The door flung open and a man stepped into her room. Who was he? The vaguely familiar scent of sandalwood and pine filled her senses. Her heartbeat spiked, but she held her ground and set her chin, determined not to show him an ounce of fear.

There was no denying his masculinity. He was tall and his massive shoulders filled out the cloak he wore. Shadows enveloped most of his features, but she could make out his penetrating amber-hazel eyes through the darkness. A soft gasp escaped her.

He raised his hand and lowered his hood. An inherent strength filled his profile. Confidence. Concern. Relief.

Rosa’s breath jammed in her throat. He looked familiar. He smelled familiar.

“Rosa, it’s Michael. Let’s go.”

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”

A frown set against his rugged features. “I don’t have time to argue — now put on a warm

dress and cloak.”

“No.” She was not going anywhere with him despite the relief in his voice.

He sighed and shut the door. Moving with fluid grace, he crossed the room, jerked the

door to her closet open and threw the items he wanted her to wear on her bed. “Get. Dressed.”

“No.” She was determined not to budge, despite the danger outside.

“Rosa, we’re leaving.”

“I’m staying.”

“Why would you want to stay? Clement kidnapped you.”

Disconcerted, she pointedly glanced away from his hard stare. What did he mean by kidnapped? Clement didn’t keep her behind bars and feed her only bread and water. Rosa could even go into Brasov to shop as long as Lucien or one of the bodyguards went with her.

“I’m going to take you back to your mother.”

Excerpt

Tired and thirsty, she finally made it to the courtyard. Edmund was nowhere to be found. She should have expected it, really. No doubt he was in the palace filling their great-grandfather’s head with forward-thinking ideas. She crossed her arms, staring at the steps. Several carriages waited nearby. No one in their right mind would let her into the palace looking like she did — like she had just stepped out of the gutter.

“Excuse me, who are you?”

Alice spun around to find herself face-to-face with two gentlemen who stood near one of the waiting carriages. One gentleman was older, Alice guessed in his fifties, one younger. The older gentleman stared at her like she truly was a guttersnipe, but the younger one — he was tall, with chiseled cheeks and sensitive hazel eyes. His broad chest filled his suit well and he measured her with a cool, appraising look that hinted at… appreciation. An uncomfortable feeling washed over her. Never had a man’s stare made her feel so… warm.

“Well?” asked the older gentleman.

Alice straightened her posture with her usual royal dignity and took off her glasses as she always did when she introduced herself. “I am Her Royal Highness, Princess Alice of York.”

The men looked at each other, at her, then back at themselves. She wasn’t sure if they were befuddled, confused, or wanted to laugh. Finally, the older gentleman spoke. “Princess Alice is seven years old.”

Alice bit the inside of her lip, realizing she had totally forgotten where she was due to the younger gentleman’s attention. She slid her glasses back on. “Simply call me Alice — Alice Windsor.”

“And you may call me Prime Minister.”

His gaze was as soft as a caress. He reached out and tucked a stray tendril of hair behind her ear. Then slowly, he curved his hand around the nape of her neck and moved closer so there was no space between them.

Their lips skirted each other’s, teasing, tempting… until Dimitri’s mouth finally captured hers in a drugging kiss.

His lips were firm and persuasive. He smelled of soap and sandalwood. Something intense flared within her, and she fisted her hands around the lapels of his coat. Her body betrayed her desire. His erection pressed against her thigh.

All of a sudden, an all-crushing fear consumed her. He was hard for her. It was too soon, too fast. She broke the kiss and pushed him away.

“Elise–” Dimitri began.

“Umph!”

Elise’s heart jumped. She swung around and looked at the door.

It stood ajar.

“Lucy!” Elise forgot all about Dimitri’s kiss and rushed inside with him right behind her. Concern spiked within her the second she saw Lucy.

Her friend’s hands and feet were tied to a chair, and a gag was in her mouth. The room had been trashed. Their suitcases had been turned over; their clothes and books tossed haphazardly about.

Fear knotted inside Elise. She rushed to the chair and took off Lucy’s gag. Dimitri untied the knots at Lucy’s feet, concern for her friend evident in his eyes. Elise was thrilled that Dimitri had helped her with no hesitation or reservations

“What happened?” Elise asked. “Who did this?”

“They were looking for the egg,” Lucy said. She glanced at Dimitri, but instead of her earlier resistance to him, gratefulness filled her gaze.

Dimitri froze and glanced up, his stare drilling into Elise. “Egg? A Faberge egg?”

Elise loosened one of the ropes around Lucy’s hand and looked at Dimitri, perplexed. “What do you know about Faberge eggs?”

He muttered something in Russian, finished untying the knot around Lucy’s other ankle, and stood, straightening his shoulders.

“That’s what I lost. What I’ve been looking for — my Faberge egg.”

Then over Thanksgiving break, the girls encounter a young man named Donnie who claims to be running from a demon – a demon sent by the Devil himself. They might have dismissed the man as deluded, but Anise recognizes him from her dreams. He is the perfect lover she’s been dreaming of night after night.

Under the Harvest Moon by Markee Anderson

Apple of His Eye by Nan O’Berry

Callie Dalton’s truck runs out of gas on the road to her family’s fruit stand. When a forestry agent Marshall Albright comes to her rescue, little does she know that he is the grandson of her grandfather’s worst enemy, Brice Huntington. It seems the Dalton’s and Huntington’s have been waging a feud for the past twenty-nine years, ever since Laura Huntington left Stephen Dalton at the altar.

Falling in love was the easy part; the hard part is going to be keeping their grandparents from confronting one another. Can their love bring these two warring factions together?

from “Under the Harvest Moon:”

Cindy grabbed her drink and sipped it. As she turned toward Kirby, she put her hand on his arm. “Call me. We’ll do lunch.”

Never. He had a plan for his life and it didn’t involve Cindy Ambrose.

But he couldn’t stop from nodding as she walked away.

Kirby stepped up to the counter. “I’ll have a hot chocolate with extra whipped cream, please.”

“For you?” the girl asked.

“No.” He nodded toward Victoria. “For my date.” The comment seemed so foreign to him, but he had to smile. Victoria didn’t even know she was on a date.

“Ah. You’re trying to impress her,” the clerk said. “I’ll help you out.” She leaned closer. “You need it, I can tell.” She reached up and straightened his polo shirt’s collar. “You need to look the part.”

Considering the girl was his neighbor, he had to chuckle. “Thanks, Belinda. Do I look okay?”

“Yep. Smokin’ hot, actually.”
