About the Book

Half-Life bassist Krist Mellas is caught in a PR nightmare after his dirty sex video blew up online. His agent has the solution: a fake engagement with sultry pop princess Madeline Fox. Krist can’t think of anything worse than a charade with the bubblegum bombshell…except losing the band.

Madeline knows better than anyone what it means to live a lie in the spotlight. She’s determined to help Krist without ever letting him find out what it costs her—or about her girlhood crush on him. But after a smoking hot back alley encounter with him leaves her breathless, she can’t deny she wants the snarling bad-boy rocker.

In a world of glitter and diamonds where the kisses are fake but the climaxes are real, their facades start to crack. And the publicity storm may shatter them both.

WARNING: This book contains a scorching threesome, a dirty talking pop princess, and a surly rocker who hits all the right notes.

Excerpt

There was a moment, after the makeup artist and hair stylist had gone, before the choreographer and director had arrived, that Madeline was alone. The silence disoriented her, making her pulse heavy.

It was like stepping off a carousel, unsteady on her feet and squinting into the sun. Though in her case, she was unsteady on four-inch heels and blinking at fashion lights lining the wall. Her short puffs of breath expanded to fill the empty dressing room. Every piece of clothing that had been specially crafted and fitted to her body suddenly tugged and scratched and pinched.

The door slammed open—no knock—and her choreographer stood there. Just like that, the off-kilter moment was over, banished to the Island of Misfit Memories. She was Madeline Fox again, back in her groove. Adequate singer. Dazzling performer. She was a goddamn pop princess—and princesses never had to be alone.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Jimmy said in his customary affected voice. “You look fabulous.”

Doing a little circle to show off her costume, she preened. Literally preened since she had feathers glued onto her arms. “Are you sure I don’t look a little…avian?”

“Please. No one will be looking at your arms in that glitter bra. Every boy in the audience will have a hard-on the size of Texas.”

Madeline rolled her eyes. Jimmy had been saying that to her since she was fifteen. He got away with it because he pretended to be gay. A requirement for being successful in this business, or so he’d told her in a rare moment of seriousness.

“Come on, sweetie. Your devil awaits you.”

She clapped her hands together, barely holding in her squee. She hadn’t been sure Krist would come. Even though he owed her. Even though she’d sent their mutual agent to ensure that extra push. “Ward came through for me?”

Right on cue, Ward entered stage right. Alex Ward had a man’s name and the personality of a shark. In short, she was the perfect agent. “I always come through for you. You’re the best, and you deserve the best.”

“Aww, I bet you say that to all the multiplatinum artists.”

Ward didn’t deny it. But then, she might not have heard. She was currently speaking into her Bluetooth while tapping the tablet propped over her arm.

The important thing was Madeline would get to see Krist today. She’d get to kiss him. And now she was nervous.

She was never nervous.

The spicy scent of warm chai hit her like an orgasm. “Fuuuuck. Someone is about to be my best friend.”

A latte cup was lifted from behind Jimmy’s head. Her assistant. God bless assistants, really. Especially this one, who’d brought her chai. Piper? Penelope? Was it a boy or a girl? Not that it mattered. Madeline swung both ways.

But before she could grab hold of the cup, her voice coach was there with her endless litany of rules and regulations. No smoking. No drinking. No deep throating. Blah blah blah. And definitely no chai before a performance.

“Hey,” Madeline said, pouting. “I’m not even going to be singing.”

Her agent glanced over. “Oh, we changed that. We want some vocals off the main track for a director’s cut. That one’s going on YouTube.”

Jimmy winked. “A little improv goes a long way.”

All righty, so she would sing. In front of Krist Mellas, bass player and vocalist for Half-Life. Her stomach turned over as she grabbed the chai and took a drink. It wasn’t spiked, so the assistant whoever-the-fuck was clearly still in training mode. Big girls got a shot with their latte, and Madeline had been a big girl since she turned fourteen on the set of KidMania five years ago.

The sea of people pushed her along.

No one specifically told her to move. No one asked. They just moved, and she had no choice but to move with them. She didn’t want a choice. This was easy. This was mindless. Swivel your hips and sing until it hurts.

This was her life.

Summer Rain Anthology, Love in the Rain Series

All proceeds from the volume will be donated to
the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (www.rainn.org), the largest
anti-sexual violence organization in the United States.

Synopsis

What happens when love gets caught in the rain?
In this romance anthology, RITA-Award winning author Molly
O’Keefe shows us the power of a city thunderstorm from the top of a skyscraper,
while Amy Jo Cousins soaks us in a rain in Spain. New York Times bestselling
author Ruthie Knox’s heroine is devastated by a winter storm, while a summer
thunderstorm grants Alexandra Haughton’s hero and heroine a second chance at
love. Rain sparks self-awareness in the robot in Charlotte Stein’s story and
allows Mary Ann Rivers’s heroine to fall in love with her hero and her own art.
Rain causes romance between the college students in Audra North’s and Shari
Slade’s stories, while romance causes rain in Cecilia Tan’s myth-inspired tale
of a sacrifice to a demi-god. Nine romance novelettes, edited by Sarah Frantz.

 Behind the Book
Summer Rain, like so many projects, started out as nothing
more than a simple feeling: a desire to make a positive difference in the
world. So often, making a difference begins with giving something. It might be
money, time, or both, or something else altogether…but most importantly, it is
about giving, and giving vibrantly—with a focused mind, a full heart, and an
understanding spirit.
Giving vibrantly leads to vibrant change. Powerful, positive
change. Through the incredible generosity of eight other talented authors and
one talented editor, that starting point—that desire to make a positive
difference—turned into an act of vibrant giving. Summer Rain is a collection of
powerful stories about love, written with the hope of making a positive change.
Each year, nearly a quarter of a million sexual assaults are
committed in the US, nearly half of them against victims under the age of
eighteen. RAINN assists so many of these survivors, not only by operating
telephone and online hotlines for victims of sexual abuse, but also by working
in partnership with rape crisis centers in the United States of America,
providing programs to prevent sexual abuse, and helping to bring abusers to
justice.

sunbeam, a mystery made of light. He breaks through the storm around her so she
can see herself, for herself.
The Rain in Spain

streets of one of Spain’s most romantic cities, Magda tries to show her husband
just what it is she loves so much about her job that keeps her far from home
for so long. By the time the sun rises, they’ll know if there is a way forward
for them together . . . or not.
Fitting In
by Audra North
Stas Petrovich is sure that being
elected president of his college class will grant him the social acceptance he
craves. But when rain ruins his campaign event, he’s left in the company of the
Weird Girl, the one person guaranteed to jeopardize his chances. But he
discovers that Leila dos Santos is fun and genuine and sexy as hell, and he’s
forced to reconsider what’s most important to him.
Private Study
by Shari Slade
Tess Bell’s sex vlog flashes on
another student’s tablet screen in the middle of an economics lecture. Worst of
all, the guy she’s been secretly eyeing all semester sees it, too, and asks her
out for coffee at the local diner. Is he like their awful classmate, convinced
he’s owed something because Tess dares to be curious about sex, or does he
really want to know her? Only one thing is certain: nothing is private
anymore.
Storm Warning
by Alexandra Haughton
When Amy Collier left behind her
dreams—and her pride—in L.A., she hoped for a few quiet months to regroup. She
never dreamed her hometown’s welcoming committee would take the form of Tom
Wilson. Well, he could just keep his I-told-you-so grin and his sexy-cowboy
charm; she doesn’t want any part of it.
Except seeing him again stirs up a
storm of emotion, and she must try to reconcile bitter memories of their past
with her uncertain future—a future that might be a whole lot brighter with Tom
in it.

Excerpt:

Lock managed not to jump the sexy little Sunday school teacher the second her pen left the paper. Her hand had been shaking as she’d signed, and she wasn’t ready for sex. At least not the way he did sex. So he showed her into the restroom and let her freshen up. Meanwhile he conferred with the concierge to get her bag brought up and her car moved to a VIP spot.

When she emerged from the bathroom, he knew she was ready. He knew by the fresh lipstick on her full lips and the resolved set of her chin. But most of all he knew because of the flicker of curiosity in her eyes. Under the fear, she wanted to know what came next.

He crooked his finger and beckoned her to him.

Her breathing was shallow, her cheeks flushed, and she kept running her fingers through her hair, touching herself. That long blonde hair cascaded around her face in a messy tumble. Bed head, and they hadn’t been anywhere near a bed. Wouldn’t be near one anytime soon if he had his way. Which he would. This was his show.

She tugged the hem of her short skirt so it covered a sliver more thigh, drew her shoulders back, and crossed the room, steady on her bare feet. She should be plucking daisies, not padding across the plush carpet of his penthouse suite. “Your wish is my command.”

No more preamble. If she was really going to do this, he’d know now for sure. “I’m going to fuck you against that window over there, and I’m not going to be nice about it. Do you like to hurt, Hailey?”

Her name was a weapon on his lips. A sharp thing he could use to lash her. Every time he said it, he watched her tense. This time she wobbled, her answering nod barely perceptible, her coltish legs giving way under the weight of his regard. And he liked it.

She wanted this thrill, and at the moment finding her sister’s baby daddy didn’t have much to do with it. Her eyes held wariness and guilt—but most of all, excitement. As if his proposition had jolted her awake. More awake than she’d ever been in her drowsy little East Podunk life, he’d lay money on it.

He’d woken up on stage like that, the whiskey haze parting long enough for fear to creep in, adrenaline spiking into his bloodstream as he fumbled for an instant and then…click. Everything slipping into its proper place. The music. The band. The crowd. All of it more alive, more real, brighter and sharper because he’d come so close to disaster.

Do you like to hurt, Hailey? He’d asked her, and she could only nod.

He’d hurt her so good she’d give voice to that desire before he was through. She knew it. He knew it. The subtext breathed in the air around them, a living thing, that damned contract come to life. She wants this. She wants the lurid celeb fantasy. The shock, the pulse-pounding vibrancy that only exists on the edge of a bad decision.

He’d take her there.

“Take off your clothes,” he said, a little too harshly, his urgency coming out as hard-edged gruffness.

It didn’t scare her away. She wants that too. She fingered the button of her cardigan, uncertain, and then popped them all in a rush, exposing a silver tank that dipped low over her cleavage. Fuck. Surprisingly lush curves on her willowy frame, and smooth, pale skin.

He shifted in his seat, imagining his cock between her breasts. Making them slick, squeezing them together, and thrusting, thrusting, thrusting until he came all over her neck. Jesus, he hadn’t even seen them yet. She put a hand to her throat as if she could read his mind. As if every dirty thought he’d ever had was flashing on his face. And she knew. Why was she taking so fucking long to undress?
