Dear Mr. Dickens,

Scrooge is mean, Marley is a ghost. This isn’t the best setup for a Christmas story. Were you writing this for Halloween or something? Also, why do you call your chapters staves? Whatever. I’m just glad they’re short.

Missing the mistletoe,

Eleanor

The Tree Keeper’s Promise captures the warmth and wonder of the holiday season.
Q & A with the Author
Describe yourself in 50 words or less
I can write a novel, but ask me to describe myself, and I get writer’s block. I’ve lived as many years in the southwest as I have in the northeast. Both places are dear to me. Also, I love to be creative for the joy it brings.
What do you love most in the world?
My family.
What do you fear most?
Scorpions.
What is your largest unfulfilled dream, and what are you doing to reach it?
Finishing my degree. What am I doing to reach it? Deciding my major.
What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Motherhood (and still doing it).
Now that we’ve gotten to know each other, tell me a story. It can be long or short. From your childhood or last week. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it’s yours. What’s your story?
Once upon a time there was a little girl who wanted to write books so she could share stories with her friends. But every time she would visit the library, or read a great book, she would get the idea that she wasn’t smart enough to write her own. Until she was grown and became a mom and was taking care of her daughter who had been sick for several days—during a sleepless night, she had an idea—miracle Christmas trees. She was so excited about the story, she didn’t stop to doubt herself. And The Christmas Tree Keeper was born!

Though Angela Donovan is out of work and needs money for rent, she yearns for her eight-year-old daughter to have a carefree holiday.
The last thing she wants is the pressure of her daughter expecting a miracle.
But when they pick out a Christmas tree at a cozy Massachusetts tree farm that’s exactly what happens when they learn the trees might be miracle trees.
Mark Shafer is soon to be the new keeper of the Christmas trees when he inherits the family farm. He’d like to run it with a family of his own, but his girlfriend wants nothing to do with farm life. He makes plans to sell so he can propose to his girlfriend and pursue a career in music. Then he meets an unforgettable customer and her daughter, and an  anonymous gift compels them to learn the truth about the trees.

With a buyer willing to pay top dollar for the land, Mark has the fate of the trees in his hand. Will he be able to see what and who is most important? And will Angela give the miracle of love a chance?”
Top Ten List:
  1. Born in Stoughton–Massachusetts, pronounced Stow-ten, basically not like it looks.
  2. Grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts, home of Rocky Marciano, the boxer. Other than our hometown, he and I don’t have anything else in common. I’m a writer, not a fighter.
  3. I took sailing lessons on the Charles River one summer.
  4. I loved riding my bike, exploring streams, and playing at the park near my house.
  5. I learned to bake bread when I was 36 and found out I’m pretty good at it.
  6. I worked as janitor in college, my hours were 3 to 6 in the morning. I learned how much goes on in the world while most people are sleeping. And the importance of warm socks.
  7. In 2013, I was named Arizona Young Mother of the Year. I attended a convention in NYC and had to give a speech. I was very humbled and also terrified, I burned my forehead with my curling iron and have the scar to help me remember the lovely honor.
  8. I cross-stitch. I think it’s a lost art.
  9. I won a poetry contest in high-school, which may have given me too much encouragement.
  10. I love life even when it is hard.

Top Ten List:

· Won some poetry contests in high school, probably gave me way too much encouragement.
· Favorite odd job: worked security at an art museum.
· I can spell gobbledygook.
· I miss fall foliage, cool misty rain, and the need for a warm sweater. But I don’t miss shoveling snow.

· Love Jane Eyre.
· Favorite word: optimism.
· To get through revisions, I bake a lot of chocolate chip cookies.

Q and A with the Author

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I learned so much from writing this book that could I could fill another book, but that just might be because I had a lot to learn. What stands out are these:

1. The words won’t write themselves, I need to show up at the page.

2. Writing a book is like entering an agreement with the reader. That is agreement is set up within the first five pages (or less) and as the author, I need to deliver on the promise of the premise or risk not living up to my part of the agreement.

3. Writing is harder than I want it to be, but also more rewarding than I dreamed it could be.

What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

Besides finding time to write, self-doubt would top the list of what I struggled with most. How did I defeat it? I’m not sure I did, but I did learn to set it aside long enough to finish the book and then long enough to share the book with readers. If I allow my self-doubt too much “air time” it can shut down the entire creative process. I’ll only entertain so much, then I get back to the page.

“Can we bring something for Christmas?”

“Like what?”

“Can I bring your nativity set?” she asked as she looked at it longingly.

Angela set the grocery bags down in front of the door. She picked up the case and began putting the pieces into their corresponding velvet compartments. Caroline helped. The place for the lamb remained empty.

“I’m sorry I lost the lamb,” Caroline said.

“It’s okay,” Angela insisted. “Don’t worry about it.”

“Will we ever find it?”

“Maybe,” she said. Probably not.

“What did Florinda tell you about the wise men?” Caroline asked.

Angela sighed. Her daughter’s energy seemed to increase as Angela’s waned.

“The wise men? ‘Don’t give up your search for Jesus,’ I think she said.”

“What does that mean?”

“The wise men traveled a great distance. It must have been a long journey, but they didn’t stop until they found Jesus as a child.” Angela almost closed the case, but Caroline reached for another piece.

“What about him? What did she say about Joseph?”

Too worn out to resist her daughter’s earnest inquiry, Angela explained, “Florinda said, ‘when you find someone as loving and as loyal as Joseph, keep him close to your heart.’”

Caroline reached for the figure and tilted her head. “You haven’t found someone like that yet, have you?” she asked.

Angela took the figure back, put it in the case and closed it. She spoke the obvious answer hanging in the air.

“No. I haven’t.”

From Chapter Two:

“How about you come to a late dinner with us?” Mark asked tentatively.

“Of course not,” he said. “Leave me be. The land is quiet tonight. The wind is blowing in from the north. The trees know there’s a change coming.”

“Papa.”

“The trees know it, Mark. I don’t yet. But there’s something.”

Mark kept his eyes from rolling. The trees this and the land that. He couldn’t reason with Papa anymore. When he talked about the trees that way, Mark wished his parents were still alive. Maybe they’d understand him better, or maybe his dad would be able to explain the trees to him in a way that was at least rational. But that wasn’t possible.
