Where is Your (Least) Favorite Place to Write

If you ask a million writers where their favorite place to write is, I bet at least 900,000 will say “at home, while wearing pajamas.” I am one of those 900,000. (Seriously: Home. Pajamas. It’s great.) So, I don’t have any new insights there. But! I can tell you about my LEAST favorite places to write. All of these are actual genuine true attempts that I really tried. Really.

  1. In the passenger seat of a car, with a baby and a young child in the back seat, when both of them are cranky. The young child was mine. The baby was my brother’s. He was driving. I was writing a synopsis. You can probably guess my level of success.
  2. In a coffee shop, when there’s one other person there and he’s loudly practicing a language tape. It’s great to learn a new language. It’s less great to do so in a public setting without earbuds in. Incredibly, I did manage a thousand words in my manuscript, though I think my characters were grumpy and puzzled in that scene.
  3. At home, while wearing pajamas, when my husband is home sick. I realize this makes me a terrible person. Mr. R is really healthy and hardly ever takes a sick day, which might be why when he DOES get sick, he is really loud and tragic.*

I’m sorry. I told you I was a terrible person.

  1. At the home of one of my out-of-state relatives, when everyone else is eating snacks and playing cards. Both snacks and cards are Serious Business for my relatives, but in a fun way. If you’re playing cards, you need to have pie or cookies or, at the very least, a cheese plate with a bowl of candy on the side. Knowing this is going on when I’m shut away trying to work on a story…well, I feel like I’m missing out on life.

I guess it’s all about balance, fitting a fictional world into a real one. I don’t always do that very well, as this list proves! But when the book is done, all the places to write—favorite and unfavorite, difficult and pleasant—are totally worth it for the chance to get a new story into readers’ hands. I hope you’ll enjoy reading A Gentleman’s Game!

*He just read this and said, “I am not.” Dutifully reported.

How far will a man go

Talented but troubled, the Chandler family seems cursed by bad luck—and so Nathaniel Chandler has learned to trade on his charm. He can broker a deal with anyone from a turf-mad English noble to an Irish horse breeder. But Nathaniel’s skills are tested when his stable of trained Thoroughbreds become suspiciously ill just before the Epsom Derby, and he begins to suspect his father’s new secretary is not as innocent as she seems.

To win a woman’s secretive heart?

Nathaniel would be very surprised if he knew why Rosalind Agate was really helping his family in their quest for a Derby victory. But for the sake of both their livelihoods, Rosalind and Nathaniel must set aside their suspicions. As Derby Day draws near, her wit and his charm make for a successful investigative team…and light the fires of growing desire. But Rosalind’s life is built on secrets and Nathaniel’s on charisma, and neither defense will serve them once they lose their hearts…

Mia Marlowe learned much of what she knows about storytelling from singing. A classically trained soprano, she devised back stories to prepare for operatic roles. Since she’s worn a real corset, and had to sing high C’s in one, she empathizes with the trials of her fictional heroines. But in Mia’s stories, they don’t die in a Parisian garret. They get to live and keep the hero! Mia loves history, art, music and travel. Especially travel. Good thing, since she’s lived in 9 different states and is embarrassed to admit she’s lost track of how many times she’s been to Europe. She regards her frequent moves as vacations on which she drags along all her stuff. Currently, she and her DH make their home in New England.
