Excerpt

“I got this,” Dante yells to me. “Work the plan, Kenna.”

I nod and leave him to deal with Rebel.

As much as I want to free my mom first—family instinct is begging me to save her—I don’t know what her power is, don’t know if she can help us. At least I know what Draven’s powers can do. And right now, we need all the help we can get.

Nitro is standing on top of the table, right above Rex’s seat, lobbing small, white fireballs in a never-ending stream. He has the entire stage basically surrounded, with most of the Collective cowering behind a wall of white-hot flame.

Riley has a couple of the others and two more guards tied to the track lighting in the ceiling and is going after a guard who is shooting potassium bicarbonate all over Nitro’s firewall.

So, in other words, all is going according to plan. Thank God.

Draven is struggling against his shackles, which are secured to a giant loop in the stage floor. I want so much to pull him close and physically assure myself that he’s fine, but there isn’t time for that.

Instead, I move behind him and find the latch on the powers-neutralizing helmet. An instant later, I yank it off and toss it across the room. It’s useless now, thanks to my circuit-destroying EMP.

“What the hell are you doing here?” Draven demands.

Does he really have to ask?

I flash him a more-confident-than-I-feel smile. “Saving your ass. As usual.”

He gives me the cocky half smile I’ve come to love, and that more than anything else makes me believe that things will turn out okay.

“Kenna!”

I turn at Riley’s shout, just in time to see Mr. Malone break through Nitro’s firewall. Right behind me.

I freeze. This is the first time I’ve been face-to-face with Mr. Malone since I found out all the terrible things he’s done.

Since I found out he tortures decent people for reasons I can’t even begin to fathom.

Since I found out the word hero was a big, fat lie and they aren’t the good guys after all.

Rage overtakes me and I lunge for him, forgetting the plan, forgetting everything but the need to make him hurt as he’s hurt so many of the people I care about. In a flash, Rex’s hands are around my throat. I’m completely immobilized, lifted to my toes and barely able to breathe.

Draven is enraged as he turns on Rex—his father—and shouts, “You’re not going to touch her!”

“Who’s going to stop me?” Rex sneers. “You?”

An instant later, he releases me and drops to his knees, howling in pain as Draven uses his biomanipulation to do God knows what to Mr. Malone.

I draw in gasping breaths, relieved at the oxygen now flooding my bloodstream.

“Never go near her again,” Draven snarls, ramping up his biomanipulation grip on his father.

I lay my hand on Draven’s arm. We aren’t here to kill Rex, and the last thing we need is anyone in this room learning that Draven has a second power.

His muscles relax beneath my palm, and so do mine. Just this brief contact with him is enough to center me even in the middle of all this chaos.

Rex collapses into a lump.

Draven snorts with disgust as he stands over his father’s prone body.

The faint thump-thump-thump of an approaching helicopter jolts me back into action. We have to move, now, before reinforcements show up and eliminate our escape plan.

The woman tensed. As anger and fear ricocheted across her face, her eyes changed from red to green to brown in a dizzying display like nothing he’d ever seen.

Every instinct in Angelo’s body screamed at him to lunge for his weapon. Instead he set his feet for impact, blocking her slashing claws. Unbelievably, after a few moments of struggling, she went still, all the fight gone…

Minka isn’t sure she should trust the sexy Special Forces soldier who found her. Subjected to horrors, on the run from scientists set on locking her in a cage, Minka is terrified of the monster she’s becoming…and somehow, Angelo is the only one who can calm the beast inside her and make her feel safe.

But can she trust the way he makes her feel when she’s not even sure she can trust herself?

Exclusive Guest Post

What was the most difficult scene to write for Her Fierce Warrior (emotionally or otherwise)? Please share a snippet.

This scene is near the end of the book, as Minka tries to imagine how she can handle making it work with a soldier who’s deployed away from home far more than he’s ever there. It’s not just that she’s in love with him. He is literally her anchor, the one sure thing in the world that helps keep the beast inside her at bay. She seriously isn’t sure she can survive without him.

Being married to a soldier (thankfully retired now), I could relate in some small way to Minka. I lived in constant fear of those times when he had to be away. Back then, I would find myself scanning his face every time he had to work late. Was he just doing some training that ran long, or had they been working up plans for a deployment he didn’t want to tell me about? After a while, it was like I couldn’t get a breath because I could never exhale. So the scene below was tough for me to write—it had me crying like a baby.

Snippet

Minka tried hard to hold back tears as she boarded the Osprey with Angelo. They found two seats in the back. It was as close to privacy as they could get on the small aircraft. Everyone must have known they needed some time together because they all sat up front. The thump of the rotors made talking almost impossible, but there wasn’t really anything to say anyway. Mostly because she and Angelo had said what they needed to while the crew had prepared the aircraft for takeoff.

“When we get to Bagram, I’m going to have to go with my team,” Angelo had said. “But I’ll be coming off this deployment in a month or two. I have a lot of leave time saved up, and I’m going to spend every minute of it with you. If you want me to, I mean.”

“Of course I want you to,” she’d said, but on the inside, she didn’t know how it was going to work. She couldn’t imagine living without Angelo by her side, but that simply was not a possibility. Angelo wasn’t only a soldier; he was Special Forces, which meant he deployed—a lot.

So she’d nodded as he talked about his current enlistment and possible options after that, like getting out of the army. But those things would be years from now, and with the way her heart was breaking at the thought of being separated from him for just a few weeks, it all seemed so far away.

But she put up a good front because that was what she knew Angelo needed.

Minka leaned her head against his shoulder as the aircraft took off. She was tired and her eyes felt heavy. The physical fighting, as well as the internal fight she’d had with the beast, had taken a lot out of her. But she didn’t want to waste this time with Angelo sleeping. So she held his hand and stayed awake the whole trip back. And if she let out a few tears, she made sure he didn’t see them.

Book Review

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Her Fierce Warrior by Paige Tyler from the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.

Her Fierce Warrior is the fourth book in the X-Ops Series by Ms. Tyler and I haven’t, as yet, read the previous books in the series.  This put me at a distinct disadvantage in knowing the back story and the other characters encountered in Her Fierce Warrior, but not enough so that I was willing to put it down at any point.

Ms. Tyler introduces action from beginning and it rarely stops until the last page. With so much going on, it didn’t take me long to grasp the basics of this series and make myself comfortable with the cast of characters.

In addition to the main focus of Angelo and Minka, the stories from previous books appear to be moving forward and a very nice lead to the next was left in place.

As much as I dislike cliffhangers, knowing that I have reading to make up and Book 5 also waiting made the ending of this book much easier for me to swallow.

Ms. Tyler is definitely high on my list of authors to follow and one whose backlist will be keeping me entertained for quite some time to come!

I absolutely recommend you pick up Her Fierce Warrior by Paige Tyler and the rest of the X-Ops Series and hang on for the ride!

I give Her Fierce Warrior five steaming hot cups of Room With Books coffee!

Where is Your (Least) Favorite Place to Write

If you ask a million writers where their favorite place to write is, I bet at least 900,000 will say “at home, while wearing pajamas.” I am one of those 900,000. (Seriously: Home. Pajamas. It’s great.) So, I don’t have any new insights there. But! I can tell you about my LEAST favorite places to write. All of these are actual genuine true attempts that I really tried. Really.

  1. In the passenger seat of a car, with a baby and a young child in the back seat, when both of them are cranky. The young child was mine. The baby was my brother’s. He was driving. I was writing a synopsis. You can probably guess my level of success.
  2. In a coffee shop, when there’s one other person there and he’s loudly practicing a language tape. It’s great to learn a new language. It’s less great to do so in a public setting without earbuds in. Incredibly, I did manage a thousand words in my manuscript, though I think my characters were grumpy and puzzled in that scene.
  3. At home, while wearing pajamas, when my husband is home sick. I realize this makes me a terrible person. Mr. R is really healthy and hardly ever takes a sick day, which might be why when he DOES get sick, he is really loud and tragic.*

I’m sorry. I told you I was a terrible person.

  1. At the home of one of my out-of-state relatives, when everyone else is eating snacks and playing cards. Both snacks and cards are Serious Business for my relatives, but in a fun way. If you’re playing cards, you need to have pie or cookies or, at the very least, a cheese plate with a bowl of candy on the side. Knowing this is going on when I’m shut away trying to work on a story…well, I feel like I’m missing out on life.

I guess it’s all about balance, fitting a fictional world into a real one. I don’t always do that very well, as this list proves! But when the book is done, all the places to write—favorite and unfavorite, difficult and pleasant—are totally worth it for the chance to get a new story into readers’ hands. I hope you’ll enjoy reading A Gentleman’s Game!

*He just read this and said, “I am not.” Dutifully reported.

In Book One of Romance of the Turf, a refreshing new Regency series from rising star Theresa Romain, a mystery demanding to be solved brings unlikely allies together in more ways than one…

How far will a man go

Talented but troubled, the Chandler family seems cursed by bad luck—and so Nathaniel Chandler has learned to trade on his charm. He can broker a deal with anyone from a turf-mad English noble to an Irish horse breeder. But Nathaniel’s skills are tested when his stable of trained Thoroughbreds become suspiciously ill just before the Epsom Derby, and he begins to suspect his father’s new secretary is not as innocent as she seems.

To win a woman’s secretive heart?

Nathaniel would be very surprised if he knew why Rosalind Agate was really helping his family in their quest for a Derby victory. But for the sake of both their livelihoods, Rosalind and Nathaniel must set aside their suspicions. As Derby Day draws near, her wit and his charm make for a successful investigative team…and light the fires of growing desire. But Rosalind’s life is built on secrets and Nathaniel’s on charisma, and neither defense will serve them once they lose their hearts…

Historical romance author Theresa Romain pursued an impractical education that allowed her to read everything she could get her hands on. She then worked for universities and libraries, where she got to read even more. Eventually she started writing, too. She lives with her family in the Midwest.

Reaching across the table, Zach took one of Gabriella’s hands in his and just marveled at how soft it was. He always wondered what her skin felt like and now that he knew, he wanted to feel more. “Don’t leave me. Please.”

Her blue eyes filled with tears and she used her free hand to quickly wipe them away before they fell and then studied their hands on the table. “Zach,” she said softly, “we’ve been over this.”

“I know, I know,” he replied just as softly. “I need another chance, Gabriella. I need a chance to make things right.” He looked up, his gaze meeting hers. “I need you.”

Deciding to be bold, he turned her hand over and twined their fingers together and gently squeezed. He was surprised she didn’t pull away and thought maybe—just maybe—they were making progress. “I know I can’t erase the things I’ve said and done, but if you’ll give me one more chance, Gabs, I promise not to screw up. If I do anything to upset you, you can walk away. Hell, you can slap me in the face, kick me in the shin or throw something heavy at me and I’ll take it. I just…I can’t do this without you.”

Her eyes never left their joined hands.

“I don’t want to do this without you,” he said quietly.

“I’m afraid to…believe you.” He barely heard her words, they were uttered so softly.

Everything inside of him clenched with pain. His always confident, ever-efficient assistant was now distrusting and uncertain—because of him. “I don’t know what to say to make you believe me. Tell me. Tell me what I need to do. Anything. Anything you need from me to gain your confidence, and I’ll do it.”

She looked up at him. “It’s not that easy. Every day I walked into the office, I gave you another chance. Every time you berated me or made me feel like I screwed up and I came back, I gave you another chance. From my standpoint, you’ve had two years’ worth of second chances. I think I’ve been more than generous.”

His other hand reached out to cup her hand in both of his. “I know you have and you have no idea how much I appreciated it.” She looked at him with disbelief. “It’s true! I know I never said it but every morning you were there, I was thankful. Every time you walked into my office, I was thankful. Please. I’m begging here, Gabs.”

Writing Realistic Children Characters

Every reader who picks up a romance novel was once a child and knows children. They might have children, grandchildren, or even great-grandchildren. The many, many children expected by the end of romance novels are said to symbolize the wholeness and potential of people who have redeemed their wounds, and earned their happily ever afters. All very true…

For me, including children in a romance novel is just plain fun. Little people have a way of winning our hearts without trying, and rightly so. As a child welfare attorney, I’m convinced the basic nature of the child is kind and honest, and these are the qualities of a hero or heroine by the end of the book. It’s as if the child characters can say to the adults, “You’re trying to figure out what it is that you’ve misplaced, or what’s been taken from you. I can help you solve that riddle but you have to share that biscuit with me first.”

Children also bring out our protective instincts, and a hero or heroine who won’t let anybody get past his or her defenses, who trusts nobody, not never, not no how, will go out of their way to keep a child safe. I had great fun in the first scene of Once Upon a Tartan, when my imperious, charm-free, downright sneaky (at first) English lord of a hero came upon not simply a damsel in distress, but a very young damsel. Had to cancel all of his self-important plans, did our hero, and while he wasn’t gracious about it, he hero’d up despite himself.

The children in Daniel’s True Desire are all boys, all the time. Like many rural vicars, Daniel Banks is expected to prepare the sons of the local gentry for public (boarding) school. Daniel will earn extra coin with his tutoring, get to know some of his parishioners, stay busy, and find himself in the hands of the very best teachers when it comes to how to woo the fair maid. More significantly, through the eyes of the children in his care, Daniel gets to re-evaluate his own upbringing.

As Daniel becomes a role model for the boys, he can finally make sense of some of the sentiments his own curmudgeonly father expressed long ago. Better still, Daniel can forgive himself, and his father, for decisions made out of rebellion on Daniel’s part, or out of paternal fear that came off sounding judgmental, harsh, and narrow-minded on his father’s.

Children are such a rich source of insight, warmth, humor, and surprises that I love to include them in my romances. Readers apparently love reading a well written child character too… though I’m not sure about all those toads the boys caught. Lady Kirsten was fine with them, but we’ll see what the readers think!

Featuring

Tips for Getting a SEAL’s Attention

by Julie Ann Walker

Hi everyone!  My name is Julie Ann Walker and I’m totally stoked to be here today introducing my new romantic suspense series, Deep Six!  The series follows the story of six newly retired Navy SEALs who just can’t seem to shake their past and the Navy SEAL motto that “the only easy day was yesterday.”  Set in the Florida Keys, the books are chock-a-block full of all the good things.  Sun and sand.  Danger and intrigue.  Oh… and plenty of shirtless alpha hunks!

What’s not to love, am I right?  And who doesn’t want their very own Navy SEAL?  Well, I’m here to give you two surefire ways to snag one.  As well as give you examples of how Olivia, the heroine in my first book, HELL OR HIGH WATER, got the attention of her very on SEAL badass, Leo “The Lion” Anderson.

TIP #1: Be courageous!  A kickass Navy SEAL needs a woman brave enough to hold her own in any situation…

Leo held out the AK by its strap. “You know how to shoot this?”

“Oh, now you’re ready to let me help?” She took the weapon at the same time she grabbed on to the stainless-steel ladder attached to the Black Gold’s swim deck.

“Actually, I was sort of hopin’ you’d be willin’ to hang back here while I went up to see what’s what,” he admitted.

“Not on your life,” she told him.

“I reckoned as much,” he said with a wry grin, though there was something…more in his expression.

And then before he hauled himself out of the sea and onto the swim deck, he kissed her. Just a quick peck on the lips. But it was enough to make her heart take flight.

TIP #2: Be brazen!  A bold, brave Navy SEAL doesn’t have time to deal with a demure, indecisive woman.  He needs a woman who know what she wants — in and out of the bedroom — and isn’t afraid to ask for it…

“God, Olivia,” he moaned, tilting her jaw to better align their lips. “Every time I get my mouth on you, I want to gobble you up.”

She shivered at the unabashed longing in his tone. And for the life of her, she couldn’t think of one good reason why he shouldn’t do exactly that. Being eaten alive had never sounded so good.

“I like this plan of yours,” she whispered, sliding her hands up over his shoulders and delighting in the feel of his muscles flexing beneath her questing fingers. His neck was warm against her palms in the second before she speared her hands into his hair. “If you’re going to gobble me up, do you want to add a topping?” she husked between deep, mind-numbing kisses. “Whipped cream? Or, oh!” He did something then with his tongue that had her bare toes curling against her flip-flops. “Or maybe a cherry?” she finished with a throaty laugh.

“I don’t need any toppings,” he assured her, kissing the side of her mouth and rubbing his lips and whiskers along her cheek until he stopped at her ear. The feel of his hot, moist breath against the sensitive shell nearly had her eyes crossing. “You taste absolutely perfect all on your own.”

About “Torn”

If not for Sadie Keaton, Joe Dawson’s best friend since childhood and the woman he’s been in love with for as long as he can remember, he can’t imagine where he’d be. For the past year, Joe’s been struggling with PTSD after returning home from Afghanistan with the wounds that have left him scarred—both inside and out, and Sadie’s unwavering faith and support has been all that’s kept him going. But when they finally share an unexpected moment of passion, Joe has a hard time believing that Sadie could have feelings for the damaged man he has become and worries that her heart is being ruled by pity and not love. And those doubts are only compounded now that he’s set to resume his duty as a deputy sheriff. But when Sadie starts receiving messages from a secret admirer, messages that grow increasingly frightening and threatening, Joe has to put aside his self-doubt in order to save Sadie from her stalker and put an end to the bastard’s dangerous game before it’s too late to confess the truth of his heart.

Kate SeRine’s “Torn”

from Way of the Warrior

There’d been a few times over the years that they’d come close to kissing again. When Joe had held her in his arms while Sadie cried from a recent broken heart after some idiot had dumped her, when she’d comforted him after his mother’s death, before he’d left for Afghanistan, and they’d clung to each other, the thought of being parted again too difficult to even put into words. But they’d always held back, afraid that giving in would ruin their friendship.

But this time… Something had changed. There was something more, a longing that was impossible to deny.

He slowly slid his hand around to the small of her back, pressing ever so slightly, bringing her just a little closer. He could feel her breath quicken, saw her eyes dilate, growing darker. And to his astonishment, her lids drifted shut.

For a split second he hesitated, their mouths so close the heat of their breath intermingled. But only for an instant. When his lips brushed hers in a tender, lingering kiss, it sent a shot of electricity through every nerve ending in his body. Had he not been drenched in sweat from his run, he would’ve dragged her against him and finally explored the mystery of those full lips in the way he’d longed to, but knowing she was on her way to work, he had to content himself with gently grasping the nape of her neck, sliding his fingers into the length of the silky chestnut brown hair that fell below her shoulders, and kissing her slowly, languidly, savoring the warmth of her lips as they sought his.

A tiny moan escaped her, buzzing against his lips. Encouraged, he deepened the kiss, his tongue sweeping across the seam of her mouth. It was all he could do not to whoop for joy when her lips parted, inviting him in.

Sadie’s hands rested lightly against his chest, her palms a welcome warmth against his already heated skin. He took a half step closer but quickly stepped back when his raging erection threatened to give away just how badly he wanted her. “Ah, God, Sadie,” he murmured when her hands began to roam.

“I know,” she replied, her voice strained, breathless as she pressed kisses to the corner of his mouth, jaw, chin. “I know.”

Excerpt

It was near midnight and Selena’s eyes felt heavy. With her head resting on James’s shoulder, she tried to focus on the ending of ThePhiladelphia Story. Back when they were dating, they used to enjoy watching classic movies, and finding one on the television seemed like the perfect way for them to relax after such an emotional evening.

James looked over at Selena and smiled to himself. If he could freeze this moment in time, he would. For years he had wondered if he’d ever find a woman he could come home to, with whom he could sit like this and simply relax. The woman half-asleep beside him was the only woman he wanted to fit that bill. The credits were beginning to roll, and he gently nudged her with his shoulder. “Hey,” he said softly, “are you still awake?”

“Mmm…barely,” she whispered and then yawned. As much as Selena knew that the bed would be a far more comfortable place to sleep, she didn’t want to leave the security of James’s side. She jumped when he shifted beside her to stand up. A wave of panic hit her as she prayed that he wasn’t getting up to leave. Before she could even voice her concern, James turned off the television and then scooped her up into his arms. “Oh!”

“Don’t get me wrong. I was completely enjoying being curled up with you on the sofa, but I had a feeling your neck was going to kill you tomorrow.” He walked through to the bedroom and carefully held her close as he pulled back the comforter and gently placed Selena down. Without a word, he walked back out to the living room and locked the door and turned out the lights before returning to her.

He didn’t ask permission.

She didn’t extend an invitation.

Neither seemed necessary.

Author Biography

Samantha Chase

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan’s Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40’s to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she’s not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.
