Eight years ago Emma’s life is ripped apart when Charlie saves her life from a devastating tornado and walks away. Left with nothing, she moves from Glen Springs, Oklahoma to New York. She finds success, but the only thing that feels like home is M’s Place, the diner near her apartment.

A trip to Las Vegas changes everything. Things are looking up then tragedy strikes. Emma moves back to Oklahoma with more on her plate than she ever imagined. Can she finally get her life together and put the history between her and Charlie to rest?

excerpt

An hour gave her just enough time to shower and style her glossy brown hair in a simple tight knot at the top of her head. A few stray curls were left hanging to break up the harshness. She had also treated herself to a new underwear set, to fit better under the stunning dress she was now trying to fasten. After attempting for a few minutes, Emma walked out in to the shared area holding the dress to her chest to ask Bruce if he could assist. She wasn’t prepared for him to be standing there looking absolutely flawless in a double breasted black tuxedo, his handsome features accentuated by clean shaven skin and his normally fairly wayward hair styled to perfection. He was the epitome of handsome and it did funny things to her stomach as she took him in.

“Erm… Bruce… could you help?” she asked shyly, turning around and exposing her naked back to him under the unfastened dress. Stepping over gracefully, Bruce gently took the zipper and helped her close the dress. His fingers gently slid up her back, leaving a tingling trail right the way to the top of the zipper. Emma’s breath hitched at the contact and she felt another blush creeping over her made-up face. “Thank you,” she whispered and walked away, too scared what she may see in his face if she turned back, or more importantly what he may have seen in hers.

Grabbing her clutch and putting on the matching pumps, she took a final stock of herself in the mirror and when she was satisfied at what she saw she walked back out. Bruce was standing in front of the floor to ceiling window, taking in the early evening bustle of the strip and sipping from a glass of dark liquid. She slowly walked to him with the clicking of her heels on the floor tiles the only noise in the room.

“I’m ready when you are.” She spoke softly. He turned and a slow smile of appreciation spread across his face.

“I was right. You are going to be the most beautiful woman in the room tonight.” He set his tumbler down on the table and reached for a small black velvet box. He walked over to Emma and opening it he took out a simple silver chain, attached to which was the most exquisite diamond pendant. Leaning in to clasp it around her neck, Emma could smell the delicate cologne he was wearing mixed with the fresh scent of his shower soap.

“Bruce, this is too much,” she protested.

“Shh. Just take a look in the mirror, and if you don’t think it completes this outfit, I’ll take it back,” he proposed.

She wandered to the mirror in the foyer of the suite and agreed he was right. It was just the right size to fill the expanse of glowing skin between her neck and the low cut seam at the top of her dress. She felt beautiful.

excerpt

Without a thought, he jumped from his truck and ran inside the house screaming for Emma. The telephone was ringing off the hook and he wondered where she had gone. He could see out of the kitchen window that they had seconds to react. The dark clouds were now a swirling mass of yellow, grey and white and he could see that as the storm was approaching the clouds were rotating majestically, mixing together in the turbulent air. Then he saw it, the tell-tale funnel of a tornado that was trying to touch ground. He had seen a few tornados in his time, not surprising as he was raised in the most tornado-prone areas of America. But this was a monster storm and in the few seconds he had taken to check what was happening he counted at least four separate funnel clouds that kept trying to touch ground and that meant one thing; complete disaster. The old, timber-framed house would be destroyed along with him and Emma if he didn’t hurry. He had to act fast. The weather was worsening by the second and with the intense hail that was now falling, they risked injury just trying to attempt to escape.

Charlie raced into the corridor, down the center of the house and straight into Emma’s room where he found her listening to the iPod, oblivious to the scene unfolding around them. Charlie and Emma were caught right in the middle of Mother Nature unleashing weather on a scale neither of them had ever witnessed before. Wasting no time, Charlie grabbed the stunned young woman and as he ran from the house with her in his arms the earphones fell from her ears and he shouted, “Where is the nearest tornado shelter, Em? We need to get there now!”

The terror was clear on his face and he felt her stiffen as she clung on to him so tightly that her knuckles went white from the strain. He felt safer with her in his arms, despite the absolute carnage that was unfolding just a few hundred yards away from them now. He was trying his best to shelter her too from the huge hailstones that were hitting them both relentlessly. He could feel them ripping into the fabric of his jacket. He ran as fast as he could, holding her as if their lives depended on it. She must have realized she was hindering him and wriggled out of his grasp and grabbed his hand as she ran along side him.

“Over there.” He heard above the roar of the wind and thunder as she pointed to the old Fitzgerald place just opposite her parents’ house. It was a large log cabin style home, which had in the past housed a substantial and well-stocked tornado shelter in the grounds. She had often told him that the place always made her grimace. He agreed though, that its odd looking, two-toned wood construction made it one of the least attractive buildings in the area. Thankfully, it was buried within a large forested plot and was barely visible from anywhere until the winter cleared the leaves from the surrounding trees. It wasn’t too long ago that sweet, old Mrs. Fitzgerald had moved into a home near the big city and the place was now empty. He hoped that the shelter was still there and open. He later found out that Mrs. Fitzgerald had always made sure that Emma’s parents knew to use the shelter with them being her nearest neighbors. Emma wriggled from Charlie’s arms and they ran for their lives toward the side of the property. The storm was almost on top of them. He cautioned a glance back toward the house and saw that the funnel had touched ground and expanded in the time that they had run across the road and to the shelter. The thunder rumbled on, each clap merging into the next as the noise of the hail on the tree branches and the asphalt of the road made it almost impossible to hear anything else.

Ripping at the overgrown foliage surrounding the doorway, he managed to ease the door open just as the full force of the tornado hit the neighborhood. Huge pieces of unidentifiable debris, along with pieces of farmyard machinery, large chunks of clapboard, and roofing that had been ripped from the recently destroyed houses were swirling around just meters in front of them. The noise was thunderous. The pressure changes were causing havoc with their ears and there was no way they could communicate effectively.

Charlie turned to grab his sweetheart to pull her into the safety of the shelter and he found she had vanished. His heart failed when he realized that she could be anywhere by now if she had been caught in an updraft because the power of this storm was terrific. He stood from his position near the entrance and glanced around in every direction. Even though it was pointless he started frantically shouting,

“Emma, Emma where are you? Emma!”

Book Blurb

Eight years ago a tornado devastated the community of Glen Springs. That same night my heart was torn to shreds when he left. Now, all I have to live for is work. I’m successful and have a good life, just like he wished. So, why am I so unhappy?

A tragedy is bringing me home and I’m now finding my well ordered and successful life hurled into a whirlwind of uncertainty. The biggest threat of all comes in the shape of Charlie Haart, the number one reason I have stayed away from Glen Springs for so long.

excerpt

Emma had begun to finally relax. She leaned her pale face up towards him and slowly began to kiss him, much to his surprise. He could feel the gratitude and emotion flooding through her kiss to his lips. She began to deepen the kiss and slowly moved her cool and clammy hands up and under his shirt, gently tracing up his defined stomach ending at his muscled chest. It felt amazing.

Groaning heavily, he pulled himself away with everything he had, “Em, please don’t start anything you don’t want to finish, sweetheart. I want you so much. I want to do this more that you’ll ever know, and it’s killing me, but I’m not doing this here, not tonight. Not our first time together. I wanted it to be perfect for you and this isn’t. This… this is just not the time and place, sweethe…” and before he finished she was on him, straddling across his thighs kissing him more fervently than ever before. He could feel her heat through their layers of clothing, heating a spot on his thighs through the warmth she was emitting. She was obviously turned on by the passionate kiss. His pants started to pull tight over his now uncomfortable groin. He almost came undone when she began delving her tongue deep into his mouth, giving him full access to hers. He greedily took everything she had to give with his mouth and offering her as much in return.

She pulled away, breathing heavily as she looked right into his eyes. He felt everything else melt away as he knew she saw right into his soul. His heart skipped several beats as he returned her gaze. Heat radiated from between her legs and felt like it was searing his thighs through the layers of cotton between her and his bare skin. The immense effort it took to restrain himself caused him incredible discomfort as his nails dug hard into his fisted palms and the skin of his knuckles stretched taut over his bones. Pleading and gazing at him with such passion and need in her eyes, she whispered, “I totally disagree, Blaze. You have just saved my life, and I want this now more that I have ever wanted anything else.”

He stood from his position near the entrance and glanced around in every direction. Even though it was pointless he started frantically shouting,

“Emma, Emma where are you? Emma!”

His voice drowned out by the relentless force in play around him. Seconds later he ran in the general direction of a muffled scream. The intensity of the wind had obviously dragged her several meters from the shelter. Because of the increasing force of the storm and she was clinging for dear life to a tree. Grabbing her with both hands and holding on with all his might, he managed to free her grip from the tree trunk and dragged her down the stairs into the cellar. He safeguarded her on the floor near the shadow of what looked like a small bed and then went back up and tightly secured the shelter door. He took a moment to silently thank old Mrs. Fitzgerald for her emergency planning.

As the relief hit him and the adrenaline coursed through his veins he fell against the dirt wall of the entrance tunnel with his back and his legs gave way. Letting out a long sigh, he realized he could hear the sounds of gentle sobbing coming from deeper in the shelter. The noise outside was phenomenal although he hoped that the storm would relent soon. He crawled slowly on his hands and knees towards his beautiful girlfriend, the love of his life, and took her into his arms and held on like it was all he could do to survive.

As Emma melted into him, he felt complete and he lost count of how many minutes they sat there in the darkness just listening to the sounds of the storm raging above them. The only other sounds were of their ragged breaths and thundering heartbeats. That had been too close.

Just as he stopped in his usual spot under the carport of the house the tornado-warning siren sounded and as it did all hell broke loose. The wind whipped up and out of the corner of his eye he saw a huge tornado heading across the fields behind the house and straight at where he was standing. Without a thought he jumped from his truck and ran inside the house screaming for Emma. The telephone was ringing off the hook and he wondered just where Emma had gone. He could see out of the kitchen window that they had seconds to react and he knew this old timber framed house would be destroyed along with half of the sparsely populated neighborhood.

Charlie ran into the corridor, running down the center of the house and straight into Emma’s room where he found her listening to the iPod, oblivious to the scene unfolding around them. Mother Nature was unleashing what would turn out to be her worst evening of destruction on record and Charlie and Emma were caught right in the middle of it. Wasting no time, Charlie grabbed Emma and as he ran from the house with her in his arms he ripped the earphones from her ears and shouted, “Where is the nearest Tornado Shelter, Em? After what felt like hours, Charlie could still hear the siren still blaring above them. This was one bad storm cell and it sounded like they were far from being out of the woods yet. Fumbling about the dark shelter, he could just see the outlines of a couple of boxes and a cupboard in the far corner of the small underground room. As the lightening flashes continued to light the room sporadically he was able to release a shaking Emma and attempt to find some light.

“Sweetheart, I just need to reach over there and see if there is any candles or a torch, ok? I will be right back and won’t leave you, I promise.”

He saw her nod her head in acknowledgement and fumbled across and found a box of candles and some storm matches in one of the boxes. When he has finally lit a few candles, the room looked a little less scary and was pretty well stocked. It seemed as though the old lady had kept this place provisioned with a few bits right up until she moved. Charlie saw Emma cowered in the same spot, in mild shock no doubt and he scooted towards her taking her once again into his arms.

She was quiet, almost too quiet and as he scanned around the room he saw that there was a huge, yet, comfy looking sofa covered in some beautiful handmade quilts and gently lifted her across the room and gently laid her on the sofa, covering her with a couple of the patchwork quilts. As he went to seek out the other boxes in the shelter, Emma reached out and grabbed his arm.

“Thank you.”

The tiny quivering voice echoed round the room.

“Thank you, Spark. You literally just saved my life. Twice.”

Then she burst into a heart-wrenching sobbing fit. Charlie gently climbed on to the sofa with her and took her gorgeous, tear-stained face tenderly into his hands and wiped away the tears with his thumbs. Kissing her forehead gently he replied,

“My absolute pleasure sweetheart. Knowing there could be a world without you in it would completely break me do you know that? I would die before I’d let anything happen to you Emma. I really would.”
