“Uh, people coming into my cell, ” her voice was shaky. “ They were going to hit me and I wanted to ….Oh no, I wanted to stab them. The second week I was there they left a small metal tray in my cell and I turned it into a knife. I hid it in my pants and I tried to stab them when they came back. I don’t know how to fight so they ripped it out of my hands and then made me watch as they beat Chad up. That’s when I tried to kill one of them by turning one of them into a stone. Humans have all the components in them to make rock. Then they broke Chad’s legs. I watched on a monitor. They wouldn’t let us near each other. I heard him screaming when they did it. Did I make a knife in my sleep?” This was just getting worse and worse.

“Well it’s not really a knife but here.” Jessie handed her the metal spike. “I’m guessing you shifted a bed spring and somehow got it to pop out of the mattress into your hand. I was trying to calm you, I put my hand on your leg and you tried to stab my hand. I guess I startled you. I moved my hand and you stabbed your leg. You shifted that much faster than the water bottle. Maybe because you were just changing the shape of something not the actual structure. I think we have a problem here.”

“How did I do this in my sleep? I don’t understand.” Sarah’s voice was rising in pitch, she was starting to crack. Jessie had to calm her down and she needed Sarah’s permission to help her. She was afraid of what may happen if she tried to force her to calm down.

Jessie had learned with the more powerful abilities if she tried to force too much of an emotional shift things got even further out of hand. Min-Ji had destroyed three trees with a gout of flame when Jessie had tried to calm her once. Since then she either let Cesco calm Min-Ji or asked permission.

Honor Bound Sacrifices

First priority was to try to forget everyone else’s emotions. She slowly started unraveling those in her mind, hellish pain and agony, that wasn’t her. She had developed a visualization to help her through things like this, she imagined all of the emotions that weren’t hers as clothes she was wearing and would slowly strip away the layers until she got down to just her own skin. It worked fairly well.

Layer after layer came off.  Eventually she cleared everything away so she only had her emotions left and could take inventory of her mental state. The storage facility office froze in her mind, blood on the floor, dismembered people, Min-Ji screaming and Cesco on the floor. As an empath she had learned how to face her own emotions along with manipulating and controlling others. She took a deep breath and allowed herself to relive the moment. Sheer panic and disgust hit her, her heart started to race and her stomach clenched again as she smelled the blood and charred flesh. How badly she had wanted to run the other way, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t at the time and she sure as hell wouldn’t now. Forcing herself to stand there, she allowed the whole scene to slam into her mind over and over until it no longer affected her.

Eventually she could look at it without her pulse skyrocketing so she moved to the next one, driving the car as John shot the people they were chasing. That wasn’t so bad, she and John were focused so their emotions weren’t out of control and the blood and gore was manageable for her to look at. The last one she didn’t want to face but she had to. Her view of Min-Ji coming out of the office and setting a person on fire, the emotions that Min-Ji had felt had been so intense. She and Min-Ji had bonded so often to keep Min-Ji stable that Jessie was starting to think it had almost become permanent. She picked up on even small shifts in Min-Ji’s emotions now without having to touch her.

INTERVIEW:

It is my pleasure to feature Kat Loveland, author of Honor Bound: Awakenings and Sacrifices, on Room With Books. Welcome to Room With Books, Kat. Who have you brought with you?

Hello, Patricia. Thank you so much for having me with you here at Room With Books. Although I think you may want to change the name to Books with a Little Bit of Room Left for More Books. Your collection is impressive. I brought along some of my friends to answer questions as well. This is Cesco, Jessie and Min-Ji, they allowed me to write about them in my series Honor Bound.

Welcome, Cesco, Jessie, and Min-Ji. Thank you for joining Kat for the interview!

Please tell us about Honor Bound and what inspired you to write it?

Honor Bound is really about their lives. These three plus John, Clara and Sarah are all a bit different, they have some rather unique abilities. The twins, John and Clara are so interconnected they are basically one person in two bodies. They share a mind and a soul and can feel what the other feels. Min-Ji controls fire and Jessie is an empath. Cesco and Sarah are gifted as well. The twins had a family history of dealing with runaways and have learned from that the children who are like them tend to be rejected by their families and friends. They originally set out to provide safe houses for runaways and children like them, they have since discovered that people have actually been kidnapping and selling gifted children on the Black Market, they and the rest are on a mission to stop that from happening.

I wrote this because I wanted to write something that had took a very realistic approach to having to adapt to being different and how that affects your life. I also love writing fight scenes and there is a great deal of action in my stories and I have loved paranormal/fantasy/sci fi stories my whole life. This is urban, current time paranormal and it really delves into each of their emotions and reasons for doing what they do.

When you start writing a new novel, do you outline the story or do your characters dictate what will happen?

When I outline I always seem to talk myself out of writing so I am a linear writer. The story develops as I go.

Do you ever have arguments with your characters and who usually wins?

I think Min-Ji should answer this one.

“You can’t control how you feel towards some people, Kat. Things happen and as much as you didn’t want to write in a romantic relationship he and I weren’t going to just sit by and let you ignore us.”

True, but I win most of them, I think. I am never really sure because when I start writing I very rarely dislike how the story is going.

What is something about you your readers would be surprised to know?

I didn’t start really writing until December of 2013. What triggered it was imagining some scenes of a Supernatural and Arrow (TV Shows) crossover, that spawned three novel length fanfictions and I pretty much haven’t stopped. Word count wise I have written about five novels since I started.

If you could write with any other author who would it be any why?

My usual answer would be Jim Butcher but I think Patricia Briggs would be fun too.

When you were little what did you dream of becoming when you grew up and why?

I never really had a dream, sad I know but I am one of those annoying people who can pick up just about anything and do it well. Except drawing and art, I can’t draw. It irritates me to no end.

What music inspires your writing?

Depends on what I am writing. I listen to everything from trance, to rock, to dubstep, to alternative, to random stuff no one has ever heard of.

Fun Facts:

I’ll let Cesco, Jessie and Min-Ji chime in on these as well.

What is your favorite breakfast?

Mine : Quiche. Cesco?

“Omlettes with lots of peppers, cheese and meat in them. Jessie?”

“Yogurt with fresh fruit and a really large cup of coffee. Min-Ji”

“Maki and those Scotch Eggs that John makes, I’ll second the coffee.”

What is your favorite color?

I like black and green, Jessie?

“Pinks, purples and a nice rose color. Cesco?”

“Green and earth tones. Min-Ji?”

“Red.”

What is your favorite movie?

“District B-13! With David Belle!”

Thanks Cesco, nice enthusiastic answer there. Mine varies, I think the LOTR series, Avengers and Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock will always hold special places in my heart. Jessie?

“Being John Malkovich. Min-Ji?”

“Natural Born Killers and Fight Club.”

What is your dream car?

Mine – I go back and forth between an 8 cyl Dodge Challenger and a ‘67 Impala when I am being especially fangirly. I would say if money was not an option in the least I would have to get a Tesla. Cesco?

“Who needs a car? I move almost as fast as they can in city streets and don’t have to deal with traffic.”

Good point. Jessie?

“I’d take a Tesla, the Roadster. Min-Ji?”

“Toyota Tacoma. Trucks are much more useful.”

AUTHOR INFORMATION

MEDIA KIT Author Photo 2 (2)

Who is Kat Loveland? Why does she write? Good questions. Complicated questions. Questions that make you say hmmmmmmm.

Kat is a person of great charm and grace, she lights up whatever room she walks into. Her stunning fashion sense mesmerizes all who see her. Witty rejoinders and endless amounts of relevant and thoroughly researched facts and tidbits flow effortlessly from her mouth.

Yeah, ok, not so much. I’ve got the witty rejoinders but not the fashion sense. I like comfy, simple clothes and sparring with weapons. I occasionally try my hand at archery and artistic photography, sometimes I’ll even hop a wall or vault a bench. I’m a tomboy at heart, what can I say.

Why do I write? My imaginary friends are endlessly entertaining and they always do whatever the hell I tell them to. Besides it’s fun to play Goddess, most authors won’t admit that but I’m pretty blunt. It’s fun to torture, harass, endlessly confound and every once in a while make a character a bit happy with life. Not too often though, that’s just silly.

My editor tells me and I quote : “Only a genius can write three books at the same time, work all the time and shoot arrows into the air and hope and pray what goes up does not come down on top of her.” Have I mentioned she’s an awesome editor?

Summer Rain Anthology, Love in the Rain Series

All proceeds from the volume will be donated to
the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (www.rainn.org), the largest
anti-sexual violence organization in the United States.

Synopsis

What happens when love gets caught in the rain?
In this romance anthology, RITA-Award winning author Molly
O’Keefe shows us the power of a city thunderstorm from the top of a skyscraper,
while Amy Jo Cousins soaks us in a rain in Spain. New York Times bestselling
author Ruthie Knox’s heroine is devastated by a winter storm, while a summer
thunderstorm grants Alexandra Haughton’s hero and heroine a second chance at
love. Rain sparks self-awareness in the robot in Charlotte Stein’s story and
allows Mary Ann Rivers’s heroine to fall in love with her hero and her own art.
Rain causes romance between the college students in Audra North’s and Shari
Slade’s stories, while romance causes rain in Cecilia Tan’s myth-inspired tale
of a sacrifice to a demi-god. Nine romance novelettes, edited by Sarah Frantz.

 Behind the Book
Summer Rain, like so many projects, started out as nothing
more than a simple feeling: a desire to make a positive difference in the
world. So often, making a difference begins with giving something. It might be
money, time, or both, or something else altogether…but most importantly, it is
about giving, and giving vibrantly—with a focused mind, a full heart, and an
understanding spirit.
Giving vibrantly leads to vibrant change. Powerful, positive
change. Through the incredible generosity of eight other talented authors and
one talented editor, that starting point—that desire to make a positive
difference—turned into an act of vibrant giving. Summer Rain is a collection of
powerful stories about love, written with the hope of making a positive change.
Each year, nearly a quarter of a million sexual assaults are
committed in the US, nearly half of them against victims under the age of
eighteen. RAINN assists so many of these survivors, not only by operating
telephone and online hotlines for victims of sexual abuse, but also by working
in partnership with rape crisis centers in the United States of America,
providing programs to prevent sexual abuse, and helping to bring abusers to
justice.

About the Works

Redemption
by Ruthie Knox
Jessie Bellin’s cheese shop is failing, her house is falling apart,
and the mortgage is ninety days overdue. With nothing left to offer, she’ll
take what she can get from the handyman who wants nothing but her body. But
when Mike Kaminsky suddenly asks for more, Jessie has to figure out exactly
what she wants—and if it’s possible for a woman who’s lost everything to learn
how to hope again.
The Heart of It
by Molly O’Keefe
Gabe seems outwardly successful and
content, but inwardly, he struggles to banish the lingering demons of his
childhood. Elena is a survivor herself and knows that the smart move is to walk
away from Gabe. But his pain and his hope are too compelling to resist.
Are these two wounded people brave
enough to find love together?
Sacrifice
by Cecilia Tan
When a tenth century trader from the
Orient sells his daughter to a Macedonian, he doesn’t ask why the man needs a
virgin, little knowing she is intended to fulfill an ancient pact with a
demigod who can end the crushing drought. But this demigod has sworn off his
father’s rapacious ways. With the influence of the ancient pantheon waning,
only love can heal them all.
Real Feelings
by Charlotte Stein
Moira longs for a connection—any
kind of connection with anyone—and is beginning to despair she will ever find
it. In desperation, she purchases an android, hoping against hope that she can
find some solace in a simulation of the real thing. But what she doesn’t expect
is Michael—a machine that seems to be more than the sum of his parts.
Rainy Season
by Mary Ann Rivers
Lisa Shirek is everyone’s favorite
barista. She does more than get her customers’ orders right: she gets her customers. She can see the most
painful moments of their lives like stormy weather around their bodies, and she
does what she can to soothe that pain with the right smile, the right words,
the perfect combination of coffee and foam. Except, then, there’s Mark—he’s a
sunbeam, a mystery made of light. He breaks through the storm around her so she
can see herself, for herself.
The Rain in Spain
by Amy Jo Cousins
Travel writer Magda and scientist
Javi are cranky with the heat—and each other—on the streets of Sevilla. They’ve
been married for a year, after a whirlwind courtship, and Magda is questioning
whether or not she made a mistake. She’s not sure if her need to explore the
world can ever mesh with Javi’s more regimented life.
As they stroll the cobblestone
streets of one of Spain’s most romantic cities, Magda tries to show her husband
just what it is she loves so much about her job that keeps her far from home
for so long. By the time the sun rises, they’ll know if there is a way forward
for them together . . . or not.
Fitting In
by Audra North
Stas Petrovich is sure that being
elected president of his college class will grant him the social acceptance he
craves. But when rain ruins his campaign event, he’s left in the company of the
Weird Girl, the one person guaranteed to jeopardize his chances. But he
discovers that Leila dos Santos is fun and genuine and sexy as hell, and he’s
forced to reconsider what’s most important to him.
Private Study
by Shari Slade
Tess Bell’s sex vlog flashes on
another student’s tablet screen in the middle of an economics lecture. Worst of
all, the guy she’s been secretly eyeing all semester sees it, too, and asks her
out for coffee at the local diner. Is he like their awful classmate, convinced
he’s owed something because Tess dares to be curious about sex, or does he
really want to know her? Only one thing is certain: nothing is private
anymore.
Storm Warning
by Alexandra Haughton
When Amy Collier left behind her
dreams—and her pride—in L.A., she hoped for a few quiet months to regroup. She
never dreamed her hometown’s welcoming committee would take the form of Tom
Wilson. Well, he could just keep his I-told-you-so grin and his sexy-cowboy
charm; she doesn’t want any part of it.
Except seeing him again stirs up a
storm of emotion, and she must try to reconcile bitter memories of their past
with her uncertain future—a future that might be a whole lot brighter with Tom
in it.
